Ostentum (Magic Knight Errant Quest)

[X] UbeOne

Well, this is not getting any more suspicious by the minute, no sir!

Suspicion
[x] The situation seems... familiar to you. What do you know about what happened to him?

"I'll be straightforward," You address Idunna more seriously, "You seem familiar with our predicament. What do you know about what happened to him?"

She stands entirely still, quietly looking at you for a short while. After a little staring contest, she opens in a serious tone, "There's nothing I can tell you about that."

"What does that mean?" Your tone grows slightly accusatory, "Do you know something?" If this woman knows something about what happened to the prince, she had better tell you...

"It means exactly what I said. Are you deaf?" Her brow furrows in a slight glare.

This woman is becoming more irritating by the second. You have half a mind to-

"Miss Writham?" You turn to see prince Ancillas approaching. "Is everything alright?"

"Ah- just fine. I'm sorry to have worried you." You assure him, everything is a-okay. "I was just having a talk with this person."

"Uh..." He looks to Idunna, "And she is?"

"Idunna," She says with a miniscule bow. "Pleasure."

"A-ah...I'm Ancillas, then. It's nice to meet you," He quickly turns back to you, uncertain, "Is this who you said might be able to help?"

"Well, yes, but..." You trail off. So far you've gotten the sense that even if this woman knows something, she won't answer you.

"Is it true? Do you maybe know what happened?" Ancillas looks up at Idunna pleadingly.

"I'm sorry, but I have nothing I can tell you," She continues with a regretful tone, "There's only one thing..."

"One thing?" He stares earnestly at her.

"If you travel to the northwest, to the nearby city of Charnet, you'll most definitely learn more there." She finishes in a completely serious tone.

What on earth is that supposed to mean, you wonder? You find that an incredibly suspect thing to say, right after claiming she had nothing she could tell you about what happened to prince Ancillas!

"Is...is that all?" He asks tensely.

"I am...fairly certain." Idunna responds nervously.

The both of them fall silent. You keep your stare directed at Idunna. Just as you're about to start again-

"I see. Then...thank you." Ancillas nods graciously.

"You're very welcome." Idunna takes another shallow bow. "I am sorry, but I should get going."

She turns to leave, and Ancillas awkwardly says his goodbye.

[] Stop her again. You aren't done yet, she's far too suspicious.

[] Just let her go, there's no reason to keep bothering with her.

If we're gonna stop her, we better have questions ready.

[X] Just let her go, there's no reason to keep bothering with her.

At this point, stopping her again becomes quite rude. So yeah, she pretty much told us nothing, but it's clear she won't say anything more.

Don't forget, we have a starving prince on our hands. 'Sides, we have a lead at least, and we will surely bump into her again.

Let it go

Bah. There's no use bothering with this woman, any longer. You take a moment to watch as she leisurely walks away before you move to return to the crummy tavern. You motion for Ancillas to come with you, and he does.

"Sorry about that, my- uh, Ancillas. It ended up being a waste of time."

"Well, not entirely...I'm grateful for your efforts."

You re-enter the small building.

You both return to the table you sat at originally. In front of Ancillas' seat is one empty plate, and another plate with a modestly sized and totally untouched cut of meat. He sits for a moment, staring at his water, before addressing you again.

"I'm sorry, I, uh, completely forgot to mention beforehand," he says nervously, averting his gaze, "But I don't eat meat."

You feel your heart skip a beat. You immediately berate yourself; you fool! How could you have not thought to ask the prince, first? And to present a hungry prince with food he cannot eat, you may as well be mocking him!

"My...my sincerest apologies, prince Ancillas!" You fall back into loyal knight mode, devastated you could have made such a simple mistake. "I can find something else right away..." You jump to your feet, when he quickly stops you.

"Please don't worry about it," He gestures for you to remain calm, "I think, for now, I've had enough. More importantly, I don't think the food should go to waste. Aren't you hungry at all?" He holds the plate toward you.

Such...a kind soul. Your knightly spirit weeps in gratitude for this generous, forgiving, noble boy. You sit down, gently take the plate and set it before yourself.

"Thank you...very much, prince Ancillas."

"Just Ancillas." He smiles warmly.

"Right." You nod. You look down at the dish.

...You still feel it would be rude to just start eating in front of the prince. You'll wait. At the moment, there's something more important to discuss.

"Well, anyways. Ancillas," You start firmly, "I think we should really decide on what exactly to do, next."

"Ah...well that sounds reasonable." He nods slowly.

"So, clearly, we must start heading north to see you back to the capital as soon as possible." You muse out loud, before more directly asking him, "If we depart this town today I'm sure we could reach the next town some time early morrow. But would you rather try to rest overnight in this town?"

"U...uhm..." He pauses, maybe a bit overwhelmed by the decision.

Ancillas takes a slow breath, then tries again.

"I was...thinking, actually," He starts uncertainly, but finishing with more conviction, "About what that woman said. Idunna, was her name?"

Your brow furrows once again.

"That woman..." You murmur.

"How far is the city she mentioned...? Is it too much out of the way to travel there?"

You contemplate silently. To travel directly north to the nearest town of Klause would take about a full day's trip on horse, thanks to the relative closeness of the southern towns near the border.

On the other hand, the city that woman mentioned, Charnet, toward the northwest. It's more west than north; it's even farther from Klause than it is from this town. You'd wager it would take two days and maybe a half to get there. Unless you were to stay awake the entire trip, you'd be spending a night outside, something you wouldn't dream of making a prince do.

On top of that, you can't say you're too ready to trust what that woman was saying. She's just too suspect.

"Two days and maybe a half," You repeat your thoughts to the prince, "It's not a difficult trip, but not one I would make a prince undertake."

"What..." His expression drops, "You don't think I could do it...?"

"I...that's..." You fluster a bit, worried at having offended him, "I just don't think a prince should...ahem. You know what I mean, yes?"

He just stares at his drink thoughtfully.

"So...what should we do?" He implores you.

Seems you've got travel planning to do...

[] Straight north, the town of Klause.

Hmm, I'm conflicted. On one hand, story convention tells me that we definitely should check this lead. On the other, from an IC point of view, it suspiciously looks like a trap (in fact, so much that we might wonder that the fact that this is so obvious might mean it's actually not a trap, unless they were counting on such reasoning and it is indeed a trap... ect.)

You know, in the end, I think it's not our decision to make.

[X] "We'll do what you think is best. I'll protect you to the best of my abilities no matter what."
-[X] Leave tomorrow

Some rest time might do the prince some good.

People have no doubt heard about us calling Ancillas a Prince. Even if they hadn't, people are gonna gossip about the obviously noble lady boy and one of the more unsavory types are gonna gather their buddies and chase after a lone knight-errant and her charge.

Let's not leave ourselves open to attack at night.

We head to Klause, check our lead, then to Charnet.

EDIT:
