Original Evangelion is coming to Netflix in 2019

I happen to have Netflix, and I've never watched Evangelion. I've seen memes though :V

So... let's dive in.
Watch a fansub instead. It's only about 55 GB and you can binge it in three nights, two if you rush. (I did it in two a little over a year ago.) Rebuild is another 33 GB and takes only one night.

Ofc I was also thoroughly spoiled by Asukaquest and 15 years of internet nerd culture, but there was a lot of content that the memes overlooked.

Sorry if I missed a more appropriate thread, but I finished binging the show last night (and I'll catch the movies tomorrow) and I happen to like the new dub more than the old one. Though I do miss "Fly Me To The Moon".

It got deleted apparently; can you summarize?
essentially
- His translation changed all mentions of Terrorists to specify left wing terrorists
- He wrote an article to oppose an expansion of Japan's child pornography laws
- He drew a hentai doujin starring Nazi lolis

The implication made by the tweeters was that his removal of the "I love you" line was him imposing his own beliefs onto the work rather than him accurately reflecting it

Considering the state of the world in NGE, I can totally see collectivists being the ines to resort to violence.

Well, I hate Hideaki Anno because his name leaves me confused. Is it Anno Domini or Anno Mundi? The world wonders.

... OK, so is it just me or is calling Hideaki Anno "right-wing" not quite right, given that his politics seem to clearly be much more complicated than that.

He's not, at the very least, supporting outright Neo-Nazi hate groups or a flat out fascist like the right wing on literally 90% of the planet. In India, the BJP is supported by an actual neo-nazi hate group that wants "low-caste" and Muslim people either kicked out of the country or killed (never mind how th caste system is supposed to be flat out illegal for very good reason). In the Philipines, Duerte outright murders drug addicts on the street and murdered his own peers for bullying him, while outright endorsing a woman's rape in a "joke". In the US, Trump is literally creating concentration camps for migrant children and adults, as well as potentially causing the end of the world.

Evangelion, if anything, seems to be a gigantic critique of right wing policies in Japan and how the horrific expectations they placed upon their children and the economy they drove to the brink ended up damaging the nation's youth permanently and irrevocably, creating a generation cycle of trauma and pain caused by toxic masculinity, a lack of job opportunities and growing divides between generations of youth, among many other things. One of the central themes of it, after all, is that adults are often untrustworthy, often either barely more mature or outright less mature than the children they're supposed to take care of, and the story is set after a near complete apocalypse destroyed massive chunks of the world and put the rest of it on life support.

Also, y'know, Hideaki Anno is friends with, or at least friendly acquaintances with, Kunihiko Ikuhara, isn't exactly the most right wing person on the planet. He's the opposite, you could say.

Then again, he does call Japan a "nation of children" for... reading porn in public and appreciating escapist fiction. Also, he's pretty close to Hayao Miyazaki, whose politics are kinda schizo at the absolute best of times, and his favorite movie, the Invasion of Okinawa, does have some kinda right-wingish elements if I'm not completely mistaken.

So they're complicated. Still, as a general rule, right wing creators are kinda shit.

"It's complicated and ambiguous and unclear, but all right-wing creators are shit" is an interesting position.

You appear to be arguing in response to the fictional position of "Anno is a fascist" and not "Anno is pretty right-wing".

Yeah, no, those sentiments are pretty much identical. Also, I don't even know if Anno is strictly speaking "right-wing", given how his politics are more an odd mix than anything.

I don't know what to say to this. It seems like a position you've developed specifically to deprive yourself of experiencing nuance, the very nuance which you yourself lay out a couple of posts ago.
