On Quiet Shores
Life in the Steel Guard is at first a rune awakening for you. Noble you may be, but among the least, an officer you may have been proclaimed by parchment affixed with the seal of the Provincial Governor himself, but so 'wet behind the ears' you still squeak. Numanor you are informed in a thousand small ways does not truly have need of your military services and will not for decades hence. You are to guard the shores of Elenna from any who would transgress upon it.
And who might that be? you ask your commanding officer, Captain Berengor one night when he had mellowed into his cups. Why the elves, sly and treacherous they are, hording knowledge and wealth behind their walls even as they hoard the secret of eternal life upon the shores of the Aman. Who knows how many of them dwell upon the Western shore where you are banned to tread? The fleet is not permuted to sail west out of sight of your own shores.
The mood turns dark in the hall as mention of the Ban of the Valar comes forth. Men yet fear the lord of the Farthest West for they say that he is kin of Sauron the Sorcerer who holds many nations of the Men of Darkness in thrall, but mightier by far and surrounded by his kin. Some call the Valar gods and spirits, though these days that is more often derided as superstition with the learned counting them their own people elder even than the elves. It is said they lord the knowledge and understanding of their long years over the elves even as the elves do over your own people.
But among all the officers gathered to take their ease that nigh you notice one man Ulbar from Eldalondë who does not speak, but only lifts his wine cup to better hide his face. It does not take a savant to know why given he hails from a place called 'Haven of the Eldar', but if he makes his feelings anymore obvious he is bound to earn a worse moniker than 'Flower Boy' for the trouble.
