Of Gods and Monsters

Insightful little thing isn't she?
Athena or Elizabeth? Because if it's the former well... she might be the patron of heroes but she only ever gave as much help as was needed at that moment. If your looking for someone to hold your hand, Demeter sits one chair to the right of her, Aphrodite two to the left, and Hestia's tending to the bonfire in the middle of the room. Go talk to them.
And she still thinks she's the wrong person for this

It ain't all about fighting and power kid, you're smart
true, but you have to look at it this way. Right now she really doesn't have anything positive to go on so far. The only hosts she's met are

Colin: Real life Western Gunslinger.
Christina: Ex-IRA and is capable of flash freezing an entire room at the very least.
Eric: Host of Thor, enough said.
Catherine: The person everyone else considers the ace, and who has been around the block enough times that its named after her.
Elizabeth: Said ace's older sister, and the one person with more combat experience then her.

compared to them she is a little underwhelming. What she doesn't realize is that 4 out of the five started just like her and the fifth has her own set of problems.

Part 17
"Almost time for movie night." Eric Reinhart said to Catherine as he collected her plate of half eaten food.

His girlfriend sat cross-legged on the bed they shared, surrounded by a mountain range of journals detailing both her own past exploits, as well as hosts from throughout the ages. Dressed in a navy-blue T-shirt imprinted with The Beatles logo and a set of black sweatpants, she wouldn't have looked out of place in a college dorm. Rolling her eyes, she lifted her head out of one of the books, dated 1793. Even with the faint bruise over her right eye, she still remained the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on. "Go watch a movie I've seen a dozen times before and hear the same stories from Colin I've heard on almost a yearly basis? I've got more important things to do. If you want to go downstairs..."

"And leave you by yourself near an open window?" Eric said with a smirk, having fallen for his girlfriend's tricks before. "I give it 5 minutes before you jump off that balcony, open a portal, and go hunting for that archer in New York or Chicago."

"Don't worry about that." Catherine said resentfully, wincing as she struggled to her feet. Waves of pain cascade from her bruised chest with every breath, a constant reminder that her body wasn't ready to go back to fighting yet. "My sister made sure I wouldn't be out hunting tonight."

Eric's smile faded as he walked over to her, gingerly wrapping his hand around her body as he kissed the top of her head. Catherine shuddered as his hand inadvertently brushed the spot where Alexa had broken her ribs and collapsed her lung. He began to pull his hand away when she grabbed his wrist.

"Don't worry about that." She said before kissing him on the cheek. "It's just my sister's way of make sure I stay grounded."

"You know she's just worried about you Cath." Eric replied. "We all are. You've been hunting for this guy since he first showed up. You need to slow down a little Cathy, at least until we can get Alexa up to speed and figure out who this mysterious archer is."

Catherine bit her lip, not daring to tell Eric that the archer wasn't a mystery, no matter how much she wished it was. She knew all too well what his hosts were capable of, of the destruction the last one who had walked the earth had brought. It had taken her almost a decade to track him down the last time, and in the process the man had almost completed what destruction of the order World War 1 had started, and paved the roads that Apep and others had used to climb to power.

"It's ok Cathy." Eric said, holding her tightly as she felt tears well up in her eyes. "We've survived worse."

No, you haven't. She thought, all the while wishing she had been mistaken in what she had seen the night before. None of you have seen anything like this yet.

Two months later

You thought the first day was going to be the worst one for you here at the manor. That after the shock of finding out about the gods and being thrown into a life or death fight, it could only get easier. You were so wrong.

But at least part of that you can only blame on yourself. Ever since your talk with Elizabeth that first night, you've taken to heart her words about learning to control Athena before she decides to control you. The two of you have developed a sort of understanding. She'll provide her help only when you absolutely need it, and you'll do your best to make sure that never happens.

So you've busted your tail the past few months, spending most of your time between the gym and the firing range. You've also been putting more than a few hours in the library as well, with Elizabeth or Catherine finding you sound asleep in there on more than one occasion.

And it's beginning to pay off. While you're by no means ready to start reenacting the fight scenes from 300, you've proven yourself more than capable of holding your own with a spear, having started to incorporate moves from Roman Retiarius style gladiator combat at Catherine's behest. While most of the moves aren't that practical, forcing you to relinquish Aegis in order to use them, some of the sweeps and one-handed strikes designed to knock enemies off balance offer some very versatile attack options.

At the firing range, you've upgraded from pistols to rifles and SMG's. You've started using a P90 Personal Defense Weapon as your go-to. With its compact size, large magazine, and nonexistent recoil, it's the perfect for you to use in conjunction with Aegis.

Still, you know you have a long way to go until you can fight on even terms with the others. Which is why you're up at six in the morning yet again, making your way to the gym as the first rays of sunlight shine over the Adirondacks. As you enter the building, the faint sounds of metal hitting metal echo through the halls. Rushing into the gym, you see Catherine, a sword in each hand, facing down a group of eight attackers.

You almost immediately recognize the men as Shabti, life sized statues with the ability to repair themselves that Catherine and the others use as training dummies. From what you've also learned they can change their shape as well, in this case taking the forms of various gladiators, with just about every 'famous' type represented in their ranks.

As you close the door Catherine briefly looks in your direction. Her hair and clothes are pasted to her body, the slightest tremors shaking her body as the first signs of exhaustion set in. You see her smile for the briefest moment, either glad to see you here this early or for the help she hopes you're here to provide her with.

[] Jump in.
- [] Stick with Catherine.
- [] Try fighting your way to her from the opposite end.
[] Just watch.
[] Maybe you'll head over to the firing range instead.

Part 18
"Need a hand?" You ask Catherine as you race up to her, spear and shield in tow.

"Not really," Catherine replies, her golden eyes darting between the various combatants as she plans her attack. "This is routine training scenario for me. But if you want to join in, be my guest."

You look at the motley crew of replica gladiators in front of you. The two closest are lightly armored retiarii, the very fighters whose techniques Catherine incorporated into your fighting style. Though their clay faces hold no expressions, the tridents in their hands are aimed at the two of you. You venture to guess they're the warm up fight for this session, their armor and equipment meant for fighting far slower opponents. Which made them easy targets for the lightning fast host of Bastet.

Behind them stand a quartet of shabti that are much more heavily armed and armored that the first two. With big ornate helmets, large rectangular shields, and bronze guards on the remaining extremities, they looked like a Roman legionary. Your mind runs through its archives, eventually narrowing it down to murmillones or one of their offshoots. No matter who they were, they looked like tough costumers, with a frontal assault looking all but impossible.

The last two shabti took up positions behind them. Neither looks to have a single piece of armor and they both wield dual swords like Catherine's. You don't have the slightest clue who they are, but you're willing to bet they're going to be the hardest two to fight out of the entire group.

"So, you take the four on the left. I'll take the four on the right." You jokingly say.

Catherine smirks at your suggestion. "Four. Feeling a bit ambitious, are we? Why don't we focus on taking out those two retiarii in front of us first, than we can see where things go from there."

"And stay away from the two dimachaeri in the back there." She adds. "They were specifically created to fight me and will tear you apart if you get too close." Catching the bewildered look on you face she shrugs. "One of my mentors gave them to me for my birthday after overhearing me complain that the regular shabti weren't a difficult enough challenge. They won't purposely try to kill you, they're just used to far more agile and experienced opponents."

Before you can comprehend what she meant by the last part, Catherine races towards the first retiarius. From there you begin to understand just what she meant. Before the net in the statue's hand even leaves his grasp, she's already rolled under it and cut him in half at the waist. A split second later she's opened the clay torso from the right shoulder to the left waist, the three pieces falling to the ground as she turns towards her next two opponents.

You're so caught up watching her you almost get snagged by the net from the second retiarius, deactivating your shield and rolling under it just in time. As you come back up you thrust your spear, catching the statue square in the right arm and forcing him to drop the trident. Grabbing a dagger from his belt with his left hand, he comes at you again. You easily block the knife with your reactivated shield, wounding him in the stomach with your spear in return. You follow you follow up with a shot to the statue's heart, causing it to drop to its knees as you yank the spear out.

As you move past him you spy the two remaining murmillones, shields and swords raised to meet you. Next to them lay the pieces of their comrades, Catherine having made short work of them on her way to the dimachaeri. With the two-to-one situation eliminating any chance of encircling or flanking them, you decide to charge them. While the two statues are bigger than you, you have momentum on your side. While your shield charge only glances off the one, barely moving him, you knock the other over like a bowling pin. As he hits the ground you take the opportunity to finish him off, sticking the tip of your spear into the exposed underside of his jaw. The second murmillo swings widely at you, only to catch your shield as you bury your spear into his armpit. Undeterred he slams his shield into you, knocking you into the ground and leaving you slightly dazed. He follows up with a stab that grazes your arm, causing you to cry out in pain. Reacting on instinct you slam your shield into him, pushing him off you and opening him up for a follow up strike to the heart that puts him down.

Your enemies defeated, you look over at the battle between Catherine and the last two fighters. As you watch the three figures move at lightning fast speed, you realize why Catherine gave you that warning. You can barely make out the sword strikes as the three dance around each other, their movements little more than a blur. Had you been in that skirmish you would have probably died ten times over by now.

Finally, the fight dies down as one of the statues drops to the ground, a sword buried in its abdomen. Seconds later the headless body of it compatriot falls to the ground next to a kneeling Catherine, who promptly finishes off the other statue. As she walks over to you, you can see several cuts on her arms and legs.

"Nasty gash you got there." She says, motioning to your arm as if oblivious to her own wounds. "We should probably get my sister to look at that before she kills me for letting you get hurt in training."

"Then back to more training…" You reply. Having gotten use to the routine by now.

Catherine shakes her head. "My sister and I decided to give you today off given how hard you've been working, though I do appreciate seeing you here this early."

"Not like there's much to do here anyways outside of train and read books." You mumble.

"Feel free to go somewhere else for the day then. Just make sure to take one of us with you when you head out. It's not safe to out alone when you're one of us."

You're tempted to call Catherine out on that last remark as the two of you make your way to the infirmary, given her tendencies to go on "solo patrols" as she calls them, but your excitement at finally being let out of the house overrules the smart-ass part of your brain.

Part 19
"Three on one odds and only this little scratch to show for it." Elizabeth comments as she gingerly unwraps the bandage from around your arm. "I'm impressed."

"She's improved by leaps and bounds in the past month." Catherine agrees. She's sitting on a bench next to you waiting her turn to get patched up from her little training exercise, an oversized gauze pad pressed against one of the nastier cuts on her leg. You'd offered her the chance to get fixed up first, given the extent of her wounds, but she'd insisted that you go first. "If it weren't for the hunter I'd offer to start taking her out for field training."

Your skills have improved remarkably. Athena chimes in, offering you a rare compliment to you. Just imagine how much better you would be right now if you hadn't spent all those weeks ignoring me when I first picked you.

"Shut up." You growl, causing both Catherine and Elizabeth to stare at you. "Sorry, wasn't talking to you."

"Lady Athena?" Catherine asks.

You nod. "So you really think I'm ready for combat? I mean, I know I've improved a lot in the last few months… but compared to you guys I'm still so…"

Both Catherine start chuckling at your attempt to compare yourself to them, the latter almost fumbling her incantation as she mends your arm. "That's not a very healthy comparison to make." Catherine says. "We both have over a century of combat experience, including some of the bloodiest battlefields in Europe, as well as being the hosts to a pair of goddesses far more experienced in combat than Athena is."

"Care to explain…" Both you and Athena contemptuously reply.

Catherine raises her hands defensively. "I mean no offense of course. But while Athena is a formidable fighter, her hosts role first and foremost has been one of council. In antiquity, her hosts were Zeus's strategist. They worked to insure humanity survival by making plans and creating a network of human allies, heroes if you will, to help the other gods, only getting their hands dirty when the threat was severe enough to warrant it."

"Bast and Sekhmet, on the other hand, were part of a group known collectively as The Eye of Ra. In Ancient Egypt they were some of Ra's most skilled and loyal leftenants, each an army in and of themselves. These hosts were traditionally sent to battle against his most powerful enemies and complete the most dangerous missions, often alone."

"I see…" You say, contemplating just what part you're supposed to play in this new world. "Seems like a lot of pressure?"

"It can be at times," Elizabeth replies. "But we've both proven ourselves dozens of times over. So what are you planning to do with your day off?"

"Heading home." You say.

"Want one of us to go with you?" Catherine asks.

You shake your head. "I was thinking Christina actually. You two probably have enough to do around here without me forcing you to be a third wheel."

"I appreciate the gesture." Elizabeth says. "Though I don't think she's up yet. She tends to get a little sluggish this time of year."

[] Talk to Elizabeth and Catherine a little.
[] Go to the library and study.
