Of Gods and Monsters

edited the character sheet to include information for the combat system. I'll have combat modifiers for Alexa after you decide her weapon/fighting style in a few posts.

Part 10
"So, how did you two get roped into this crazy train?" You ask before digging into your breakfast.

Colin and Christina trade a smirk that seems to scream 'FNG's right.'

"I guess I'll start first then." Colin says. "Well, after helping my neighbors remind Jesse James why you don't piss off an entire town in the middle of hunting season and chasing them clear out of the state, I decided to put my new abilities to good use and become a lawman. "

"Where you paled around with Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp, and Bat Masterson..." Your interjections met by a chuckle from Colin.

"Hichkok was killed a month before Apollo took up residence in my head, and Earp was to far west of my hunting grounds." He replies. "Though I did meet Bat a few times..."

"Really?" You ask incredulously.

Colin nods. "His brother Jim took me under his wing as a sort of protege. I didn't find out until after that train wreck of a raid in Ingalls that Jim was the host of the god Nomos as well, probably explains why he was the best Lawman out of that family. After Ingalls, Jim sent me east to help The Order clean up some of the bigger cities."

"So when did you meet Catherine and Elizabeth?"

Colin brings his hand to his chin, digging through almost 200 years of memories. "Liz was back in 1914, no wait... it was 1915. Yeah, definitely 1915. She was accompanying her father on some sort of diplomatic mission, trying to keep the US out of World War One."

"But I thought the British Government..."

"If the governments of the world always shared our interests," Christina scoffs, cutting you off. "We wouldn't be needed. What Chris is saying is that while the crown wanted American men and material on their side in the war, Alastair and others wanted to keep American hosts out of a pointless conflict that had already destroyed the European aspect and cost a number of his friends their lives."

"Okay then..." You say, still not quite buying that you're now de facto part of some secret organization. "So does that mean you sat out taking down Hitler as well?"

"If you mean World War Two, than no. That's where I met Catherine actually." Colin replies. "She was a part of SOE when I was operating in Europe with the OSS."

"Working with Elsa here?" You say, smirking at the joke... at least until you realize you can now see your breath. Looking over at Christina, you see the Irish girl staring daggers at you, a growing semi circle of ice spreading across the table from her. Pushing your chair back away from the table you look back at Colin, who's just shaking his head. "Not a big fan of Frozen I take it."

"Actually,"He replies quite cautiously. "It's the fact that you just called an ex-PIRA member a British spy."

"PIRA…" You repeat, turning back to Christina. "As in-"

"Provisional… Irish… Republican… Army…" Christina finishes. "And I'd sooner freeze hell solid than lift a finger for the royal family."

"Oh." You sheepishly reply, realizing the colossal mistake you just made. "Sorry."

"I'm sure you are…" Christina replies semi-mockingly. "But no, I didn't meet Catherine during that war. I didn't get my abilities until 83'. Catherine and her brother Henry found me a few years later. In fact, my first meeting with Catherine ended with her blade at my throat after I mistook the two for a British Army officer and his girlfriend."

"And she still let you on the team?" You ask incredulously.

"It was a tense first half a decade." Christina admits, finally returning the air around you to room temperature. "But truthfully, I think Cathy was more angry over my attempt to kill her brother than anything else I did with the Provos. Besides," she adds. "Alastair and Henry were the ones who sent me here, and Cathy would never go against those two."

"You were still lucky Christina." A new voice says. "Few survive being on the wrong end of Catherine's blades."

"Shut it lover boy." Christina responds, causing you to turn around to meet this new acquaintance.

Dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, the man's not exactly hard on the eyes by any stretch of the imagination, with perfectly combed rust colored hair, shimmering brown eyes, and the physique of an action movie hero. "I see our new friend's awake." He says with a slight Scandinavian accent.

"Alexa," Christina says. "Meet Eric Reinhart, Host of Thor Odinson."

"Hi." You say a bit dreamily. You catch Christina snickering out of the corner of your eye, both Colin and Eric letting out chuckles as well.

"So where's Liz and Catherine?" Colin asks.

"Discussing Catherine's tendency to hide wounds from the rest us." Eric replies. "She came back last night in pretty rough shape. Elizabeth said they'd be down here soon."

[] So who... or what was that thing that attacked me last night?
[] So what are those two like? My dad seemed to regard them pretty highly.
[] Write-in.

... well that's a damn good way to make a life-long enemy.

Assassin, terrorist, nationalist, and punk.
We've got a real winner here.

Stupid Sexy Asgardian...

[X] So who... or what was that thing that attacked me last night?

European aspect? The various Europe hosts got swept up in the war?
Basically, between the rampant waves of nationalism spreading though the continent and the various drafts, a lot of hosts ended up in their respective countries armies.
Assassin, terrorist, nationalist, and punk.

Well if you ask her she's a freedom fighter... though she won't deny the other three. And in all honesty, what I've been able to find about UDF, they were as bad if not worse than the IRA.
Stupid Sexy Asgardian...
Yep, even made both of us forget that I changed Christina's name mid post for some reason.

Part 11
"So, who or what was that thing that attacked me last night?" You ask. The room seems to go eerily quiet as Colin, Christina, and Eric lose their smiles. They exchange glances, silently arguing about how much you should know. "What? Did someone from your side have orders to off me if I refused to go with Catherine and Elizabeth?"

"If whoever he is had been a member of our order," Colin replies, a cold iciness in his voice. "Not only would Cathy and Liz recognized him, but they'd be turning every building the order had upside down with both their father's blessing, and me right beside them."

"You're not the first host to run into this bastard." Christina adds. "The European part of our order ran into him during a mission in Cairo three months ago, and lost two hosts in the ensuing fight. They managed to hunt him down in Volgograd a few month later with the help of Colin's twin sister Bridgette and her hunters, but in the ensuing fight two more hosts and four hunters were killed. Even with most of the rest of the group were badly injured, Cathy's been the first of us to so much as lay a hand on him."

"It was still a stupid decision for her to try and fight this guy alone." Eric replies. "I'm surprised she's still standing given her injuries."

"Good luck telling her that, lover boy." Christina remarks. "She trained Paul and Dalton, and Ale was one of her old mentors. She's never going to let that bastard go after all the people he's killed."

"Would have been even better if she had finished him off last night…" Colin says, a little bitterness in his voice.

"Trust me," You hear Catherine say as she shoulders herself between Eric and Colin. "It wasn't due to lack of effort on my part."

One look at her is all you need to confirm what she said. Her tank top does little to hide the mass of bruises and cuts on left shoulder and arm, and you can see the outline of bandages that are wrapped around her chest. They seem to shake with every breath she takes. Above her right eye, you see a line of stitches that look like Catherine did the job herself.

"You ok?" Colin asks, earning a death glare from Catherine.

"I'm still standing, am I not?" She replies.

"For the time being at least…" Elizabeth replies, skirting around the little group forming at the doorway. "I see we've all met our new arrival and heard about last night."

"Yeah, Christina replies. "We have any clues on who this guy is?"

"No." Elizabeth replies. "I never got close enough for Sekhmet to identify who he was a host of."

"But Cath-"

"He was masking his deity somehow." Catherine cuts her off, her words coming out like they were preplanned. "I can only tell you he had superhuman strength. All it took was one glancing blow from that bow to separate my shoulder." You hear a grunt of annoyance from Elizabeth as she learns about a yet another of her sister's wounds from last night. "Don't look at me like that Elizabeth, I reset it after the fight."

As Elizabeth continues on about being vigilant with this new threat, you watched Catherine as she grabs a muffin on the table. As she begins to take a bite, Catherine lurches over in a violent coughing fit, swiping a napkin off the table to cover her mouth before folding it up and pocketing it.

"… Now, seeing as our new arrival has proven to be in desperate need of combat training," Elizabeth finishes, eyes fixing on you. "We should probably get to work fixing that. So what do you say Alexa, ready to follow in your mother's footsteps?"

"Well," you reply sarcastically. "It's either that or die a grisly fate, right?"

"That's the spirit." Elizabeth replies. "Now finish with breakfast Lass. We have a long day ahead of us."

You have to admit. The gym is pretty awesome. Situated in a compound nacelle in the woods outside the manor, it easily dwarfs your high school's gym. Even more amazing, its only part of the training facility, which includes both an indoor and outdoor firing range as well. Some time you're going to have to ask Elizabeth and Catherine how they could afford all this.

But right now, you have more pressing things to think about. Like which of the vast array of weapons sitting on the table in front of you that you want to use…

[] The Dory: The favored weapon of the Greek Hoplite, this 8 foot long spear will allow you to use both it and your shield Aegis to the best of your abuilities, though at a slight cost in terms of damage. +5 for attacks, +20 for defense as well as giving Alexa a counter attack ability, damage cap at 75.

[] Arming Sword: The Medieval sword offers a better offensive ability compared to the Dory while still retaining your shield, though your defense won't be as strong thanks to the need to get up close and personal with the enemy. +10 for attacks, +10 for defense, damage out of one 100 sided die.

[] Longsword: A large, two handed sword. This monster gives you immense offensive ability but forces you to forgo your shield. +20 for attack, damage roll two 100-sided die.

... so my mentally calling this guy 'super Robin Hood' was an understatement.

Ten bucks says that was blood.

Roman Legionaries, eat your hearts out.

... so my mentally calling this guy 'super Robin Hood' was an understatement.
Let me put it this way... Catherine's perfectly capable of wiping the floor with the rest of your team with the exception of Elizabeth (and that's only because of the one hit kill arrows Liz has) even in a 5 on 1 fight... and she only managed to pull off a tie against this guy.

Part 12
You walk down the table before coming to a stop in front of one of the spears. It's around eight feet in length, with a bronze colored ten-inch blade shaped like a flattened fig leaf at one end and a smaller bronze spike at the other.

This one. Athena says.

You sure? You ask her.

Yes, The goddess of battle strategy replies. There are merits to the modern arms, but the battle-tested classics will serve you the best.

Given that she's a Greek war god, and thus might actually know better than you this one time, you decide to just go with what she says. Picking up the spear with both hands, you're surprised by how light the spear is, easily twirled around in your left hand.

"You should be carrying that in your right hand." Catherine says walking up behind you. "Your left hand is the one the Hoplon rests on."

"The what?"

"Your shield…" She says slightly irritated, holding your left wrist and the bracelet it's wearing up in front of your face.

"Right." You say, backpedaling. "This your go-to weapon as well?" You ask her.

Catherine shakes her head. "Long weapons like spears tend to be a bit unwieldy with how I fight and Bast's abilities, so I try to stay with short swords and knives. But my parents wanted me as well rounded as possible back before they knew who I was going to be the host of, and I still try to keep my skills honed."

"And I take it you're going to be my instructor?"

Catherine nods at your question. "Now, activate your shield."

"Sure thing," You reply. "Except I don't know how to do so."

"Try imagining the shield on your arm." Catherine remarks. "It's how most of us summon our weapons, and how my knives can change into whatever weapon I desire." As if to make her point, she pulls out a rather tiny knife, only about five inches in length, from a sheath on the small of her back and begins to twirl it in her hands. Within seconds she's holding a two foot long sword in her hand.

You close your eyes, imagine the giant piece of metal that had protected you the night before sitting on your left arm. Slowly, you feel a slight tingle as the leather guard wraps around your forearm, a leather handle forming in the palm of your hand, then without warning, your arm lurches down as the rest of the shield materializes, knocking you off balance with its weight.

"Good," Elizabeth remarks, pulling a training dummy towards you. "Now, try making a few practice jabs into this mannequin. Just focus on thrusts and jabs right now. Any slashes you make in a real enemy would be next to pointless because of how little penetration you'd achieve, though the can be useful for sweeping a foe of his feet."

You do as she says. The first few hits are clumsy and nearly glance off the mannequin as you get use to the weight of the spear and the fact that you're now being forced to use your off hand. But after a hours' time, you feel you're getting the hang of it, able to land consecutive blows more often than not.

"Good work." Catherine says as you grab a quick drink of water. "I think you're ready for a more 'lively' opponent."

You discern her meaning immediately. "Wait a second, you want me to fight you with this?" You respond, holding up your spear. "Aren't you a little afraid of getting stabbed?"

"Personally… not particularly." Catherine comments. "Though I wasn't planning on using our own weapons. Here..." She says, throwing you another spear. It's identical to yours, but a quick finger flick to the blade reveals it to be a hardened rubber similar to a car tire. "See, perfectly safe. So, what do you say?"

[] Sure.
[] Maybe someone else...
-[] Eric.
-[] Christina.
[] Are you sure I can't practice on something less... alive.

Yes, The goddess of battle strategy replies. There are merits to the modern arms, but the battle-tested classics will serve you the best.
... did you just call medieval weaponry 'modern'?

... DI's gonna smack us down.

[X] Sure.
This is gonna be fun.

Part 13
"Sure." You say, picking up the fake spear.

A frown forms across Elizabeth's face as Catherine puts on a pair of brown fingerless gloves and readies her own weapons, another medieval sword and a large hunting knife. "Are you sure this is a good idea Catherine?"

Catherine just rolls her eyes. "The quickest way for Alexa to become combat ready is for her to practice against the rest of us, and we both know I have the most control over my abilities out of any of us. She might end up a little bruised, but she is in no real danger."

You see Elizabeth relent, though the fact that she still has a frown on her face leads you to believe she still isn't completely okay with this.

"The point of this is simple." Catherine begins as the two of you walk onto the training mat. "First one to knock down their opponent ten times wins."

You nod as you get into your combat stance, the edge of your shield hovering just below your eyes and spear aimed out in front of you. Catherine crouches down in her stance, the sword in her left arm poised to strike while her right hand holds the knife in a reverse grip out in front of her. Oddly enough she closes her eyes as if meditating.

Seems like a foolish thing to leave yourself open like that. You comment to yourself. What's preventing me from walking over there and…

Catherine's eyes shoot open, their natural blue replaced by a startling gold hue as they lock onto you.

Oh shit… Is all you can think before she attacks.

In a flash, her right hand goes from the knife handle to the tip of its blade before she throws it at you. You duck behind your shield, easily blocking the strike. Looking back up, you expect to find Catherine charging you. She's nowhere to be found though, having seemingly disappeared.

Behind you. Comes Athena belated warning. You barely have time for your brain to acknowledge it when you feel your feet swept out from under you, your head slamming against the mat. Groaning, look up you see the tip of Catherine's sword resting against your chin.

"How the…" You begin to ask before Catherine cuts you off.

"As a host of Bast, I have superhuman agility…"

You jab your spear at her legs.

"And superhuman reflexes." She finishes, effortlessly batting your attack away. "You didn't honestly expect that to work, did you?"

"Worth a shot." You say, picking yourself up. You barely regain your balance before Catherine's next attack comes.

You easily block the sword strike by Catherine, leaving her open to a spear jab that you deliver to her shoulder. Catherine flinches back, clutching her shoulder in pain.

"Sorry." You say, belatedly realizing that was the one she injured last night.

"Don't be." Catherine replies smiling. "Going for a wound is a sound strategy, and you shouldn't be pulling your punches in training."

Without another moment's rest she launches her knife at you again. It's the same move as before, and one you now see coming a mile away. Ducking to avoid the knife, you whip your shield around behind you. This time, you're rewarded with a sickening crack as the shield connects with something most definitely human.

Turning around, you see Catherine kneeling on the ground coughing, one arm wrapped around her chest and a spreading saint of blood on her shirt. You recoil in horror at what you just did, dropping the spear and shrinking Aegis back down to bracelet size.

"I'm okay. " She says through ragged breaths as she tries to get up, only to fall back to the floor. Both Eric and Elizabeth rush past you to help her, Elizabeth muttering something about how she knew this was going to happen under her breath as she picks her sister up off the floor.

"Don't worry lass." Liz says looking back at you. "Things like this happen from time to time. I'll have her fit as a fiddle in no time." If her words were meant to make you feel better, they fail. "I think we've done enough training for today Alexa. Why don't you go with Christina and Colin to get settled while I patch my sister up?" You nod before backing away and heading over to where the two were watching your little fight.

"So," Christina asks, her arm around your shoulder. "Where do you want to go?"

[] Back to my room.
[] I remember Catherine saying their was a firing range.
[] You wouldn't happen to know of any good spots to disappearing in this mansion would you?
[] Write-in.

So after seeing an attack once, we can perfectly counter it.
Damn Athena, you scary.

Let's bury nearly killing our instructor with DAKKA!
