Edit: Since approval voting seems to be allowed, I will also vote for this.

[X] Medicine Master

The current top three plans are
Medicine Master: 10 Votes (Sage, Elixirs)
Social Medicine: 9 Votes (Family, Elixirs)
Ranching Business: 8 Votes (Merchant, Beasts)

I plan to close the vote in approximately 24 hours. Unless it is still both a close vote and votes are still coming in.

[X] Plan: Ranching Business

Changing up if I already voted. Elixir crafting is basically the same as last game, which while interesting, isn't novel.

So... I find myself having approval-voted in both of the front-runners because, while not exactly what I wanted, they were reasonably close. I'm curious if anyone has any arguments to make in support of their preferred answer.

- For Ranching Business, the obvious downside is that it doesn't really lean into our major healing/alchemy bonus from being wood/wood. Are we just... ignoring that benefit? If not, then how do you see us folding "and also alchemy and healing" into being a merchant of best flesh?

- For Medicine Master, it's exactly the opposite. It is clearly all in on the alchemy and medicine. So... what else is there? What does this character do that isn't just "grind alchemy forever and maybe heal people sometimes"?

I'd say that alchemy and healing would go a long way towards making sure that said Spirit Beasts are healthy and of a high quality. Especially if we can do things like use alchemy products to directly enhance the Spirit Beasts we're breeding.

Plus, it's different. I've seen Cultivator Quests where the main work of the MC was alchemy, but not one where it was Spirit Beast raising.

As I see it, nothing stops us from leaning into an alchemy/healing focus early on as a secondary ability to support the spirit beasts as well as get rich, while it feels harder to do things the other way around.

The SB choice also comes with a lv5 School as opposed to lv3 and lv2, and quality trumps quantity in the system as is, not to mention it lets us start with a spirit beast companion to begin with, which this patches up our early combat weakness and just sounds much more interesting.

It synergizes pretty well too - beast parts being used for alchemy is a common trope in xianxia stories, they can presumably benefit from consuming elixirs themselves too, and we can probably use the spirit beasts we end up rearing both to clean up the wilderness around the barony (which is said to be dangerous) and to protect herb gardens and the like which could be useful for the medicinal focus too. Beasts of burden also carry various benefits for any society that uses them, not to mention the obvious military edges we end up having and boosts to our personal combat power (+while I probably wouldn't like a full xianxia pokemon quest focus, a moderate amount of that sounds like it could be very fun)

If I explain my own thoughts I don't expect us to ignore alchemy just because we start with beast, I do however expect spirit beast would be seen as too much an action sink and too outside of our wheelhouse because we're not a fighter if we started with an alchemy focus because...well they are an action and money sink if not pre-established.

This is just a pick for top skills and main starting bonuses. There is nothing to stop Ranching Business from developing and using/selling poisons and pills on the side. Nor is there any reason that Medicine Master can't become a peerless Wood technique master as well.
There may be another skill vote after this. Or perhaps the Young Master has been well trained in all areas outside of those selected this vote.

I don't disagree it's a possibility but I have no reason to believe in it. I've seen how voters work in multiple quest like this, that's why I don't believe we'll actually do anything interesting with the all too underappreciated spirit beast if we don't pick them now.

Spirit Beast are incredibly fucking interesting and are damn near always ignored.

So, looks like we're currently looking at
- Ranching Business: 13
- Medicine Master: 12
- Social Medicine: 9

With a bit more than half an hour to go on the "close unless it's close and votes are still coming in" time.

Given that the top two are one away from each other, and the last vote was something like 5 minutes ago, I'm thinking that vote close may be somewhat delayed.

Actually, assuming we're counting the non-plan votes, it's currently tied at 13 each for Ranching Business and Medicine Master, with 10 for Social Medicine.
