New 'The Batman' Film (2021?)

I feel like if you're going to a mobster series set in Gotham you need to bring in all the other mob-themed weirdos and freaks. Black Mask, Two Face, Great White Shark, Ventriloquist, etc. Otherwise what are you even doing, huh?

'The Batman,' a 2022 blockbuster, wasn't plagiarized, US judge rules
Warner Bros Entertainment didn't steal the plot for its 2022 blockbuster "The Batman" from a writer who created a story about the caped crusader three decades earlier, a federal judge in Manhattan ruled on [March 27].

U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer also said the writer Christopher Wozniak infringed copyrights belonging to DC Comics, which employed him as a freelance artist in 1990 when he wrote "The Ultimate Riddle," later retitled "The Blind Man's Hat."

...

Wozniak claimed he was "stunned" to learn that "The Batman" was a near copy of "The Ultimate Riddle," with the Riddler terrorizing a Gotham City beset by crime and controlled by a corrupt banking cartel.

But in a 45-page decision, Engelmayer said Wozniak intentionally and without consent lifted material from DC Comics' works to create his story, which "liberally exploits --indeed, is rife with" Batman characters and plot elements.

...

Wozniak sued Warner Bros in October 2022. DC Comics, which has thousands of copyrights dating to 1941 for Batman works, sued Wozniak two months later.

Did the dude literally sue over his fanfiction?
The guy's claim seems to be that he wrote up a Batman movie treatment/pitch thing that wasn't used then but which he argues the new movie used. So it's not at that level by any means.

No idea as to the legitimacy of the claims however.

  • Someone got the dates mixed up: The coffin says Riddler killed Falcone in 2022, but all the dates in the movie indicated it occurred in 2019.
  • Someone took cues from Gotham by having Oz's mother be a supporting character.
  • Sofia "The Hangman" Falcone - more references to her character in Batman: Dark Victory.

Per HBO, the spinoff series starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti opened to 5.3 million U.S. viewers across all platforms since its debut on Sept. 19. That includes repeat airings on HBO as well as streaming viewership. That puts it above the final season premiere of "Succession," which drew 4.9 million viewers, and the second season premiere of "The White Lotus," which drew 4.1 million. It also falls just behind the premiere of "True Detective: Night Country," which nabbed 5.7 million viewers.

Additionally, the show has landed the biggest 4-day audience for a new series on Max in every region globally since "The Last of Us" in Jan. 2023.

The show has also found plenty of love with critics, with "The Penguin" currently holding a 94% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The show remains the most-watched current HBO or Max title debut season globally behind only "House of the Dragon" and "The Last of Us."

Great show all up, really engaging from week to week. Extremely effective at getting you to root for a guy who, all things considered, is seriously bad news. The ending is very strong in that respect.

Yeah great show all the way through, Cristin Milioti's Sofia was a particular highlight for me. Annoyingly it's gonna probably be like Andor with Star Wars and make me give DC stuff more of a chance going forwards cause what if its as good as Penguin was y'know?
