Arc 2: Chapter 8

    While Kushina was busy inhaling her ramen with the force of a wind tunnel, you leaned towards Jiao and whispered, "Hey you okay?"

    "Mind your own business." Jiao barked, giving you an ugly sneer.

    "No, seriously what's wrong? You look really out of it." you seriously said, giving Jiao an understanding look.

    "...I feel awkward eating a handmade meal from someone I barely know." Jiao answered after a pause. "Where I come from...it's unwise to accept a free meal."

    "Oh. You think Kushina will poison you?" you muttered. You looked at Kushina piling more ramen into her bowl, completely oblivious of the conversation. You then slurped up some of your ramen before turning back to Jiao. "See? It's alright. Plus, you were fine whenever we got something from the restaurants and such. Why is this a worry now?"

    "Foolish...I suppose a mere commoner wouldn't understand. You should have noticed I only ate after you did. But I suppose this food is alright to ingest." Jiao coldly replied, now eating small amounts of the ramen. You wanted to continue the conversation, but decided to leave it be for now. Trying to pry information out of Jiao wouldn't help at all. You went back to eating and even took seconds, the ramen was that good!

    Finally, Jiao finished her meal and excused herself from the table. You looked at her empty bowl and sighed. It was then Kushina finally spoke up, "So...I heard everything."

    "Honestly I kinda figured you did. Thanks for not butting in. Jiao is..." you trailed off with a large sigh.

    "Nah, I get it, y'know? Wasn't my place to intrude. I wonder what life she'd led to be fearful of someone trying to poison her food..." Kushina worriedly asked, obviously not expecting an answer.

    "Anyway, thanks for the food Kushina. It was amazing!" you suddenly said, changing the subject.

    "Oh, no problem! Would you mind helping me wash the dishes?" Kushina asked. You agreed and helped brought in all the dishes and utensils into the kitchen. With two people, washing the dishes was rather quick and easy. After you were done, Kushina said, "Alright, I'll take care of everything else for the night. There's an extra guest room upstairs. Get some rest, like I said we start bright and early tomorrow!"

    "Alright Kushina-sensei!" you said with gusto, eager to start training. It would be the first time you've trained under someone since your father all those years ago. You went upstairs and found the room in question. It was rather plain, but the bed looked comfortable enough! You saw Kushina had prepared a set of nightclothes for you to sleep in, and a set of training wear. You smiled and changed into the nightclothes, slipping into bed and quickly drifting off to sleep once more...

    When Kushina said you'd start bright and early, she meant it! She opened your door just before the crack of dawn and shouted with a loud and commanding voice, "Get up, Maya! It's time to train! You have thirty minutes to get ready, meet me behind the house!"

    You groaned and sat up, rubbing the sleep from your eyes. You knew Kushina was excited, but you didn't realize what you were getting into. Anyway, you quickly showered and put on the training clothes, a simple black sleeveless shirt with baggy pants, giving you plenty of room the maneuver. You raced downstairs and to the back of the house where you saw Kushina in her shinobi outfit, her long hair tied into a ponytail.

    "Good time!" Kushina said with a smile. "Now before we start anything, we'll do some exercises. Follow me!"

    And you did so, doing stretches and exercises to loosen up your body. After that was done, Kushina then asked, "Alright. You said you had some shinobi training. What's your speciality? What do you mainly use? Taijutsu, ninjutsu, or genjutsu?"

    "Actually I'm fairly skilled in all areas, but genjutsu is my strongest trait." you answered truthfully.

    "Oh. That's interesting. In that case I wanna see how you do in a spar before we plan out a schedule! Now come at me like it's a real battle, because I know I will!" Kushina exclaimed, getting into a battle stance. You responded with a large grin.

    Now how will you start?

    [] Go in for some taijutsu! Simple, but a good way to start the fight off!

    [] See how Kushina does against some ninjutsu! Wash her away with Violent Water Wave!

    [] Use Stains of Time to distort Kushina's sense of time then follow up with a Touch of Paralysis!

    [X] Use Siren Scream and follow up by engaging in taijutsu with Wood Release: Wooden Arm. Focus the blows at her legs to handicap her

    This is what we need most. Not interested in really beating her but showing her what we need training in. Doubt she can help much with genjutsu.

    "Get ready, Kushina-sensei!" you declared, rushing forward with the intent of using taijutsu. You started off simple seeing how she'd deal with a straight punch, but Kushina easily parried the strike and countered with her own! You ducked under her punch and jumped up for an uppercut, however Kushina tilted her head back, dodging your strike. She reared back her arm and thrusted her fist at your stomach, but you raised your knee up to block the strike! You regretted it as a sharp pain ran down your leg from the pure force of her blow, sending you skidding backwards!

    "Ow..." you muttered, but you didn't have any time to recover as Kushina pushed her advantage, coming at out with a multitude of blows! You tried to dodge as much as you could, and what you couldn't dodge was painfully blocked. But you noticed how in every strike Kushina followed through, her stance sturdy, making every punch and kick being a possible KO shot. This was a practiced fighting style! You were breathing hard and your body was aching, but eventually you noticed a slip in Kushina's guard, her left arm was a bit more lax than it usually was.

    You didn't know if it was an accident or she was holding back a bit too much, but you weren't going to let it go to waste. You ducked under a swing from Kushina and feinted with a right handed punch, aiming upwards towards Kushina's face. The second she tried to defend, you twisted your body and threw a spinning kick that managed to catch Kushina off guard, slamming into her left side and sending her stumbling!

    Now you had the advantage! You rushed in and delivered a leg sweep, knocking her further off balance! You planned to follow up with a punishing blow to her exposed stomach, but Kushina stuck out her arm, stopping her fall and using the momentum to perform a very nimble cartwheel! You spun around but before you could defend yourself, Kushina struck you in the middle of your torso with more force than before, sending you crashing backwards until you were a crumpled heap on the ground.

    "Well, I didn't expect that! You still good to go?" Kushina excitedly asked. You got to your feet, feeling pretty winded from that single punch. However Kushina wasn't even sweating, as if those intense bouts didn't tax her in the slightest! It was then you noticed Jiao was watching the sparring match from the edge of the training ground. She probably didn't have much else to do.

    "I ain't done yet!" you declared, wondering how you'll go about your next action...

    [] Up the ante! Open the First Gate and go in for close quarters combat!

    [] Time to play with some range! Use Violent Water Wave and Lightning Surge!

    [] Break out the heavy weaponry! Combine Fierce Echo and Siren's Scream and attack while Kushina is distracted!

    [] Go all out! Use Stains of Time and then open the Second Gate to deliver your strongest strike!

    This one should play by our strenghts and not be too unsportsman like. This is a spar.

    You chained together hand seals before spitting out a large wave of water! Kushina looked impressed at the jutsu and prepared to counter until she saw you were making more hand seals. "Lightning Release: Lightning Surge!"

    Your hands crackled with lightning as you smacked the wet earth, sending lightning coursing through the entire wave you made! Suddenly your water jutsu curved to the side and splashed harmlessly against a tree. Both you and Kushina looked at Jiao, whose eyes were wide open.

    "M-Maya! You used...lightning?!" Jiao exclaimed, her face pale.

    "Yes...?" you replied in confusion.

    "That's a holy element! Only those who are related to the gods themselves can use lightning! What are you...are you..." Jiao explained before trailing off.

    "Jiao, this might be a culture shock, but in Jihopan, Lightning is a common element we use." Kushina said gently.

    "B-But...I-I..." Jiao stuttered, looking absolutely horrified. "I must...rest."

    Jiao quickly flew away, much to Kushina's surprise. You winced and hoped Jiao would be seen by nobody else. Kushina turned towards you, a questioning gaze piercing through you. You were quick to say, "Jiao will be fine. Just leave her be for now."

    "...If you say so." Kushina sighed, crossing her arms. "Get ready, Maya! The warm up is over!"

    You nodded and prepared to make more hand seals...but Kushina was already in front of you and rearing back her fist! You prepared to block the attack, but Kushina suddenly shot out her leg, slamming it into your side and sending you flying! You felt the wind violently leave your lungs but managed to catch yourself before hitting a nearby tree. Before you could even recover, Kushina sped forward for a brutal punch to your stomach. You wheezed in pain as you crumbled to the ground, holding your stomach and trying to gasp for air.

    "I know you can do better, Maya!" Kushina seriously said, raising her foot into the air for an axe kick! You managed to swap places with a nearby rock right before Kushina landed the attack, the poor rock shattering into dust. You got to your feet, wondering why Kushina got more aggressive.

    What will you do?!

    [] Open the Second Gate and strike Kushina with all your might! If she's getting serious, then you will as well!

    [] Wait for Kushina to rush you, then defend with Imperial Wall! See if she can smash through metal!

    [] Use the Siren's Scream + Fierce Echo combo and strike while Kushina is distracted!

    [] Use Stains of Time and try to finish the fight with Touch of Paralysis!

    I think it's time we use a genjutsu.
    We told her this was our strength and the other choices could be interpreted as holding back.
    Although opening the second gate could also be pretty good.

    If Kushina wanted better, then she'll get what she asked for! Kushina kept up an aggressive pace and tried to attack you, but you switched places with more rocks and rapidly made hand seals. Kushina turned around for another attack, but you opened your mouth and screamed, your dual genjutsu hitting Kushina as she grit her teeth, completely stunned. With a grin, you rushed forward to attack only to freeze as you sensed Kushina's chakra skyrocketing!

    Crimson chakra bubbled into existence, pouring out of her body. Thick, whisker like marks appeared on her face, her eyes now had vertical slits, and she was baring her teeth, revealing sharpened fangs. Kushina appeared right in front of you, your body too slow to react. She was rearing her fist back, her fingernails having been turned into claws. You could only close your eyes and prepare for the blow, but nothing ever came. Opening your eyes, you saw Kushina looking at you, now back to normal. Her arms were crossed and she had a rather annoyed look on her face.

    "K-Kushina-sensei?" you muttered.

    "Maya, why did you lie to me?" Kushina bluntly asked, keeping her arms crossed.

    "W-What?" you responded, trying your best to sound confused.

    "I know you said you were slightly trained...but those skills are far beyond anything a civilian could perform with minor training. I had my doubts from when you said you were skilled in all three shinobi arts, especially genjutsu, it's the hardest art to learn compared to ninjutsu and taijutsu. When we started, it's obvious taijutsu wasn't your strong point, but you could keep up with me! Then you used two elemental jutsu for a combination attack as smoothly as any Jonin, and finally, your genjutsu was powerful. Powerful enough that I had to use the fox to break out of it!" Kushina explained, sounding rather annoyed.

    "I-"

    "Not to mention Jiao. I don't know what her powers are, but she managed to easily deflect that combination jutsu of yours, then she FLEW away! That's an extremely rare power, only the Tsuchikage and Kotei can fly, to my knowledge!" Kushina exclaimed. "I...simply can't believe your story anymore."

    You closed your eyes and took a deep breath. You needed your mind clear for this. You opened your eyes and looked at Kushina, asking a simple question. "So...what are you going to do?"

    "That depends on you, honestly." Kushina replied, sounding like a very stern parent. "I just want the honest truth. Otherwise, I may have to report you. We both don't want that, but...this is my homeland. I'd be an awful kunoichi if I let spies run around."

    You took another deep breath. You had a few choices here. You could spill the entire truth to Kushina, you could try spinning a more believable lie, or you could stick to your old story. Every option has its risks...

    What will you do?

    Critical Moment!

    [] Tell Kushina the truth about everything. Even about the Rinnegan if needed. You can't afford to be locked away!

    [] Tell Kushina the truth, but keep certain things such as your Rinnegan and being here under Byakuren's orders secret.

    [] Make up a lie about how you are a former Mist Shinobi who rebelled against a particularly barbaric order, and rescued Jiao during a prison break.

    [] Stick to your old story. Just because you're strong doesn't mean the old story doesn't work!
