Monster Musume Host Quest: Your Life with Monstergirls

Prologue 2: Getting to Know You
VOTING IS NOW CLOSED.

Your name is Chiyori Takai, and right now you are trying very hard not to be irritated with the obnoxious female agent sitting in your living room. You generally consider yourself a patient woman, but she was currently getting your favorite lounge chair completely soaked and asking questions she obviously already knew the answers to.

'Huh. Wouldn't have guessed.'

That comment probably would have gotten to you if you were a bit more high-strung. It wasn't like you really made a secret of your asexuality, and you were used to people judging or misunderstanding you. Honestly, you've heard far worse from people you trust a lot more.

"...I live in a suburban area," you state acidly, letting the 'duh' hang unspoken at the end of your comment. "
1010 Laural Place, Athens, Georgia. In the United States of America. Should I list the continent I live on too?"

"I don't think that will be necessary," replies Jones with a mild chuckle.

Thunder cracks outside, and you spare a quick glance out the window. You weren't worried about your house, the trees nearby were pretty sturdy and the structure was well built, but if any branches came down in your front yard the homeowners association would have your head. The Powers-That-Be in the Tanglebrook community were already upset that a newcomer like you had managed to snag one of their exclusive (and expensive) houses, but there was nothing they could do. The previous owner lost everything in a rather foolhardy business venture, and needed to sell in a hurry. You were the first to put down cash and your check cleared, so as long as you didn't break any of their rules or 'bring down the value of the other homes in the community' they were stuck with you.

It had been a steal, too. 1.5 acres of land and 5000 square feet of space complete with vaulted ceilings, four bedrooms, a sunroom, and a pool in the backyard. The workers barely had to renovate it to accommodate your new guests. By all rights it was worth twice what you paid for it.

"What exactly do you do for a living that you can afford this place, anyway?" Agent Jones asked, practically reading your mind. You might have thought her nosey, but you remembered that occupation really had been one of the questions on the form.

"I'm a..."

---

[ ] Building Contractor. You oversee the construction of high-end residences like the one in which you currently reside, and you already have some ideas on ways to improve your new home. The homeowners association had initially refused to allow you to modify the house...until you showed them some of the other things you've done. They have since given you free reign to do whatever you want to the place, provided you come work on their homes next.

[ ] Former Military/Law Enforcement. Following two successful tours of duty (you saw heavy action in both), you have 'retired' to a nice peaceful life in the local police. Affording this place took every bit of your savings, but you're used to living frugally. On the plus side, you're insanely fit: your buddies always joked that a horse could probably kick you in the head and you'd just walk it off. Coming home in your police uniform also does wonders for getting the respect/fear of the uptight rich folks who live here.

[ ] Programmer. You dropped out of high school and skipped college because you realized they had nothing to teach you. Code is practically your native language. It took years of effort to build up your reputation, but you've finally made it. National companies actively engage in bidding wars for your services as a technical consultant. Admittedly, your physique isn't much to write home about, but you're loaded enough to have bought a few extra upgrades to the house yourself, and you get to work from home!

[ ] Veterinarian. Ever since your first trip to the zoo, you knew what you wanted to do with your life. After getting your doctorate in veterinary medicine, you want through a residency program specializing in the treatment of exotic animals and now have finally set up your own practice. You've treated everything from foxes to snakes to lions to bald eagles, and after saving Mrs Applewrite's prize Pomeranian from choking on her own collar, you've actually become pretty popular with the community.

[ ] None (Independently Wealthy). Your mother was the head of a rather extensive corporate empire before she became a Senator, so you've never had to worry about money. Thanks to having cashed out your sizable trust fund and made some very lucrative investments with it, you probably never will either. You don't have much in the way of skills, but when you are this rich, you don't need them. You've already had the entire house ripped down to the studs and personalized for you and your guests.

[ ] Other _____________

---

"Right, I knew I remembered you for a reason," mused Jones as she wrote down your profession. "Last question, then we get down to your new friends. I need to know three of your major hobbies."

"My hobbies are..."

Asexual Bonus Round!

Asexuality is generally considered a spectrum, not a single state. For the purposes of this quest you may select from four separate states that all fall under the umbrella of asexuality:

[ ] Demisexual - you cannot experience sexual attraction unless you have already formed a strong emotional bond with the person. Please note that there is a difference between demisexuality, which involves attraction, and "I don't have sex unless I love someone", which has to do with behavior.
[ ] Gray Asexual - you infrequently experience sexual attraction and experience very low sexual desire. Gray-asexuals differ from demisexuals in that demisexuals will require an emotional bond before experiencing any attraction, yet 'graces' do not necessarily require a bond. The word "gray" comes from the "gray area" between asexuality and non-asexuality.
[ ] Asexual (Averse) - you cannot experience sexual attraction, period. You understand the appeal of sex from an intellectual point of view, but generally find the rest of the world's constant obsession with naked people swapping bodily fluids to be baffling. You have nothing against sex, it's just not for you.
[ ] Asexual (Repulsed) - not only can you not experience sexual attraction, thinking about such things sickens you. While cognitively you understand sex and you do not think the act is somehow 'wrong', you can't help but find it...gross. You are fine with anatomy as an abstract, but sexual situations will always be a source of extreme discomfort.

Just because asexuals are disinterested in sex does not mean they are disinterested in romance. Unless they are. Though there are many forms of romantic attraction, all of which apply regardless of whether one is asexual, for simplicity's sake you may choose between two:

[ ] Aromantic - you have no romantic inclination toward any gender.
[ ] Panromantic - you are romantically inclined toward everyone, regardless of gender

In the event that the group chooses to abstain on these choices, Chiyori will default to Asexual (Averse) and Aromantic.

The use of absolute wording in these descriptions is intended only for the purposes of game clarity and should not be taken as statements of fact. In real life such things aren't nearly as clear cut. The definitions for demisexual and gray asexual are paraphrased from the Glossary at the Asexuality Archive.

I'm not too keen on Programmer even if everyone on SV is a NEET and it appeals to us. For one thing, it vaguely implies that the programmer isn't as socially fluent. "Code is your native language." I'm not sure if that was intended, but it does point that way. It's also the profession most likely to come in conflict with the Homeowner's Association, and those things are distilled cruelty forced into the shape of human beings. I'd really rather not touch anything to do with them. The Builder is used by them, the Enforcement intimidates them, and the Rich Person ignores them.

On the other hand, Veterinarian is the only profession who gets along with them, and the most likely to get to politely ask them about business and deal with them from behind a veneer of civility, which defangs them.

It's also biologically competent, probably capable in first aid for a variety of critters (though maybe liminals are special), and probably more able to read the body language of vaguely animal-ish people. Though not all liminals are 'animal+person,' and they're certainly going to have their own needs, the Veterinarian is best equipped to handle those needs personally rather than bull through them or hand it off to someone else.

This would allow for actual, genuine connection as a host, rather than as a middleman for people who actually do things, regardless of a wider variety of guest temperaments. Although I can see other professions getting on well with certain subsets of liminals, the Veterinarian remains the best-equipped to handle liminals in general.

[X] Dance
[X] Tailoring/Fashion Design
[X] Hunting/Fishing

Each of the hobbies I'm voting for are a potential point of connection with foreign cultures with different physiologies. Dance and Tailoring, especially, will require a lot of work to function between two partners with radical body shapes. Hunting/Fishing is a connection to food and diet, and a lot of the liminal cultures gave me the impression that these were still popular among them, too.

Dance and Hunting/Fishing also keep Ms. MC active and are a way to connect to liminals requiring more activity, and Tailoring/Fashion Design give her something to do when she needs to sit down. At the same time, one of these hobbies plays up, one is flexible, and one plays down. Regardless of a guests' preference, there's something Ms. MC is able to do with them.

I think that if Ms. MC was chosen to be a host, her hobbies would also reflect that she has multiple potential ways to engage with her guests.

[X] Asexual (Repulsed)
[X] Aromantic

This part of my vote is the most likely to be rejected, but the combination of these appeals to me for a number of reasons. Firstly, I'd rather 'shipping' be kept to a minimum, and be replaced by actual chemistry.

I mean, really, it's a MonMusu quest. There's going to be something like that. Whether or not the MC is involved in the love polygon, I'd rather their involvement not be because of an offhand comment in their narration being taken as a gospel of interest. Their being explicitly aromantic eliminates the possibility of that silliness.

Second, the romantic attachment being coupled with an unwillingness, rather than an apathy, to perform a key part of the relationships of most people, is more compelling as a character arc.

Finally, and most trivially, the idea of a veterinarian, who has trouble thinking about sex, going from a work disposition equipped to deal with all sorts of bodily processes to a home disposition and suddenly being all sorts of squeamish about it is kind of funny to me.

Valid points, I'd just rather pick the profession I find the most fun than the one that comes with the least drawbacks.

I agree that Veterinarian probably helps with our social skills, I think that Volunteer Work might lead to special events, and I don't have a preference as to romance so I'm not making votes for that section.

There are arguments to be made for other professions. 'Preference' is always valid, though not likely to convince many others.

There is also a significant drawback to Vet I didn't mention. It takes up much more time than some of the other options and requires physical presence for work, and so has much less leeway in actually interacting with the guests. A lot of the Vet's day is taken up by actually being at work.

Chosen so that our main motivation is finding out how these creatures tick. Obviously, they all look part human and part animal, but how does their biology work?

We have the expertise to back-up our research, and the skills needed to keep our guests company.

Of course, we can't all forget the ability to look good while doing it. Otherwise, what's the point?

[X] Building Contractor.
Easy way to continue upgrading house for more exotic guests. Money won't be an issue, plus it puts us on relatively good terms with the neighbors if not as positive as vet.

IC, it allows us to connect with the guests as we can aim to design buildings that can accommodate both humans and monsters, and figure out solutions for housing the more extreme races. eg What does an arachne look for in a luxury hotel?

This stuff I don't care about so much. But sex averse at least allows us to dodge the PC salivating over a mon that's potentially someone's anti-fetish. This way its all about personality.

Durability (Cop) + Kindness (Volunteering) + Good Cooking (...Cooking) = Female Kurusu

The tailoring is really just a bit of a bonus -- some Liminals need special clothes, and we can help maintain what they have or make new designs (eventually).

Sexual attraction is for QQ. I'm stickin' to 'nah' when it comes to anything but platonic relationships.

There are benefits and drawbacks to all the professions. One of the Vet's biggest weaknesses (beyond a general lack of disposable income) is that she is generally on call 24-7 and may even have to leave home for days at a time. If the Vet is chosen, a decent amount of effort will have to be invested in making sure your guests can be left alone and unsupervised for prolonged periods.

The good news is that, for all professions besides Law Enforcement, you will be able to bring at least one of your guests to work with you on most days. This can either be helpful or hazardous, depending on what it is you do and what/who they are.
