Money and Power: A Xianxia Merchant Quest

You will need to include an Order for him to stop next quarter if you don't want him to uncover your mother's 'charitable' activities

Gotta make sure we dont forget this one. Mother stated he was purposely kept clean. So he prob wont react well and its best to keep him clean.

Fun chapter. Cool to watch the effects of our decisions. But yeah id like to note that we need to not only raise our prestige next quarter but also protect our stability and avoud spending too much. Our enemies are sure to try and strike at either our stability or make us bleed money even faster.

I think the best bet would be an even approach at building prestige and income. Currently money is our biggest problem and weakpoint but if prestige goes much lower then we will be in serious shit.

we have walking fortresses next turn I think we can try to trade again with the fortress as protection and a big stick, while we focus most the the trading with the turtle islands first
as for Prestige, I think we need to be seem in public doing things, and we have a good bodyguard so we should be ok for now,

I think we really need to focus prestige next turn. We can tolerate a few more turns of losing money, but if our enemies start seriously attacking us we'll not be able to keep our money making operations running.

Alright, stem the bleeding of money, defend from outside interference, and improve our prestige. We probably can't swing everything.

We're gonna get some benefits from several things coming online and kicking into gear next turn, but we're gonna suffer a lot from outside interference. I'd say defend from external actors, increase prestige, and keep the bleeding from getting worse.

I say the Cash Bleed is our first priority.

We have good enough defense for outside interference (ie stability and "charity") and our planned long term shift could hopefully deter or at least delay retaliation from that lord.

Cash could be used to help pad other issues, but our income needs fixing first. I am hoping that the fortresses will either draw the retaliation and be cash neutral, or bring in enough income to promote expansion of their numbers.

@Mr. Prokosch maybe...

[X] Grand Tour + Keep Her Close (Oku) + Thrice Refined (Oku's armor)= The Matriarch's Guardian! +.1 stability +.05 Prestige

I say it above all because Oku's armor is awesome, right?

I would say that improving prestige is the most important right now. We can go another two quarters before our reserves are out at our current rate of spending and losses.
Since we already have the forge and everyone knows we have it, we may as well use it to show off. I brainstormed some ideas:
  • We might be able to make a cool road (Speeds travel? Protect's people on it?), a constant reminder and good symbol for a merchant clan. Something to test the upper limits of the scale of the forge, and presumably the simpler the item, the larger/faster we can make it.
  • Perhaps construct a fancy pyramid that we could then sell residences in? Not sure how impressive or useful this would be in this world.
  • Approach Lady Chalchiuhtlicue of the turtle Isles and see if she is interested in contracting us to make her a weapon or a ship? She can pay us with the Abyssals the weapon slays, or Heavenly Conduits if she is short on cash.
  • Forge some purpose built Weapons and armor for ourselves and go hunting Abyssals. It gives us fighting experience, wealth, and presumably martial glory that would be useful.

Not really sure what to put for a synergy bonus.

Turtle Islands
Salesemen report a very eager customer base, high demand, easy sales. +3 income.

Good, Good. I'm with @LordEdric in that we should prioritize the place without obvious problems.

Crystal Desert
Coordinated bandit attacks. Surviving salesemen report hostility and strong-arm tactics from local merchant clans. They believe the merchants and bandits are cooperating. -.1 stability, -$5

What scale of attack can our walking fortresses withstand? Are we already out punching the bandits (possibly re-enforced by local merchants) by a significant margin or should we consider secretly adding a few more formation weapons to the fortresses that trade here before we lose one?

Vast Swamp
Traversing the swamp even with local vehicles is a nightmare. The environment seems to shift whenever their attention lapses, and strange phantoms stalk them in the mists. After three failed expeditions, employees refuse to organize another border crossing without the walking fortresses. -.2 stability, -$5

Are our Walking Fortresses likely to get lost, or do they already come with navigation countermeasures to this sort of thing?

  • You welcomed Okuillin to the clan, honored her, and gave her fabulous gifts. She is a feared combatant and securing her loyalty showed strong leadership: +.1 Stability
  • You invented a new department to give your mom a job. It wasn't a major re-organization but any change to the business structure harms stability: - .05 stability, +.05 prestige.

Q2 Starting Clan Profile
Profit: -$16 per quarter
Reserves: $126
Status: 3 (Regional Power)
Prestige: 0.45 (Pathetic)
Stability: 1.05 (Stable)
Just wanted to note an error: our prestige should be at 0.55, not 0.45. It's missing an extra +0.1 Prestige somewhere in the calculation.
+.1+.05+.2 = +0.35 Prestige (Total Positive)
-0.2-0.1-0.1-0.1 = -0.5 Prestige (Total Negative)
0.7 +0.35 -0.5 = 0.55 Prestige

Also, our stability should be 0.75, not 1.05. It's missing the extra -0.3 Stability we lost from the failed Expansion into Crystal Desert & Vast Swamp.
+.2+.2+.1+.1+.1+.1+.1 = +0.9 Stability (Total Positive)
-.05-.1-.2-.1-.2 = -0.65 Stability (Total Negative)
0.5 +0.9 -0.65 = 0.75 Stability

As for possible synergy bonus, I have a few suggestions, the first was inspired by @Juli Freixi's idea on gaining more Crafting experience:
[X] Oku's Thrice Refined Armor + Upgrading Production Tools + Walking Fortresses = Increased crafting skill from using the Cosmic Forge
[X] New Department (PR) + Do Nothing (Trust Mom) = Shadow Government (Formally entrench a network of loyal agents within the Clan)
[X] New Hires (Finance) + New Department (PR) + New Expansion (Sales) + Oku's New Sub-Department (Collection) = Middle Management Trait for the Clan due to a quickly expanding Clan bureaucracy

Also, just wanted to say kudos on going for a novel focus of a Business Management Sim and making the writing interesting @Mr. Prokosch. I was a bit hesitant with the story's direction after Character Creation picked the Genius archetype, but I'm quite happy to learn that I enjoy Chachi's naivete, the family dynamics, and especially the grounded world-building in a Xianxia-esque setting. Another addition to the Watched list.

To beat your walking fortresses in an attack your enemies would need an army of normal cultivators, the dedicated effort of a specialist in transformation, or a glance from an annoyed Lord/Saint. You've never heard of a bandit in transformation and if such a bandit king arose they'd be a priority target by imperial agents, so you feel pretty secure about the fortresses. Beasts capable of threatening something like the Walking Fortress are very rare in the empire, possibly extinct.

Are our Walking Fortresses likely to get lost, or do they already come with navigation countermeasures to this sort of thing?

They are not equipped with navigation countermeasures but they are very, very long. Unlike the caravans, they can just walk right over most obstacles, including rivers and marshland. It's also impossible to split up like caravans. This makes navigation much easier but if the confusion is supernatural there's a risk that they get turned around.

[X] Oku's Thrice Refined Armor + Upgrading Production Tools + Walking Fortresses = Increased crafting skill from using the Cosmic Forge

This makes the most sense to me. Take a free +skill training to crafting. That puts you at Master.

Q2 Starting Clan Profile
Profit: -$17 per quarter
Reserves: $126
Status: 3 (Regional Power)
Prestige: 0.55 (Sad)
Stability: .75 (Shaky)

Note: I focused on your order vote last time but did not process Teo's non-vetoed orders. The totals are also updated to reflect corrections to my accounting.

Invest in caravans: in last report

Invest in training guards: -1 income, you have enough guards to staff the walking fortresses)

Secure new suppliers: Teo performed excellently here. With the exception of Heavenspan Water you currently have no supply shortages

Diversify by investing in Essence Crystals: The Matriarch used all the essence crystal stores and the new investments for her projects. The Cosmic Forge is hungry. Teo's efforts kept you from running out but there is no reserve.

Send a thoughtful gift and note to Lord Tlaloc: The note was sent, along with a rare white fire siren salamander. You have not yet received a response.

Teo's Orders:

- Send representatives to Lords in Thousand Rivers, Crystal Desert, Vast Swamp, and Turtle Islands

- Throw large dramatic charity events in Thousand Rivers, Crystal Desert, Vast Swamp, and Turtle Islands

- Establish Walking Fortress routes to trading hubs: 2 in Crystal Desert, 2 in Vast Swamp, 1 in Turtles Islands.

- Invest in vast quantities of Essence Crystals for the Matriarch's personal use

- Bulk purchase staples in Thousand Rivers to fill the Walking Fortresses

- Purge Tet loyalists from Sales

- Investigate rival clans in Thousand Rivers, Crystal Desert, Vast Swamp, and Turtle Islands

Decisions:

1. The Teo Investigation?

You resolved to fully investigate the Tet incident, including the possibility that he was framed. He seemed to believe it was a member of the family, but it could have been an outside rival. The evidence still points most firmly at him. Because you have some suspicions about your mother and Teo, you cannot rely on their agents. How do you want to proceed?

[] Individual Efforts

You are not an investigator. At the moment you lack the specialized skills and techniques to divine the truth any better than a mortal. On the other hand, you're very talented and you could devise some treasures to help. You can also trust yourself completely. If you choose this you will also have to spend personal actions to see any progress in the investigation.

[] Outside Help

Hire a private investigator. They will be a specialist with a good reputation. You will need to give them access to sensitive information about your clan and the incident if you want them to make any progress. It's possible, but unlikely, that they could be corrupt. This will cost -$1 income until it's resolved.

[] Recruit your own agents

Look for young, talented, loyal followers in the clan that don't belong to either your mother or Teo. You're starting from zero here, so it will take a bit of time before they're any match for the other intelligence networks in the clan. This is the most sustainable solution but you risk recruiting incompetent operators or double agents.

[] Write in

2. Iron Tribulation?

Q3 is the Iron Tribulation Tournament. An event hosted by Duke Huitzilopochtli for the finest warriors at Perfect or below to show off their skills. It features a number of challenges culminating in a single elimination battle. It is not a battle to the death, but people have died accidently before. It happens every five years. Oku would like to participate as the representative for your clan and she would like time off to focus on cultivation and training. She wishes to reach Perfect before it begins.

[] You need her here

Oku is your honor guard and a rival could strike at any time. If you plan to reforge your core, you will be vulnerable without her. Even if you don't reforge, she is the only member of your clan strong enough to fight beside you.

[] She can have next quarter off

Don't give her time to train but do let her attend. She doubts she'll get far unless she's at Perfect but since you aren't a warrior or noble clan, any success will be impressive and any failure would be excusable.

[] Go with your blessing

She wants to go, so let her. She'll be happy about it and a good showing in the tournament will increase the clan's prestige.

[] Go with your complete support

She has great armor, but what about a new spear? Training aids? A pile of elixirs to clear her mind and let her train without rest? If this wins there will be a follow up vote to determine how much you spend. This will give her the best chance to actually win.

3. The Two Teos?

You haven't met Teo's new clone yet. Part of Chachi doesn't really want to. He has all the memories and abilities of your brother, but he now works with the full knowledge that he will die in one year. Your real brother also shows even greater signs of fatigue, even age. He still has many hundreds of years left in his life, but the elixir took a clear toll on him. What do you want to do?

[] Research how to save the clone

Two Teo's would be a huge asset! It would also make you feel a lot better to not watch your brother, even if he's just a perfect copy, die. Thus far no one has figured out a way to extend the life of an elixir clone, their false core just burns out. But, you are an expert in reforging cores and you are very talented. Perhaps there is a way? The expense will be great and this will commit a personal action slot. You can vote for both this and 'research how to help Teo Prime recover' if you're willing to commit to twice the expense and using all of your free actions.

[] Research how to help Teo Prime recover

There are examples in history of people restoring a damaged core and extending the lifeline of a Perfect cultivator. Most of those examples involved a saint intervening, but that still proves it's theoretically possible. You are an expert in this type of cultivation, you own foundation gives you true immortality so long as you keep reforging your core. You are confident that with enough expense and effort you can repair the damage. The expense will be great and this will commit a personal action slot. You can vote for both this and 'research how to save the clone' if you're willing to commit to twice the expense and using all of your free actions.

[] Leave it alone

Teo made his sacrifice for the good of the clan. You can honor that by focusing your efforts on the clan, as he is.

Personal Actions

You have 5 personal actions a quarter. Currently three are locked by "I can learn." Your brother is monopolizing much of your time. Please note that Decision 3 may commit personal actions.

Locked
[X] Charm Partners
[X] Train Etiquette
[X] Train Intrigue

Self-Improvement

[] Reforge your Core x10

Spend $5 and 10 weeks reforging your core. This will leave you vulnerable this quarter, so duels and other dangerous actions are inadvisable. You cannot pursue other cultivation based actions when you Reforge your core.

[] Acclimate to Diamond Spirit

Perform special meditations to reduce your spiritual corruption and prepare for the next step. This action and simple time spent in Diamond Spirit will reduce the risk of taking Diamond Mind or Diamond Body.

[] Diamond Body

Merge your body with Diamond. The Merging phase is marked by sudden bursts of power and then time spent acclimating. It is possible to ignore the acclimation periods. The faster you push through Transformation the higher your risks. Most people who rush their Merge become mad abominations, but you are an incredible talent. Surely it won't happen to you?

[] Diamond Mind

Merge your mind with Diamond. This has the same risks as Diamond Body.

[] Train a Skill (write in the skill)

Skills names are free-form. The more skilled Chachi is in an area the better she will perform in the narrative. They will add bonuses to relevant actions if I feel the need to roll.

[] Practice the Forge

You have only scratched the surface of the Forge's potential. Spend time gathering Essence and Teotl and then experimenting with what your Mastery technique can do. The 9999 Revelations Meditation will help you come up with new ideas. This will produce useful treasures as a byproduct but also waste resources on failed experiments.

[] Copy with the Forge

Use the Forge to reproduce rare treasures. You will develop your Mastery technique more slowly, but you will produce many useful items. This is one way to prepare for the beast lands.

[] Develop another Mastery Technique (describe what you want, write in the pillar techniques you want to use)

Developing Mastery Techniques is difficult, but the 9999 Revelations Meditations will help keep you on the right track. Mastery Techniques must match thematically with your Foundation and Pillar techniques.

[] Write in

Clan Work

[] Look for New Opportunities

Your father spent much of his time as Patriarch investing in new materials, recipes, and trading partners. Do the same. Will probably get you nothing, but might provide massive benefits.

[X] Charm Partners

Re-affirm existing business relationships. Make gifts, go to meetings, attend parties. Could increase prestige, stability, or even income if you do well.

[] Make Money

The Forge can make a lot of money if you spend the time to man it. This is similar to Copy with the Forge but the Clan is buying the materials and you are mass producing Treasures for sale, not keeping them for yourself.

[] Build Infrastructure

Instead of making things for sale, make things to help the clan grow, like flying armored caravans instead of wagons. This will drain money from your reserves, but should improve your chances of expanding successfully and improve income.

[] Oversight

Personally check up on your employees and solve internal problems. Should increase stability and you might head off crises before they start. Being personally involved in the Tet investigation counts as oversight.

[] Write in

Voting! This is your big schedule vote for the quarter. Just put everything in a plan. Remember you should have Decisions, Orders (all write in, you can also veto or modify Teo's orders), and Actions.

Hmm

[X] plan one step forward
-[X] Outside Help
-[X] Go with your blessing
-[X] Leave it alone
-[X] Acclimate to Diamond Spirit
-[X] Build Infrastructure
-[X] Veto "Teo's investigation about mother's 'charitable' activities."

Outside help because we have a lot on our plate as is and i dont think we should be trying to build our own spy network at the moment.

Go with our blessing because it helps oku, but i dont want us to stand out too much at the tourney. A good showing will improve our prestige and we might get rewards, but becoming a top contender will provoke attention i dont think we are ready to handle. In addition to the fact that i dont want to make oku so powerful we cant handle her if we need to.

Leave it alone. We can write in to help fix his cultivation in the future. For now we need to focus on the stability of the clan.

Acclimate to diamond spirit. We cant afford to completely ignore our own cultivation. Not when multiple family members arent too terribly far away from us in terms of power. Working to acclimate the power we have is best for this imo. Getting body or mind is tok risky at the moment and reforging isnt the best when we are going to be making social rounds. Also would like to get body by the time our deal for the dragons comes around.

Build infrastructure to boost stability and smooth out problems.

All in all the goal is to save on money and work towards acheiving a stable situation. Im sure op will give us ways to spend what he have during this quarter.

-[X] Personal Investment

-[X] Research how to save the clone
-[X] Veto "Teo's investigation about mother's 'charitable' activities."
Personal Investment ensures secrecy and boosts stability, Complete Support boosts prestige (and might have other benefits if there are prizes) and saving the clone is very time sensitive and will pay for itself in having a second Teo, not to mention the long term consequences of being able to make long lived clones, even with the foundation damage. Next quarter we can hopefully swap in Make Money to make up all these expenditures until our new trade deals start turning a profit.

No idea on the Tet bit. I wanted to off the dude to avoid these issues.
[] Go with your blessing
On the tournament, I am more leaning to this. No cost other than loss pf bodyguard
Let us honor the dude's sacrifice and not waste any more time in this still critical juncture of our Clan. Though I fully expect others to disagree here.
[] Acclimate to Diamond Spirit
And since we lose our bodyguard, I wanma try this out. We have no idea how the Cultivation works yet, so picking one where we don't take risk to get an idea seems ideal.

Sounds like you want my plan unless you dont like some other choice i made?
[X] Veto "Teo's investigation about mother's 'charitable' activities."
Ill add this to my plan. So join up if you want..

[X] plan one step forward

I'd personally like a action into getting more money for the clan instead of infrastructure, so that we rebuild the nest egg, but trying to negate the malus is a option too. I feel like this is trying to chip at the problem instead of solving it. It's a viable way to tackle it, just not sure if it's the most optimal way to resolve it.

[X] Veto "Teo's investigation about mother's 'charitable' activities."
[X] Write in - Do not investigate Tet Incident
[X] Go with your blessing
[X] Research how to save the clone
[X] Reforge your Core x10

Tet is so guilty. Bringing in outsiders to investigate doesn't change this, but it does increase the odds of the Empire or someone who wants to blackmail us finding out about Tet's actions.

I'd like to keep the clone as otherwise we're short on loyal managers, it's not easy to find those.

Uuummm... @DangerKitty I mostly agree with your plan but...

[] plan one step forward
-[] Outside Help
-[] Go with your blessing
-[] Leave it alone
-[] Acclimate to Diamond Spirit
-[] Build Infrastructure
-[] Veto "Teo's investigation about mother's 'charitable' activities."

In the first place, it bothers me to ask for outside help that can betray us, to which we have to show confidential files and that is also more expense...
And secondly, I think that for now we have invested enough in Infrastructures and that we need to reinforce stability.

So this would be my plan...

[X] Plan Stability and a bit of Prestige
-[X] Personal Investment
-[X] Go with your blessing
-[X] Leave it alone
-[X] Acclimate to Diamond Spirit
-[X] Oversight (as Teo Investigation)
-[X] Veto "Teo's investigation about mother's 'charitable' activities."

Although it depends on how things evolve, I may vote your plan DangerKitty...
