(As far as it goes, the best part of Dragon Maid is the relationship between Tohru, Kanna, and Kobayahsi, and the worst part was basically anything involving Lucoa... shit, whatever her name is, and the child she molested and acted fucking sketch around in an 'innocent' way that's supposed to be funny but mostly just had me staring at the screen and waiting for the actual funny stuff to happen.

So, not looking forward to the new character, am to the actual meaningful interactions and good jokes separate from her.)

Fafnir was a good side character, but he's the only good dragon side character. Elma is forgettable/boring and Lucoa, oh god, yes, absolutely worst part of the series. Really, instead of introducing yet another dragon, they should first get Elma unboringed.

Yeah, Elma was a bit fun when first introduced, and she wasn't Lucoa, so that made me remember her more positively in distant hindsight, since it's been years since I've watched it.

From memory, some of the other author's work has involved a certain genre...

Which should be obvious seeing as the boy's name is "Shouta" and she uses the honorific "Kun" with him..
 
There are authors/creators who seem to have hit upon something wonderful by accident. When I think about the Lucoa/Shouts stuff and what I've heard about Ilulu, it makes me wonder if that was the case with Dragon Maid.

On a related note, I'm dreading the effect Ilulu will have on ao3. The Dragon Maid fandom tag is already one that generates a lot of fetish fics, including a lot of weird infant stuff. I expect Ilulu to cause even more of an imbalance against wholesome lesbian/found family fics.
 
The weird thing for me is I actually like Ilulu and Lucoa, but only in the spinoffs. Specifically the Kanna spinoff, and what I've read of the Elma spinoff.

Ignoring Ilulu's body shape (which is less ridiculous in at least the Kanna spinoff, ie "large breasts" rather than "bigger than her head"), there's actually a decent character arc in there, with her getting to be the Slightly Older Sister to Kanna and Saikawa when they play together, while also being Young Girl Possibly With A Crush when it comes to her human friend. And Lucoa actually has some fairly good bits of wisdom to impart regarding living together with humans, and accepting all the irrational bits that come with it.

But in the "main series", Lucoa is one-note tiresome, and I don't even know how Ilulu was approved as a character.
 
I'm going to stick with the manga and anime. So thank you but no thank you.

Basically, the person adapting the script for dubbing was fully aware that "But I'm a woman" is a clichéd phrase in Japanese yuri media to set up relationships and -- from another perspective -- to highlight the "absurdity" of same-sex romance, being used to enforce heteronormativity by making a woman hitting on another woman appear odd or weird. Kobayashi responding in such a bashful (and honestly kinda ignorant way, as if she particularly cared about what society thinks) could retrospectively feel out of character. Instead, she chose to use a phrase that made Kobayashi appear more decisive (which felt more in-character for Kobayashi) and also matched the number of syllables needed to match the lip flaps.

(Side note: the person who adapted that line also adapted the script for one of the most yuri series ever dubbed for North America, so accusing her of having a "straightwashing" agenda is a bit ridiculous)

So yes, there was a reason. An even very decent one, when you look at it from just a slightly different angle. Nevermind that the original work is sometimes also quite terrible about its issues -- hello, incredibly inappropriate behaviour towards a minor and putting dicks on people without their consent.

There's a lot of stuff to criticize the dubbing staff for, but claiming "hey it was done for no reason" isn't accurate. There was a reason, and it wasn't just "straightwashing". It also feels a bit absurd to accuse the dubbing staff of not liking the product they were working on. Making mistakes or errors of judgment does not equal dislike.

To follow up a bit on this, a friend-of-a-friend also addressed the complaints with the dub. She's a translator as well, though she didn't work on Dragon Maid, but she breaks down the translations in question and gives her thoughts on the choices made. The tl;dr is that the 'patriarchy' line is just kind of an awkward joke in the dub and the original Japanese, but that leaves 99.98% of the dub as being really good.

"It's one bad joke, not the final season of Game of Thrones."

She goes very in-depth, so the whole thing is worth the watch if you want some nuts 'n bolts detail.

Good point. I didn't mind the Dragon Maid dub, although that line was kinda cringe. Didn't ruin the whole. thing for me though.

Jamie Marchi as a whole did a good job on Lucoa as well(liked her as Masane too from Witchblade. And she fitted Panty like a GLOVE), even if, well, I'm not a fan of the stuff surrounding her.

New season is here, very well done adaptations of the maid cafe (although a missed opportunity of putting Fafnir's review of the maid cafe) and Ilulu's introductory chapters in this episode, specially the fight.

Even Ilulu's meeting with Kobayashi is improved over the source material.

Lucoa basically has no self awareness when it comes to her behavior towards Shouta.

Of course, that is not real excuse.
 
Lucoa and Shouta are basically the worst parts of the show and the most obvious place where the author's fetishes are in the story.

I'm not joking. The author has a bunch of shotacon hentai works. If only this was written by literally anyone else.

I think it's best to remember there is an official spinoff manga focused solely on Lucoa and Shouta where they "joke" about how Shouta is ten and how Lucoa enjoys the taboo around the whole thing, AIUI.

It's not because Lucoa isn't aware of what she's doing, and it's not because she doesn't realise it's inappropriate. It is, unfortunately, exactly what you think it is.
