Miracles of Ancient Wonder [RWBY/Exalted]

The black wood crackled and burned where Yang's knuckles connected. A web of fire spread through the valleys of the bark. A wave of force pulsed through the surface, making the bark ripple outward. At the same time, it twisted, tearing at the tree's flesh. The tree exploded into hundreds of splinters, bright fragments turning into an incendiary whirlwind.
This sounds like Theion's version of Wrath Stoked Bonfire Soul.
It seemed like a custom solar hero style expansion, she used what seems like a stunted Sledgehammer Fist Punch to kick up the dirt earlier in the fight so she may have some solar MA charms.
To me, the passage you're discussing read as Kingdom of the Blind, another Theion Charm. This would not only make Yang an Infernal, but also mean Theion was around when the Infernal Exaltations were first corrupted.
As for Blake... Thats not a Solar, Abyssal, Lunar or DB-themed dodge.
This may be me, but it sounds a lot like a TAW dodge. Would need to look to be sure.

I... both really liked that fight sequence and am still confused by it. Some rereading is gonna be necessary for me. I love your subtleties, Graveless.

I think I agree with ChaoticSky's current theory, though I must say I'll intrigued if this ends up being the case: Solar Yang, Infernal Blake and Lunar Weiss.

Meanwhile, it seems Ruby has determined to protect her team. Truly, she is the best girl.

Edit: I was looking at forms of perfect defense and I feel like an Abyssal Blake is vaguely possible - she could possibly be using Flickering Wisp Technique. Although again, I'm still a newbie for most Exalted things.

Ill be honest, i found a concept of Theion interesting as hell, but i kinda missed the bandwagon on it... took a crazy amount of digging to even find out who Theion was, and i never saw any charms for him.
The book Shards of the Exalted Dream details possible alternate settings instead of Creation to play games of Exalted in. Theion, and the 26 Charms they wrote for him separate from his imports from the Malfeas Charmset, are detailed in Gunstar Autochthonia. And also here.

Awwww, I had been amusing myself with willfully disbelieving that anybody other than Ruby was an Exalt. Now that this chapter's so heavily debunked that though, I am forced to shift my headcanon so that the other hilarious option, that all of team RUBY are exalts, is true.

Before long, it'll be be revealed that Ozpin is heretic, that Glynda is a Lunar, that all the staff are anathemas of some kind, and then finally that everyone in Remnant is an exalt and that they are all hiding from each other thinking "thank goodness it wasn't me" every time one of them is discovered. :V

disagree, "step between moments" is thematically fine for Lunars and solars. solar as a "just that fast. so fast i break plank time." Lunars as "I go outside. outside boundaries, outside reality, outside the notmal progression of time."

Ah, right. See? I'm even mixing the names up. Never paid much attention to Theion though so the post still applies... but i was thinking of the inverse-Malfeas rather than the unbroken Malfeas. The one where they killed Liger and not the other Fetich Soul, there was a discussion about it on the old forums. Got my brain really interested, but nothing came of it. Someone asked what would have happened if the Solars killed Ligier instead of Revullia; One of the devs replied something to the effect of "Ligier represents Theion's pride as a king, while Revullia represented his grace as a king. Killing Revullia caused him to become a ugly tyrant, if they had killed Ligier (s)he(?) would have become a infinitely cavorting madman without ambition or shame, dancing through the void with the other Primordials trapped in his orbit, rather than the Malfeas we know'

Or something like that, its been a really long time. There was alot of interest in developing Charms and stuff for that alternate-Malfeas, but i didnt think anything actually came of it.

Possibly, but thats a extremely oblique way of looking at it. In terms of general themes, Solar charms are about doing something insanely skillfully. Case in point, the normal solar dodge Seven Shadow Evasion is just the solar being so mindboggingly good at DODGE!!! that you just flat out cannot hit them, even if your attack was some kind of magical-impossible-to-avoid attack, because they are just that good at dodging. Stepping between moments or asserting authority on the world are much more esoteric effects and not really how Solar charms usually work. If she was using a Solar dodge she would have simply stepped aside and been all; "blondie plz"

Lunar charms can get more weird, but they are almost always based in the Lunar's physical form, either through superlative attributes (simply being so fast that you cannot hit them, as opposed to being good at dodging) or due to using their mercurial nature to effect a defence. In the case of exalted canon, the Lunar dodge is Flowing Body Evasion, where its flat out impossible to hit them because their flesh flows around a would-be attack, allowing it to pass through them without actually hitting anything. Which might sound similar in effect to what happened, remember we are seeing this from Blake's POV and from the way shes describing it, it doesnt seem to be the method she used.

Conversely flash-porting type dodges 'between moments' are very much how a Sid Dodge charm might work from a thematic standpoint. So its possible that is what she did, though A) we know Ruby is a Siddie already, and B) the canon Sid Dodge Avoidance Kata would have been WAY more useful in her situation than what she did, so im inclined to think that if she was infact a Sidereal she would have tossed the whole encounter and stayed at home. For the uninitiated; Avoidance Kata basically allows a Sid to go:
*looks around*
*looks at watch*
You know what? Fuck all y'all and this whole situation. The last few minutes? I was never here.
I never argued with yang, i didnt even jump the cliff.
Byyyyeee!
*R̸̶é̶͜c͟or̸d̡ ̸͞S̶c̢r̀a͢t͡ch͡!̡͡*
*blake looked up at her happyspot on the cliff, then sighed and turned around and when home.*
Yang can wait up there all damn night if she wants to! *typical cat grumbles*
(Behold, a small taste of the bullshit that is Sidereals )
So yea, if she could do that, I'm inclined to think she would have.

Finally, Infernals are a total mixed bag since each Yozi has its own internally consistent theme, rather than Infernals having one as a whole. What she did however is almost word for word Who Strikes The Wind? the Adorjani dodge charm. She even satisfies the Imperfection Of the Silent Wind to use it (if you look back, she actually pushes off the tree, moving forward, before activating the ability. Adorjan's Imperfection means that you have to move to use Perfect Defences). Finally, as someone pointed out over on SB; Blake is running from her problems, and that is Adorjani as you can get.

I mean, I could be wrong, I was wrong about Yang being a DB clearly. But this is my best guess and i think its the best one i can make until the Author gives us more glorious details.

There's a reason I said it sounded a lot like a Charm a Terrifying Argent Witch would have. From the outside, it even sounds like it would look similar to using their premade perfect dodge and it's prerequisite at the same time, with how she ended up moving behind Yang in the process, but her narration sounds more like she was using one of their swiftness Charms than a dodge.

Flat out, all of them except Ruby are being just plain weird.

That they are.

And this:

Is a big part of it.

How their abilities feel internally and appear externally is going to be quite weird for a while. All of them have been using things that aren't too obvious, or over the top, even if it would've solved the immediate issue more quickly.

Botched her Perception checks and caught exactly none of the subtext. ;X

Oh she caught part of it, the main question is... Which parts of the various currents of subtext?

Clearly she figured out that all three of her teammates are Anathema and now she's planning to murder them on the extra-credit trip so that it will look like an accident.

Why else would she be so happy?

Hyper-Competent Anathema-Hunter Ruby? ...When put into that specific wording, I could buy it. She's basically naive and adorable right up until the Hunt starts... Ruby in Yharnam when? Pfft, and people say you need to Dream to be a hyper-murder-happy hunter.

Kinda like... Wyld Hunter Ruby? Because that is something Siddies do too. XD

Aaaand now I'm thinking of an even more horrifying and depressing interpretation. I would write an omake, but I don't have enough time to actually do so right now (also I don't think I could handle all the tragedy and angst).

Instead, here's an outline of what said omake might have looked like:
  1. Ruby only figures out that Weiss or Blake is an Anathema, not Yang or the other teammate (or herself for that matter).
  2. _WBY have all figured out that everyone on their team is an Anathema.
  3. Ruby comes to Yang with this realization.
  4. "Let's kill it," she says to Yang.
  5. Yes, in those exact words.
  6. Cue Yang's heart being torn to shreds.
  7. Yang agrees to Ruby's plan, seeing no way out of this and prioritizing her relationship with her sister over the life of her friend.
  8. [Self-loathing intensifies]
  9. Ruby and Yang go through with it, killing either Weiss or Blake, though I don't know which I'd go with since both have 'benefits':
    • Killing Blake might help generate even more despair in Yang, since she's her partner and (presumably) closer with her than she is with Weiss. Bonus-tears if they were a bonded Solar/Lunar pair.
    • Killing Weiss opens up the possibility of Blake returning to the White Fang when she finds out, embracing their doctrine of hatred and violence after having the last little bit of her faith in humanity utterly shattered.
  10. Team RWBY is so irreparably broken that it makes the end of Volume 3 look like RWBY Chibi in comparison.
So... yeah. Here's hoping things don't turn out like that.

10. The rest of the Beacon teaching staff figure out the entirety of the team were Anathema and purge them all right after the fight.

That seems more thematically appropriate for the series of events you posit. ;P

Actually, yeah, you're right. The futility of it all would totally spit in the face of Yang's sacrifice/betrayal for the sake of living a life with a sister that loves her. But I wouldn't have them all killed immediately after.

In this situation, I think it would be better to go with Weiss being the one Ruby and Yang murder. Blake would find out shortly after, maybe even witnessing the final moment, then she'd do her thing and run away. She'd safely escape, but she'd return to the White Fang and do her best to wipe out humanity or those guys want to do.

Then the staff would arrive. There would have to be a little bit of time before they're both killed though, but not much. Just enough for her to realize that everything she did was in vain. That she had murdered a friend for nothing. That she had crushed what little remained of her partner's hope for a better future. That she will never get to live that life with her sister, because they would both be dead soon.

...but I doubt any of this will happen, because who the fuck wants to read about depressing shit like that? :p

Anyway, sorry for clogging the thread up with this. My first post on the topic was just a little joke, but then the line from the .gif, "Let's kill it," got me thinking about what would happen if I ran with it.
