Zrazta pulled the door open as she led the way inside. I followed her and looked around, the inside dark and somewhat grimy. It seemed old and only somewhat cared for. Even so, there were quite a few people inside, spread out among the tables.
Zrazta glanced back at me, one eyebrow raised.
I frowned and nodded towards one of the tables by the corner. She nodded and headed over there and I followed along to sit down by the wall. She took the other wall to give her a view of the door since I sat where I could easily see the inside of the bar.
One of the men by the bar took downed a shot of an amber liquid and then breathed out a small flash of fire. Shaking his head, he put the glass back down and picked up his hat before leaving through the rear exit.
"What was that?" Zrazta asked quietly.
I shook my head, "No idea, "I answered, "Not normal."
Especially not on fucking Earth! What's in that shit!? We simply sat there and watched as people came and left through both the front and rear doors, but mostly from the rear.
The old barkeep made his way over to our table, his hair thinning and he was mostly bald, walking with a limp, "What can I get you?"
"Nothing right now," I answered and shook my head, "Just resting our feet for a bit. Long day, you know?"
He blinked at me and then nodded, "Interesting accent you got there."
"We're not from around here, "Zrazta said with a smile, "Just stopping by."
The barkeep nodded, "Let me know if you need anything," and with that, he returned towards the bar.
I drummed my fingers on the table.
Something really screwy was going on here and quite clearly it was big. This was not a point of invasion. These people acted like this was normal. The strange way they dressed, the strange styles, the strange drinks…
This was wrong.
There was no way an entire society of magic could hide in plain sight on Earth, was there? No, not unless there was some kind of massive men in black style conspiracy. Even then it shouldn't be possible.
Alexis, what did you get mixed up in?
"We should check what's out back," Zrazta said and looked over at the rear exit, "A lot of people leave or come through there."
I slowly nodded, "Wait for next group. We follow them through. Be ready for anything."
Zrazta nodded and shot me a quick smile.
We didn't need to wait for long. Soon enough a family came through the outer door. Mother, Father, two children, both boys. The older one looked to be in his mid teens. The next one was younger. Looked to be Ten or Eleven.
" Should we go now?" I asked, glancing at Zrazta as they stopped to exchange a couple of words with the barkeep before moving towards the exit.
She nodded, "Now."
Gathering out bags, we headed after them casually. I stretched on the way, rubbing the back of my neck before slipping my arm around Zraztas waist.
After exiting the bar, a back alley was revealed, blocked off from all directions with brick walls. The family was by the north side, the older male tapping a wooden stick on the bricks and suddenly they just… shifted. The bricks moved with a soft grinding sound, folding and shifting into themselves in almost impossible ways.
They formed an archway, revealing a street, a street lined with shops, filled with people. People dressed just as strange as or stranger than everyone in the bar.
Some had robes on. Literal robes.
I tried not to gape as we walked through the portal, the bricks shifting to close behind us. Alien worlds, different planes… I would have not been surprised of this. But this was Earth. How in the FUCK did they hide this!?
Was there some kind of strange SEP field in effect? How in the world!?
Zrazta took my hand and pulled me over to the side before she frowned up at me, "What's wrong?"
"I don't understand," I said softly, "This is… this is impossible". "How… I don't get it."
Nodding, she turned around and put her back against the wall, putting my hands on her hips and then pulled me close, "You'll get us caught," she said softly, "Atregos, focus."
Closing my eyes, I rested my forehead against hers, taking a slow and deep breath. Okay. Okay. She was right.
Getting noticed would be bad. She was right.
It was no different than arriving on a brand-new world. New Customs, Observe, Adapt, Blend in. Figure everything out and gather information and knowledge. See how it would benefit the Azure Consortium.
"Same as what we always do". Just need to track down Alexis as well.
Okay then.
Nodding, I stole a quick kiss, "Thanks."
She winked at me, "So what do we do now?"
"Now, we follow the alley," I answered and pulled back, taking her hand, "See where it takes us. Ears and eyes open."
