For A Better World 159
[X] He should be the one to decide.

"He should be the one to decide."

He looks sheepish, glancing to Fincher.

BRINDLE: "Well... this is going to be a bit awkward either way. But maybe the best solution is that the magistrate came here to recruit me?"

FINCHER: "Yeah? Recruit you for what?"

BRINDLE: "Well, she's without her legally required scribe, and I can write high realm."

SAGACITY: High realm is the formal writing system of the Realm. The vast majority of people, including the legion, use the simpler low realm for everyday use, but a magistrate's reports to the deliberative would be better in high realm.

FINCHER: "She has a legally required scribe? Since when?"

BRINDLE: "I could have mentioned it at some time previously and the magistrate came here to explain to the talonlord about her requirements. We are currently in negotiation for my recruitment."

EMBASSY: That's actually pretty good. That could work.

PRESENCE: Mei is still going to be annoyed we went over her head.

Still, it's a place to start.

"Alright. I felt I owed it to you to clear it with you first, Fincher, and to ask Brindle directly. Now the thing to do would be to clear it with Mei. I'll be talking to her later."

FINCHER: "You're talking to her?"

"Yeah, I talk to people sometimes."

FINCHER: "And you think she's going to listen? Last I heard she was still trying to kill you."

"Nah, we're over that. We're buddies now."

Fincher blinks.

FINCHER: "That's weird, boss."

PRESENCE: It is a bit, isn't it?

"I don't know, maybe me being injured in your out of control shenanigans forced her to examine her true feelings for me."

INTEGRITY: That's almost definitely not it.

FINCHER: "My out of control shenanigans, right. And you'd be okay with him staying with you after everything we just learned?"

"Yeah, I think we're good. Are we good, Brindle?"

BRINDLE: "Y- uh, yes, I think so."

FINCHER: "Well, if you're sure."

"Okay, good. Well, I think we've talked for about as long as the recruitment conversation could have gone."

[ ] We should do a group hug first.
[ ] We should catch up later, Fincher, I missed you.
[ ] Bye for now.
[ ] (Get up and leave without further comment.)

[X] We should do a group hug first.

A sorrowful and meaningless protest, but I take part nonetheless.

my greatest apologies to all group hug partisans. truly, i have lost my way. i shall meditate on the mysteries of the omni-hug to return to the path of righteousness as swiftly as i am able.

[X] We should catch up later, Fincher, I missed you.

"We should catch up later, Fincher, I missed you."

She grins at that.

FINCHER: "Well, I guess I missed you too, boss. It's been pretty boring out here, and you're always kind of entertaining."

Brindle clears his throat and looks away.

"Mei said she had you growing food."

She stands, stretches and yawns.

FINCHER: "Yeah, beans and grains, mostly. Staple foods to fill out the stores. Some fresh fruits for nutrition, and a few medicine herbs."

"That's a really useful skill to have."

FINCHER: "Sure is tiring. Even growing those few trees you saw took a lot out of me, and the dragonlord wants a whole lot more than that. My talon are all busy digging them up, too, which is miserable work. I didn't join up to be a farmer."

"What did you join up for?"

She shrugs.

FINCHER: "I'd be a terrible monk. Hey, you want me to take a look at those arms?"

"Iris already bound them up."

FINCHER: "Iris is great, but she doesn't have my special touch. Here."

She leans over and puts a hand on your bandaged right shoulder.

[ ] Pull away from her.
[ ] Let her do whatever she's doing.
[ ] Put your left hand on her shoulder in response.

None are perfect. All have acted in folly.
To do our best is to act thoughtfully from a place of compassion and the hope of shared joy.

You never lost your path, just got a bit distracted by something shiny that looked like it might be cool. And it was cool! And I'm glad you picked what you wanted to pick.

For whatever it is worth, I think your choice met all criteria for whatever righteousness (probably) is.

I'm not drunk! You're drunk!...Ok. Maybe I'm a bit drunk.

There will be chances of hugs in the future, maybe we will take them, maybe we won't. But I'm confident we'll all have a good time either way ;D

[X] Let her do whatever she's doing.

You sit and stare ahead as Fincher pulls back your blanket and prods at your shoulder. You feel a bone-deep tingling sensation.

"What are you doing?"

FINCHER: "Just give me a minute."

She takes your left hand and lays her palm over your forearm. You feel an odd clicking sensation and the flesh of your bandaged arm perceptibly shifts.

FINCHER: "There! You got about a minute until your entire body explodes. My revenge is complete."

"What?"

FINCHER: "Heh, got you. No, I just fixed up your bones a bit. Should be done healing within a day or so."

"Really?"

FINCHER: "Yeah. It just sets the bones proper and helps along natural healing. Works better on Exalts."

"Wow, thanks Fincher, that's a really useful trick."

FINCHER: "Eh, don't worry about it. I got this one broken in the first place. You'd better get going. I'll keep an eye on the kid until you see the dragonlord about the whole scribe thing, right?"

You pull the blanket back around your shoulders and stand.

"Right, okay."

FINCHER: "And maybe put some more clothes on? It's cold out."

"I've got bandages on."

FINCHER: "Yeah boss, everyone can see your bandages."

BRINDLE: "We'll talk later, okay?"

FIncher turns on him.

FINCHER: "Alright you, back to work! If you're in my talon you're still picking long beans, weird memory shit or no."

BRINDLE: "Uh, yes talon! Right away."

He hurries off. Fincher waits until he's out of earshot before speaking up again.

FINCHER: "I don't know how I feel about this, boss, but if anyone comes asking I didn't know nothing."

"Alright, understood."

FINCHER: "Oh, one more thing. Toothsome was out looking for you? Not sure what that's about."

"Yeah, I heard. Later, Fincher."

FINCHER: "Yeah, we'll see about that catching up when we can both get a break."

She kicks dirt over the remains of the fire.

FINCHER: "Back to work for me."

You head back in the direction of the camp. Smoke still lingers in the woods, making visibility difficult even in the gloomy light of the late afernoon.

Lily approaches, apparently having been waiting a respectful distance away during your conversation.

"Hey Lily."

LILY: "Hey. Did you kill anyone?"

"No."

LILY: "Did you get poisoned?"

"Not that I noticed."

LILY: "Are you still hallucinating?"

"I wasn't hallucinating, I was delerious. And no."

LILY: "Okay, good, good. Just trying to keep track."

"Thanks for the blanket, by the way."

LILY: "No problem. Where are you headed now?"

WAR: The dragonlord is probably still at the funeral.

SAGACITY: We still need to talk to the sorcerer about stuff.

CRAFT: Rooster still has some of our stuff.

EMBASSY: We have a new tent, we should probably check that out.

PHYSIQUE: Okay, the swim was good, but what if we went to the training yard?

[ ] I want to go to the funeral.
[ ] I want to visit the sorcerer.
[ ] I want to see what Rooster's doing.
[ ] I want to see my new tent.
[ ] I want to work out at the training yard.
[ ] I don't know, what do you want to do?
