Character Sheet
Maid to Love You
A Clockwork Romance

Miss Jane Eleanor Polestar
The player character. An 18 (nearly 19!) year old woman, next in line to the County of Polaris, wandering the galaxy in search of love aboard MSY Mercury. You vote on her actions, but her perspective here is limited.

Mark Butler
Miss Polestar's robotic butler, and head of the servant staff. He is tasked primarily with management, but also acts as valet to any male visitors.

Marie Lady's Maid
The viewpoint character. A newly activated robotic servant who acts as Miss Polestar's lady's maid. Though witty and sharp, some quirk of her construction has intensified both her physical and emotional sensitivity. Is inexplicably French.

Pierre Chef
Miss Polestar's robotic cook, responsible for the kitchen and larder. He is noted to have loose association with many lovers in many ports.

Tom Mechanic
Miss Polestar's robotic handyman, who also helps to maintain the other machines.

Tessa Mechanic
Miss Polestar's robotic handywoman, who is hired later in the story. She has greatly modified her own body, and has a complicated history.

Hans Messenger
Miss Polestar's robotic messenger, who manages the mail, prints newspapers, delivers messages, and manages the property of guests. Is inexplicably German.

Amber Housemaid
Miss Polestar's robotic housemaid, who keeps MSY Mercury clean and tidy. Noted to have two large, orange headlamp eyes. Is inexplicably American.

Polly Kitchen Maid
Miss Polestar's robotic kitchen maid, who assists Pierre in making food. Also the head of the serving staff's union, a position she does not take very seriously.

Content Warning
This quest is an erotic romance. There will be sexual content, and it will not be separated from the main text or spoiler tagged. You have been warned.

Right, useful comments for the writers? Okay:

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :3

[X] A competitor eliminated early from the tournament comes and sits near you, and you can't help but ask for some tips for your own swordplay. Next thing you know, you and Marie are getting an impromptu lesson from one of the best amateur swordswomen in the Concert!
[X] You got lost in the museum, and ended up in a storeroom packed with rather strange artifacts. You aren't sure if you're supposed to be here.

[X] Mark, who is quite stern, but you've known him since before you can remember. He's always been rather indulgent with you.

[X] Old Tom, who you know almost nothing about despite the fact he's worked for your family since forever. He's just quietly competent and everpresent.

Ooh, this going surprisingly well! Go Amber! She's had a very interesting life.

Hm. All the hiccups sound good to me, so I'll just vote for the chaperone.

I think Amber would be the best one. Having a man chaperone two ladies seems a little unseemly to me. Besides, Amber has shepherded enough humans through enough relationships that I suspect she'll handle most complications that could come up.

Although... She might expect Mary to do more than she finds comfortable. Hm...

[X] Amber has volunteered, but you aren't sure you entirely trust her with this. She was a bit too mirthful at the premise, and you're worried she won't take it seriously.

[X] There's a machine in the tournament, how curious! Marie very much wants to meet her after a match, and to be honest so do you. What's she like, what is it like to stand out from the crowd so much, and how did get there?

[X] … what's Lieutenant Risewell doing here?

[X] You never expected to run into one of your old school friends here, but you run into a first-year student doing studies in the university and sure enough, she's very familiar! You should catch up!

Amber is delightful, and I think very good as an ally. But she misreads Marie- who *feels* much and much more strongly than a machine should, perhaps watching the two will lead her to see the truth. She does seem very perceptive, after all, and I think she might be able to help Marie with the machine perspective she seems to be desperately groping for.

@catlover2011 Are youu voted for the same thing 3 times?

[X] You met a rather odd individual, speaking about his rather odd religious beliefs. Nothing harmful, just a little strange. Marie seems to find him a bit unsettling, though.

"Of course, this does mean I've seen more or less every sort of drama the humans can throw at us before." she said, clearly a little smug. "So if you ever need some friendly advice, especially when we find a nice girl for Miss Polestar, my ears are always open. Humans can have a bit of trouble moving on, after all."

… ah.

So, we've got a bit of the same stuff that's coming up in the other story in this setting - Humans and Machines can have a dalliance but not a real relationship, and obviously Marie is expected to just stop feeling things when Jane moves on. Amber does not even really consider the option that Marie might be the one who's struggling that way.

Huh, machines are more accepting than I expected, though Amber's apparent dismissal of machine-human relationships is concerning. I know Tessa's had sex with humans in the past, but I wonder if she's similarly dismissive of more permanent, romantic relationships between machines and humans?

It's hard to choose just 2 hiccups - they're all really interesting and dramatic! I think on balance I'd like to go with:

[X] A competitor eliminated early from the tournament comes and sits near you, and you can't help but ask for some tips for your own swordplay. Next thing you know, you and Marie are getting an impromptu lesson from one of the best amateur swordswomen in the Concert!

We must learn more about stabbing and aliens.

[X] Old Tom, who you know almost nothing about despite the fact he's worked for your family since forever. He's just quietly competent and everpresent.

I'd like to know more about Old Tom. Seems like he might have an interesting perspective on things, if he's so old.

Swordplay good! Swordplay more!

Getting mentored together good, worldbuilding good, and finally Amber is just fun to watch.

Amber would probably be the best witness and hopefully future advocate as things develop (and she's pretty fun)

… ah.

About what I expected. I don't honestly think this is the first time a machine and a human decided to have a serious relationship, but most of them seem to think that it has a clear expiration date... so we'll show them, we'll show them all!

Amber is probably the best option overall, in that she will indulgently permit Jane and Marie to "get it out of their system", but. But.

[X] Hans, who is very new and has no idea what is going on, but who reacted to being asked with a grim determination. He will no doubt take it very seriously.

The siren song of b a d d e c i s i o n s.

We will corrupt him.

I really liked this update. Hans being dense was far funnier than I anticipated.

Hang on, are lady's maids all named some variation of Mary after Maid Marian?

Edit to clarify: just from a nomenclature perspective, the character was, as I recall, very much not that.

Nah, they are all Maria's because the early servants got Biblical names. The early factory machines are Adam and Eve. Lady's maids are Mary, valets are James, butlers are Mark and Matthew, messengers are John, cooks are Peter, and construction workers Luke. Eventually though this fell out of favour and machines started getting other names (not the least due to the fairly small amount of women in the New Testament vs how many feminine machines were needed for 'feminine' jobs), but the cluster of early machines in factories and households are named accordingly.

So what you're saying is that there are carpenter machines walking around with their names being variations on "Jesus".
