The two samurai, one now a drifter, the other now an agent of the Sword Queen, stared at each other from either side of the town square, not moving an inch but with their hands tentatively by their weapons. Even without an announcer, almost all the townsfolk had showed up to watch this,
the final match of the Festival Tournament.
Garasha then softly chuckled to herself "Sachiko, I urge you not to think of this as a matter of winning or losing," she said, then lunged forth with her assortment of weapons, fangs bared and eyes red "Just as a matter of how long you can last!".
The fox girl then sprung back, flipped over and tossed her iron fan like a boomerang at Garasha. Unsuccessful at knocking at knocking the gun out of one of her hands, Sachiko just landed on a nearby roof and replied. "You're right Garasha, it's not about winning, it's about having fun. And I'm gonna have the most fun beating you into a pulp!".
Garasha then attached her spear and naginata together with webbing, then used them as a makeshift whip to lasso Sachiko down from up high. Though the fox girl swiftly dodged, Garasha was able to use her web-whip to swing herself up to that same roof.
Sachiko proceeded to start bounding from roof to roof, knocking the snow on each down in an attempt to trip up her foe. Yet with a series of high-flying somersaults Garasha's pursuit wasn't slowed in the least, so Sachiko had to promptly start casting fireballs at her, not an easy thing to do when leaping over rooftops.
It wasn't long until Sachiko ran out of roofs when she landed on a large, pagoda-like storage house. As Garasha swung up right next to her, she made the choice to tap on a close-by frost mark with her sickle, which made it instantly dissolve as spidery poison seeped into it.
"Grrr, you don't scare me!" Sachiko shouted as she ran at Garasha. The Shinsengumi easily blocked, only to see what she'd blocked was but an illusive clone, as the real Sachiko brought down a jump kick to her head, nearly sending Garasha falling all the way down.
Garasha undaunted started shuffling along the edge of this roof, too fast for Sachiko to stamp on her hands. The ronin responded by simply sending a lightning bolt crackling along the ledge, to which Garasha, seeing Sachiko above her, instead dropped down to a railing below.
Waiting there a while, Garasha looked up only to see Sachiko nowhere. Quickly putting together what Sachiko was likely trying Garasha swiftly swung to her side, as Sachiko then slashed out with her fan from the inside the window where the Shinsengumi was seconds before.
Garasha swung back again and kicked Sachiko into the building. where the fox warrior's landing was softened as she was caught on one of the giant floats, prepared for the Festival. Sachiko hurriedly scrambled up the towering parade float, managing to make it to the top before Garasha spotted her.
"Sakkakuhime!" she transformed back into her star-adorned armour as she dived down upon Garasha, creating the illusion of a dragon to ride on. As Sachiko's dragon lunged right at Garasha and then flew back outside, the fox girl whooped and cheered as she flew above the crowd, shouting out loud "I did it! Victory is mine!".
Unfortunately, Sachiko had not spotted that Garasha was still clinging to one of this dragon's legs, making the ronin gasp and turn pale when she suddenly heard a voice shot out "Tokisasaru!".
Garasha then flipped up right in front of Sachiko, swung her blades and 'stuck' Sachiko in time. With Sachiko incapable of moving, she could only watch as Garasha delivered innumerable slashes onto her. The moment the time-stop wore off, Sachiko was helplessly rocketed sky-high from all those attacks at once, the Shinsengumi could only grin and say "I think not".

"Kamiya Garasha, we see the Shinsengumi definitely don't disappoint! As Winner of Kanaoka's Festival Tournament, please accept this trophy, a replica crescent moon in the image of the New Moon Dragon's emblem!" the town mayor said aloud, as Garasha bowed and accepted her prize in front of an ecstatic audience.
"And to Sachiko Baishou, in Second Place..." the mayor then turned to the kitsune "We present six coins, in the image of the Crimson Centurion's crest!". Sachiko sighed, bowed then took the coins, noticing the crowd's cheers were not at the volume they'd been for Garasha.
"Hey, Vivi" she then turned around to the journalist "You're still cool with interviewing the runner-up, aren't ya? Second comes right after first, huh?".
"Actually, I did have in mind-" Vivi began, then grumbled as she saw Sachiko's face droop down. "
Fine, I'll interview the runner-up, I mean Garasha will probably just be cryptic at me anyway".
"With the combat over, may the parade begin!" the mayor called out, firing a blank into the air. Sure enough, the Kanaoka parade didn't disappoint, as pipers and drummers marched in time down the streets, tower-like floats depicting gods, heroes and monsters being carried on large wooden beams after them, a fox-shaped indent still being noticeable in one of them. Even though it was well into the night, the whole town shone from the lanterns within the floats, and the intricate patterns made by fireworks exploding high above.
Once the parade had ended, and Sachiko had sampled every food stall set up (Vivi had been too in awe of the massive floats to eat, though soon settled for some tuna), the ronin and reporter went to a convenient tavern for the night. While the prize money from the tournament had been generous, it was still nowhere near enough to go to that high-quality inn they'd seen before.
The log-built tavern could at least be described as cozy enough, with a suitably blazing fireplace that helped keep away most of the cold, and many bandaged fighters far less lucky in the Tournament drinking to forget their laughable defeats. Though it was hard not to pick up that, among a group of Oni, one seat had been noticeably left vacant.
Then something else caught Vivi's eye. "Huh, what's it?" she said, pointing to a glowing kanji rune at one end of the tavern.
"Ah, that's an amplification charm, like the one that announcer had!" Sachiko explained. "This one here's though for singing, since that's a popular group pastime here in Himikoku. C'mon, don't be shy, step up!" she then giggled and urged Vivi.
A red-in-the-face Vivi tried to expand her lungs, though had difficulty going any higher than a murmur. "Er, here, maybe this could help" Sachiko said as she offered to sake to Vivi.
A few drinks later, Vivi was twirling and dancing on top of singing an old Viking folk tune, or at least the garbled remains of one. Sachiko smiled and said "See, now you're getting into it!" before she joined in, the ronin's own voice-

Things weren't helped as what she was singing certainly wasn't in tune with Vivi, not that Vivi was in tune with anything right now.
"Mind if join in?" Sachiko's old opponent Tomoyo Sensoukami smiled and approached them, though rather than singing the drummer accompanied them on percussion. "I'm heading back down to Taiko Island tomorrow, so it'd be good for me to get some practice in".
Then just outside the frosted window, Sachiko spotted another familiar face. "Hey Garasha! Where ya going, get up here!" she grinned and pulled the Shinsengumi all the way onstage. "If I can't beat you in battle, I can least win at singing!".
"Sachiko, this is hardly befitting one of my station. Besides, I hardly have the time-" Garasha tried to shake her off, but as she saw Sachiko's pleading face then said "Oh, if you insist".
With Garasha' smoky contralto complimenting Sachiko's er, 'vibrant' soprano and Vivi's unpolished mezzo-soprano, the three of them kept singing into the night, though Garasha refused to take part in the other two's stage acrobatics.
The tunes were brought to an abrupt end however, when everyone in the tavern heard the window behind the singers and drummer shatter.
"Er, it was all her fault!" the four exclaimed in unison, all pointing at each other as they felt the glares of the whole tavern.

The next morning, Sachiko walked up to a formal kimono-clad Junji in the snow, as they and a number of villagers, many of them Oni, had gathered by the shore.
"And so, we bid a final farewell to Nakamura Motoharu, taken from us too soon. Let us pray his soul finds peace in his next life..." an Oni monk chanted, as a bed of flowers on a small raft, Motoharu's body being too far out of reach, was sent drifting on the ocean towards the horizon.
"*sniff*sniff* Motoharu man!"
Hearing those words, Sachiko was greeted with a sight she never thought she'd see, an Oni crying on another's shoulder. "Anytime I try to do poems I always forget how many syllables, yet that guy was a real pro! It-it just feels wrong y'know, I never thought he'd be gone" the Oni sobbed.
"Motoharu was one of the most talented poets our town had. Okay, Kanaoka ain't exactly known for poetry, but if it was, it'd be due to him" Junji muttered next to Sachiko.

With that, it was time to think about moving from Kanaoka. It's not like a Ronin to stay in one place after all.
[ ] Head down Himikoku's West Coast with Tomoyo, since she talked about heading back to Taiko Island. Sounds good enough to you.
[ ] Go find Garasha to talk about that offer to join the Shinsengumi, what higher-paying work could a Ronin ask for? Even if it will likely make you an enemy of the Empress, or at least her supporters...
[ ] Hitch a ride on a cart heading inland, the Land of Dragons is known for its stunning scenery.
[ ] Eh, maybe stay in Kanaoka a little bit longer...

QM's Note: If you're wondering what good voting to have an awful singing voice will do, it might open up opportunities for higher skills in other arts. Plus, could help with Intimidation.
Also, you probably would've lost against Garasha no matter what, her being a Shinsengumi who can stop time and all. Plus I thought having Sachiko come second place would make for a less typical end to the Tournament.
Also also, let me if you think the Quest has gone far enough that it could use a Recap post.
