Mahou Ronin Sachiko - A Drifting Magical Girl Tale

Juuhachi: River of the North.
Scurrying through the closest shops, the three of them grabbed as many food packages and caskets of clean water as they could carry, or afford, with most of them being assigned to a grudging Vivi to carry. That first step taken care of, the three of them hurriedly looked around for any fast exits out of Shibori City, as wanted posters for Sachiko were being put up fast.

"Over there!" Nagisa pointed out a local pier with several boats already docked at it. She then quickly clasped her hands over her mouth, in case she'd accidentally given her companions away.

"Ah, the mighty Kuchini River of the North! Hmm, but these kinda look like cargo boats, not ferries" Sachiko said eyeing the boats, even spotting a brand new steamship among them. "Well, in the eyes of this City we're already criminals, I think I can risk adding one more little crime atop that pile" she then giggled.

Vivi furrowed her eyes. "And just what're you thinking, Sachiko?" she glared.

The fox maiden, her eyes on one of the men at the docks, twitched her nose and snapped her fingers, and right away she'd become cloaked in the illusion of that one crewman she'd seen. She strolled up to that steamship and told its Oni guard to "Ahem, let them pass" in her gruffest voice, making him nod and step aside for Vivi and Nagisa to then board the ship.

The minute Sachiko herself had climbed aboard, Vivi went up close and whispered to her "Are you sure, if we have to steal at all, that it wouldn't have been far simpler to just take a regular sailing boat, one we could easily steer ourselves without a bunch of other sailors aboard?".

Sachiko just shrugged and said "I was just curious, that's all. I mean, I've never been on or even seen a steamboat before!".

"I see" Vivi gritted her teeth, then said "Anyway, let's just get below decks one of the unfooled crew spots us".

The three of them then spotting some crates to hide by, in the dark grey storage rooms of the hulking, rusty iron ship, they ran their way down the creaking steps and scrambled into the darkness.

"Sheesh, pretty gloomy in here" Nagisa muttered, then putting her hands over her mouth again as another precaution.

"Well Sachiko, seen enough of the ship?" Vivi gave a cold laugh towards the ronin. But before Sachiko could come up with a reply, the whole iron boat shook, then with a great hiss started to sail off.

The three sat somewhat awkwardly silent for a while, having to resist the urge to start delving through their supplies, with only footsteps above and the piping of the engine below for background noise.

But the three tensed up when they heard the whispers of sailors directly above them. "Er, might be a good idea to hide deeper in" Nagisa whispered, as ronin and reporter then nodded and started edging their way along a shadowy wall.
Feeling a hatch below her, Sachiko then opened it only for a large cloud of steam to gush up from what she guessed was the engine room. More alarmingly, once said steam had faded away she found herself looking into the the screwed-on eyes of a Karakuri doll.

"Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert!" it instantly whirred and flashed red, before Sachiko silenced it with a well-placed thundershock. Not like that helped much, as by now any other robots working below decks had already gotten its message.

"See, told you this was a bad idea" Vivi scowled.

In a flash, Sachiko leaped down into the engine room and started hurling any thunderbolts she had left at the Karakuri robots down there. "Coast is clear! Let's get going before anyone else finds we've stowed away" she called up, with Nagisa flapping down and Vivi sighing and slowly lowering herself.

The steamy engine room was no easier to see in than the dark cargo hold, with the short-circuited robots and kanji glyphs for 'steam', 'water' and 'heat' being the only things they could make out. Nagisa though was luckily able to clear the steam with a fair-sized gust of wind created from a... leaf of hers.

"W-what was that?" Vivi stared and mumbled.

"That, Vivi, was a Tengu Leaf, Conductor of Clouds, Administrator of the Air!" Nagisa congratulated herself. "Well, it's nice to have something familiar to me in here, for the most part all I've been sensing here is the crushed-up soul of countless metal ore kami".

"Right, a pleasant image" Vivi muttered.

Leaving the engine room and having to fumble their way through another dark corridor, the three came upon a door that, from the outside, seemed to pulse with an eerie energy, a bright red rune glowing over it.

"Sachiko, I believe it's obvious we should stay away from that" Vivi was first to speak.

"Yeah, I'm with Vivi on this one, I'm not feeling anything the least bit holy emanating from this door" Nagisa spoke second, her voice shaking.

"Okay, but really Vivi?" Sachiko did say taking steps back from the door. "Didn't you say you were interested in gripping stories? What could be more gripping than something so clearly labelled 'Do Not Touch', especially when it makes this ship seem so suspicious all of a sudden, hmm?".

"Well yes, my job does require me to find the best stories" Vivi did admit "However, it also requires me to, y'know, be alive to report them".

"Scaredy-cat!" Sachiko giggled, but then said "Okay, in that case you and Nagisa head on out of here, I still want to take a look at what's behind the door. This is just to, well, fishy for me to ignore".

"Sachiko, don't!" Vivi automatically winced.

The fox maiden then had to bust open the door, her then heading inside to find...
A towering crystal vial, its inside shining a bright crimson, with the roars of some monster echoing out from it. The red aura was so bright that it was hard to make out much, but Sachiko could spot the telltale signs or scales, horns and fangs.

Yet what ended up getting her attention most of all, was a sign at the bottom of the giant vial. "To be delivered to Yasogami Setsuna" she read out "W-wait, I've heard that name. She's one of the Kugyo, the Empress' closest confidants! w-what could she want with something like this?!".

But Sachiko wouldn't get more time then to ponder that question, as she could pick up the sound of pounding footsteps coming her way. "Quick, let's get out of here!" she called out to Vivi and Nagisa before scampering away.

The three soon found themselves up on deck again, with them seeing that this part of the Kuchini passed right through a gaping gorge looming above them. Just atop this gorge they could spot what looked like ruined castles.

However, it turned out the three'd picked the wrong part of the boat to come up out on to, as they soon found themselves cornered as its stern by squadron of armed sailors, most human but a few Oni and Ryu among their ranks.

"Well well, stowaways have we? And sneaking into off-limits areas too!" the Captain snarled as she approached them, her being a Yuki-Onna/Ryu hybrid with long dark blue hair, a sharp white uniform and a fanged smirk.

[ ] Make a break for it by swimming away, then try losing them in those ruins.
[ ] Try taking on all of them, even if they are quite a few.
[ ] Though she and her sailors don't look like the negotiable type, try reasoning with her and getting some answers out of them.
[ ] Just let yourself get captured, they're likely going to Azuryu City anyway, which would be your next stop on the way to Muro Shizan.

Oh god Kiyohime.

Juukyuu: The Ice Captain.
"Hey, not like you're being so lawful either!" Sachiko then shot up "Shipping a Hannya down there".

The Captain flinched at that remark, hissing to herself "So they saw it... Hmhm, alright, you may have figured out our most 'important' cargo. But know this, stowaway," she snarled, and with a flick of her fingers sent an arrow of ice shooting past Sachiko's ear "That delivery was ordered by none other than Lady Setsuna Yasogami, Supreme Priestess of the Grand Shrine. So I, Captain Reika Itsuki, Maiden of the Frozen Seas, am honouring our laws to their fullest!".

"You're one of the Itsuki? Huh, you're an awful long way from your Clan's domain in the Rose Dunes. Oh, and we read that note down there. But what would the Supreme Priestess want with a kept-alive hannya?" Sachiko glared back.

"Idiot, the seas and rivers are the Itsuki's domain! And do you truly think I'll just hand out government secrets to a stowaway? No, a ronin!" Reika snarled "Hahaha, don't think I couldn't tell".

"But what about if that hannya escapes? What happens to your boat and crew then, huh?" Vivi then spoke up.

"Oh how you underestimate us" Captain Reika was now laughing. "Do you think we wouldn't bring along nothing less than the securest Onmyodo seals on a mission from the Supreme Priestess? Well now, I've long tired of you. Men, show these fools what stowaways get on our ship!".

The sailors she commanded all drew their rifles at the three, but before they could fire Nagisa finished chanting something then blew her conch shell. As she did the whole end of the boat shook, and from the river two whirling torrents rose up from both sides, smashing into the crew before they could fire their guns.

"Oh how cute" the Captain mocked, before freezing one of the torrents whole with the tip of her finger. "But I've sailed upon the harshest waters that surround our fair country, so what makes you think two rural river kami will be any match for me?". She then tossed a whole chunk of said ice back at the three.

Sachiko and Vivi responded by casting a fireball and shooting a flame-infused bullet at the ice chunk, freeing the trapped river spirit inside. The sailor tried firing at them again, yet found their guns far too clogged to work in the slightest.

"Alright crew, let's show these stowaways they can snap one arrow, but can't defend against an onslaught of them. Charge!" Reika yelled out as her sailors leaped at the three... only to run right through and crash into the end of the boat, some even falling off it, as it turned out those were just illusions Sachiko had put up while the ice chunk was melting.

"You honestly think my men can be stopped by just a little water? You forget their profession?" Reika snapped back.

Sachiko, Vivi and Nagisa then sprang up after hiding by hanging on the side of the ship, then promptly surrounded Reika. However the Captain simply grabbed the end of Nagisa's musket, froze it solid, then used it as a club against the Tengu's face, even freezing her wings to the floor while she was down.
Sachiko then tried to slash the Captain across the face with her fan, but Reika just rolled under her, grabbed onto the ronin's tail, froze it too before she swinging the fox girl around and threw her face-first into a steel wall.

Yet while Reika was distracted with Sachiko, Vivi took the chance to slice her across the face with her wooden sword, that wooden blade then leaving splinters in a shocked Reika's eyes. Vivi then drew her gun and fired at two humans and an Oni, three of Reika's crew who had come around to try attacking her from behind.
Vivi finished by holding her gun straight at Reika's face, but the captain, even with splinters in her eyes, just elbowed Vivi in the stomach before she could fire, then delivered a karate chop on the back of the reporter's neck, making her collapse.

"The Ronin and Hermit thinking they had a chance was hilarious enough, but an Outsider?" Reika sneered, as she put her foot on Vivi's back, then created a rifle of ice and pointed it at her head. "Hah, and this is why your kind are the inferiors!".

Reika simply shot ice at Vivi's hands, freezing them to the floor, before saying "I could easily freeze all the water in your bodies and end your lives here, but I suppose even the likes of you three are entitled to a fair trial. Our ship the Ryusou is was headed for the City of Azuryu anyway, figured I take the chance to talk some sense into the Queen-clinging Hitorime clan, so I'll also take the opportunity to publicly execute you three there. Show the public what happens when you dare to cross one of the Empress' officials!".

* * *
When the three travellers slowly came to, they found themselves in a near-lightless cell somewhere aboard the ship, they guessed from the similar steel walls and rocking motions.

"Well that could've gone better" mumbled Nagisa, special cuffs having been brough out for her wings.

"Normally I'd agree, but in this case I'm just glad we're even still alive, after facing off against... her" Vivi growled. "Doesn't look like any of our possessions are still with us either".

"Nope, they've still left me with my sword" Sachiko was at least able to smile. "Looks like even that Itsuki woman isn't so dishonourable to part a fellow Samurai from her blade. Shouldn't be so hard to get out of these cuffs either" she said, as she then cast a fire spell to melt them off.

"Granted, escaping from this whole ship won't be that easy" she then muttered.

QM's Note: Bit of Writer's Block meant that this update came in much later than I meant it too.

Also the Itsuki are meant to equivalent to the Mori clan, if the 'ruling the seas' and 'three arrows' didn't give it away. Decided to make them Ryu, even though I already had two big-name Ryu clans, to reference their seafaring prowess and them having a shrine to Benzaiten on Miyajima (Edit: Though since Mori Motonari was famous for his trickery, Kitsune or Tengu might've worked too).

This maybe super late but this is kinda my head-canon image for Sophia, I don't know why but to me is seems to fit well, okay maybe minus the transparent wings but still.

Or now that think about it maybe this works better

^As Sophia Salomonis was essentially meant to be a Magical girl version of Jesus, one appearance that came more to my mind was that of Aerith Gainsborough's, but with more thorns. Obviously for the Messianic parts, but also for the more human, rebellious parts.

^Nice, For me these two came to mind when the Fictional Christianity and Fictional Japan came together. They do look the part, anyway can't wait till next update.

Although there is a literal Magical Girl Space Jesus.

I'm getting really interested in what this world's Gospels might be like. @Lapin Lune Is it all right with you if I write up a fake scholarly article on them or something like that?

Intro to History of Religion - Sophianity (Canon Omake)
I was gonna write a whole in-character thing, but that's really hard, so here's something like a college student's notes from an "Intro to History of Religion" class instead. Some explanations will be included at the end.
-------
The four Gospels are Tabitha, Zoe, Irene, and Elizabeth.

Tabitha has lots of quotes from Hebrew prophecies to point out how Sophia is definitely the Messiah, and there's a bunch of real specific examples of people in power abusing their authority, which gives us a lot of quotes on justice. Tabitha doesn't say anything about Sophia's human birth or early life, so the focus is really on Sophia's godhood, which means it's still pretty early.

Zoe's probably the first known Gospel because Tabitha and Irene rip her off a lot but not each other or Elizabeth, and Elizabeth says a bunch of things about how Sophia's followers were enemies with the Hebrews so Elizabeth has to be the most recent Gospel. Zoe puts the blame for Sophia's death on the Hebrews as much as possible while still including the Lavinians in there, so she was probably writing just after the Temple of Kadesh was destroyed and trying to keep the Lavinians off her back. Not very many stories in this Gospel, actually written in present tense in the original text, makes for a sense of immediacy.

Irene actually seems to be writing for someone in particular named Theodora. No one knows who that is, though, but she was probably pretty rich if she was getting a letter back then. Irene was evangelizing, and she includes lots of stories about Sophia's powers, early life, and other details like what happened to some of Sophia's relics. Maybe Theodora was a collector of artifacts? They're all lost or shut up in the Hierophant's vaults now anyway. Irene's got a lot of quotes for peace and love and all that.

Elizabeth is probably the last Gospel written down. She ignores how the followers of Sophia were Hebrews and makes them enemies instead, so there must have been conflicts that the other Gospel writers didn't go through yet. Elizabeth has lots of stuff about how Sophia's divine, talks about how Sophia's human at the same time and how it works (it just sorta does, Sophia's the "Thought" or something like that), and gives us the only story of her birth, which is super miraculous and has three old women come to check on her mother and all of them get made young again for helping to deliver the baby. The book ends with Sophia telling her followers how to contact her again when she's needed before disappearing. It hasn't ever been successfully accomplished by anyone but super dedicated mystics and they all refuse to describe their experiences in a way that makes sense to normal people. Lots of quotes used in prayers and for mystic studies.
-------
So the IRL Gospels are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and I basically made parallels to each one in order. Matthew and John are names derived from Hebrew names, as are Tabitha and Elizabeth, while Mark and Luke come out of Latin or Greek and Irene and Zoe are both Greek names. Since Matthew and Mark are earlier and shorter than the other two, I didn't change much other than some names.

The Hebrews are what I called this world's equivalent to the Jews, and Kadesh is Jerusalem. Kadesh is a Biblical place name that means something like "holy", which seemed appropriate.

IRL, Luke does indeed seem to have written his book for someone in particular, though it was a man named Theophilus. The thing about relics was inspired by how Luke's account of Jesus's circumcision prompted the existence of several competing relics. Look up the Holy Prepuce, this actually happened. The Hierophant is what I called the Pope-equivalent. It's from an Ancient Greek word for a kind of priest or someone who interprets sacred matters. It's also the name for a tarot card that's sometimes called The Pope instead. I figured that the Church would snap up all the relics of Sophia they could, since they'd probably have a lot of tangible power here.

John's a pretty mystical gospel and does talk about how Jesus does the god thing, though as the Word rather than Thought (since Sophia means "wisdom" and all). However, John doesn't talk about Jesus's birth or early life, that's Matthew and Luke. I decided to move those bits around for fun, and I threw in the instruction manual for talking to Sophia as an extension of the mystical stuff since mystics are all about communing with the divine and being cryptic about what they experience. It didn't come up, but the name I thought of for followers of the religion of Sophia was Salomonites.

^Hmm, yeah I guess I can make that canon (er, no pun intended), especially since nothing about it contradicts what I've written so far about Sophia (who'll likely be relevant again, being, well, Jesus).

It also reminds me I haven't really read the New Testament (other than one bit to fact-check on Lazarus, who incidentally Maria Cruz was supposed to be mimicking), which even as an agnostic I probably should for cultural and research reasons. Other than that, closest experience with the New Testament I have is listening to the Original London Recording of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Only major problem I have with it is that it could use a few more paragraph breaks. I could also say that the name 'Salomonites' would be like Christains being called 'Davidites' (unless some of them are called something like that) but okay. 'Sophia' wasn't just taken from the word for wisdom, it was also taken from a (heavily debated) possible fourth female aspect of God, representing Divine Wisdom, as well as the being from Gnosticism.

'Kadesh' I believe was also the place where Thutmose III and Ramses II both fought major battles, in Ramses' case the largest chariot battle ever which also saw the signing of the first recorded peace treaty.

Change of topic, sorry that the next update will be slightly late. That's partly due to me being a little tired out having written nearly 30,000 words in not even in a month (I was a bit of a procrastinator writing-wise before I started doing Quests), partly due to me being easily distracted, and partly due to me trying to think up a Fakemon region based off Ireland (working title Aosin).

Nijuu: The Three Unifidols!
After Sachiko melted off their chains and tricked the guards with an escaping prioner illusion, the three carefully inched their way out of their cell. Sachiko did light a small flame so they'd be able to see in these dark corridors, but that was it.

Searching around for anywhere their possessions might be kept, Nagisa looked up and spotted a great blue light coming from atop a tall stairwell. "Wow, what is that?" she couldn't help but exclaim.

"Shh, not so loud!" Vivi hissed, though even she couldn't help but be somewhat entranced by that light.

"Ah, well if no guards are up there, then just come right on up and I'll show you!" Sachiko beamed.
Quickly scampering up that staircase, she seemed to spend some time up there, making Vivi and Nagisa think that for a while she'd almost been caught.

"No, that couldn't be true," Vivi whispered "Wouldn't there be the sounds of a fight? Unless," she gulped "This enemy came right up behind Sachiko...".

But just then, as if to trip her up, Sachiko's head peered down as she said "Yup, coast's clear! Sorry 'bout the wait".

"A-ha! See, told you she'd be fine" Nagisa smugly strutted then flew up, even though she hadn't really 'told' Vivi anything.

Standing back on the deck of the ship, Vivi and Nagisa's jaws could've almost dropped as they saw the majestic scene before them. Somehow this whole ship had managed to get all this way underwater, and had docked amidst shell-like towers, pagodas, mansions and streets, all of which save the more important-looking places were encased in air bubbles.
The reporter and hermit then had to take a step back, as a giant turtle carrying Ryu passengers on its shell cast a great shadow, as it swam right above them.

"Well gals, this is Azuryu, the Eastern Dragon Capital! Made great by none other than the New Moon Dragon herself, and home to her descendants the Hitorime Clan" a smiling Sachiko again played the role of tour guide "Whattya think?".

"It's..." a breathless Vivi mumbled. But with the pitter-patter of footsteps coming her way, she changed that answer to "It's something that'll have to wait. Quick, let's go!".

The three then ran their way into the closest corridor, narrowly avoiding the laser-like vision of a Karakuri guard that had come their way.
"Good thing that Captain doesn't seem to be here..." shuddered Vivi.

"Yeah she won't be, unless we've been knocked out longer than I thought," Sachiko kept her voice low "From what I've heard, she's trying to convince the Hitorime to side with the Empress. Hah, like's that gonna happen, they've been loyal to the Queen of Swords since the Unification!" she laughed, but then had to admit "True, times are stranger than I'd like to admit, so anything could be possible really. Either way though, least she'll be out for a while".

They silently made their way down this new corridor, checking every room to typically find nothing, and occasionally having to stealth-electrify a guard.

"Y'know, I could make short work out of all these guys if I Just contacted a kami of the ocean..." Nagisa brought up, only for Vivi to immediately glare at her.

"What, are you insane? Do you want to so obviously give our presence away?" the reporter snapped, then hissed "Assuming that wouldn't drown us all first".

"Oh come on!" Nagisa cried out, though sulked and said no more about it.

The Tengu however soon spotted an ajar door, and dashing over to it, almost without regard for being caught, she then seemed to have luck on her side as she called back "Heyheyhey, think I just found all our stuff!".

Sachiko didn't hesitate to rush over, with Vivi trying to look positive yet still stepping forth cautiously. Sure enough, it did look like all their possessions, war fan, money, notebooks, guns, camera, conch shell and tengu leaves, had been placed in the one storeroom, all of which unfortunately yet expectedly looked to have someone else' fingerprints all over them.
"Likely from that Captain or her goons checking them for evidence of spying" Vivi snarled.

"Well, I kinda wouldn't blame her. I mean, we're a ronin, a foreign reporter and a hermit out of the mountains, samurai have suspected people for less" Sachiko had to say.

"I-I'm not suspicious!" Nagisa had to speak up "A-am I?".

But ronin and reporter never got a chance to respond, as their luck ran out when they were so rudely interrupted by-

"Ohohoho, the treasure is ours, dear battle-sisters!" a shrill, sing-songy voice spoke up.

Sachiko, Vivi and Nagisa all turned to see three women had turned up out of nowhere. All three had brownish-black hair, one in a bushy ponytail, one a bob cut and the last straight with bangs, and matching black dresses, decorated with orange, pink and aqua frills respectively. Looking closer the pink-frilled ponytailed one had fox ears poking up from under her headband, the long-haired aqua-frilled one had robotic joints, and bob cut and orange-frills had webbed dragon ears poking out.

"Ahem, sorry, do believe these were originally ours" Vivi feigned a smile at them.

The bob-cut wearer swiftly shot back with "What? Hmph, as if such a graceless, uncoordinated rabble as you could ever claim this heroes' treasure! Clearly it must go to the cutest-"

Ponytail and pink frills spun around, did a pose and grinned.

"most beautiful-"

Bangs and aqua frills slowly leaned over and raised her hands.

"And most handsome ronin trio to ever grace the Empire East of the Sun! Kicho-desu!" Bob cut raised one hand and pointed the other towards herself.

"Kaiko-desu!" The ponytailed fellow kitsune posed again and beamed, stars almost bouncing off her expression.

"And Ginko-desu" the aqua-frilled Karakuri simply said.

"Himikoku San-Dai-Ronin, the Three Unifidols!" they all cried out in unison, somehow managing to make the image of a rising sun and confetti appear behind them.

Sachiko couldn't help but clap, which earned the strangest of glares from both Vivi and Nagisa, making her blush.

"Is-is this what city-folk call entertainment?" Nagisa muttered "Just seems weird to me".

"Hey wait, did you say you're ronin too?" Sachio then asked.

"Affirmative. Our Princess ordered us to leave, as she felt we were no longer young enough to be the Perfect Singing samurai" Ginko said in monotone.

"Hmph, the nerve of her!" Kicho promptly spoke up, though then glared at Kaiko "Of course, it didn't that someone was seeing boyfriends behind her back".

"Hey whoa, hold on there" Kaiko smiled and tried to defend herself "Let bygones be bygones girls, that's what battle-sisters do, right?".

"Well our, ahem, appreciation for the demonstration" Vivi interrupted "But we must be off now, with our possessions thank you very much. I'd ask for an interview with such... characters as you three, but I wouldn't want to wreck Himikoku's dignity in the process" she slipped that in.

"Hah, do you fail to take Himikoku's Most Glamorous seriously?" Kicho raised her voice to the roof, as all three of them-
"Senritsu!"
"Chowa!"
"Ritsudo"
- unsheathed their swords "We meant what we said, this treasure is ours, foreigner!".

"Hey wait, you can't all draw your swords!" Nagisa burst out.

"Incorrect. Is that not proper protocol for a battle between samurai?" Ginko replied.

"What she says is true" Sachiko muttered, hands reaching down to Sakkakuhime.
[ ] "Vivi! Nagisa! I'll hold them, but you gotta back me up!"

QM's Note: Don't know if having Sendai's equivalent be an underwater city might possibly be in bad taste, even if it's due to its connection with dragons than anything else.

Edit: Also, even though I imagined Vivi as the over-eager reporter, it's kinda strange how I seem to be writing her more and more as the straight man. Eh, I guess even eager reporters have their limits.

Azuryu seems like a cool place, and it has been a while since the 2011 tsunami hit Sendai.

One gripe with the update though, actually saying Noon of the Samurai in dialogue feels a bit off to me. It makes sense when used as a setting descriptor but it doesn't sound like something that would actually be said in a conversation (this would apply to all of the time periods expect the dawn in my opinion) maybe refer to it instead by what ever you decide to call the major conflict of the times?
