Dealing with the Witch
[X] Hunt down the perpetrator.
-[X] Using Deception Seidr, you should be able to slip out deceit from the person trying to cast the Women-Statue-Ritual-Spell thing. They are hiding from the village after all (and most likely of the village as well), which is Deception.
--[X] Try looking for 'concentrations' of Seidr. Turning a woman into a statue semi-permanently requires a lot of magic which should be obvious, unless, say, they are hiding it with, say.. Deception Seidr.
-[X] If you can't hunt them down during the day go with the Torhild Bait plan.

"First of all, I'll look for any high concentrations of seidr," you tell Erika, "The culprit doesn't seem to strike until night has fallen so we have until then to find whoever it is. Whatever they are doing to turn all of these women into statues must require a large amount of seidr "

"That gives us a couple of hours then," replies Erika as she glances up at the sky, "Do you need any help?"

"I could do with someone to watch my back," you reply, "But if we do find whoever is responsible, we won't go after them on our own. We'll go to your father and get his assistance as Thane."

"Yes, that makes sense," agrees Erika, "Father will be very eager to get vengeance on whoever is behind what happened to Sigurda."

"Then it is settled," you say, "We shall try to track down the seidr behind the enchantments."

***

The ritual to look for high amounts of seidr is something any proper seeress either knows or can whip on the fly. And as much as you never expected to be one, you have learnt enough under almost a year of Lady Loki's tutelage to be considered a proper seeress if a highly inexperienced one.

Despite some initial difficulty remembering the right way to pull it off, you managed to summon a trail to follow. A trail leading to the largest concentration of seidr in the village. A trail that leads you right to the centre of the village and the seven women turned statues trapped there.

"In hindsight, it should have been expected that this is where our search would lead," you muse as you and Erika look at the statues, the latter's gaze lingering on the golden form of her older sister, "Unless there was a hidden secret for us to find, this would be the highest concentration of magic."

"So what now, Torhild?" asks Erika, a hint of frustration in her voice, "Is there anything else you can do?"

"I could try looking for Deception Seidr with my own," you tell her, "If I cannot uncover the source with conventional means, it must be supernaturally hidden somehow, likely with Deception Seidr or something similar."

"Why do you even have Deception Seidr?" asks Erika with more than a little accusation and suspicion in her voice.

You don't let her distrust bother you. Deceit and trickery is looked down upon and for someone to have, there is an ill reason for it more likely than not. Fortunately for you, you have a perfectly good explanation.

"I acquired the attention and favour of Loki in my past," you answer, "As a result of that, I have acquired access to Deception Seidr and my teacher believes in her students learning all of their possible Seidrs so I learnt how to wield it."

"This is reasonable," agrees Erika as she gives you a contrite look, "My apologies."

"Don't worry about it," you reply, "It is something that I have to grow used to. People look down on Deception Seidr, sometimes even if that person has good reason to know it."

"Right and you can track the one responsible for all this?" asks Erika as she waves a hand at the statues.

"I can track any attempts to hide with seidr within the village," you assure her, "That should include the culprit."

"And once we have found them, we'll go and get Father to crush them," says Erika with a savage grin.

"This is the home of Osmond and his wife Dagrun," says Erika with a hiss, "Osmond is a farmer and not much of a man. When he married Dagrun, people wondered how someone like him could win the heart of a woman like her. Dagrun herself is a newcomer to the village, only coming here after she married Osmond last year."

"Dagrun sounds like the more likely culprit then," you muse, "An outsider who marries an unimpressive man seems more likely than the unimpressive man. "

"Do you think she planned this from the start?" asks Erika with a scowl at the thought.

"I wouldn't be surprised if she did," you answer, "The woman could have easily married Osmond to have a reason to be in the village and then spend the time between now and then preparing for whatever ritual she is performing."

"Whichever one is responsible, we should go and tell Fath-look out!" exclaims Erika.

"What-" you start only for flames to engulf you.

That amount of fire should have left you half dead with severe burns. With your Golden Armband of Fire Resistance, it is blinding warmth washing over you. This is the first time that your powerful artefact has come in handy and it may have just saved your life.

"Torhild!" cries Erika, "You witch! I'll kill you for that, Dagrun."

"Erika, I'm fine!" you call out as the flames begin to die out.

But it is too late as the older girl has drawn her sword and charges at the robed woman. As you charge up a lightning bolt, you watch as Erika swings at her opponent only for the witch to dodge with a Deception Seidr faint.

That feint isn't the only hostile spell you can feel being casted as and the second quickly becomes apparent as Erika's face morphs from one of anger to one of excitement. Realising what is happening, you quickly discard your lightning bolt to try and throw up some protection for your new friend.

Yet it proves too little too late as Erika's body rapidly turns to iron. One moment you have your angry friend rushing into battle and the next there is a statue of a young shieldmaiden who looks very excited. Then a moment later, the statue of Erika is gone, leaving just you and the witch.

"You are quite unfortunate," says the witch with an annoying smug undertone to her words, "I was originally limited to just one casting of the ritual a night, but now? I have the power of another eight women to call upon so I do believe I have the juice to complete the ritual tonight. And a powerful young seeress like yourself will make quite the centre piece to top things off."

"You really think you'll get away with this?" you taunt her, pushing back your anger as you call another lightning bolt in your hand.

"Why wouldn't I?" she taunts you right back, "I have a couple of days before your teacher returns and the ritual will be complete long before then. I'll be gone with you and the others before she returns and even then, I fancy my odds of taking her out with my new power."

At that declaration, you just laugh because what else is there to do?

"You really don't know who you are messing with?" you retort because that is no way that this witch can match Lady Loki.

"I'm messing with someone who is going to spend the rest of their existence empowering me," replies the witch before a thin spear of metal comes at you.

You roll to the side and toss your lighting bolt at her. The woman barely blocks it with a hastily summoned slab of metal that is blown apart by your powerful bolt of lightning. Flames and metal alike soon cover your opponent as supernatural protection while you toss another lighting bolt. You chain-teleport behind her in several flashes of lighting and you manage to get out a third lighting bolt before the witch throws more metal spears at you, your own attack having stripped away much of her protection.

You attempt to teleport only to find a slab of metal that has rapidly risen from the ground blocking your way. Shaking your head as you regain your wits, you instinctively throw yourself to the side with your Lighting Blood. Moving at supernatural speeds, you barely avoid being caught by the statue curse.

"Tch!" hisses the witch as she glares at you with frustrated eyes, "I guess I'll have to find easier prey tonight."

And like that, the woman melts into liquid metal, sinking to the soil where she was standing. You are left alone, panting from the exertion of the fight.

"What happened!?" demands Thane Alvar, the old warrior comes marching up to you, flanked by two of his men, as you make your way back to his home, "Why has my treasured Erika become one of the statues?"

"It was Dagrun," you tell him, hoping that giving him a more deserving target will redirect his wrath from you, "Erika and I went looking for the culprit and it led us to the home of Osmond and Dagrun. Dagrun attacked us and cursed Erika. I was able to fight her to a standstill when she tried to do the same thing to me and then she fled."

"Dagrun," says Thane Alvar with a hiss as he comes to a stop, "Are you certain?"

"Erika recognised the witch who attacked us as Dagrun," you tell Thane Alvar, "And if you brought me before Dagrun, I would be able to recognise if she was the witch who attacked us and cursed Erika."

"Men, we make for Osmond and his wife," roars Thane Alvar as he turns his attention from you to his warriors, "We'll get that witch and make her pay."

He marches past you, barely making sure he doesn't shove you out of the way. His men pass you by, one on either side of you, and you are left to continue your journey back to the Thane's home. If Thane Alvar defeats Dagrun, then you will just need to wait for Lady Loki to return, but if he doesn't, then you will need to make preparations to do the job yourself.

Appeasing Thane Alvar (Persuasion Check/DC10) = 15+3.7

***

In the end, Thane Alvar fails to catch Dagrun and her husband. Their home is already vacated and the only thing that the Thane found there was a trap that laid him and his men low for the foreseeable future. There is no sign of either one of them in the village despite practically every villager joining in when they learn why they are searching for the couple. The last that was seen of them was Dagrun finding Osmond in the farm fields and dragging off her husband.

Fortunately for Erika and all of the other victims, you spent the last hour of the day making your preparations for the night. With limited time and resources, you aren't able to do much, but you don't have to do much. You just need whatever you come up with to last for the night and not a moment longer.

A Potion of Enchanted Presence is a potion commonly used by spellcasters before a battle thanks to Presence enhancing one's ability to cast spells. The boost to Presence provided it can be a crucial edge that is the difference between victory and death. In your case, it may very well be what grants you victory over Dagrun and between the ingredients that Lady Loki has left you and your own good luck, the potion you have created is especially high quality.

It will certainly make her come after you. For the night, your Presence has been boosted far beyond it should be, reaching levels that most folk will never reach in their lifetimes. It is thrilling to wield power that should take you years or even decades to achieve even if it will only last a few hours.

Beyond the temporary nature of it, the only other downside is the side effect of having boosted Presence. Just as Strength increases muscles and Agility increases leanness, Presence increases good looks and so you are now arguably more beautiful than even Astrid. Most people would be pleased to have such excellent looks, but you would rather witness this level of beauty on another woman than have it yourself. At the very least, you would rather not have to adapt to a different sense of balance so soon before a fight.

Regardless of your feelings on the potion and its effects on you, Dagrun will definitely come after you. The chance to acquire your newfound Presence for her ritual will be too tempting for the witch to pass up even if her good sense would otherwise prevent her from picking a fight with someone of your skill. Dagrun will come for you tonight and you'll be waiting for her.

Waiting on the outskirts of town, you are alert for anyone seeking up on you and your efforts pay off as you spot the witch who attacked you and Erika earlier sneaking up on you. The Deception Seidr would be enough to fool most, but you are familiar enough with those sorts of tricks to see through it.

With a grim smile on your face, you toss a lightning bolt her way. Dagrun intercepts with a fireball, the two elemental attacks countering each other midair. She throws metal spears at you and you dodge with teleports to the side as you ready up another lighting bolt. More metal is tossed your way before you can find off your spell and you buy yourself some time to recover with a blinding flash in the witch's face.

Large gouts of flame form walls of fire on either side of you even though the woman has to know by now that fire won't harm you. Then as you sense a familiar curse being casted, you throw yourself though the flames and out of the way with Lighting Blood as there is no way you intend to become a statue tonight or any night for that matter.

"Ugh," groans the witch as she glares at you, "Why can't you just give up already? You are clearly outmatched."

"A true Norse warrior never gives up," you retort as you toss another lighting bolt at her.

Once again, you battle the witch with lighting as Dagrun assaults you with fire and metal. You feel like you have an edge, yet in the end, your advantages are outmatched by the stolen power that Dagrun is tapping into. When the battle concludes, it isn't because one of you has proven themselves better than the other, but because you have run out of spell slots for the day.

"Finally!" hisses Dagrun as she senses her chance and begins to cast her curse once more, "Time to become part of my masterpiece, you whore."

Without Lighting Blood, you don't fancy your chances of dodging the curse if it can even be dodged without supernatural means. So you call upon your Deception Seidr and attempt to unravel or at least block the curse. Alas your efforts are too little. Perhaps if you had more time to understand or study the curse, but attempting to stop it mid-cast proves to be beyond you.

And it is absolutely embarrassing. You are going to be a statue and it will be so embarrassing. You are embarrassed to have lost to Dagrun despite stacking the odds in the favour. You will likely be trapped with your body still as the feminine beauty it currently is and won't that be embarrass-No!

You are the son of Sigurdr Princess-Taker and apprentice to Loki himself. You will not be bested so easily and if you go down, you will go down fighting to the very end. You might be out of spells, but you still have your sword and years of training with it-your sword is made of adamantine! Adamantine is famous for its resistance to magic, like the magic of the curse inflicting you.

Even as your body rapidly turns into the blue-white of adamantine and begins to grow stiff, you draw your sword. With the last bit of effort before your arm stops responding you slash at your own body, barely cutting the flesh of your own before it turns to adamantine. Then a moment later, you suddenly feel the ability to move again as the spell is sufficiently weakened.

"That's right-oh come on!" starts Dagrun before the witch breaks into a snarl, "I beaten you! Stop messing things up already."

"No," you retort as you turn to face her and the witch pales.

"Wha-no, it doesn't matter," says the witch as she calls upon the curse once again, "Your power will be mine!"

This time the curse is almost pitiful to dispel as it washes over you, your new adamantine body depriving it of much of its power. Instead you charge at Dagrun with your sword and a war cry. The witch doesn't make it easy for you as her Metal Seidr applies to you. Even with its inherent anti-magic nature, your adamantine body is still enough of a metal to be affected, making your blows slow and sluggish.

In the end, your father's lessons prove to be good enough for the task at hand as you stab Dagrun, running her through with a sword that matches your body. Dagrun lets out one last grasp and gives you a look of terror and frustration before life leaves the body of the witch.

"All hail Torhild Adamantine-Beauty!" calls Thane Alvar as he throws a party to celebrate the defeat of Dagrun despite his injuries.

"To Torhild Adamantine-Beauty!" cry the assembled villagers.

Even if the other eight victims, including both of Alvar's daughters, are still trapped as statues, the one responsible has been stopped and your teacher has claimed she will restore them in a few days at most. And given what you, her apprentice, has done, no one in the village is willing to question those claims.

As for yourself, you have earnt your first Kenning, Adamantine-Beauty. You can understand why that is your Kenning. You emerged from a battle against a powerful foe with a beautiful body of living adamantine, saving the village. That is the sort of deed that gives you a Kenning.

You have mixed feelings about your Kenning. Objectively speaking, it is fairly powerful as Kennings go as it lets you keep both your body of living adamantine and the effects of your potion. The only downside is just the inherent side effects of high Presence, which is a beautiful body and to complain about that when your Kenning is so powerful feels right.

Gods, half of you wants your Father to know what you've done and the other half wants him to never see you like this.

The undeniable upside to this whole affair is that you got some Piety out of it and a whole bunch of Prestige. Between what you already had stockpiled, you have accumulated enough Piety to improve Hugr or one of its lesser attributes while your unspent Prestige is sufficient to boost your Hamr or Strength once or your Constitution and Agility twice.

Well, this is a big update. So things went fairly well all things considered. You had some bad rolls and you had some good rolls with everything working out in the end. You also got a Kenning for Torvald and you were lucky enough to roll the more impressive of the two. Not that Witchstabber would have been a bad Kenning, but its anti-spellcaster bonus doesn't really equal what Adamatine-Beauty gives Torvald.

Anyway, the vote is fairly self-explanatory as you are just picking some stats to improve for Torvald.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

Traits & Gratitude
[X] Plan: Leader of Men
-[X] Upgrade Agility x2.
-[X] Upgrade Intellect
-[X] Upgrade Presence

Lady Loki returns the next day, your teacher bringing all of the ingredients needed to restore the statues back into women with her. While others might consider the timing of her return to be a fortunate coincidence, you know better and are certain that your teacher had been watching the entire time.

"Congratulations," says Lady Loki as she looks you up and down, "I'm glad to see you have gone above and beyond what I was expecting. I'm unsurprised to see that you defeated the witch, but to get a Kenning out of it and such a powerful one at that, well, you impressed me."

"Thank you, my lady," you tell her because you just impressed a god.

Or maybe it is goddess? Um, deity might work best. Yeah, deity is a good way of describing your teacher.

"We'll discuss what your Kenning means for your future later," says Lady Loki, "Next I will walk you through making the cure to give you the experience of it."

"Okay," you agree before deciding to ask a question about your Kenning anyway, "Will I be able to keep my Kenning beyond being Torhild? Beauty is a womanly thing."

To your surprise, your teacher just laughs at you and you barely refrain from bristling at her.

"Young Torhild, you might not have noticed this, but men can be considered beautiful as women," replies Lady Loki after a moment, a gleeful smirk on her face, "Though with your preferences, I'm not surprised that didn't occur to you."

"Ah, okay," you say, feeling a little embarrassed, but mostly just pleased with the discovery that you will be able to keep your powerful new Kenning when you are Torvald again.

"Speaking of beauty, how are you enjoying yours?" asks Lady Loki slyly as her grin somehow gets even bigger.

"I'm even prettier than Astrid," you reply, instinctively looking down at the two large mounds on your chest, "Bigger than her too. I don't mind the look, but I would enjoy it on another woman than my own body."

"Hah, of course your mind went there," sniggers Lady Loki as she gives you a mirthful look, "Those are pretty big, but that's what happens when a lady has high Presence. I suppose you would like to be smaller than your childhood friend again?"

"Can you do that?" you ask eagerly.

"Absolutely," replies Lady Loki and your teacher snaps her fingers.

You wait for the changes to take place, but nothing happens as Lady Loki gives you a pleased grin. Then it hits you as you go over the exact wording that the deity used. Lady Loki only implied she would make your chest smaller again, but there are two ways to make your chest smaller than Astrid's.

"You made Astrid bigger than me," you accuse your teacher and she just laughs at you.

"Guilty as charged," replies the Trickster God because that is what you get for trusting such an infamous prankster, "Nothing untoward, just a godly boon of Presence so don't worry your pretty little head. Want me to do it to Brunnie too?"

"Would you listen if I said no?" you ask her drily as you cross your arms.

"Nope!" says Lady Loki cheerfully as she snaps her fingers again with crackling laughter.

***

With Lady Loki instructing on each step, you easily brew up the potion to restore the cursed women. It is a fairly standard anti-magic potion with a few parts tailored towards this specific curse with you brewing a large pot of it as you need to make potion eight times, one for each victim. A sufficiently skilled seer or seeress could even break the curse with just their knowledge and seidr mastery, but while you have no doubts that your teacher is one of them, Lady Loki seems content to play the part of a lesser seeress.

The entire village is gathered around the centre as you pour the potion on each victim. Each saved woman is disoriented as they go from emotionally-locked statues into being flesh and blood again, but they soon get swamped by their kin. As Thane Alvar embraces his older daughter Sigurda in a fierce and hearty hug, you begin to pour the final potion on Erika.

As the purple liquid flows down over the iron, it rapidly shifts back into what it once was. Erika stumbles forward and she rapidly looks around before her eyes locked onto you.

"I knew you could do it, Torhild!" exclaims Erika as she drops her iron sword and embraces you in a surprise hug that leaves you yelping, "That traitorous witch was no match for you!"

"I'm glad to see you're okay," you reply as you hug her back because you may have only known her for a couple of days, but you fought a witch together and that means something.

"Wow, you feel all weird," says Erika as she runs her hand through your hair.

"My body is living Adamantine now," you answer, "That means my skin is metal not flesh now"

"Well, not all weirdness is bad then," replies Erika as she strokes your metal hand.

"My father says that good weirdness is the spice of life," you tell her.

"I agree with him," says Erika cheerfully.

With all the women free and restored, Thane Avlar and his village hold another feast to celebrate and once again, you are the guest of honour through this time you are sharing that position with your teacher. While you are again honoured for defeating the witch, Lady Loki is credited with actually saving the women from Dagrun's curse.

The women you saved all come up to you with their families professing their thanks and gratitude towards you. You would be a liar to claim you didn't enjoy the praise because it felt good to be recognised for your deeds. It might not have been the deeds you expected to do growing up, but they are deeds to be proud of.

Beyond a generous payment of silver that the entire village chipped into, you receive other gifts of gratitude. For the most part, those gifts are simple things like some iron ingots or a few foreign gold coins from lands overseas. Most impressive of all is a bundle of soft silk that Thane Alvar gifts you with, the fabric almost humming with magical power inherent to it.

"That's Seersilk," says Lady Loki as she looks at it from over your shoulder, "Also known as Sorcerersilk. It is sought after as any clothing made from it boosts the magical prowess of the wearer. Also extremely comfortable to wear too. You can turn it into something when I teach you about enchanting. We should really get around to that aspect of seidr at some point."

The next morning sees you awake early as for whatever reason, you didn't get a hangover from all of the booze you consumed last night. Your Constitution is that good for it so you suspect that your new Kenning may be behind it. It does make sense that a body of living metal doesn't get hungover. Or drunk for that matter. And thinking about it, you haven't felt the need to eat or drink since your body became living Adamantine even if you are still able to do those things.

"Hey Torhild," says Erika, disrupting your thoughts as she makes your way over to you.

Unlike you, Erika is definitely hungover if the way she is carrying herself is anything to go by. That said, the fact she is here with her sword indicates that Erika is here for another spare with you.

"Hello Erika," you reply, "Want another spar?"

"I wouldn't mind that, but I have something to ask first," replies Erika.

"Want me to make a tonic for your hangover?" you suggests.

"I wouldn't mind that, but there is something else I wished to ask of you," answers Erika before taking a deep breath, "I would like to become your shieldmaiden, to swear an oath to serve as your huskarl."

"Wait, what?" you say in a rather undignified manner because you were not expecting that.

"I don't want to give up on my preferred path in life, but there isn't much opportunity to earn glory here in the village," continues Erika, "And Father is having trouble finding marriage prospects for me. I'm the second daughter and most men are put off by a woman who likes to fight."

"So you want to join me," you say.

"Yes!" exclaims Erika, "You're awesome and powerful and you travel about a bunch. I know you are already a better fighter than me and you are a mistress of seidr when I don't have any, but I figured you could still do with someone around to watch your back."

We are approaching the end of the arc. I wasn't originally planning to drag it out longer, but I realised we hadn't gotten around to covering making enchanted items despite the vote to go down the magic path. So we'll be covering that plus Astrid finding 'Torhild' before moving on.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

Enchanting Time
[X] Yes. You accept her oath. Gain Erika Alvarsdottir as your Huskarl.
[X] Magic Resistance. Your body is naturally good at rejecting magic. All unwanted magical effects are downgraded by one degree.
[X] Emotion Control. You have a talent for keeping firm control over your emotions and feelings. You have control over your emotional state.
[X] Empowered Seidr. Your magic is inherently powerful and abnormally strong. Your spells and other magic are more potent and powerful.

"You are getting the hang of it," you tell Erika encouragingly as you finish her swordswoman lesson for the day.

It is an odd sensation as you are effectively on the other hand of your own lessons from Father. Erika might be older than you, but you are both physically superior to her and have greater skill with the blade. Despite the best efforts of your huskarls, her village life has not given her the opportunities to grow strong like you have and the daughter of a thane isn't as prestigious as the son of a high chief.

Still, Erika is learning and with a few more months, she will be good enough that Father would accept her into the ranks of his warrior albeit as one of the most junior. If she continues to stay by your side, she will be a cut above the average Norse warrior within a couple of years.

That new Hamr Trait of hers helps too. Erika has recently gained enough Prestige to improve her Strength to the point of gaining a Trait, in which your huskarl used to gain a body of living Steel akin to your own body of living Adamantine.

"Thank, my lady," replies Erika with a metallic grin.

"Just keep up with your practice and in a few years, you'll be as good as I am," you say and the woman beams even brighter at the prospect.

"Now if you ladies are done swinging swords, I'll need to borrow my apprentice," says Lady Loki as your teacher steps out of the shadows.

"Of course," says Erika respectfully before leaving as your huskarl has been very deferential towards Lady Loki ever since learning her true identity.

"Still haven't told her about Torvald, Torhild?" asks Lady Loki teasingly once Erika is out of earshot and you grimace.

"It is an awkward subject that hasn't come up yet," you answer evasively.

"Procrastination is a valid way of dealing with things," says Lady Loki and you flush in embarrassment, "Now, we are getting around to enchanting."

"Are you finally going to let me make a proper enchantment?" you ask.

"Enough time has passed since your last practice," says Lady Loki, referring to the fact that it has been a month since you enchanted your gambeson.

There are a few rules to the art of enchanting items. The first is that the power of your enchantments is limited by your Hugr and Presence with a certain amount of the two being required to make even a simple enchantment. While you have exceeded the minimum requirement, someone like Erika would fall short though your huskarl is close to meeting the lowest benchmark.

The next is that you can only make a single enchanted item per month. Sometimes a Bloodline, Kenning or Trait can improve upon that timeframe, but you lack any of those so you have to wait an entire month between enchantments.

The third rule is that you must have the Seidr access to the nature of the enchantments you are making. Given the wide variety of Seidrs you have, it isn't much of a problem for you, but things like fire-based enchantments or wood-based enchantments are beyond you as you lack any Seidr for such things.

What sort of Enchantment did Torvald add to his gambeson? Must be related to one of your Seidrs.
[ ] Lightning Speed.
[ ] Deceptive Appearance.
[ ] Steel Strength.
[ ] Write-in.

What sort of Enchantment(s) does Torvald add to Torhild's Seersilk Dress? You have three points to spend. Must be related to one of your Seidrs.

Invisibility & Dream
[X] Lightning Speed.
[X] Write-in.
-[X] Invisibility. lvl 2
-[X] Deceptive Appearance. lvl 1

Your gambeson is now one of lightning speed, enchanted with lighting seidr to grant faster movement and swifter reaction times. It isn't the near-godly speed of your Lightning Blood, but it is enough to give you a slight edge against an opponent of equal Agility or hold your own against a foe with greater Agility.

Your Seersilk Dress will be something else. The dress itself is a masterpiece, an embroidered kirtle of purple and gold, the soft silk humming with magical power, waiting to empower its wearer even without any enchantments. And you certainly make sure to enchant it.

***

"Invisibility and a deceptive appearance are an interesting choice," says your teacher thoughtfully, "Being able to take on a different appearance has its clear benefits, especially if you are using an enchanted item to do so freely instead of relying on limited spell slots. Yes, that would work quite well with your distinctive look if you wish to avoid standing out or go unnoticed. As for invisibility, that also has its benefits and I'm not sure any of the straightforward methods would work for you."

"What do you mean?" you ask with a frown as invisibility is invisibility after all.

"Invisibility is basically going unseen and unnoticed, Torhild," replies Lady Loki, "Most folk just go for not being seen by eyes, but that leaves you vulnerable to heard or smelled. And it is fairly common to have anti-invisibility in spells or traits that boost eyesight."

"Really/" you inquire.

"Yes, people don't like to be snuck up on and being able to see invisible people is a common way to avoid that," says Lady Loki, "That or something to boost one's ears or nose to detect those they cannot see. People always think of direct invisibility when going unseen, but what about that which is seen yet ignored?"

"What do you mean?" you ask again.

"How many nobles ignore their servants, treating them like furniture?" says Lady Loki with a grin on her face, "Or how many drunks think nothing of a comely barmaid getting their empty mugs? Or another warrior in the army? Invisibility can be fitting in and getting ignored as a consequence of that. And all of that can be done with mundane skill and no seidr involved. When spells and enchantments do get involved? You can get your run of a castle or camp with nobody stopping you. Sometimes they can even help you out, thinking that they are aiding a comrade. "

"Huh, I never thought of that," you say.

"Few do unless they are taught it or find themselves on the receiving end," your teacher tells you with a wink, "You grew up the son of a high chief, Torhild, so tell me, how often did you pay attention to the servants? Remember their names and faces or did you just take their presence for granted?"

That's…that is kind of concerning when you think about it. Outside of Wulfwynn, you never paid attention to the thralls and servants.

"The look on your face says it all," continues Lady Loki, "Invisibility by seen and heard without being seen or heard is something few know of. If it wasn't for your distinctive appearance, Torhild, I would be willing to bet on you being able to pull off that kind of deception without using any seidr."

"Thank you," you say, accepting the compliment for what it is.

***

Gods, you love the feel of the dress, a soft silky touch on your skin with the power of your garment flowing into you. Invisibility by being ignored and dismissed. How did you not see that without your teacher pointing it out?

Lady Loki is right. If it wasn't for your Kenning, you could pull it off without any seidr. As things are, your new dress will be excellent for that. While there are limits to how much you can diverge, being able to change your appearance on the fly is oddly freeing. No longer will your metallic body draw looks whenever you walk into the room or down the path. That said, the changes feel a little more than just cosmetic.

"How much of an illusion is this supposed to be?" you ask as you prod your arm, it feeling like the flesh and blood

"Illusion is a relative thing," replies Lady Loki, "How deep it goes, that depends on the caster."

"It certainly feels like it isn't metal," says Erika as your huskarl takes your hand and inspects it, allowing you to feel the steel skin of her body on your apparently fleshy body.

"And in my case specifically?" you inquire, used to this around way of answering questions from your teacher.

"The illusion would break if anything hurt you enough that the toughness of your true body would come into play," says Lady Loki, "If someone touches you, your flesh and blood body would be real for all intents and purposes, but if they stabbed you or tried to break a limb? Then the illusion would fall away to reveal your body of living Adamantine."

"And the invisibility aspect?" you inquire.

"Works better the more plausible it is," answers your teacher, "Another shieldmaiden in a large army would go unnoticed better than one trying to force their way into a tight knit group. Likewise, a maid would draw less notice than a princess, especially if people cannot remember that princess after she has left their presence. The less inconsistencies or leaps of logic, the better the deception will work. At least if you want to go unnoticed long term.
"There is nothing wrong in tricking others into thinking you are a leader to learn their secrets so long you don't expect your trickery to remain unspotted. And be careful around Christians. Some of their lot can be rather good at seeing through trickery, supernatural or otherwise. Lastly, some entities out there might just be able to see through it. You might be able to fool an oaf like Thor with your deception, but someone like myself or my blood brother would easily see through it."

"Could Torhild improve it with her seidr?" asks Erika.

"Of course, she can," replies Lady Loki, "The effects of enchanted items can be enhanced by spells or act as foundations to boost the effects of spells beyond what they are normally capable of. It would be trivial for her to use her dress as a foundation to make a deception spell greater than what it should be."

"That's cool," says Erika wistfully, "I wish I could do seidr like that."

"Torhild can teach you," says Lady Loki as the Jotunn casually volunteers for you, "It would be good for her to get experience at passing on her knowledge and expertise."

"Does she have the Traits for it?" you ask sceptically, "No offence, Erika."

"Traits are needed for innate seidr, but someone who knows a seidr can pass on their knowledge of it even if their student lacks the ability to learn it on their own," explains your teacher.

You begin to nod your acknowledgement of the point before the implications hit you.

"Wait a moment," you say slowly, "Does that mean you could have taught me seidr beyond what my Traits allow?"

"Of course, I could and still can," replies Lady Loki as your teacher gives you a pleased look, "The question is why should I?"

"Do you have something in mind?" you ask cautiously.

"I certainly do," answers the deity with a smirk, "Though telling you ahead of time would ruin some of the fun. Perhaps you have an alternative in mind? Just make it worth my time."

"Which means make it amusing for you," you note dryly.

"Exactly," agrees your teacher readily and without shame.

How do you respond to Loki's offer?
[ ] Accept the mysterious offer of your teacher.
[ ] Write-in your own alternative idea.
[ ] Decline.

If you accept the offer, choose what type of seidr you would like to learn.
[ ] Write-in.

***

After giving Lady Loki your answer, you find yourself having a dreamful sleep. You are not just a young man in your dreams, but one with years of experience. You fight with Astrid on one side of you and Erika on the other, your wife and concubine aiding in battle against the Christians. Or is it your fellow Norsemen? The dream blurs just who your foes are as you, the sovereign of your own kingdom, conquers new land for your domain.

Astrid wields a mighty battle axe as she strikes down a Christian Knight, cracking open the plate armour with a powerful blow from the enchanted weapon. Erika guts a Norseman with her sword, empowering the blade with her Metal Seidr.

As for yourself…

How do you kill your enemies?
[ ] Your hands crackle with lightning as you slay down the Knights/Vikings with your seidr.
[ ] Your hands firmly grip your Adamantine Sword as you cut down the Vikings/Knights.

Okay, coming back to this quest in the hope of actually finishing it before I start a new project. Got a couple of choices to make here and then the next update will be Torvald's reunion with Astrid. After that, Torvald's childhood is over so we'll have a few updates of Torvald gathering followers and preparing his invasion plans before he goes and conquers a kingdom for himself or dies trying.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

A Choice Is Made
[X] Accept the mysterious offer of your teacher.
-[X] Ruler Seidr
[X] Your hands crackle with lightning as you slay down the Knights/Vikings with your seidr.

Your hands crackle with lightning as you unleash the fury of the skies upon your foes, smiting knights and electrocuting vikings for you are Queen Torhild Adamantine-Beauty, mighty seeress and mistress of seidr. You are the daughter of Sigurdr Princess-Taker and like your father before you, none are capable of standing in your way.

With dreams of conquest and queenship, you have a good night's sleep, waking well-rested in the morning as the sun rises.

***

You notice something is off when you first woke up as for the first time, you don't feel uncomfortable as Torhild. No, it is quite the opposite as for once, it actually feels natural. No discomfort to ignore, no nagging feeling that it is right, just your body being your body.

And yet something doesn't feel right. Why would you feel uncomfortable as Torhild? You are Torhild right? Why would you think otherwise?

Except you remember a second lifetime, one as Torvald Sigurdrsson rather than Torhild Sigurdrsdottir. Why in the names of the Gods would you have two sets of conflicting memories? You aren't sure, but you are certain who is to blame and that is your teacher, the Trickster God.

"Lady Loki!" you call as you look around the campsite for your teacher.

"W-what is it?" asks Erika as your huskarl wakes with a yawn.

"Torhild," replies Lady Loki from where she is cooking breakfast, "I see you made your choice."

"What did you do?" you demand as Erika looks confused between you and the third member of your group

"I gave you a choice," answers your teacher before Erika falls back down into her makeshift bed to your alarm, "Don't worry, I only put her back to sleep."

"Why can I remember growing up as both Torvald and Torhild?" you demand, "What sort of choice leads to that?"

"I gave you a choice between being Torhild the Seeress and Torvald the Swordsman," replies Lady Loki with an annoying grin on her face, "You were in conflict over the two so I gave you a chance to resolve it before you come of age."

"That wasn't the choice," you protest, "It was between using my seidr and my sword."

"Not my fault you didn't read between the lines," answers your teacher with a dismissive shrug, "You are Torhild now and as far as anyone is concerned, you have always been Torhild. Honestly girl, be grateful that I let you keep your memories of being Torvald. I could have just wiped your memories and let your existence as Torvald just be forgotten."

You want to argue more, but you bite back on the temptation. Lady Loki has already done the deed and you can't see any good from arguing with her over it. Being Torhild in truth is hardly the worst fate out there and antagonising the deity could easily make things worse for you.

"Now," says Lady Loki as she clasps her hands together with a gleam in her eye, "Let us discuss my payment for teaching you Ruler Seidr."

***

Astrid the Warrior-Witch had been searching for her hidden lover for over a year now. Not that she had ever admitted her feelings to the other woman and Torhild had always been too dense to pick up on how she felt about her. Astrid would have thought that Torhild didn't share her proclivities if she hadn't caught the other girl repeatedly ogling her chest when she thought no one was looking.

A year since Loki had kidnapped Torhild and sent Astrid on a quest to find her. Hopefully Loki has allowed Torhild to make productive use of her time. Astrid knows that she has certainly grown a lot over the last year of adventuring across the lands. And given how she inexplicably gained a Boon of Loki check though no clear action on her part, Astrid can only guess that Torhild is responsible for it.

The young woman has gone through a lot in her year of adventuring. She has earnt more Piety and Prestige than she had in the rest of her life. She has claimed the Kenning Warrior-Witch and she gained at least one Trait in every category. She has carved herself a name across the lands as a budding adventurer and future legend of her generation.

And yet it hasn't been enough. She still hunted down dozens of monsters and ridded the land of more than one band of outlaws. Astrid walks in the footsteps of her mother and even as she grows her legend, she continues to fail in her quest.

That isn't enough to stop the young shieldmaiden. She is an Adventurer and a Heroine, defined in her by her Traits and so Astrid continues in her quest.A quest that has led her back to Vestfold as she seeks yet more leads on the beautiful wandering seeress and her pretty apprentice Torhild.

The local market is busy as expected of a thriving city like Vestfold. Merchants hawk their wares while individuals of means some to see if there is anything to catch their eye. Astrid must count herself amongst the latter as while she is primarily here for information, she cannot deny that she is keeping an eye out for things to spend her hard-earnt coin on.

Then she spots a merchant with an interesting set of products on display. Over the last year, Astrid has been able to acquire a steel axe and some enchanted jewellery, but her armour remains mundane and iron. Which to be fair, that is still fairly impressive by any reasonable standard, but Astrid finds herself looking for an upgrade. Hopefully she'll find something here in Vestfold, but if she doesn't, she'll just settle for enchanting one of her existing pieces of armour. Fortunately for Astrid, it seems that the gods are smiling upon her as this merchant has some very high quality pieces of armour amongst her wares.

"What sort of material is that chainmail forged from?" asks Astrid as she inspects a blue-white piece of armour that reminds her of Torhild's sword.

She wants to say it is adamantine and certainly looks like it is to her, but Astrid doesn'r want to get her hopes up. After all, what sort of merchant would be selling adamantine armour in the open market. Even if she was, surely she would have drawn a massive crowd by now.

"Adamantine," answers the merchant in a hushed tone, "I take it you are interested?"

"What is the price?" inquires Astrid quietly, all but certain that it will be beyond her means.

"I'm sure we can come to an arrangement," says the merchant with a grin on her face, "I shall warn you, it comes as part of a set with this steel helmet."

"Why is adamantine paired with steel?" the shieldmaiden asks warily as something does feel right about this, "And what sort of arrangement are you thinking of?"
"Why the one we just agreed to?" replies the merchant and Astrid's head feels foggy for a moment before she shakes it off.

"Of course," agrees Astrid though she cannot shake the nagging feeling that something isn't quite right, "Thanks for the armour and information."

What were the terms of their agreement again? Astrid gets the armour and information on where to find Torhild and in return, she paid…what did she pay? Does it matter anymore since it has already been paid? Yes, yes it should except no, it doesn't matter.

Ugh, her head hurts.

Astrid shakes her head again as she walks away with her new acquisitions, clearing away the fog that replaced her doubts. She has a solid lead on her quest and she isn't about to let it go to waste. She just has to go and deal with yet another spot of trouble.

What will Astrid face before being reunited with Torhild?
[ ] Troll. There is a troll in the area who has claimed Torhild for dinner.
[ ] Witch. There is a rogue seidr user in the area that is holding Torhild captive.
[ ] Bandits. There is a band of outlaws in the area who have taken Torhild hostage.

Sorry about how long this update took. I closed the vote and started writing it only to come down with a somewhat bad cold. Anyway, the last vote was a secret test by Loki to see if the protagonist would remain as Torhild or go back to being Torvald. Beyond that, Astrid and Torvald/Torhild are going to be reunited and I was planning on that in this update except I decided to cut things short after how long it took to get this far.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

Reunion
[X] Troll. There is a troll in the area who has claimed Torhild for dinner.

This won't be the first troll that Astrid has slain. She has fought a couple before and knows what to expect. Tall and hairy semi-giants, trolls are smelly and ugly, but dangerous foes. They have both strength and toughness which isn't made up for by a lack of speed. Beyond their durability and hitting power, it is their speed that makes them dangerous as while they are usually dumber than a human, the trolls still have the intelligence to make plans and enact deceit upon their victims.

They have a weakness to sunlight and fire, but Astrid isn't sure she'll be able to take advantage of those apart from her Dragon Aspect letting her breathe fire. Normally she would prepare some runes or set a trap, but if a troll has Torhild, she cannot afford to wait. Trolls have no problem eating people and while it might be safer for Astrid to wait, waiting could be the difference between saving Torhild and finding a troll that is digesting its dinner.

In the end, trolls can be killed like anything else. You just need to hit them harder a greater number of times. And Astrid is very good at hitting things hard a great number of times.

***

As expected, the troll is an ugly thing when Astrid finds it, twice her size with lump green-grey skin and grotesque beady eyes. It doesn't see her coming as Rapid Perception allows her to bypass the mistakes in her stealth and as the troll isn't a Norseman, she isn't obligated to announce herself before attack.

No, the troll only finds out that Astrid is there when she attacks with her enchanted steel axe, the weapon enchanted to let her attack multiple times within a space of moment. The steel blade of highest quality tears into the leathery hide of the troll, dealing injuries that would outright kill anyone who didn't have a high Constitution. Then she uses high level Speed Up to give her another three moments of furious attacks.

The troll howls in anger and pain, its back a bloody mess of hacked apart flesh, and swings a meaty fist at Astrid. The Warrior-Witch simply tanks it, trusting in her Adamantine armour, her superhuman Constitution and her Armour Trait to take the hit. And she does, barely feeling the blow as it smacks into her as she focuses on keeping up her attack.

A troll is tough, but taking over a dozen attacks capable of killing a mortal man every moment is something beyond even the toughness of a troll. In less than a minute, the troll is dead. Cutting into bloody chunks and strips of meat by Astrid's axe.

Letting out a sigh of relief at her swift if brutal victory, Astrid looks around for any sign of Torhild, hoping that this won't be another dead end.

What she was not expecting was for her new chainmail and helmet to start changing. Adamantine remains Adamantine and steel remains steel, but the once armour takes the form of women. And one of those women is someone who Astrid recognises and that recognition makes her heart flutter.

Torhild may be older with a body of Adamantine plus great beauty that she did not previously possess, but Astrid still recognises her childhood friend even as the noblewoman lands on the ground on her butt. At last, Astrid's long search is over as she and Torhild are finally united.

"Torhild," exclaims Astrid and not caring of what is going on, the Warrior-Witch throws her arms around her best friend as Torhild returns to human form.

"Hey, Astrid," replies Torhild weakly as Astrid hugs her tight, "Sorry about all that. Teacher wanted to play a final parting prank and I sort of agreed to it. Well, I did just agree to it, but she offered a good detail and not many of the details."

"Teacher?" inquires Astrid.

"Loki," answers Torhild and Astrid scowls at the mention of Torhild's kidnapper, "She taught me a lot over the last year, but now that has come to an end."

"So what now?" asks Astrid as she lessens her grip on Torhild, "I've been looking for you and now I've found you, I have no quest before me."

"I'm going to be a queen one day," declares Torhild, "Ruling my own kingdom where no one, but the Gods themselves can tell me what to do. Oh, and that is Erika Alvarsdottir, my huskarl."

"Huskarl?" repeats Astrid as she look over at the girl with a body of living steel, who gives Astrid a nervous wave.

Astrid feels a tinge of jealousy towards the girl. Oh, she is clearly more powerful than this Erika in every meaningful way and she has known Torhild for far longer, but it is Erika not Astrid who gets to claim themselves as Torhild's first huskarl.

"Yeah, I saved her and her village from a witch and she decided to swear herself to me for the ensuing adventures and chance to see the world," says Torhild, sounding a touch bitter and jealous as usual, "By the way, you were impressive back there. Your Time Seidr is really powerful now."

"I've been working on it and my enchantments," answers Astrid, smiling at the praise of the woman she desires, "Going for power in a couple of areas instead of spreading myself out."

"I would have done the same except my teacher said that was a waste of her apprenticeship," replies Torhild, "So I've learnt a variety of Seidr at lower level and earnt my fair share of Prestige and Piety."

"I've been picking up plenty of Prestige and Piety myself," says Astrid, "Throwing yourself at every bit of trouble in search of leads and strength will do that to you."

"I hope that hasn't caused you too much trouble," says Torhild worriedly and Astrid internally preens at the concern being displayed.

"Nothing I can't handle," Astrid assures Torhild, deciding not to mention that her Adventurer Trait means adventure will find her regardless of whether she seeks it out or not, ensuring that she will never know true peace again.

After all, she will be able to handle it until the time for her to enter Valhalla or Folkvangr comes.

"I have no such tales of glory," says the other woman, Erika, quietly, "Just one adventure in my home village where I was more of a victim than an adventurer."

"Then you shall simply have to earn your legend fighting alongside Torhild and I," declares Astrid, deciding to not hold her feelings against Erika, for the woman has done nothing to earn Astrid's ire.

Erika might be Torhild's first huskarl, but Astrid will make certain she is the second.

What do Torhild and her huskarls do over the following year? Pick 3 Options
[ ] They visit Torstensby so Torhild can reconnect with her family.
[ ] They go adventuring to improve their strength and fame.
[ ] They hunt beasts and monsters for loot.
[ ] They join raids to Christian lands.
[ ] Torhild seeks to expand their retinue.
[ ] They engage in trading to improve their coffers.
[ ] Torhild looks for allies for her future conquest.

Okay approaching the end game so I can wrap up this quest. Going to do like five or so updates like this where you pick three options for Torhild to focus on over the year and she'll go conquering. After that, I'll write an epilogue or something and the quest will be over.

Also ditching the character sheet because I intend to go narrative for the endgame of the quest.
