Episode 1 - 2

Momo was left alone in apparent isolation. The situation seemed a little too complicated for you to comprehend, but was it too sensitive a topic for a first meeting? At a glance, Momo probably would've answered whatever question you asked to the best of her ability. She was your junior, so it was best to make a conscious effort to treat her with the respect of your station. Best not to put her into a position where she's uncomfortable, lest you tempt fate.

You piano your fingers on the glass table. "So, Momo…"

"Yes?"

"What are your sisters magical girls?"

"Huh?"

The words tumble out of your mouth, out the window, and into the metaphorical abyss."I mean, how do you…?" That also wasn't what you meant. "I didn't mean it like… that. I mean to say--"

Momo, thankfully, takes the verbal failures in stride.
"Bleh! Okay!" You breathe deep. "How do you feel about your sisters being magical girls? I mean, Mami and Kyouko. You could be related, but… Wait, are you?"

Momo giggles. It was cute, but mortifying. You can talk to Sayaka just fine, and your sister, and maybe even Hitomi. Beyond that apparently you had the social acuity of a brain dead goldfish. Midori was relatively easy to get along with. Mabuyu was… well, you didn't want to think about your past failures. Why were you so nervous? Sayaka was right. You needed way more practice.

"Mami is like an older sister to me." Momo says. "She takes care of me when my sister is out on her magical girl business."

"Oh, I see. So, Kyouko's not around very much?"

"Big Sis Mami explained this to me before. Magical girls have different territories that they hunt in." Momo grabs two coasters, one red and one yellow, and sets them next to each other. "Mitakihara is Mami's territory." She taps the yellow. "And Kasamino, my hometown, is my sister's." Another tap.

"That's where Kyouko is now?"

"Yeah. She should be here later tonight, though, since it's the weekend."

"So do you get to see Kyouko a lot?"

"Yeah." Momo stacks the coasters. "A lot more than I used to."

The phrasing was enough to know that prying was off limits.

"How do you feel about them being magical girls, though? It seems pretty dangerous."

"I'm aware."

"You are?"

"Mami and my sister said that anything could happen at any time." A lonely smile pushes her cheeks apart. "That's true for anyone. But, if a magical girl dies in a barrier, no one would know."

You think back to your nightmares, to the fall, and shiver. "Yeah."

"Kyouko told me that it's not really a matter of 'if', it's a matter of 'when'." Momo whispered. "So I'm preparing myself for that day."

If you contracted, you would be putting Madoka and your family through the same exact pain. It was already something you considered, but hearing your anxieties confirmed by another was entirely different than wanton worry.

Mami's return to the living room is heralded with the clink of teacups. "What's with the long faces, you two?"

"Nothing." You gaze at your reflection on the table. A downcast gaze and a solemn smile greets you back.

"S-sorry, that's my fault, Mami." Momo bows her head as she takes a tea cup.

"It's mine, I asked a question I probably shouldn't have." You speak up.

"What sort of question would that be?" Mami says, sliding you a cup of hot tea atop the yellow coaster.

"About how she felt about you and Kyouko being magical girls."

"Ah, I see." She feigns a smile, pouring a cup of her own.

"Well, actually, if I could, Mami, how do you feel about being a magical girl?"

"Why do you ask?" Her eyes narrow.

"I mean, well… if I were to become one, I mean, I'd like to know what it's like, what to watch out for. That… kind of thing?" You say, sweat forming on your brow. Why was she looking at you like that?

"If you don't have a reason to become one, I'd advise against it."

"Really?"

"Yes." She sips some of her tea. "Simply walking away would probably be for the best. That's easier said than done, I know, but it's something you have the choice of doing. Once you become a magical girl, there's really no going back. You'll spend every day fighting for your life. It's the same thing I told Momo when she first started living with me."

"I remember a fight that Mami and I had." Momo says. "I saw how tired she was, and how she was fighting alone. I wanted to make a contract to help her, but she said no."

"The Sakura sisters are stubborn to a fault." Mami shrugs, taking another sip. "But she hasn't contracted, so it seems my advice stuck."

"It sounds like you don't like being a magical girl then." You say.

You cup your hands around the cup, blowing off some of the hot steam.

"I didn't really have much of a choice in the matter." Mami says. "It's not a matter of loving it or hating it, it's simply a way of life. Mind you, there are aspects of it I do like: saving people from witches, stopping familiars, and letting me meet people I never would have otherwise."

Mami looks at Momo with a smile.

"So that's how you met Momo?"

She nods. "Yes, through Kyouko. Momo's sister was my apprentice just a little under a year ago. She's grown so much, she doesn't really need my help anymore."

"Did you guys work well together?"

"We… had our disagreements, but ever since Momo started living with me, we've settled our differences."

Being a magical girl was difficult business. The gravity of the conversation was enough to have you reconsider the thought entirely. Leaving Madoka alone was the last thing you wanted to do.

"Hey, Momoka. Aren't you going to drink your tea? It'll get cold." Momo says.

"Oh, yeah." You take a sip.

Your eyes widen. Your tongue burns. It wasn't cool enough. It was still very hot, but also very sweet. Not bad. You wondered what kind of blend she used -- wait, no, still burns. "Ah! Okay! That was way too hot!"

"Give it a little more time to cool." Mami hands you a cool glass of water.

"Thanks." You down it in no time flat. "Phew, okay."

For the next few minutes, you sit quietly and chew on some of the peach cake that Mami had brought out. Momo and Mami talk about their day with you as an onlooker. Fighting the temptation not to eat more of the cake was a herculean task, but you manage. After another moment, Mami's eyes drift toward the clock.

"I should get going." She stands up.

"What's wrong, Mami?" You say.

"She's going hunting for witches." Momo answers.

"Yes, sorry." Mami grimaces. "I'd like to stay and entertain our guest a bit more, but duty calls."

"I know." Momo stands up, walks over and hugs Mami. "Come back safe, okay?"

"I will." Mami kisses Momo on the forehead. "Be good, okay?"

Seeing this, you …

[_] … offer to go with Mami. You still wanted to see what being a magical girl was all about.
[_] … ask Momo to join you at the cake shop with Madoka, Sayaka, and Hitomi. Leaving her alone didn't feel right
[_] … spending time with Momo here at the apartment. Finish the tea and just hang out. Seems like she could use a friend.

Episode 1 - 3

When Mami left the room, you saw Momo hang her head. After the initial shock of Mami's living situation ebbed away, something felt off. Amidst the colorful decorations and vast space of the apartment, there was a looming loneliness. Not just in the apartment, but in the people who called it home. How long was Momo made to wait? How long would she have to wait tonight? What if tonight was the night they never returned? The thoughts swim through your mind with no destination, and no answer. You simply smile. "Mami is kind of cool, isn't she?"

"Yeah." Momo sips her tea. "She is. Big Sis Mami is the coolest."

The mood dies with Mami's exit. Momo sits in silence, drinking her tea, hardly touching the cake that Mami had set out. It feels like a crime to leave it simply untouched, so you try to eat a bite or two. Your fork hits the empty plate with a clatter.

"What's wrong, Momoka?"

"Doesn't feel right." You frown. "Guess I'm just not in the mood."

"I'm sorry."

"No, it's nothing that you did. It's not Mami's fault either. It's just--"

Magical girls exist, yet they are slaves to their duty. If they have loved ones and end up vanishing, they'll never get answers as to why.

"Hope shouldn't have to end in despair." The ethereal voice echoes in your mind.

"It's not fair." You push your empty plate forward. "None of this is fair."

"It's not meant to be fair." Momo says.

"What?"

"'We made a wish for a miracle, so now we're paying our dues'." Momo says. "It's what my sister said to me."

It made sense, in a weird way. You get an impossible wish granted, so now you're working to pay it off by fighting witches. However, that thinking is flawed, isn't it? The end result would be the same regardless of the wish being made. If for example, you wished to find your missing sock, you would be paying the same price after the fact if you wished to end world hunger. There's also the possibility of Kyubey refusing a wish, which is something you had yet to consider. The entire ordeal with wishes, magical girls, and witches was still so unreal. Considering these thoughts at all would have been beyond you before a few days ago.

"I don't know." You tap the glass table. "Feels like to me there's something that doesn't feel right. I mean, you've heard the saying 'if something is too good to be true, it probably is'?"

"Yeah." Momo nods. "Kyouko said the same thing to me when I first thought about contracting. 'It ain't fun and games, you'll die'."

No doubts about that, after your first hand experience. If betting your life was the cost of the wish, then that in itself seemed fair. A small price to pay in the grand scheme of things, especially with the amount of influence a wish could hold.

"Any wish, huh?"

"Are you thinking about contracting, Momoka?"

"Not specifically, no, mostly just considering what I would wish for if I did."

It didn't hurt to consider the option if things got bad. Within your mind, the most obvious thing to wish for was…

[_] … to protect everyone that you cherish. Whether that meant fighting witches for an eternity, or always being there for others, your life would be a small price to pay for it.
[_] … to be the person that you want to be but can't. Regardless of your own hang ups, it was something only a miracle could accomplish. To be someone who you could truly be happy with.
[_] … to fight every witch, whether by wish or with your own two hands. It was roundabout, but at least that way magical girls would be happier. Though, that would put most magical girls out of the job, wouldn't it?

It may be a joke, or it may be an earnest wish, but it was what you were feeling in the moment.

After a brief break, you and Momo get back to chatting about happier topics. The autumn weather, thoughts on Mitakihara Middle School, your own classes and hopes for the future. Funnily enough, neither of you had any dreams worth noting. You were young, so it was to be expected. The conversation carries the minutes into almost an hour. Momo cleans the plates and you grab the teacups. The half-eaten cake now rests inside the refrigerator.

"Oh!" You eye the clock. "I have to get going."

"You're meeting your sister, right?"

"Yeah, you want to come?"

Momo tilts her head.

"Do you want to come?"

"Oh, um…" She plays with her braid. "I'd like to, but I should stay home and wait for Big Sis Mami and my sister."

"They would be happier if you came." The voice whispers advice into your ear once again.

"I-I think they'd want you to come." You play it off as your own idea. Where was this voice even coming from? "I mean, you spend a lot of time alone by yourself, right? I think just letting them know where you are would be enough… ?" You hesitate, unsure of what you were even saying. The logic was sound, but you knew little to nothing of her circumstances outside of what she had told you.

Momo mulls it over, then slowly nods. "Sister does tell me I need to 'get out more'." A complicated expression adorns her face. "Okay. I'll go, but just for a little bit."

"A-alright!" You smile. "I can't wait to introduce you to my sister!"

"It's only fair. You've met mine already."

"Both of them, in fact."

Momo beams, leaving a note for Mami and Kyouko, and the two of you are on your way.

This first meeting was not how you expected this to go at all. Hitomi is infatuated, looming over Momo as if she was a doll. Madoka is smiling, waiting for her turn to speak to her sister's first friend. Sayaka's just relieved to see that you're alive and in one piece.

"It's nice to meet you, I'm Momo Sakura. I'll be in your care." She bows.

Hitomi offers the same polite bow. "I'm Hitomi Shizuki. And this is Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki."

"T-two Momos?" Madoka looks between you and Momo. "What do we call you?"

"Ms.Sakura is fine." Momo says.

"We've met already." Sayaka smiles. "Nice to see you again, Ms.Sakura."

"Likewise."

"Thank you for looking after Momoka for me. She can be a handful. I really appreciate it." Madoka chuckles.

"She wasn't any trouble at all."

"G-guys, I'm right here." You frown.

"Sorry, Momoka." Your sister laughs. "I didn't mean anything by it."

"Sure you didn't." Sayaka grins.

You groan, slumping down in your chair, trying to hide behind the table. You notice the plates sitting strewn about the table with some half-eaten cake. Your seat is set with the silverware folded up in a nice bundle. The consideration was enough to make you smile.

"O-oh." Hitomi looks at her watch. "Look at the time. I'm sorry, but I have to go."

"What is it this time? Tea ceremony? Or are your parents pushing more piano lessons?"

"It's actually Japanese dance." She sighs, standing up. "I've already taken care of the bill. Enjoy the cake, Momoka and Ms.Sakura!" Hitomi waves emphatically as she dashes out the door.

Madoka, Sayaka and Momo say their farewells.
You wave bye to Hitomi.

"Oh, has your party arrived?" Another voice draws your attention. A green-haired girl. Purple eyes. Messy, long hair. Wait, that was the girl from the arcade. She was wearing a clean maid outfit. Okay, wait, you had a few questions. None of them were likely to get straight answers, but you had questions nonetheless.

"Mabayu?" You stare.

"... Oh." Mabayu blinks. "You're Kaname, right? We met at the arcade."

"Yeah."

"You know each other, Ms.Aki?" Madoka glances between you and Mabayu.

"I mean, you know what they say, it's a small world." Mabayu shrugs. "So, uh, you ordered a small peach cake for 'Momoka', I believe?"

"Yes." Madoka nods. "But, what about you, Ms.Sakura?"

"I'm fine." She raises her hands. "I ate before I came."

"I can share if you want, Momo." You offer.

Sayaka leans in, a toothy grin on her face. "You'll share with your new friend, but not your ol' buddy Sayaka? Man, I see how it is."

"It was one time. Can you let it go?"

"Nope. Sayaka Miki never forgets and never forgives." She points her fork holding a piece of cake at you. It was meant to be an accusatory gesture, but you take it as an offering.

Chomp.

"Ah! Momo!" Sayaka yelps.

"Thanks for the food." You chew with pride.

"That's it, I'm taking your cake for the other Momo." Sayaka reaches for your plate. "She doesn't steal from people."

"Stealing? Looked like you were offering it to me." You slap Sayaka's hand off. "You've got plenty of cake left on your own."

"Momoka, Sayaka… please, not in front of our new friend."

"It's fine." Momo sits down, completely unfazed. "I'm used to this kind of thing."

"I'm going to go… get the cake now." The maid walks off behind the counter.

Mabayu returns with the small peach cake. A compromise had been reached, courtesy of Madoka. At the expense of not hearing you and Sayaka bicker, of course. A small piece was given to Sayaka as recompense for your confection thievery. Momo was given a slice of her own, but she hardly touched it.

"You okay, Momo?" You say.

"Y-yes, I'm fine." Her eyes dart toward the door then back to you.

"Doesn't seem like you're having fun."

"No, it's not that." Momo fervently shakes her head. "I'm just--"

She pauses. Just like Midori before. Not now. You had got to be kidding.

"I have to go." Momo sits up.

Sayaka doesn't act surprised. She shoots you a glance. Your friend was thinking the same thing you were.

At this moment, you--

[_] Go with her, ask Sayaka to stay with Madoka.
[_] Ask Sayaka to go with her, stay with Madoka.
[_] All three of you go with Momo.
[_] Let Momo go by herself.

Episode 1 - 4

Guilt compels you to stand. You move in front of Momo with an arm barring her path."I'm coming too."

Momo hesitates. "What? You don't even--"

"It's not hard to guess why." You frown. "It's Mami, isn't it?"

Momo solemnly nods. Her eyes gaze toward the door, pleading for you to just let her leave.

"If you're going, I'm going." Sayaka stands up, her chair screeching against the floor.

Madoka's mind races; her eyes bounce between the three of you. Despite being ignorant of the risks, she stands up. "I-I'm coming too."

Your hands tremble in fear. Sayaka had watched you vanish into the maw of the void. The frigid darkness against your skin, the gnashing fangs tearing at your ears. You wanted to forget, to spare Sayaka and Madoka the same hell. Why was this happening? Why now? You close your eyes, trying to shut out the thoughts.

Sayaka was involved. No matter how you tried to justify it to yourself, she would thrust herself into the frey. She knew witches existed, that magical girls were real, that a miracle could be granted. You had no right to stop her. Madoka, however, had no reason to worry about something that didn't concern her. It was, ironically, wishful thinking; her best friend and her sister were involved.

With a balled fist, you swallow your concern. "Okay, well, looks like we're going too, Momo."

Momo, apprehensive, nods. You exit the store and run after Momo. Her dash was deliberate, her breathing steady, despite the circumstances.

"So what's this about?" Madoka says, struggling to speak between breaths.

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you." Sayaka says.

"Eh?" Madoka looks at you, begging for an explanation.

"If I said 'magic', would that be enough?" You have an easier time keeping up with Momo, but your legs are starting to hurt. Talking definitely didn't make this easier.

Madoka looks lost.

"It's the reason for my nightmares, Madoka." You say.

"O-oh, I see." Madoka fidgets. "So, this is dangerous, then?"

"Yep." Sayaka places a hand on Madoka's shoulder. "It'll be fine. We're here with you."

Madoka nods.

"It's here! Big Sis Mami is here!" Momo pivots, turning on a dime and down the alley. An alley lined with interconnected pipes. They connect, split off, and interlink again like veins. The evening sun peers through the clouds, dyeing the alley in a crimson hue.

A familiar face meets you at the end of the corridor. "Momoka?"

"Midori?" You yelp.

Midori's outfit had changed. A long, blue scarf flows with each step she takes. Her armor clinks as she stops. "What are you doing here?" Her eyes darted from you to Momo.

"I called Momo for back-up." Kyubey says, leaping down from Midori's shoulder. "Mami is fighting by herself. I'm not sure if your help alone would suffice, Midori."

"Kyubey, you--!" Midori bites her lip. "I--... we don't need other people involved. Especially not civilians!"

"I would hesitate to call Momoka Kaname and Momo Sakura civilians." Kyubey scratches his ear with his foot. "Actually, all four have the potential to be magical girls."

"Magical girl?" Madoka blinks, the words bringing her back to reality. "I can be a magical girl?"

"Yes, all you have to do is make a contract with me."

Midori winces at the cat-rabbit's words. She ignores him, addressing your group. "Stay out here. I can't protect all of you, so just--"

"I have to go in. I can't leave Mami alone." Momo says, pleading.

"No." Midori declares. "That's not happening."

"But--"

"No." Midori grits her teeth. "You're not going inside. I can't guarantee your protection. I have to go in alone."

"... If you leave me out here, I'm making a contract to save Big Sis Mami." Momo's eyes burn with resolve. "You won't get in my way, Ms.Midori."

Midori steps back, eying what you assume to be the entrance to the Witch Barrier a mere few feet away. "You're really making this hard. Dammit, why are you so stubborn? Why don't you trust me? We fought together before."

"It's not that I don't trust you." Momo clutches her chest. "It's just that I want to guarantee Big Sis Mami's safety. She's some of the only family I have left. If I lose her, if I lose them again… I…" The facade of strength crumbles. Tears cascade down her face. "I just don't want to lose anyone else! I don't want to be alone!"

Momo sobs echo in the alley. Sayaka remains silent. You want to step forward, to comfort her, but the words don't come. You frantically scramble for what to say and what to do. All you can do is watch as a witness to your friend's pain.

Where you fall short, your sister steps forward.

"Ms.Sakura." Madoka hugs Momo close. "It's too late to give up hope now. I don't really know what's going on, but you trust Ms.Mami, right?"

"Uh huh." Momo struggles to speak through her tears.

"I don't think she's fighting alone." She hugs tighter. "I don't know what a magical girl does, but if they're anything like the ones I know -- she's fighting for your sake, right?" Madoka smiles brightly. "If you went into that scary place, then she would be worried. So I think you should be a good girl and listen to Ms.Midori."

"But…"

"It's okay. It's a big sister's job to protect the little sister, after all."

"Big Sis Mami!" Momo cries, clutching Madoka's back. She wails into her chest. A comforting hand rubs her head.

"Ms.Midori, I'll take care of Ms.Sakura." Madoka forces a smile, wiping away her own tears.

"I don't know how to thank you." Midori says.

"Protect Momo and Sayaka."

"Ah, that's your game." Midori sighs in defeat. "Alright, okay, fine. I'll do what I can. Momoka, Sayaka, we're going."

"R-right." Sayaka nods, stepping toward the barrier entrance.

You remain silent.

"Hey, come on." Sayaka slaps your shoulder.

"Stay close." Midori conjures a decorative, white sword in one hand and a silver shield in the other. She stabs into the wall and swings down. It tears as if unfurling the fabric of reality. It was the same magic Kyouko used to free you from the witch barrier at the mall.

"Is this supposed to be exciting?" Sayaka mumbles as she leaps into the barrier.

With the image of the white blade in your mind, and a heavy heart burdening your steps, you leap into the witch barrier.

Interlude: Struggle in the Coliseum

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2oLSuongkY

Gunfire and clashing steel harmonize in a symphony of destruction. Swords explode in the air, raining shrapnel onto the sand below. A volley of bullets meets another wave of clamoring blades. The ground shakes under the weight of the collision. A veil of dust settles across the battlefield. The crowd of familiars cheer, yelling and clapping in an unknown tongue.

The challenger, Mami, lands atop the hilt of a sword. "You won't go down quietly, will you?"

Steel grates on steel. A black shadow emerges from the cloud of dirt and debris. A metal giant composed of bound swords, tied tightly by rusted chains. It strides with purpose, ripping a large hunk of steel from the ground.

"I think I understand now." Mami leaps off of the sword. "That's how you were able to take so many."

A field of swords. In the arid land of the Witch's Barrier, trophy's dot the landscape. Magical girls lie fallen, bolted to the ground by rusted swords. Mami closes her eyes, offering a prayer to the fallen. She casts her hands out, conjuring a musket in each hand.

She fires the first shot. The giant rushes forward, angling the sword into the ground. The magic bullet strikes the blade and from the impact, a ribbon explodes forth. The newly formed tether binds the blade to the giant's hand. The second shot burrows into its arm. Fabric flows forth from the wound, spilling onto its leg.

It trips mid stride.

Four more muskets. Four more shots. Mami's barrage binds the foot, the leg, the waist and elbow.

She raises her hand, twirling a ribbon, forming it into a large cannon. "Tiro--!"

Mami's bindings explode. The air screams. A black blur barrels forward.

"Oh no--!" Mami disperses the cannon. The ribbon wraps in on itself, becoming a bulwark. The thrown slab tears through the ribbon like scissors through paper.

Mami leaps away as the ribbon rips apart. Rocks burst out from the slab's impact with the wall.

The giant closes the distance with one leap. Mami, cast in the monster's shadow, lassoes its leg with a ribbon. With a tug, she lifts herself into the air, past its hulking frame, and out of its reach.

Mami throws her hand up as if a maestro leading a procession. Muskets appear on a wall as her ready performers. Each beat their drum with the blast of gunpowder. A cacophony of gunfire joins the ringing cheers of the crowd. The bullets dent metal hide, hardly grazing the body underneath.

From the smoke the goliath leaps into the sky, screaming a harrowing roar.

Mami tugs the beast's leg-tied ribbon, thrusting herself down to the ground. The beast grasps nothing, landing on the ground. The earth splinters with a cry.

It charges. Mami summons another musket and a loose ribbon. She fires. The beast tries to crush her.

She pivots, sliding under the witch's open legs. The witch turns to grab her. Mami leaps into the air, over the wrist, tying the ribbon over its hand. The dance continues. Mami dances through the monster's swipes, punches, and kicks.

One hit was death. Even a grazing blow would instantly kill her. She emptied her mind and went with the flow. Only perceive rhythm, nothing else.

Pivot, dodge, leap. Between the legs, over the shoulder, around the head, and through the arms.

Another swipe. Mami leaps backward, grasping the ribbon. "It was fun, but I have to end this. Someone's waiting for me."

The yellow ribbon turns red as a decorative chain runs through its fabric. A scarlet spider-web appears, encasing the giant in a cocoon of magical fabric. It rips into the coliseum walls as the giant is pulled in every direction. The witch cries, its body flexing its body of blades. The fabric slowly but surely begins to tear.

Mami runs forward, conjuring a ribbon in hand. She jumps.

"TIRO--!"

The metal giant stares down the barrel of a cannon.

"FINALE!"

The world turns white.

An explosion.

Mami slides onto the ground after firing her strongest attack.

The familiars, regardless of their master's fate, continue to cheer. The fact they continue to cheer causes Mami to stare at the supposed corpse of the witch.

The smoke clears.

The witch's head had been blown completely off. Steam drifts off the burnt, gnarled metal of her blast. In the open wound of its 'neck', there was something else.

A person.

A girl.

A head of white-hair and green, empty eyes.

Tendrils grasp the nameless girl, pulling her further inside.

Crunch.

Her bones break.

Crunch.

Her muscles tear.

Crunch.

Her life leaves her.

The wound closes.

"W-what?" Mami stares, bile bubbling in her throat. "What is that?"

The witch cries, tearing free from the bindings. It lands, grasping another blade from the ground.

Mami snaps to attention, conjuring another musket.
The second round begins.

Interlude End

The last thing you expected to do in a Witch Barrier was cut in line. Lines made up of bronze and stone statues that do little more than acknowledge your presence. They move slightly ever few seconds as the line advances toward the massive coliseum at its center. Winding paths intersecting with buildings made out of crumpled paper and magazine clippings. Despite being in a Witch Barrier before, this was something you could never see yourself getting used to. You follow Midori, running along the warping corridors, using the slow moving line as a guide.

"This place gives me the creeps." Sayaka says with Kyubey nestled on her shoulder. "I feel like I could get lost here for days."

"Precisely. It's a Witch Barrier." Kyubey speaks into her mind. "Witches lure humans into their labyrinths in order to feed off of their despair."

"So, wait. What happens if you go missing?"

"If you're caught by a witch, you die. It's as simple as that." Midori answers. She walks as if wading through glass.

Sayaka scoffs. "Unless a magical girl comes to save the day, right?"

"Not all of the time."

You round another block. The path opens into a large park with mannequins for its occupants. Plastic dogs float in the air, suspended by a wax rod. The fountain in the center sprinkles out white cotton for water. It was an art project brought to life before your eyes. An eerie silence permeates the park, only punctuated by the sound of clinking steel.

Midoir's hands shake.

"Midori?" You approach her.

As you walk past her, Midori fights to maintain composure. Her lips quiver and her grip tightens on the hilt of her blade. Her eyes refocus as she shakes her head. "Sorry about that." She breathes deeply. "Let's go." She runs forward.

What was that about? You exchange a look with Sayaka who shrugs in response.

The cheering cries from the coliseum echo through the barrier. Distant explosions herald the sound of battle. Midori picks up the pace, running up the stairs and into the long, dark corridor leading into the center of the coliseum.

Shattered swords lay strewn about the battlefield.

Bullet holes dot the landscape.

Mami stands alone, her clothes torn and bloody.

Why was this familiar? Why do you remember this?

"I wish I could be a magical girl just like you, but I'm weak."

Was this it? Was she going to die?

"There's nothing special about me. But, I don't think there needs to be. I've got Madoka, you know?"

She was fighting alone. Midori was here. No, that wouldn't happen. No. No, that wasn't going to happen.

"Stay here. I'm going to help her." Midori starts running forward.

"What? Wait, what about the familiars!?" Sayaka yells.

"They won't attack you!" Midori says as she jumps over the side.

You couldn't do anything but watch.

Helpless. Again.

Your heart beats in your ears.

"Tomoe, I'm here." Midori lands next to Mami, brandishing a strange black object. "Use this."

"Chiba? I thought I told you to--"

"Reprimand me later." She raises her shield. "Here it comes!"

A scream. A scream so loud your body shakes, and your ears ring.

The monster hovers over them. You don't see it run or leap. It was simply just there like impending death.

Midori's shield sparks as she barely holds ground. Steel grates on steel. Midori's feet buckle as the shield shatters.

"MIDORI!" You scream, reaching out. There was nothing you could do.

"They can't win this fight as they are now." Kyubey says.

You grit your teeth.

Mami leaps away, firing. The beast moves with reckless abandon. She avoids it, dodging and darting away.

She scrambles, guiding the witch away from Midori. She wasn't dead.

Sayaka grits her teeth. "I-I can't watch this anymore. Kyubey!"

"Momoka." The kind voice speaks to you. And, as you look to your right, a white-gloved hand rests on your shoulder. "You can do it. Reach out your hand and believe."

Reach out your hand? What did that mean? Is this the person who's been talking to you this entire time?

Your heart pounds in your ears.

You breathe deep, and …

[_] Make a contract with Kyubey to become a magical girl.

Episode 1 - 5
You reach out toward the sky, in desperation and hope that the voice in your mind wasn't a delusion. The hopes were slim that you weren't getting out of this unscathed without some sort of divine intervention, be it through a contract or the kindness of an ephemeral ghost. You had made your choice, staking Mami, Sayaka, and Midori's lives on this one miracle.

The void, the same place you had forgotten in the wake of your dreams, drifts through the timeless abyss as memories float through your mind—images that you've never witnessed, never seen, yet they were vibrant reminders of what you remember.

They play back to back as static floods your mind. You stare helplessly as a black worm bites down onto Mami's head. You look left and right, then turn to run. As you round the corner, you enter an alleyway.

Sayaka and Kyouko fight, exchanging blows. They taunt each other, leaping about with the intent to kill. "Stop!" you yell, reaching out to touch Sayaka.

Her body falls limp.

It was night.

You were above the freeway.

"What?" you look up.

Rain falls. The city lay in ruins. Stray hairs and tears cloud your vision. These weren't yours. What was going on? You turn, wading in the water to see—

The barrel of a gun.

A flash.

You collapse into the water, blood trickling down your forehead.

You were shot.

"What… is this?" you struggle to your feet. "What's going on?"

Another shift. A wasteland of blades. The same one that Mami and Midori were fighting in. The coliseum walls. They were the same, yet different. A girl, much like you, sits in the stands with Momo.

The witch had the upper hand. At that moment, you made a contract. It wasn't the wish you had decided on for yourself, but it was a wish—to be a magical girl like her, to be someone who fought for the sake of others, despite the warnings, despite the misgivings. A wish you wouldn't have made, not as you are, but maybe in another life.

The glow of the Soul Gem hung overhead. It slowly descends into your open hands, not hers.

Another shift. Another time.

Rubble lay scattered across the horizon. Nameless girls lay face down in the water, their clothes in tatters and their bodies maimed. It wasn't just magical girls, but people that couldn't be saved; each one with a name, a purpose, a wish. Each one a reminder never to lose hope.

"Momoka."

That voice.

You turn, hoping to see Madoka. Your wish is granted, but not in the way you thought.

She was Madoka, but she wasn't. Her hair hung down her back like a waterfall. She floats off the ground, wearing a white dress fit for a goddess. Her eyes glow with a golden shimmer. "It's nice to finally meet you. Face-to-face, I mean."

You stare. "So, you're the… voice?"

She smiles. "You can say that. I've been trying to talk to you for a while now."

"I heard." Your eyes go downcast. "So, what was that? Why am I seeing all of this? Why am I—"

"That's because of me."

"What?"

"I think our memories are mixing. I'm just guessing, but… I've never done anything like this before."

"Done what?"

"Eheh, um, it's kind of hard to explain… just know that I'm on your side, okay?" She scratches the back of her head.

She was Madoka. Even if she wasn't the Madoka that you knew, she was definitely the same girl you grew up with. "Yeah, don't have a lot of time as it is. So, when you said reach out, you wanted me to have this?" You raise the Soul Gem toward the other Madoka.

"Yes. It's an orphan who needs a good home."

"An orphan?"

The other Madoka forces a smile. "Yeah. She's hurting and alone. So, I brought her back home."

You look at the Soul Gem. It had a warm glow, but it was cold to the touch. "This belongs to another me, doesn't it?"

She nods.

It was impossible. This shouldn't be happening, but it was. Witches, magical girls, contracts, and now timelines. How your mind was capable of comprehending all of this probably had something to do with the older Madoka.

"If you hold her close and pray, she'll definitely help."

"Really?" You cradle the Soul Gem in your shaking hands.

"Take good care of her, Momoka." She floats closer and pats your head. "It's going to be hard, you know that, don't you?"

"Yeah." You clutch the Soul Gem. "But I've still got so many questions. I don't understand any of this. But, I don't think I need to." You say. "You're honest, and you don't do bad things… It's how Mama raised us. Well, more you than me, but…" You scratch your cheek. "I'm kind of a brat."

"I know."

"You can at least not agree with me there."

You both share a laugh and, for some reason, you feel a pain in your chest. Some part of you doesn't want to say good-bye, not even for a minute.

"We can talk later, Momo. You have a job to do now, don't you?"

A job. What were you going to do? Fight that thing with a power you don't even know how to use? The only answer to that question was probably 'yes'.

"Yeah, we'll talk later." You take a deep breath and walk past her. "Thanks for the opportunity, Sis. I won't forget this."

A solemn nod.

You spring into a run.

Fear grips your heart.

You run.

You want to turn away, you want to stop, you want to turn back.

But you run.

That monster was out there. Mami was bleeding, Midori was about to die, Sayaka was about to contract. You could turn back, drop the Soul Gem, and go.

But you run.

You had a wish.

You would always return home to those that care about you. It was only a brief moment, but your family and your new friends meant the world to you. You don't want to lose anyone and you don't want to disappear. Those thoughts spur on your resolve despite your anxiety, despite your growing fear.

The fear of losing those you love outweighs anything else.

"Alright." You hold the Soul Gem close and pray.

It shines with a golden glow.

The dream fades away, giving way to reality.

"Don't even think about making a contract!" You leap over Sayaka and into the arena below.

"What…!? Momoka? What the hell?" Sayaka stands there, ready to make a wish. "Wait!" She reaches over the side, but you were already gone.

"An Irregular?" You hear Kyubey mutter as you land.

Your casual clothes vanished, an armored dress appearing in their place. You were strangely light. Was this how Mami felt?

"Momoka?" Midori says weakly, sitting up, holding her wounded arm. "No. You didn't…!"

You grasp one of the swords in the ground and throw it straight at the goliath. It soars through the air, striking true, ripping into the back of its neck. The witch turns its attention from Midori and Mami to you.

"Ms. Kaname, what are you doing?" Mami yells out before noticing your attire. She pales.

"Buying you time to run!"

Despite the bravado, you know you don't have long. You can't do anything flashy. You can't fight for long. Even if you can use a Soul Gem, your body was still human. One mistake leads to instant death. Though, against an opponent like this, that was true for anyone.

It walks toward you, uprooting a large blade as its weapon of choice.

Don't panic. Stay focused. Don't lose heart. Don't lose hope.

It was going to be one exchange. That's all you could afford.

You had no weapon.

You had no combat experience.

Yet, here you stand.

So you…

Episode 1 - 6
You were facing down a monster that Mami couldn't kill. While not well-versed as a magical girl, a novice, you knew she was leagues above anything you were capable of. You have no combat experience, no weapons, no talent for combat outside of your feigned bravery. The gap was much too vast. Therefore, there was only one option; utilize advantages afforded only to you alone.

A silent prayer to the Soul Gem causes it to glow with an ephemeral light. Memories flood into your mind like a bursting dam. The knowledge assaults your mind as magical energy courses through your body like hot magma. Your veins burn, your vision blurs in a hazy mirage. You strengthen the body. You apply enhancements to your legs and arms. The purpose of the wish that birthed the Soul Gem was laid bare.

Mimicry.

Weapons, magic, knowledge.

The accumulated knowledge within the Soul Gem was for your use. It was as though you were wading in a river with the abyss below threatening to swallow you. You trudge through, praying, holding fast that a solution lay within its depths.

The witch dashes forward.

Search. Dig deeper. You need a weapon. You need something to defend yourself with, to bring down the monster. A projectile weapon seems to be the obvious choice.

No, not at this range. You were human, but that would spell certain death.

Your fists were an option, or a gauntlet. Same result. There would be no space between you and the enemy.

A spear. A sword-spear. The length was just right. The monster relied on its speed and power above all else. With its mad charge, it couldn't change direction. But, what if it did? Could you stake your life on that gamble? One wrong move and you were dead.

Dig deeper.

The witch raises its arm to swing.

Ten feet away.

Images of a red magical girl enter your mind in a hazy static. She smiles, carrying on, laughing with another girl. The faces were hazy. They were familiar, but not. She holds a weapon in hand. A sword. No, a cleaver. It was akin to the one that the rampaging witch called her own. Could you even create something like that? Would you have the strength to wield it?

You could fix that, but was it something you wanted to risk? Your options were minimal. Combat experience and knowledge flows into you even now. An exchange of blows with this goliath was a possibility; whether you won or lost it was another question entirely.

With this in mind, you …

[_] … mimic the cleaver from the memory, make up the difference with magical energy and strike.
[_] … create the sword-spear and gamble on the beast's trajectory. Make due as you are.
[_] … attempt to disengage and dodge. Avoid a confrontation if you can help it.

Episode 1 - 7
The beast draws closer; the selection is made. A spear. A sword-spear made to impale, to pin. Whether it succeeds or not wouldn't be your concern if you end up dying. Magic flows through your body. The image remains still in your mind. The image of a red-shaft with a silver point.

The beast swings.

Faster. You had to do this faster.

Wielding the spear wasn't enough. No, there was another method. The magical energy in your palm remains formless. You slap the ground at your feet. The magical energy ripples out in a wave of scarlet.

A rain of blood.

A spear erupts from the ground, upheaving the dirt and sand. Metal screeches against metal as it tears through the bundled swords that make of the witch's hide. The blades contort and split, piercing the flesh underneath. The hole fills with a mass of writhing tendrils and razor sharp beaks.

There, within the confines of the black mass, a limp hand.

Not a monster's hand. A lithe, pale hand.

It grasps at the air.

In the brief stint of silence, you hear a voice.

A plea.

"Help… me…"

What?

The blood that spilled wasn't just the witch's, it was a girl's.

"What did I--" You stare.

The blade completes its arc.

Crack.

It rips into the ground.

The force of the impact sends you through the air.

It was just like back then, falling listlessly through the witch's void.

The magic vanishes from your body, the armor dispersing into the wind. All but the imparted knowledge leaves as you hurl through the air.

A yellow ribbon grasps your wrist, wrenching you forward. "Ms.Kaname!"

Mami's voice pulls you from your languor.

"There's a girl. There's a girl in that witch's stomach!" You grasp Mami's shoulders. "We have to save her."

"Miss Kaname, there's--"

"She's alive! I heard her! We have to--"

Mami holds you close and leaps. You're back in the audience area, the familiar sound of the clamoring crowd filling your ears.

"Even if she is, there's no way we can defeat the witch as we are now." Mami closes her eyes. She was thinking of a solution. There had to be something that she could do.

"Tomoe, take Momoka and Sayaka and go! I'll hold it off." Midori yells as she walks forward.

"I intend to, but ... that's suicide, Chiba."

"Yeah, maybe."

"Do you want to die?"

No response.

"Are you sure about this?" Mami clenches her palms. "I can't stop you if that's the choice you want to make. But, I'm sure there will be others who will miss you."

"No." Midori grins. "All my friends are dead and gone." She shakes her head, praying to her white sword. The magical light casts a shadow, and from that ephemeral darkness, a knight steps forth. It stands over Midori as a silent protector, wielding a black blade wreathed in scarlet. "I'll try to save the girl before I get rid of the witch. That's the least I can do. You know, if I do bite it here."

Midori wants to keep fighting. There was no way she was going to survive an encounter, not with how that monster was able to regenerate.

No, this isn't what you wanted. There was no way this was happening. You had to do something.

[_] Try to convince Midori that there's no way she can defeat the monster on her own with its healing capabilities. It was suicide. It was best to regroup.
[_] Join Midori for the fight, using what you could of the powers you had at your disposal. It might not be much, but it's better than watching her die a pointless death.
[_] Ask Mami to join Midori. Between the two of them, they should be able to figure something out.

Episode 1 - End
Midori throwing her life away wasn't something you could accept. Regardless of her motive, you couldn't agree with it. Reasoning with her wasn't possible. Mami's succinct conversation was enough proof of that fact. You stare at the writhing mass of steel on the far side of the coliseum. You escaped death once. You would not be so lucky the next time. Your palms sweat. Your vision blurs. Were you going to step into the arena again?

You grasp the Soul Gem. "Mami, can you help Midori?"

"If I did, it wouldn't be for long." Mami says. "I exhausted most of my magic fighting the witch before Chiba got here."

Mami's Soul Gem glimmers with a faint radiance. Murky darkness permeates the center of the gem. It was a little under halfway spent. If she did help, she would be relegated to a supportive role. That meant either Midori or, Heaven forbid, you had to take point. The thought was enough to make you dizzy. Yeah, looking at the available resources, victory was out of the question.

That was as you are now, though. The stakes had been altered. It wasn't just killing the witch, this was about saving someone's life. Even still, you had a wish of your own to work toward. Returning home to Madoka and Momo.

"Midori! I'm going to help!" Your attire shifts to the magical armor in a flash of light. You vault over the side of the guard rail, landing right behind Midori.

"Momoka!" Sayaka reaches over the side of the wall. "What the heck are you doing? Are you nuts!?

"Probably."

"Miss Kaname, you're forcing my hand here." Mami cradles her head in her palm. With a regretful sigh, she leaps into the arena with you. Out of the corner of her eye, she spots Kyubey on Sayaka's shoulder.

"Kyubey." Mami blinks. "What are you--"

"I went to go get help since you were having trouble with the witch."

Mami sighs. "I see, so that's how Chiba and the others arrived when they did."

"Yes, that was my doing."

"I appreciate the gesture, but the circumstances have gotten rather dire." Mami pulls off her hat and makes a sweeping motion. Muskets fall in sequence around her, forming up a total of eight. "Miss Kaname, Chiba, are you ready?"

The witch roars.

"I've been waiting for this." Midori says, holding her white blade aloft. The black knight hovering over her back grips its sword with both hands. "Thanks. Momoka. Tomoe. I… I'm sorry for … well…"

"Apologies can wait, Chiba." Mami stares down the roaring witch.

You stare at the black blade. It was familiar. Where have you seen it before? Was it something you forgot to remember? Another dream, perhaps?

It was no time to be spacing out.

"Here it comes!" Mami yells.

Almost as if on cue, the witch dashes forward. The ground upheaves with each step. Dust and sand obscure her form.

Sweat drips down your back.

Midori moves forward, shield up. The looming shadow flies forward, meeting the witch head on. Sparks fly as steel grinds on steel. The ephemeral knight relents, switching places with a lunging Midori.

She misses.

The witch swings down. The looming shadow parries. Midori thrusts forward, embedding her sword into its leg.

Mami unleashes a barrage center mass. One shot. Two. Four. Bindings rip outward, grasping the witch's sword arm. The goliath grasps the sword as the arm is bound to her side. The fabric begins to fray and rip.

That was your cue. It was an opening.

Attack. Move. Go.

Why weren't you moving?

Frozen. Fear binds you in place.

Mami meets your eyes. "Chiba!" She commands.

"I got this!" Midori grips her blade and starts tearing it down straight through the leg. The metal bindings of the leg screech in protest. The rust colored blades begin to bend and contort under Midori's pressure. "Owain!"

The knight of shadow stabs its own sword into the witch's under arm. It places one foot on the ground, and rips upward.

Black blood sprinkles onto the ground.

Move. Move. Move.

Why won't you move?

You were afraid. Afraid of the witch, afraid to fight. But, the fear of losing someone else was far greater still.

Tendrils rip out from the crevice carved by Midori's blade. They rip and ungulate, lashing out at her throat. "Agh!" The beaks rip and tear her flesh. "Shit!" Owain appears at her side, wrenching her free from their grasp.

"Chiba! Fall back! I'll cover you!" Mami fires.

You had to step up. You had to do something.

Anything.

You pray for the resolve, for the strength to continue on.

The witch obviously wasn't playing fair, so why did you have to?

Dig deeper.

You venture into the ocean once more. Walking along the shallow shores, wading through the sea of possibility.

Memories coalesce.

Experiences yet lived, stories yet unheard.

You skim the foundation of what comprises the confines of the Soul Gem.

Deeper and deeper still. You venture forth, slowly wading into the cold water.

The image of the cleaver flashes in your mind. Not just the cleaver, but the story, the meaning behind it. Dig deeper. There was an answer amidst the chaos of these distorted memories. The static grows.

"I just wanted to leave it all behind, you know?" A brash voice speaks into the void. "Cut it all away. It's the past, so I don't need it, right?"

"But isn't that who you are?"

You submerge your head, the voices becoming more distinct, more clear. Find the meaning in the memory.

"Nah, not anymore. I got you guys now."

The pressure thrusts you above water. You angle down, diving deeper. Push it. Keep pushing.

"I-I don't know… I'm not too confident."

Don't lose heart. Don't lose hope.

"Come on. I told you what I wished for. Spill the beans."

There were other people depending on you.

"Well, uh, that's a secret."

Pain assaults your body. The abyss crushes you.

"Come on, Chiba. Out with it!"

You reach further, pushing back.

"W-well, I'll tell you the motive… if that's okay."

Madoka's bright smile, Momo's tears. Don't let them go to waste.

"Sure. What was it?"

You step out of the abyss.

"I wanted to be a hero."

You stand, one arm raised overhead, a cleaver in hand.

Midori stares with wide-eyes. "What?"

You rush forward, cleaver in hand. You swing into the leg once.

It wasn't the force of the blow. It wasn't a property of the weapon. It was the magic tied to its very impetus. The facet that created it.

Severance; to cut, to separate.

The leg falls off.

It hits the ground with a thud.

The witch, off-balance, pivots. It frees itself from Mami's binding. It swings.

The cleaver slashes into the witch's arm.

The wrist flies off. The hunk of steel it called a weapon slams into the ground.

The witch roars, reaching its free hand out toward you.

You swing into the open air.

Black blood flies.

Another swing. More armor flies off.

The witch regenerates enough to stand, only to be stripped of its armor and its flesh.

Then -- pain.

Searing pain.

Your head, your arms, your legs, your body. They scream in protest as magical energy flows as blood through your body. It wasn't meant for this.

It felt as though if you pushed it any further, your soul itself would shatter. Not just the Soul Gem, but your body. Conjuring a spear was one thing, but this -- this went above and beyond what you even believed yourself to be capable of.

Then, your adrenaline ceases. As the last vestige of magic leaves your body, you collapse into the ground. In the mire of your fading consciousness, your memories overlap and coalesce with other moments and other times. For an instant, it was hard to discern what were yours and what were anothers. As your eyes close, you pray that you dream your own dream and not another's nightmare.

Episode 2 - 1

A stinging sensation indistinguishable from the pain felt during the battle with the witch. No, it was worse. Much greater, in fact. Tears flow as freely as blood from an open wound. You grimace, clenching your hand to cope with the burning onslaught. You put on a brave face, but it falters with each second that passes. You resign yourself to the pain. There was no fighting the inevitable, after all. Your battle was done. It was a long and arduous battle. The hope was that you would finally receive reprieve with rest, but such was your fate.

"Ow!" You wince. "Madoka, a little softer? Please?"

"Sorry, Momo." Madoka dabs a damp cloth on your arm before wrapping it in a bandage.

Gone was the battlefield, replaced by the soft serenity of Mami's apartment. You lay in Momo's bed, covered in enough bandages to make you look the part of a mummy. Madoka sits on a chair at the bedside with an open medkit at her side.

"That's tight. That's really tight."

"We don't want it falling off." She smiles nervously.

"Man, you don't mess around. No wonder you're the nurse's aid."

"W-well, it's not really like that." Madoka closes the medkit and places it on the nightstand. "It was something no one else wanted to do, so…"

"I don't think there's any real shame in that." Finding the right words to say was hard, so you just speak your mind. "If it's a job you can take pride in, even if no one wants to do it, I think that's a good thing."

"You sound like Mama."

"Ah." You cringe. "I do, don't I?"

Madoka laughs. "At this rate, you'll have an office job before you know it."

"I would rather not." You fall back in bed, arms crossed. "I don't want a salaryman's life. Just thinking about it makes my skin crawl."

"Really? I don't think I would mind it." Madoka takes a seat on the foot of the bed. "Especially if I could come home to a loving family."

"I mean, if you put it that way… it doesn't sound so bad. But you've seen Mama come home from her meetings. She's usually black out drunk."

"Mama likes to drink to have fun. It's not really that much of a bother."

"I mean, true, it could be a lot worse." You frown. "... I dunno. Just thinking about this stuff gets me anxious."

"About the future?"

"Yeah." You look out the window. The sun dips over the horizon, casting a red glow over the glass sheen of Mitakihara. "It's getting late. We should probably be…"

"I already took care of it."

"Huh?"

"I asked Mama if we could stay the night over at a friend's place. I already went back home to get an overnight bag." Madoka points to a blue bag sitting in the corner of the room. "Mami said it was alright."

"Well, that takes care of that then." You sit up in bed. "Where's Sayaka?"

"Ah, uh, Sayaka wanted to stay the night but Mami sent her home." Madoka scratches her cheek. "There was a bit of a fight, but after seeing you were alright, she left."

Sayaka really cares. A heavy feeling stirs. It felt like a butterfly rummaging around your empty stomach. "I shouldn't fight with her so much."

"If you stopped, I think Sayaka would be more concerned."

"I guess." You sigh. "And you would be out of the job."

"Eh? From what? Breaking up your fights?"

"Yeah."

"I mean, that wouldn't be a bad thing, I don't think."

"It would be awful. If you weren't here, imagine the horrors Sayaka would inflict."

Madoka blinks. "I think you're absolving yourself of blame here, Momo."

"Me? No, never. Not at all."

Madoka falls silent. Her eyes drift between your wounds and the floor. She clasps her wrist. Something was clearly wrong. It didn't take much of a guess to figure out what that was. Her entire life had been turned upside down in the span of only a few hours. Who wouldn't react the way she is?

"I didn't like being left behind."

"I'm sorry." You say.

"It was scary, you know? Wondering if you were going to come out or not."

It was the same thing Sayaka felt, watching you vanish. It was the same thing. "It's just… how things ended up."

"I don't blame you." Madoka wipes her eyes. "I probably would've done the same thing if I was you. If I felt like I could make a difference, if I could help, I would. So, that's why I'm thinking about becoming a magical girl."

"Don't."

"How come? I'm sure I could…"

"Madoka, I was scared. I was terrified. The fact I was able to do what I did was a complete fluke." You look at the hand that held the cleaver. You clench it, feeling the grip, the weight of the magic and the fleeting memory. "I don't want you to be in the same situation."

"But I can't just sit by and do nothing."

It was how you felt watching Mami and Midori fight that monster. Feeling helpless, like there was nothing that you could do. You were able to reach out and get a miracle. Something told you the only miracle afforded to Madoka would be one granted by Kyubey. That just begs the question - why you? What made you unique? You were given the Soul Gem of another you. A you from another time, another world. You've seen the vastness of its depths. You weren't sure where the influence of the older Madoka and the other you begins and ends. It was a menagerie of fractured memories and distorted voices. "Hey, Madoka, what do you think my wish was?"

"I don't know…"

"To come back to you." You grin. "To come back home. And it was granted. Not by Kyubey, but by everyone else; Mami, Midori, and Sayaka. I still remember coming home the other day and seeing you sleeping with Takkun. You had this lazy look on your face. Think you had a bit of drool dripping too."

"Ah!" Madoka instinctually wipes her mouth. "What, really? That's so embarrassing."

"It made me happy." You reach out for Madoka's hands. "That's not something I want to lose. Not now, and not ever."

Madoka averts her gaze. "I understand, I do, but if you're out there fighting witches… then I'm not sure what I'll do."

"Then I'll just be such a bad sport that I get fired."

"What? Can you do that?"

"I dunno, it's worth a try."

"Momo." Madoka laughs.

"What? If I got this Soul Gem by a fluke, then I'm--" You stop. "Wait. What happened to the witch? What about that girl? Crap, I got so caught up in the conversation that I didn't ask!"

"Still alive." Mami says, knocking on the doorframe. "How are you feeling, Miss Kaname?"

"Ah, better, at least. I'm not dead, so that's a good thing."

"Oh, Mami. You're back."

Mami nods. "Miss Madoka, can I talk to your sister for a moment? Alone?"

"Oh, um, sure." Madoka frowns. "I'm sorry, Momo. Good luck."

Your sister exits the room with a bow.

"So… you're probably mad, Mami. I can understand that." You force a smile. "But, before that, can … you tell me what happened? I mean, with Midori and the girl inside of the witch."

"We'll get to that." Mami walks forward, taking the seat at the side of the bed. "They're both safe for now."

"That's good." You wanted to ask how the girl from inside the witch was safe. Given recent events, it wasn't entirely unbelievable that she was alive. "So, I know what I did was stupid, but…"

"Stupid? Not necessarily. Reckless fits a bit better." Mami composes herself with a breath.

"I know." You can't look her in the eye. "I know it was, but I felt like I had no other choice. If I didn't, it was going to be Sayaka."

"It doesn't matter who did it, the end result would've likely been the same." Mami crosses her legs. "Kyubey mentioned something about you being 'irregular'. So, were you hiding the fact you were a magical girl? Did you make a contract with Kyubey in the past? What's your goal?"

"No, no, and I have no clue."

Mami walks forward, grasping your hand gently. She finds the finger the Soul Gem ring sits. "There's a mark, but it's faded."

"I'm not lying." You stare. "It all just happened at once."

"For the sake of the conversation, I'll believe you for now." Mami sits down. "So you became a magical girl without contracting with Kyubey?"

"I wouldn't say 'without a contract'." You clench your hand. "There was something going on. I heard a voice calling to me, saying to 'reach out', and I did. And the next thing I knew, I was a magical girl."

"A voice? Were they trying to manipulate you?"

"I don't know." The warmth you felt from that other Madoka was genuine. At least, you wanted to believe it was. "They could be? I dunno what benefit they get from dropping a Soul Gem on my head, though."

"There could be any number of reasons." She shrugs. "They could want you to work toward a certain end, maybe? Did they give you any objectives?"

"Nothing other than 'reach out' and 'believe in yourself'."

"What a strange person." Mami frowns. "It seems you're just as confused as Kyubey and I."

"Believe me, I want answers just as much as you do. But, there's the thing…"

"Yes?"

"I don't really know what to do from here."

"That's for you to decide. Though, there's something else I wanted to discuss with you, but that can wait." Mami stands up. "Are you hungry, Miss Kaname? I just started on dinner."

"Yeah." You throw the covers off and stand up.

With that, you exit the room with Mami and …

Episode 2 - 2

Exiting the bedroom, you see Madoka sitting on a cushion, sipping some tea. Her eyes were downcast, staring longingly into the glass table's reflection. Her finger tapped the cup, as if she was waiting for some poor news regarding your fate. With a heavy heart, you venture over and sit down across from your sister.

"Sorry about that." You apologize as Mami walks past you to return to the kitchen. "Mami and I had some stuff to talk about."

"Oh, uh, I understand." Madoka says, breaking from her trance. "But, Momo, are you sure you should be moving around like that? You should be in bed."

"Well, I don't have any deep cuts or anything."

You look down, examining your body. Aside from a white shirt, sweatpants, and a few bandages, there was nothing amiss. Madoka probably dressed you when you were brought to Mami's place. It was yet another thing you were grateful for. She made arrangements to stay the night, brought the overnight bag, dressed your wounds.

"I'm not sure what I would do without you." You say, smiling.

"Huh?" Madoka stares.

"You took care of everything while I was out." You say. "Definitely saved me an earful from the folks."

"Well, we had to tell Mama and Papa where we were."

"I guess, but you got clothes from the house, dressed my wounds. That deserves praise at least, right?"

Madoka averts her gaze. "No, I didn't do anything. If anyone deserves praise, it's Sayaka, Mami and Miss Midori."

"Can't you take at least a little credit." You sigh. "Who was beside me when I woke up?"

"Me, but…"

"I just want to say that I appreciate everything you did." You lean back, taking in a deep breath. "Seeing your face when I woke up was enough to let me know that everything was going to be alright."

"Momo…"

"What?" Your face flushes a deep red. "I said something embarrassing, didn't I? Wait, I totally did. I just sounded like a sappy K-drama."

Madoka laughs.

"I'm slowly becoming a middle-aged woman." You rest your head on the table. "Not like this."

"Miss Kaname! Don't put your head on the table!" Mami yells from the kitchen. How did she know?

"Sorry!" You say, sitting at attention.

"Momo got reprimanded." Madoka says.

"Not the first time. I forgot to take my shoes off earlier today."

"Oh, you came here to see the other Momo earlier. That's right."

"Yeah. We didn't exactly hang out like you'd think. I had a bunch of questions about magical girl stuff." You sit back. It was hard to believe that this was all happening in a single day. Two days before your birthday, no less.

"Magical girls…" Madoka pauses. "Why didn't you tell me, Momo?"

"I didn't want you to worry, so…" You cast your gaze down. "But that didn't work out like I wanted."

Madoka shook her head. "No, it didn't."

"I'm sorry about keeping this from you. I didn't intend for any of this to happen. Things just got out of control… way too fast, way too soon."

Madoka closes her eyes and clutches her chest. "I want to say that it's okay, but… I don't like that you lied to me."

"That makes two of us."

"I'm serious."

"I didn't say that you weren't."

"I was really worried. What would've happened if you didn't come back?"

"I don't know." You click your tongue. "But if I died, I know I would be missed. I know that. I'm not stupid. Or, well, maybe I am, but I didn't have much of a choice."

"You didn't?"

"If I didn't do what I did, Sayaka would've definitely made a contract." You scratch your head. "So, I stopped her… kind of. She didn't have any reason to throw her life away."

"Does becoming a magical girl mean giving up your life?"

From the way that Mami and Kyouko talked, it certainly seemed like it. But, at that moment, you weren't thinking about becoming a magical girl. You were only concerned with saving those in front of you. It's just that desire ended up being answered with the power you were bestowed.

"I don't know. I asked Mami the same question, and she said there were good parts and bad."

"Sounds like Mama with her job."

"Yeah, it really does… except you don't get paid." You sigh.

"Momo." Madoka hesitates, her brow furrowed. "If this was your first fight as a magical girl, then I don't know what to do. I was thinking that I could make a contract to fight alongside you."

"Hey, listen, remember the conversation we had. I don't know how my contract differs." You try to ease her worries. While there were a lot of unknowns, it was best to be a little optimistic. "I might not have to fight at all."

"That's wishful thinking, Miss Kaname." Mami enters the room, unfastening her apron as she sets it on a hook. Kyubey sits on her shoulder, licking his paw.

"It is?" You narrow your eyes. "So, I'm basically stuck."

"Well, I wouldn't say 'stuck'. It is true that the terms of your contract may be different, especially since you weren't granted a wish." Mami sits down next to Madoka. "We'll have to see."

There were too many unknowns for you to even make a decision. The other Madoka hasn't spoken to you since you woke up. Reaching out to her was something you would have to try later.

"Your situation is certainly unique." Kyubey leaps down from Mami's shoulder, landing on the cushion next to you.

"I gathered that much." You say. "So, what do you think, Kyubey?"

"From what I have observed so far, your body doesn't handle magical energy in the same way as other magical girls."

"What do you mean?"

"How did it feel to use magic, Momoka?"

"I was constantly in pain. It felt like I was burning up."

"Ah, I see. Your body is likely rejecting the magic of your Soul Gem."

"Rejecting?" Mami crosses her arms. "Is that possible?"

"A similar phenomenon has been observed in the past." Kyubey flicks his tail. "If the power granted by a wish is rejected by a magical girl, their magic could be lost. While I don't know of any such cases resulting in physical harm, it's not outside of the realm of possibility."

Something about that explanation didn't seem right. The older Madoka referred to the Soul Gem as an 'orphan', as if it was a living thing. The memories that resonate with you from inside of the Soul Gem was enough to know that was true. If the Soul Gem was alive, then what, exactly, was a Soul Gem?

Given the name, it should be obvious.

Another soul.

Your soul.

"So, because of the wish made to get the Soul Gem, my magic is causing me pain?" You ask.

"That's one theory. It's incomplete, and requires further observation before making any critical conclusions."

"You seem a little excited, Kyubey." Mami says with a smile.

"What? No, of course not. It's simply an issue that warrants looking into." He leaps up onto Madoka's lap. She pets his head. "Madoka, have you considered my offer?"

"Um, I have, but I'll have to say no. I don't want to cause any trouble for Momo and Mami."

"Ah, that's too bad. I understand. If you ever change your mind, I'll be here."

"Thank you." Madoka picks Kyubey up.

You breathe out a sigh of relief. "Well, that's good. But, wait, does that mean I can't use magic at all?"

"Not necessarily. If your body acclimates to the use of magic, it should be possible to fight as any other magical girl would."

"So that means…"

"The more you use your Soul Gem, the easier it will be to fight."

"Right." You look at Mami.

"That actually leads into what I wanted to talk about." Mami stands up. "I was thinking that I could teach you how to use magic."

"I'd like that." You nod. "Even if it's just an excuse to come over and hang out."

"Miss Kaname." Mami narrows her eyes. "This is serious."

"Yeah, yeah, I know." You wave a hand.

"Mami!" Momo screams from the kitchen. "I think I messed up!"

"I'm coming! I'm sorry, excuse me for a moment." Mami dashes back into the kitchen in a panic.

"Hope the apartment doesn't burn down." You mumble.

"That's mean, Momo."

"Hey, just making an observation."

Madoka seems like she's doing well now. You weren't sure how long the refusal to contract would take hold, but at the very least, your mind was now more at ease. With Mami handling things with Momo, you would probably just get in the way. Midori had to be around here somewhere, and there was the girl that, against all odds, managed to be rescued. With that in mind, you …

Episode 2 - 3

As you chatted away with Madoka, the thought of the devoured girl entered your mind. Her outstretched hand, her hushed plea for help. The spear entering the witch, the rain of crimson spilling onto the ground. That had to be her blood. The moment plays itself over and over in your mind. Each second is more excruciating than the last. You look over your shoulder to the hallway across the room. The half-cracked door beckons you forth.

"Madoka, I'm going to go check on the other patient."

Your sister pushes her empty teacup to the center of the table. She stands up, patting her school uniform free of wrinkles and knots.

"I'll come with you." She says.

"Are you sure?"

"I want to check on her too."

The two of you walk toward the door, making sure not to make any noise. You pass by Mami as she scolds Momo with a wag of her finger. Part of you wanted to help her, but you had more pressing matters to attend to. You slowly nudge the cracked door open.

It was as if you were stepping into a different world. A room dyed in the red hue of the setting sun. The wall consisted of nothing but clean, glass panes. The room's artificial color struggled to stand against the flood of natural light spilling in from the windows. Whereas Momo's room looked more sensible, more mundane, this seemed like it was avant garde -- similar to the make of the school and the mall. No matter where you went, Mitakihara's architecture was inescapable.

"Hello?" You greet as you push the door open.

"Good evening." A soft voice returns your greeting.

A book clasps closed. The girl turns toward you, a soft smile pulling at her lips. It was as if the ordeal she had gone through was nothing more than a bad dream. Honestly, you were envious of her demeanor if that was the case.

"How are you feeling…?" You open up with the first question that comes to mind.

"I'm fine." She says, tucking a stray white hair behind her ear. "What about you?"

"I'll be alright." You walk inside as Madoka follows.

"Do you need anything, um…" Madoka asks, your nervous tendencies apparently being contagious.

"My name is Alexus."

"Alex…" Madoka mumbles.

"Lexi is fine too."

"Lexi then." She nods, satisfied.

"Some food would be nice." Lexi sits up in bed, setting her book aside.

"Mami's got dinner going." You sit down on the foot of her bed. "Can I sit here?"

"Go ahead. You're not bothering me."

"She's making udon. Looks like it's going to be pretty good." You say, crossing your arms. "Minus any apparent fire hazards."

"Geez." Lexi cringes. "Well, I mean, as long as no one was hurt?" Her eyes drift to Madoka for confirmation.

"I don't think so." Madoka says, looking toward the door.

"So… I have to ask, Lexi. Uh." You weren't sure if this was breaching any sort of privacy, or if it was a delicate situation, but it was something you had to know. "How are you still alive?"

"Well, it's because my heart's still beating."

"What?" You stare.

"My heart hasn't stopped, so I'm not dead."

Madoka chuckles, and you groan.

"That's not what I meant. You were inside of a monster, so--"

"I was inside of a monster?!" Lexi sits up straight. "Whoa, that's way too scary. You guys beat it up though, right?"

"No…?" You exchange glances with Madoka. "We fought it, but no, it's still out there. I think."

"Well, that sucks."

This girl was eaten by a witch -- or rather, was in the process of being eaten by a witch. Yet, she's talking to you as if nothing happened.

"Yeah, it does." Your smile slowly shifts into a frown. "I'm trying to be serious here, Lexi. What happened? If you don't remember, that's fine, but we want to help, if we can."

Lexi pushes herself to the edge of the bed. "There's nothing you can do." She says, grinning. "There's nothing really anyone can do." Her arms splay out as she collapses onto the bed.

"Why's that?" Madoka asks.

"Because you just can't. It's my problem, so I'll deal with it." Her eyes close as she basks in the sun's warm glow. "No point getting you guys involved. As soon as I get dinner, I'll be out of your hair."

This person was … certainly something. Not at all what you were expecting. What was her problem? Something that only she could deal with?

"Lexi, you're not a magical girl, are you?" You ask.

"Nope." She raises her hands. "Do you see a ring?"

"No." You frown. "But Lexi, I'm just worried."

"Hey, don't sweat it." She stretches. "You don't have to feel bad for me. I'll be fine. You probably got better shit to do than worry about me."

"Not really, I'm a teenager. What else do I have to do besides eat, sleep, and homework?" You say.

"I could think of a few things. Hanging out, finding love, finding yourself, drinking."

"W-what?" Madoka stutters.

"Forget that last one. Don't drink." Lexi points at Madoka. "You look like a good girl. See? I'm a bad influence, I'm not worth worrying about."

"You sound kind of like our Mom." You grin.

"I'm NOT that old!" Lexi slaps the bed. "I'm…" She pauses. "I'm sixteen."

"I mean, if you say so." You blink.

"I am. See, uh, what was your name?" She looks at Madoka.

"Madoka."

"See, Madoka? Bad influence. I drink and I'm underage."

"Mama drinks a lot, so it really wouldn't bother me." You say.

"Momo! Mama isn't a teenager."

"I mean, yeah, but…"

"Not buts. We shouldn't break the rules like that." Madoka reprimands you. "You shouldn't either, Lexi!"

"I mean, I don't even drink hard stuff. Not that I could get my hands on it anyway…" She mumbles. "Anyway, again, not worth worrying about."

"I want to help you." Madoka walks forward, placing her hand on Lexi's.

"Uh." Lexi stares at you with pleading eyes. "What is going on?"

"She pities you." You say with a wry smile.

"No, I don't!" Madoka shakes her head fervently. "I just want to help."

"I can tell you guys aren't just going to let this go." Lexi groans, closing her eyes. "Alright, okay, fine. I give up. What do you want to know?"
