Once the crowd cleared, you would talk to her.
You clenched your hands as your eyes darted from the crowd near Homura's desk to the floor. It shouldn't be any different from talking to a regular person.
Of course, you knew the truth. Homura was important. Too important to screw up a first meeting with. She was important to the sister at your back, and
would be important to the sister at your side.
You needed to speak to her as soon as possible.
You think back to Sayaka throwing you into the deep end. There was no plan, no recourse. It was do or die. The only help you got was some half-hearted encouragement and a piece of advice. Advice that went unheard, your ears deafened by self-doubt.
Advice that was important all the same.
You would never know until you tried.
A theory you tested just a few days after your second meeting with Kyouko had been erased. You ventured back to where it all started. Holding your head high, you ventured through the familiar scenery.
The arcade.
You went there day after day, night after night.
You went to school, trained, arcade, hunted for witches. It was routine. Each day felt longer than the last. Nothing changed, but you persevered. Determination pushes you forward.
Then the scene came forth as if it were a dream.
There, as jumpy as the day you saw her, was Kyouko dancing. The screen lit up with lights and blasted with a shrill beat. A cat meowing. Momo stood in awe, her arms hanging over the bars behind Kyouko. Mami stood with her hands on Momo's shoulders, giving a supportive smile.
You walked forward to fulfill the promise to yourself.
Whether or not things would be the same, you wouldn't know.
You greeted your old friends with a smile, ready to make new memories. Memories you didn't want erased with friends you didn't want to lose.
You didn't want the only bond you had to be as flimsy as being a magical girl. It was the same worry you had with Homura. If she was as important as you thought, then it was a needless worry. Maybe by some miracle, she would keep her memories. If her power was to turn back time, maybe it was a possibility.
Even if it was a hail mary, it was still an earnest wish.
"Well, Madoka," Sayaka says with a grin. "If you want to talk to her, now's your chance. The crowd's clearing."
"Uh, well…" Madoka hesitates, averting her eyes. "I don't want to bother her."
"I don't know, she seems kind of used to this," Sayaka frowns, placing a hand over her eyes.
"I don't think she would mind, Madoka," Hitomi offers her input.
Your sister puts her attention back onto the desk. She fidgets with her notebook, averting eye contact. She was nervous. You couldn't blame her. Her dream was probably still haunting her. Still, you couldn't stand idly by while nothing happened. You already made the decision to speak to her.
You take a deep breath.
"Well, if you won't say anything, then I guess I have to." You say, sitting up from your seat.
"M-momo?" Madoka blinks, clasping her notebook in her hand.
"Man, going up on your own? And I didn't have to push you this time," Sayaka leans back in her seat. "They grow up so fast."
"Sayaka, don't be rude," Hitomi reprimands.
"Hey, it was a compliment," Sayaka laughs.
Your heart's beat echoes in your ears. Sayaka's banter slowly fades into the background. You step forward.
One step after another.
Just walk toward Homura's desk.
She was just another person. That's all she was. Another person. Just talk to her like you would anyone else. Remember, you've been through way worse.
You've met quite a few people. Saying hello was honestly the easy part. This shouldn't be any different.
It
shouldn't be any different.
That's right.
Saying hi was easy.
But you'd inevitably have to say good-bye.
You had to leave the others behind, but you reunited. It's why you avoid them when erasing witches. You didn't want that taken away. Even if it was a slight fear, you didn't want to lose them.
You breathe in.
You take another step.
You would have to say good-bye.
No, you couldn't say good-bye.
They would never remember you to begin with.
There was nothing
to remember.
You breathe out.
You take another step.
Thoughts race forward, halting your advance.
You wouldn't lose anyone else. Not now, not ever.
"Not again," you mumble under your breath.
"Excuse me?"
The voice snaps you to attention.
"Oh!" You blink, staring at the source of the voice. "I'm sorry, I, uh… blanked out for a second."
It was Homura Akemi. Her eyes were narrowed, her head slightly tilted. Her braid was dangling in the air just over her shoulder.
"Are you alright?" She says, a slight smile on her face.
"No," you say with a frown. "No, I'm-- no, I
mean I'm fine. I'm good, actually."
"Are you sure?" she frowns.
Something about this felt off.
The Homura of the other Madoka's memory didn't have a braid, did she? It's been so long since you've seen it, you hardly remember.
"A-anyway, I'm Momoka," you say as you glance back toward your sister and your friends. Sayaka was giving you a thumbs up. Hitomi flashes you a smile and Madoka was still averting her eyes. "I wanted to welcome you to Mitakihara. If you need anything, feel free to ask."
"Actually…" Homura places a hand to her mouth. "I need to see the nurse. Do you know where her office is?"
"The nurse? Are you alright?"
"I was just discharged from the hospital," Homura says, her hands resting on her desk. "So, I need to check in with the nurse. It's nothing serious."
"Oh," your eyes go wide. Nothing serious? A heart condition sounds pretty serious. Wait, she was a magical girl, wasn't she? It was a safe assumption. Does becoming a magical girl remedy stuff like that? Another musing you would probably never get answered. You take a mental note and glance back toward Madoka.
"Oh hey, look at that," Sayaka taps Madoka on the shoulder. "The perfect job for you!"
"Ah!" Madoka jumps in her seat. "Sayaka!"
"Y-yeah," you take advantage of the opportunity. You apologize to Madoka, but not really. You thank Sayaka for the opportunity. "My sister's the nurse's assistant. She can take you."
"Your sister?" Homura looks toward the back of the classroom. "I see. You're twins?"
"Yeah."
If Homura's power was to go back in time, this would be stuff she already knows. How routine was this for her? Her expression felt genuine, as if this was the first time you were meeting. It wasn't as though you were experienced in matters of deception. It was just the feeling you got from her. It was hard to put into words.
"Okay then," Homura sits up from the desk and ventures toward Madoka. As she approaches, Madoka shrinks back in her seat, her face beet red. "Madoka, was it? Could you show me to the nurse's office?"
"O-okay" she nods her head as she struggles to maintain eye contact.
You give Sayaka a thumbs up.
She returns the gesture with a soft smile.
You were dragged into coming. Part of it was guilt, another part was concern. That, and the floating Madoka urged you, and your sister asked you to come along. You couldn't really refuse Madoka in stereo, now could you?
Madoka leads the way through the halls. Her steps are measured, checking back every few seconds to make sure that neither you nor Homura vanish into thin air. You didn't blame her, considering the labyrinthine architecture of the school.
"We're still here, Madoka," you stifle a laugh.
"I-I don't want Miss Akemi getting lost, Momo," Madoka says.
"The school is pretty big," You say, resting your hands behind your head. "What do you think, Miss Akemi?"
A few students peer at you through the transparent classroom walls. Some are interested in Homura, and some are staring at your sister and you. There were still some students at school who didn't know you were twins. You thought Sayaka did away with the last of the onlookers.
Guess not.
"Homura is fine," she says, not taking her eyes off of Madoka.
"Oh, Homura," Madoka says the name to herself. She glances back, then forward. "T-that's a really cool name. It means flame, right? I think it suits you."
"Yes," Homura's smile brightens as she moves forward to keep pace with Madoka. "And yours could be read as flower."
"Oh, yeah!" Madoka nods. "It can be. But, it's not really as cool as yours, though."
"There's no need to sell yourself short." Homura closes her eyes. "Your name is fine the way it is."
"You think so…?" Madoka scratches her cheek. "Thanks."
"No thanks needed."
"What am I watching?
" You whisper.
"
Homura is so cool." The floating Madoka echoes the sentiments of her corporeal counterpart.
"Thanks for the input."
You click your tongue.
Even though you were asked to come along, it felt like you were imposing. Madoka meant a lot to Homura, and Homura was going to be important to her. If they were going to get along, did you really need to stick around? Madoka didn't have any problems talking once she felt more comfortable.
The hallway ends and branches into the overpass connecting to the school's opposite wing. The view opens up outside, revealing the shimmering buildings on the horizon. Clouds pass by overhead, casting the hallway into a dim shadow.
Homura stops walking.
You stop.
After a moment, Madoka turns around, "Homura? Momoka? Are you coming?"
"Yes," Homura says, her eyes on the horizon. "I was just admiring the view. Sorry."
"The view?" Madoka walks over to join her. Her eyes trace along the city skyline. "Oh, wow."
"It feels like you can see the entire city from here," Homura says.
"I don't know why I never noticed before…" Madoka mumbles.
"It's only natural, I think," Homura says, her hand caressing the glass pane.
"Huh?" Madoka blinks.
"You walk this hall every day, don't you?"
"Yeah," Madoka says.
"So, it's only natural you would take it for granted." Homura's hand presses flat against the window.
Her eyes stare out at the horizon, unmoving. It was as if she was reaching for something that wasn't there. Whatever she was reaching for lied just out of reach.
"Homura?" Madoka tilts her head to the side.
"Sorry." Homura sighs, pulling her hand from the window. "Let's keep going."
Madoka nods.
You hold your tongue, despite your concerns. Letting Homura know that you had an idea about her identity might be a bad idea. She wasn't exactly what you envisioned when you thought about meeting her. Her demeanor was different than what you had been expecting. You never knew her, but from what little you did know, you were expecting someone a bit more callous. The girl in front of you just seemed a little distant, but otherwise she seemed nice.
You round another corner. Madoka shows Homura to the nurse's office. The nurse walks out to meet them. Afterward, Homura enters the room.
"I'll be out in just a second, Momo!" Madoka says as she walks inside with Homura.
You're left alone in the hallway.
Just enough time to consider your next move. How were you going to approach this? There were a lot of questions you had, but you had to focus on one thing at a time. With Homura in the picture, you could …
[_] … speak to her about what you've been doing with the other Madoka and your goals.
[_] … talk to her about the soul gem from the future, and ask about the other Momoka.
[_] … reveal that you know about her time powers and ask her about her plans in this time loop.
[_] … keep your distance and let Madoka talk to her.
[_] ... be friends with her.
