Anyways, depending on how we even exist, we may get a boost in karmic potential if we reach canon without contracting.

On the flipside, QB is incessant, at least if we had high enough karmic potential to make it worthwhile, and I wouldn't be surprised if he had ways of luring witches around to entrap us if incentivized sufficiently.

It's also best to learn the puella magi secrets and how wishes can be catastrophic BEFORE contracting, for obvious reasons, not to mention being able to ICly craft a wish to make it less outright suicidal to become a Puella Magi, long-term.

Considering we went after Midori purely based on a guess that something was wrong it would be weird to back off from the magi stuff without at least getting an idea of how it works.

As for why Momo, well, she's not a magi but in constant contact with them, so she would likely have the least amount of bias in her opinions regarding puella magi life, not to mention that having an idea of the base kit that a magi universally has cuts a lot of the "dumb" wishes, like healing or phisically related ones, also this would lead Momoka to get to know Mami and Kyoko a bit as well.

Lastly regarding contracting.....let's think a wish just in case, but we should probably wait for start of canon at least if possible (aka hoping that we don't have enough potential, at least for now, to make actively pushing Momoka to contract worthwile for the cabbit), just in case the boost has any effect on Momoka too.

Episode 1: Dreams of Tomorrow

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L1DEvzsftw

The void. A familiar place that you had forgotten, a place you never remembered to return to. A vast darkness where no light could hope to escape. Yet, a light shines through, a gentle radiance that stirs the soul. With that warm glow comes a voice. A voice, serene and fragile. As it speaks, an image comes to life in your mind. The ethereal void reshapes itself into a stage. The curtains pull back.

A story about two magical girls. In the endless expanse, atop a pile of rust and black iron, there were always two. Wind at their back, never compelled to concede. They stride forward down the long, winding path of endless conflict. Never losing hope for as long as they draw breath.

As magical girls, thinking of your own survival above others was only natural. However, these girls were different. In the pain of loss, they made a vow. A vow to never let this happen. Not again. They were never allowed rest nor surrender. What began as an honest wish eventually became a way of life.

They were always alone. They couldn't rest. Even if no one thanked them, even if no one knew, they pushed forward. Understanding was beyond those they worked to help and save. All that was left for them was their goal. Their wishes had been made, their contracts sealed. They toiled to postpone the inevitable.

They would offer help to magical girls in need while also ensuring the safety of their territories. They would fight, train, and carry on in hopes of making a better world. It was at the expense of themselves and their miracles that their hands were stained with blood. As long as they had each other, there was nothing they couldn't accomplish.

Then, two became one. In the pursuit of protecting others, the sister neglected herself. The survivor's soul did not cloud; instead, her heart hardened. What little compassion that remained vanished.

She repeated a mantra after each and every battle. A prayer to an unseen god. Her sister was watching; she was still with her. No matter how many victories, no matter how many losses, she prayed. In the battles to come, she never stopped.

Never look back. Never surrender. For her sake, I'll continue fighting.

The curtain closes with the chime of a bell. The stage vanishes into darkness. A rupturing light cleaves through the abyss.

The dream comes to an abrupt end. Your eyes adjust to the light. What was that? You couldn't make out what you were seeing, or even hearing.

"Momoka. Don't give up, okay?" That was your sister's voice.

"Momo, hey! Miss Saotome's gonna get on your butt if you don't wake up." No, that grating voice wasn't your sister's. That was Sayaka.

Drool drips into a pool on your desk. You sit up, wiping your mouth. "Sorry, sorry."

"Didn't get enough sleep, Miss Momo?" Hitomi asks.

"Haven't been sleeping well the past few days." You rub your eyes.

"Momo's been having nightmares," Madoka says.

"Wait, how did you know that? I don't think I've told you anything."

"You get restless when you're having a bad dream." Madoka massages her lower back. You definitely kicked her. Guilt floods your conscience. A habit you thought you had outgrown. Apparently not, and it was as bothersome now as it was then.

"Ahh." Your forehead falls onto the desk. "What am I, seven?"

"You definitely act like it."

"Sayaka, was I asking you?"

"I mean, nobody else is listening."

"I'm going to punch you."

"Momo, Sayaka." Madoka says. "Calm down, okay?"

"Alright." You turn your head.

"So, Hitomi, you said something about some plans after school?" Madoka says.

"Oh, yes. I wanted to take you and Miss Momo out to eat for your birthday."

"Really?" Madoka's eyes light up. "Thank you, Hitomi! So, where are we going?"

"I was thinking about our usual place at the mall, if that's okay."

"Uh, nah. If that's the plan, I think I'm good." Sayaka shoots you a glance.

"I'm with Sayaka. That's not happening. Not now."

"W-what? Did something happen?" Hitomi tilts her head.

"Yeah, you could say that." Sayaka averts her eyes.

"Then… hm." Hitomi contemplates another option. Her brow furrows, her head tilts, then she pounds her hand into her palm. "Oh! What about Récompense? We could pick up a cake there and eat it at my place."

"Well, at that point, why not just wait for the birthday party?" Sayaka laughs.

"I-I suppose that's true." Hitomi mumbles.

"I wouldn't mind." Madoka smiles. "Momo would like the extra cake. She ate both slices that Sayaka brought over, so…"

"Madoka!" You protest.

"What?"

"Don't tell them that."

"Oh, sorry. I didn't think that was a secret." Madoka laughs.

"It isn't." Sayaka corrects her. "I already knew. So, an extra cake isn't a bad idea."

"Hey, I asked you and you said it was okay." You stare at Madoka.

"Come on, getting mad at your sister isn't going to change anything." Sayaka says.

You slump down into her desk. Getting comfortable on what is essentially a diagonal slab of cushion wasn't possible. Instead, you stand up to stretch your legs. "Well, I'm going to have to pass on the cake anyway."

"You don't want to come?" Madoka asks.

"I-it's not that I don't want to come; I just have plans already."

"What?" Hitomi and Sayaka speak in unison. You weren't sure if you should take offense or not.
"I'm going over to a friend's place after school." Your cheeks flush. "I mean, is it really that weird?"

"You did mention that earlier today." Madoka says. "We could still meet up, though, couldn't we?"

"Yeah, I don't plan on sticking around for very long."

You called Momo before heading to school to make arrangements. Apparently, Mami goes to the same school as you do. The plan was to meet up after classes, and she would show you the way to her apartment. That worked out for the best, considering the countless questions that came to mind.

The conversation continued with the plans to head to the cake shop being solidified. You had your own plans, so you left the group as the final bell rang for the day.

"See you later, guys!" You wave to your sister, Sayaka, and Hitomi as they continue down the path.

You wait outside the school gate. Clouds pass by overhead, reflecting off the school's glass panels. You rub your hands together to ward off the dropping temperature. A quick glance at your phone tells you that only five minutes have elapsed. It felt longer than that, especially considering how quickly the school day had ended.

"Miss Kaname?" The girl of the hour arrives.

"Mami, right?"

"Yes. It's nice to formally meet you."

"Same to you."

"Shall we get going?"

"Yeah, lead the way."

Mitakihara Middle was only a stone's throw away from the apartment complex that Mami called home. It was still a few blocks, but it wasn't as long as the walk it took to get here this morning. Less crowded roads, less leaf crunching, and altogether more pleasant. You enter the apartment complex, following after Mami as you ascend the steps. A moment later, you're staring at the nameplate for the Tomoe Residence.

Mami reaches for her keys, but before she can even wrestle with them, the door opens. "Big Sis Mami!" Momo throws herself into Mami's arms.

"Hey." She ruffles her hair. "I brought a present."

"Momoka! Come on, come inside!"

"Ah!" You can't muster the energy to fight against her.

You hear Mami giggling. "So, how long are you staying?"

"Probably an hour, maybe more."

Hardwood lines the apartment from wall to wall. Shelves with organized books and paintings. Potted plants strewn about the house. Not a single speck of dust in sight. You walk over to the back of the room, staring out the window to the veranda. You shove your face up against it, trying to get a better view.

"Miss Kaname."

"Yeah?"

Mami points down.

"Oh, sorry!" You rip your shoes off. "Sorry, was just getting lost in… pretty much everything. This place is massive."

"It's not as big as you'd think." She smiles. "I'll get the tea brewing. Do you have a preference, Miss Kaname?"

You leave your shoes at the doorway. "No, I'll drink whatever you give me."

"Alright." Mami says, venturing into the kitchen. "Did you want anything to eat?" She pokes her head out.

"I'm meeting my sister here in a while, so I shouldn't eat anything."

"Are you sure?"

"... I'll have something small."

Mami grins, pulling her head back behind the wall.

"So, what did you want to talk about?" Momo drops down onto her cushion seat.

You join Momo at the table. "Well…"

There were a few things you wanted to discuss, but most of all…

[_] The relationship between Mami and Kyouko.

...wait. No! I must resist the call of gossip!

um.

[X] How Momo came to live here with Mami.

This probably gets us the widest spread of information, I think? Unless it's something she doesn't want to talk about...

Well, this is pretty unanimous. Going to tally votes and get to writing.

Will also include this bit of the vote as well. I don't think anyone will complain.

Episode 1 - 2

Momo was left alone in apparent isolation. The situation seemed a little too complicated for you to comprehend, but was it too sensitive a topic for a first meeting? At a glance, Momo probably would've answered whatever question you asked to the best of her ability. She was your junior, so it was best to make a conscious effort to treat her with the respect of your station. Best not to put her into a position where she's uncomfortable, lest you tempt fate.

You piano your fingers on the glass table. "So, Momo…"

"Yes?"

"What are your sisters magical girls?"

"Huh?"

The words tumble out of your mouth, out the window, and into the metaphorical abyss."I mean, how do you…?" That also wasn't what you meant. "I didn't mean it like… that. I mean to say--"

Momo, thankfully, takes the verbal failures in stride.
"Bleh! Okay!" You breathe deep. "How do you feel about your sisters being magical girls? I mean, Mami and Kyouko. You could be related, but… Wait, are you?"

Momo giggles. It was cute, but mortifying. You can talk to Sayaka just fine, and your sister, and maybe even Hitomi. Beyond that apparently you had the social acuity of a brain dead goldfish. Midori was relatively easy to get along with. Mabuyu was… well, you didn't want to think about your past failures. Why were you so nervous? Sayaka was right. You needed way more practice.

"Mami is like an older sister to me." Momo says. "She takes care of me when my sister is out on her magical girl business."

"Oh, I see. So, Kyouko's not around very much?"

"Big Sis Mami explained this to me before. Magical girls have different territories that they hunt in." Momo grabs two coasters, one red and one yellow, and sets them next to each other. "Mitakihara is Mami's territory." She taps the yellow. "And Kasamino, my hometown, is my sister's." Another tap.

"That's where Kyouko is now?"

"Yeah. She should be here later tonight, though, since it's the weekend."

"So do you get to see Kyouko a lot?"

"Yeah." Momo stacks the coasters. "A lot more than I used to."

The phrasing was enough to know that prying was off limits.

"How do you feel about them being magical girls, though? It seems pretty dangerous."

"I'm aware."

"You are?"

"Mami and my sister said that anything could happen at any time." A lonely smile pushes her cheeks apart. "That's true for anyone. But, if a magical girl dies in a barrier, no one would know."

You think back to your nightmares, to the fall, and shiver. "Yeah."

"Kyouko told me that it's not really a matter of 'if', it's a matter of 'when'." Momo whispered. "So I'm preparing myself for that day."

If you contracted, you would be putting Madoka and your family through the same exact pain. It was already something you considered, but hearing your anxieties confirmed by another was entirely different than wanton worry.

Mami's return to the living room is heralded with the clink of teacups. "What's with the long faces, you two?"

"Nothing." You gaze at your reflection on the table. A downcast gaze and a solemn smile greets you back.

"S-sorry, that's my fault, Mami." Momo bows her head as she takes a tea cup.

"It's mine, I asked a question I probably shouldn't have." You speak up.

"What sort of question would that be?" Mami says, sliding you a cup of hot tea atop the yellow coaster.

"About how she felt about you and Kyouko being magical girls."

"Ah, I see." She feigns a smile, pouring a cup of her own.

"Well, actually, if I could, Mami, how do you feel about being a magical girl?"

"Why do you ask?" Her eyes narrow.

"I mean, well… if I were to become one, I mean, I'd like to know what it's like, what to watch out for. That… kind of thing?" You say, sweat forming on your brow. Why was she looking at you like that?

"If you don't have a reason to become one, I'd advise against it."

"Really?"

"Yes." She sips some of her tea. "Simply walking away would probably be for the best. That's easier said than done, I know, but it's something you have the choice of doing. Once you become a magical girl, there's really no going back. You'll spend every day fighting for your life. It's the same thing I told Momo when she first started living with me."

"I remember a fight that Mami and I had." Momo says. "I saw how tired she was, and how she was fighting alone. I wanted to make a contract to help her, but she said no."

"The Sakura sisters are stubborn to a fault." Mami shrugs, taking another sip. "But she hasn't contracted, so it seems my advice stuck."

"It sounds like you don't like being a magical girl then." You say.

You cup your hands around the cup, blowing off some of the hot steam.

"I didn't really have much of a choice in the matter." Mami says. "It's not a matter of loving it or hating it, it's simply a way of life. Mind you, there are aspects of it I do like: saving people from witches, stopping familiars, and letting me meet people I never would have otherwise."

Mami looks at Momo with a smile.

"So that's how you met Momo?"

She nods. "Yes, through Kyouko. Momo's sister was my apprentice just a little under a year ago. She's grown so much, she doesn't really need my help anymore."

"Did you guys work well together?"

"We… had our disagreements, but ever since Momo started living with me, we've settled our differences."

Being a magical girl was difficult business. The gravity of the conversation was enough to have you reconsider the thought entirely. Leaving Madoka alone was the last thing you wanted to do.

"Hey, Momoka. Aren't you going to drink your tea? It'll get cold." Momo says.

"Oh, yeah." You take a sip.

Your eyes widen. Your tongue burns. It wasn't cool enough. It was still very hot, but also very sweet. Not bad. You wondered what kind of blend she used -- wait, no, still burns. "Ah! Okay! That was way too hot!"

"Give it a little more time to cool." Mami hands you a cool glass of water.

"Thanks." You down it in no time flat. "Phew, okay."

For the next few minutes, you sit quietly and chew on some of the peach cake that Mami had brought out. Momo and Mami talk about their day with you as an onlooker. Fighting the temptation not to eat more of the cake was a herculean task, but you manage. After another moment, Mami's eyes drift toward the clock.

"I should get going." She stands up.

"What's wrong, Mami?" You say.

"She's going hunting for witches." Momo answers.

"Yes, sorry." Mami grimaces. "I'd like to stay and entertain our guest a bit more, but duty calls."

"I know." Momo stands up, walks over and hugs Mami. "Come back safe, okay?"

"I will." Mami kisses Momo on the forehead. "Be good, okay?"

Seeing this, you …

[_] … offer to go with Mami. You still wanted to see what being a magical girl was all about.
[_] … ask Momo to join you at the cake shop with Madoka, Sayaka, and Hitomi. Leaving her alone didn't feel right
[_] … spending time with Momo here at the apartment. Finish the tea and just hang out. Seems like she could use a friend.

Also, question to those reading: I have half a mind to color code choices that lead to important branches. Would you guys prefer this, or would you rather I don't color code? The reason I say this is because character death is a very real possibility in this quest, as are bad ends, so just wanting to be transparent here.

I do like flag posting and hints, if picking something that seems nice or interesting is actually just DEATH.

Also, I wouldn't mind you guys picking DEATH options for bad ends because that basically just makes it additional content rather than a punishment. Those posts would likely be longer, too. lmao

Edit: I placed some flags on the above choices.

Oh that's nice. Maybe a little too easy lol. But hey I'm not against tailoring our experience so specifically. Might not be someone else's cup of tea though.
Hm, yeah, you're right. Let me take another crack at it.

Color Code: Red choices mean possible bad end but can lead to a divergence in plot or path for better or worse, yellow choices mean possible event or bond up.

Eg. Red choices are risky, depending on what choices are made after, but the effects are greater. Yellow choices are safe bet most of the time, but simply sticking with yellow choices will likely end up going bad in the long run.

This seems better since it doesn't give away everything, and it still gives needed info.
