Let's Play Every Final Fantasy Game In Order Of Release [Now Finished: Final Fantasy Tactics]

Hmmm.

Spirits Within premiere: July 2, 2001
FFX release date: July 19, 2001

Alright. After FFIX and before we move to FFX, we will do a Spirits Within Special Feature.

I apologize to everyone, but some suffering is necessary.

Actually legit excited for this, because I'm firmly in the camp of that movie being underrated.

Y'know when we get there in like three years.

Blergh, had to go figure out what I was thinking. I was vaguely remembering 20 years of rants about the Special Editions. I thought I remembered changes to some scenes screwing up the timing of the music to the action, but my memory is mostly deceiving me. The addition of Vader's shuttle landing during the Bespin escape does insert his theme into that part of the soundtrack at kind of an awkward spot, but it's really not the same thing.

This is happening literally as he is riding the bike; he's driving, and the screen goes white, Aerith's Theme starts playing, and he is in a field of flowers with her.

I'm realizing this explains a scene in this fic where Cloud is on his bike when he receives a telepathic phone call from Aerith and proceeds to hit a truck and then wake up in the hospital because driving and texting is even worse when it's medium channeling.

This is retroactively so fucking funny to me. That author clearly had Opinions on AC. (Although to be fair, it seems impossible to consume AC and not have some form of Opinion on it.)

Then we get a long shot of Cloud's phone sinking into the water which is a direct visual parallel to Aerith's White Materia doing the same in around the same place, and during which we get to hear all the voice mail left by the cast of the game trying to reach out to Cloud.

You have to admire the sheer writerly balls to place your promotional product on narrative par with the thing that saved the entire planet.

No Omi, it really isn't.

I'll buy you a PS2 and a copy of Dirge of Cerberus, fucker, don't you test me.
How expensive would a ps2 even be these days? Because while I'd expect Dirge to be cheap (on account of No demand), I can see the ps2 as being potentially expensive.

The main default of FF : Spirits Within is to have the name FF in this title. Suppress this, and you have an OK movie, which has brought some interesting things in cinema.

I'd even say that taking the FF in the title in consideration or not is almost irrelevant, given how every game in the series have done more and more their own thing.

I'm more thinking that Omi already suffered through AC and it went on longer than he thought, so I don't want to necessarily add to that if the format just doesn't quite fit.

If he's still willing to though… we'll maybe it'll go better.

Under the FF name, Spirits Within is baffling. Without the FF name, Spirits Within is so stunningly unremarkable I saw it again today and can still barely remember it.

There are ideas to Spirits Within I think could be adapted to a Final Fantasy game quite well, but so are some ideas in Mystic Quest. But the film was more a tech demo than anything else.

can i spoil Mystic Quest? thats not getting included, right?

i think that having every monster include 2-4 damaged forms was a really cool idea.

That was always neat, especially if it was some boss monster that was kind of a slog to fight. A visible indicator let you know that you were at least making progress in the fight.

I mean, Dirge does star the coolest gun (and also Vincent), how bad could it be, really? Perhaps it's time for reevaluation.

Whilst a failure on essentially every level a game can fail, and as a narrative existence that actually makes FF7 worse retroactively, it at least does give us some backstory that makes the Lucrecia/Vincent relationship very clear in a very funny way.

Namely that Vincent was not in fact cucked by Hojo of all people, but rather he was simping (and still is) over a woman who was at least 20% as evil as Hojo with less greasy hair.

It makes it clear that she went into the relationship with Hojo for the explicit purpose of having a child that she could experiment on. She wasn't as gung-ho about it as Hojo was, and did have to be persuaded...but the argument that won her over was 'but don't you want to see what happens when you shove Jenova cells into a baby?' and her answer was yes. She also did experiments on Vincent of course.

Lucrecia and Vincent's story is just hilarious if you ignore how the story treats them and actually look at what happens.

Lucrecia needed to conceived the baby before she thought about how wrong it was to give him to Shinra and Vincent has simped/whitewashed the same woman for literal decades.

Not entirely true. I think the first level was, overall, a success. Really selling the fear and terror of an attack by unknown aggressors on a peaceful town full of innocent civilians. That it is a place called Kalm of all things just ads to it.

Really aided by the desperation motif in the track of said level, which IMO elevates it:

That's about it, though. Well, that and the banter with Yuffie is gold.

It is 1997. Final Fantasy VII has just been released. Yuffie is best girl.

It is 2005. Final Fantasy VII Advent Children has just been released. Yuffie is best girl.

It is 2006. Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII has just been released. Yuffie is best girl.

It is 2007. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII has just been released. Yuffie is best girl.

I ain't played Final Fantasy VII Remake Integrade, but I do know one thing: Most certainly, Yuffie is Best Girl.

I only found out from somebody mentioning it in the opening of their From the New World lets play.

.....

...I...

....what....?

Goddammit...
...oh. That fucking sucks. The man deserved better.
Yeah, he really did deserve better. That was... yeah.
I just want people to suffer for my entertainment. Is that so wrong?
I'd say some people suffered enough, thank you, no need to bring in more suffering.

You monster.
