Let's Jump to It! [Jumpchain Quest]

Alternatively, Hogwarts has a library.
True, but keep in mind that we are still technically a first-year, and uncomfortable questions will be asked if we check out advanced materials. Imagine for a second that you're a librarian, and a second grader walked up to your desk and asked where the books on advanced quantum mechanics are. Buying the books has much the same problems, but it's slightly better because it's easier to get Grandma to not give a damn than school admin.

[] Easy Charms for the Young Witch by Linda Lamont (No matter where you are, first impressions are important; these simple cosmetic charms will help her look good with little work [Raises Hermione's 'Appearance' rating, ???]

Keeping in mind a lot of Hermione's friendship issues is that she's informed to look rather messy owing to not spending much time on appearance.

Not sure if this would make it convenient for her to become approachable, make personal grooming nerdy enough for her by tying it to spells, or backfire by being a little tactless suggesting she needs them(also the law bars her from practicing these at home).
[] Wizarding Families of the 20th Century by Griselda Greengrass (It's important to know who the big players are, so you can avoid stepping on their toes if nothing else) [Raises Hermione's 'Social: Pureblooded Society' skill, ???]

This on the other hand would probably let her know about the pureblood movement.

Which might let her know to avoid missteps, or as we've seen with Umbridge and the SPEW in canon...go out of her way to provoke known supremacists.
[] Wizarding Traditions by Amanda Dickey (One thing that most muggleborn neglect to take into account is that they're stepping into a different culture, this should help) [Raises Hermione's 'Wizarding Culture' skill, ???]
[] Guarding the Mind by Gary Mason (Considering how easy it is to look into others' minds with a bit of training, it might be best for any friends of yours to be able to protect theirs) [Hermione gains 'Occulmency' skill, ???]

Can't go wrong picks on the other hand....
[] Magical Machines by Agatha Bidyne (a book on the more modern magical marvels like the Wizarding Wireless and the Knight Bus.) [Raises 'Magitech']

Modern magic. Well in thread interest domain I think, and won't be taught by either traditional or old relatives/curriculum.
[] Snakes and Sorcerers: Parseltongues Throughout History by Eliot Kaan (You're a parseltongue, why not discover more?) [???]

Main utility is figuring out the secret of the Chamber of Secrets.
[] Broken Physics by Thaddius White (a book on spell creation focused mainly on charms) [bonus to spell creation]

In thread interests. Synergy with the magitech option too.

Is structural analysis a charm based spell? Can we use it examine overall health of body and any parasitic soul shards?

Also, @Jack of Olives, now that we don't have metaknowledge, how much do we know about our circumstance? Is it "I know I'm in a fictional universe of some sort but I don't know what it's about", "I don't remember the specifics, but I do remember...", or is it "I don't know a thing about the jumpchain until I get out"?
The first one.

Ya would need to repost it anyway since Jack count votes only from the post where he annouce that votes are open.

Voting is now open!

Edit: No plans have been put forth, so just vote normally.

Out of curiosity, why do people like this? I've noticed that it was quite popular in the discussion, but I can't really see why.

We have roughly pre-first year hogwarts student level of understanding of local magic and layperson understanding of mechanics. Consequently, I am not all that worried about advanced stuff; we won't be asking for books on local magical quantum physics equivalent because we have four to three years of catching up to do before they are actually useful to us, and by then Vivian is simply a prodigy doing some advanced reading.

Broadly the same applies for mundane science, actually. Speedrunning for magitech books before acquiring any kind of tech knowledge is a little on the hasty side.

I'm having a bit of a hard time understanding how the rolls seem to work here, with the additional rolls and yet the results aren't on the results but sorta are?

Honestly, I'm trying out a crit-system I've seen used for high-powered games. Basically, every time a roll ends with 100+ you subtract 100 roll another d100, add that to the total, and keep going until you stop. Success comes in degrees depending on how well you do.

Like I said, I'm trying it out. If it ends up not working, I'll probably switch to something else.

Ahhhhhhhhh

Ok now it's making more sense to me

You forgot to put an "X" in your vote options, by the way; they won't be counted by the tally system as they are right now.

Also, why the appearance option, if you don't mind me asking?

@Prospalz, can you poke @RedAlert about their vote's formatting? I have a feeling I might have been ignore listed by a few people in this thread, so it might be best if somebody else lets them know about the issue to make sure they can get their vote counted.

Edit: yes, I know this is double posting. I'd delete the previous post but people have already been pinged and that's a bad idea.

Out of curiosity, why do people like this? I've noticed that it was quite popular in the discussion, but I can't really see why.
For most people, physical appearance has a lot of subtle effects that help out in day to day life. As shallow as it sounds, knowing that you look good can be a major confidence boost for a person, and people are generally inclined to think well of attractive/well-groomed individuals. There have been a lot of psychological studies done on both of these topics, but it basically boils down to quirks of human psychology.

While I didn't really go into it in my update, Vivian has enough social skills to notice that Hermione wasn't the type to instinctively understand that kind of of social nuance, so is considering the book as a way to give her a bit of a push.

To Quote veekie:

Take the dance in canon.
Harry and Ron shoved their foot far up their mouth when she finally did bother.

"Oh you're a girl"
They more or less got along with her as "one of the guys"
