How about Caverns and Oni. :V:V:V

With credit to Randall Munroe.

However, while I veto the option. This did come out of it:
---------------------------------------------------------
"Sora, you can't just assassinate the king"

"Why not? that's literally on my character sheet. 'Assassin'."

"Because it's evil!"

"If you'll note my True Neutral character type..."

"No, assassinating the King is evil, he's been nothing but helpful to you"

"Which is why he's clearly up to something, better to assassinate him now before he betrays us."

"Give me your sheet"
-------------------------------

"You want to what exactly?"

"I want to play, an awakened Chipmunk with the Shadow Fel template."

"Izu no."

"Izu yes!"
------------------

"So I think that kills your monster...."

"How did you get 10d100 damage out of one spell?"

"Well...."

"Kyoko, give me your sheet, there's no way that's legal."

"RAW says there's no rule against it"

"Well I say there is"

"Show me in the rules!"
-------------------

"And so tragically broken from my lover I---"

"Yukiko, I love you, but you're just going out of the village, you do not need a small short story to describe that."

"But it's good roleplaying!"

"We've been at this for an hour and haven't even gotten to the first encounter yet!"

"Fine..."
-------------------

And that's how Megumi's team would play D&D

I wouldn't say terrible, but very goal oriented.
Edit: Okay we have a five way tie with one vote each. Can someone fix that please?

  • [x] Agree to a Shogi match to determine who leads (Pro: Happier Sora and Yukiko, Con: You don't actually know how to play Shogi. Winning is a toss up)

-[X] Ask Isawa Kyoko to Champion you with the argument that any leader knows when to use the right appliance of force.
[X] Suggest you attend some recitals
[X] Suggest you go out drinking
[x] Suggest that you try to arrange some sort of ball game against another team. It doesn't have to be a significant tournament, but something to get the blood pumping. It would let the team work together as a team, let Sora get some experience leading us all, and let Kyoko burn off some of that energy.
-[x] Suggest that you be the one to tell everyone when you go back in, acknowledging that Sora had graciously allowed your suggestion. It might help mollify Kyoko a bit.

Actually three way tie as you've included two votes from the last update in there.

Well when in doubt Sirroco. I guess this is kinda arguing for the tournament?

I have got to remember how the tally system works.

Meh, I'll change my vote.

This'll do.

Arc V:Month V: It all worked out
---Plan Sirrocco

You consider Kyoko for a moment, and then everyone else. Everyone on the team is reasonably athletic, with the possible exception of yourself. It's not like you haven't been trying to get into shape or anything, you just had other things to do rather than learn how to do callisthenics and gymnastics. Yes, that's why, and definitely not because you hate climbing.

In the end, the thing that will keep Kyoko most engaged is something that can keep up with her intellectually, or make use of her seemingly endless energy. While everyone on the team is smart enough for the average samurai, no one is at Kyoko's level. Anything that would keep her mind engaged would leave the rest of you in the dust.

So it turns back to the kemari game. It fills all the requirements, except Sora does not want to do that.
However, she did ask.

You speak carefully,
"Isawa-sama is restless, while the rest of us could go to something such as theatre, or a recital and enjoy ourselves, she would be bored very quickly. Therefore it seems to me that an activity to bond us should include something based around using that energy. It doesn't have to be the tournament, but playing a sport together is the best option I feel."

Sora nods.
"I understand, at the same time, that raises other questions. Its one thing to meet at a play another to play on a team together

For a moment you blink trying to figure out her point.
The weakness of the Scorpion, they cannot trust.

They cannot...trust, trust that things are safe. Trust that there are no enemies...

"Bayushi-sama, you think the enemy is still in the city?" You ask quietly.

"I do"

Well that puts a lot of things into perspective, why Sora wants to play everything close to her chest, why she doesn't want the tournament to be an activity. Why she wants to keep it to things everyone goes to rather than something with more investment. The four of you spending time is one thing, but Kyoko isn't attached to you, and while you can play off being dragged to things by her. The others have no real reason to hang out with her. They only hang out with you because you're on the same squad, at least as far as anyone knows.

Ugh, there has to be a simple solution. But it's not coming to you.

"What would you do then Bayushi-sama?"

Sora says nothing for a moment before shrugging slightly.
"It's obvious isn't it? If we can't play another team for fear of discovery, then we play ourselves"

You blink, and for a moment, you want to slap your face. In hindsight it is obvious, two on two team matches with a referee solves most of your problems. You bringing Kyoko would be rude, but again ronin.

"Very well Bayushi-sama, I will inform Isawa-sama of this then, and make sure she's there."

"Thank you Megumi-san." Sora says.

You know that for a dismissal and go to talk to Kyoko. While that conversation is somewhat tense, as Kyoko feels somewhat betrayed by your refusal to ensure your victory, you explain your reasons and she reluctantly accepts that you made the right decision. In the end though she still prefers to be your team mate whenever you guys play kemari.

The rest of the month goes fairly smoothly, dividing your time between team meetings where you learn the strengths of everyone and their weaknesses, work, training and playing against each other. Currently Izu is the champion of Kemari, all four of you are determined to over throw him.

However, while you got to know everyone somewhat better, you found yourself spending the most time with...

[] Bayushi Sora
[] Iuchi Yukiko
[] Isawa Kyoko
[] Togashi Izu
[] Write in. (May not choose Akodo Tsukiko or Moshi Naeko)

(Sorry for the relative shortness of this one, but there wasn't much to say, you had a decent argument, and Sora is trying to play nice in her own way. This vote will move you to month six)

[X] Isawa Kyoko

To pull her in closer. She's... the least committed of us. Sora is Scorpion, and will understand (as long as we continue to be appropriately respectful and obedient, which we will).
I was trying to keep things neutral, but I can see your point.

I'll think a bit more before I change anything, anyway.

I'm with Sirocco, I don't think there will be any real repercussions for not picking Kyoko, however it just makes the most sense that we'd hang around her to make her interact with the other members.
[X] Isawa Kyoko

Arc V: Month Six: The Phoenix Alights
-Isawa Kyoko

It wasn't odd in retrospect that you would end up spending most of your time with Kyoko. While you were friendly enough with Izu and Yukiko, and Sora had graduated to 'person I'm willing to consider acceptable. You weren't that close to any of them, so Kyoko it was.

Which is why as, the days counted down towards the departure and you tried to gain just a little more flexibility, just a little more ability to talk, just a little deeper understanding of yourself. That you find yourself completely nonplussed when Kyoko walks into the room and then dumps a bucket of water on you. Thankfully you don't scream like a drowned cat, but you are quite cold now.

"No more, no more void." She says firmly.

"Isawa-sama, I have cultivated my understanding for a while now, what is the meaning of this?" You ask.

Not demand, never demand something of your superior even if she is a friend.

"Arrogance? No wilful ignorance." Kyoko mutters to herself.

You raise an eyebrow at that, a single concession to the confusion you feel.
"Isawa-sama make yourself clear please."

Kyoko puts the bucket down.
"Told you body was breaking down yes?"

"Hai?" You say.

Kyoko waves her hands around in circles.
"Void training make worse. Elements in balance then balancing void matters not, your chi is not in balance. Kill quicker."

After a few moments, you process that. Delving deeper into the void which you've been doing for a while now. Studying koans, practising tea ceremony, spending time in Reika's forge, all of it to delve deeper into the paradox that is the Void. Yet, according to Kyoko that was killing you, you had no real reason to doubt her, so you're willing to accept that. However, at the same time, could you really stop?
No, there was too much on the line, and the void held a truth, a power about it, that if it could save Princess Ayako, then you had to try and understand it.

"...Isawa-sama, I understand your meaning, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make." You say.

Kyoko snorts.
"Foolish"

Well Grandmother always did say you had that air about you...
Had? Child you still do.
Yes Grandmother.

You respond.
"Aye Isawa-sama, but given the stakes, how can I justify holding on to a life that might not even happen?"

Kyoko's angry on lessens, as she looks at you.

"Do not want to lose a friend." she says softly.

That brings you up slightly short. Put it like that, and you can't blame her for trying to stop you. Anymore than you'd blame Yukiko stopping Izu from punching a boulder with a broken hand, or Reika from telling Toshiro to rest. No, you can't ignore Kyoko's worry, what kind of friend does that?

You bow to her.
"....Hai Isawa-sama. If there's another way to do this, without harming myself, tell me."

Kyoko pauses for a moment.
"Need calculations."

You did not see her for a week and a half after that. You decide to ease off on the void training for a while, focusing more on your stamina, to the point where you can walk up and down the Toriyama District five times before getting tired.

The next time you see her, you're resting on a bench at the bottom of the hill. Naturally she surprises you when you were drinking the water you brought...and now your kimono is wet, again.

"Isawa-sama!" You say bowing and communicating your annoyance in a respectful way.

"Have solution! Need you to come with me" Kyoko says without preamble.

You bite back a snarky response, and follow her as you run after her. At least you're getting your training in today you suppose. Fortunately, while Kyoko is faster than any shugenja should be, she's not exactly filled to the brim with stamina, not like you (okay a little like you were four months ago). Kyoko slows down and you catch up with her.

"Isawa-sama, what solution?"

Kyoko starts as if she din't expect you to ask yet, but answers:
"To void destroying body. Body too malleable, what is always with you and not malleable? Sword, will use sword to bring peace. Like always wanted."

"How high a chance does this ritual have?"

"Am...mostly sure will work." She says.

You frown at that. Mostly sure isn't exactly good odds given what you're gambling with...

[] Tell Kyoko that mostly isn't good enough
[] Go through with the ritual

Well its not like it back fired last time and she did say that she doesn't want to lose a friend so she's probably already weighed the risks.

Erm?
Body too malleable?
This sentence is a struggle and the fact that that is the only obvious mistake I can see is not helping my understanding.

I should really stop editing these late at night. But yes Too is correct.

This strikes as an extremly bad idea and par to course for the Phoenix and their string of bad ideas.
