I think Togashi Izu is the best of the options discussed so far however there are two we haven't at all.
[] Akodo Tsukiko: (Unlocks other options, Combat Focused)
I want to vote for her, call it a gut feeling, except we have so little interaction with her.
[] Moshi Naeko : (Unlocks other options, Court Focused)
Our boss ought to be an obvious choice. However... I'm really concerned by how easily is was willing to let Yasuki asshole off the hook.

[X] Togashi Izu (Tatooed Monk: Excellent Combatant, Unorthodox Problem Solving)

We do really want a fighter
Tanako is also a fighter, for what that's worth

On the other hand, IC? we're kind of hot for Izu's bod, if I recall correctly. We certainly admired him up close and personal while he was carrying us to the healer. If we have two slots left, I think that bringing both of them would be worthwhile, and if we're doing that, then I could definitely see us pulling Izu in early and procrastinating on the one who wants us dead.

Also worth noting that Tanako is going to be in heavy training regardless. The issue there is that we don't know if or when she'll get approached by the enemy.

[X] Togashi Izu (Tatooed Monk: Excellent Combatant, Unorthodox Problem Solving)

all else being equal, vote IC.

Ok, if everybody's going this way, I'll back it.

We'll get at least one more chance, anyway.

Arc V: Month Two: The Lonely Monk
--Togashi Izu

The enigmatic Izu, an Ise Zumi who was...okay a terrible monk. He drank, he flirted, he got more action than you did...but he had a good heart you think, somewhere under that ironic exterior of his. Perhaps more importantly from a callous point of view, he could punch through stone with his bare hands and had a lot latitude in what he could and could not do.

That a part of you admired his rippling physique, and green eyes was neither here nor there. You didn't know him well, but you had a month to figure that out right? With that thought in mind you turn over and go to sleep.

--------------
One week later

The sounds of music fill the air, as the smell of fried food makes you way more hungry than you should be. You're sitting in a booth at the 'Iron Mountain Bar' it promises the complete Crab experience for the low low price of a couple of zeni. You sip what claims to be 'authentic Cherry Blossom style Sake' if this is authentic you understand why the Crane burned that place down back in the century of chaos.

Oh you can't be too upset, sure the whole rocky pillars look doesn't work for you, but the food is filling, and the sake gets you drunk and you haven't wanted to take the biwa player's weapon and tried to beat him to death with it. Not like you almost did in the last bar you hung out with Izu in. In your defence the man was trying to murder the concept of music.

Speaking of, the man sits down across from you again, his face a little red from the handprint.

"Togashi-sama, are you alright?"

"Kuni-san apparently just got betrothed, alas." He says easily.

You nod, and take more of that sake. It's always the same with him, after the shift is over, he goes out and attempts to persuade someone into his bed. Never you, because mixing duty with pleasure never ends well according to him. But there's a sort of desperation there, that you can't quite figure out. Leaving aside that monks aren't supposed to be sleeping around, it's not like he couldn't get a lover if he wanted to. So why a different one every night?

"Megumi-san, you look thoughtful" Izu says.

"Even a ronin can think Togashi-sama." You say placing down your drink

"So can samurai but most of us don't." He replies with a smile.

"Shame about Kuni-san." You say sympathetically.

He shrugs. "I'll manage somehow. What of you, does no one in this establishment tickle your fancy?"

You almost sputter.
"Tickle my fancy?"

Izu looks guiless as he answers.
"Is that not a thing people say?"

"Not outside pillowbooks." You manage.

He gives a teasing grin.
"Megumi-san, I had no idea your tastes ran that way."

You frown.
"Ah you're trying to make me lose my train of thought."

"Is it working?" He asks.

You shake your head.
"No"

"One step on the road to enlightenment for you then." He says easily

"Well, one day I'll walk it...." you agree.

Izu sips his own sake.
"Question?"

Well now's your chance to figure him out. So you ask.

"Forgive me for the candour...but I...why this? All the Dragon I met were more..."

"Controlled? Reserved? Not out drinking and whoring everynight?" He finishes for you.

You wince internally.
"I was going to say more higher minded but that works I guess"

Izu looks down at the alcohol in his cup.
"I gave up on that a long time ago...would retire but there's no where else for me. Can't exactly become a monk when I'm already a monk."

A nod from you.
"I can see how that would be awkward."

"Alright, my turn." he says suddenly.

"Your turn?"

"You got to be candid, now's mine. If you could go back, and change your past, would you?"

[] "Yes"
[] "No"

"Perhaps that's why we can't." Izu downs his cup and rises up.
"Let's see about that new woman who just walked in..." He mutters

Well that was just odd

-------
One Week Later

Training is brutal with the hang overs you're starting to nurse, but Izu still takes you out fairly regularly. So as your limbs feel like lead and Jubei yells at you, you realize the beatings will continue until morale improves. Still as you again try to make your way through the rope maze without touching a single rope, last night sticks with you.

One for just how much you drank, two because that's the first time you saw Izu actually run away from a woman. She was a scorpion woman, a Soshi. (Because that's what his tastes were this week) You were prepared to watch him go home with her until suddenly, he came back and dragged you out of the bar, leaving the poor Soshi greatly confused. You went to a different bar, drank enough shochu to make you regret existing, and it all got hazy after that.

What was that? You'd see Izu hit on Matsu, for Benten-no-kami's sake so why did that Soshi spook him so? Sure she was pretty, but that shouldn't have been a problem.

"Megumi, someone's here to see you." Jubei calls out.

You gently extract yourself from the rope maze, (only half of your work out kimono is covered in paint today, progress!) and make your way towards the front of the shrine. There Izu is standing looking anxious.

Wait what?

You bow. "Togashi-sama."

"Megumi-san" He says bowing back.

"Can we talk?" He asks.

You look back at Jubei who nods.
"For a while Togashi-sama."

"Walk with me." He commands, you fall into step beside him.

Slowly you climb your way to the top of Toriyama Ward, the temple of the Jade Sun glistening in the morning light.
He's been silent the entire time.

You let out a breath of air, thank the kami that you've gained better stamina. You don't know what Izu wants but you're prepared to wait.

"So about last night..." He begins. Stops, and looks up.

"No remember that question about changing your past?"

"Hai, what of it?" You ask.

"What if you saw your past staring you in the face, how would you overcome it?" He asks.

"Is this about that Soshi?" You ask in turn.

Izu sighs running his hand through non-existent hair.
"Hai...it probably doesn't surprise you, that I had a lover once."

No, no it doesn't.

He continues out in a rush.
"She was a monk like me, we didn't mean to fall in love but it happened, we were happy, wanted to marry, you can retire from being a monk, you just...have to have a reason, we'd be monks of Benten-no-kami, or that was the plan."

"...she died?" You ask cautiously.

Izu shrugs.
"I don't know, she was going to go to court in the south to serve as an advisor for a Kitsuki...she never came back. And the Kitsuki himself didn't know what happened."

"Oh..." You say.

Well that's almost worse than having your lover die now isn't it? No sense of closure, nothing, just emptiness...that explained a lot.

Izu takes that prompt to continue.
"...and last night I saw the spitting image of her, her twin, but she didn't recognize me...I asked her about her family, she admitted to a twin...but I know the Scorpions have a thing about triplets..."

"Togashi-sama..." you begin.

He cuts you off.
"Izu, it's Izu if I'm desperate enough to talk to you about this"

Filing away that particular surprise, you ask.
"I'm honoured....but what do you want me to say?"

"I could press, I could try again with that Soshi, I could change my past...but that isn't fair to her is it? I guess...I know you've lost someone you love too. Would you if confronted by that love, try to grasp it again...or would you let it go and move on?" He asks.

What do you answer?

[X] "My past, my love, that changed my life. No matter what happened as a result, I refuse to say that relationship was wrong. Perhaps the way I acted within that relationship was wrong, but the path I lived has brought me here, and, fallen or not, this is where I belong."

After all, we're looking at saving an Imperial Princess, the Heir, from traitors and mystical mind stuff. As we were, we would have never come anywhere near events of such signifigance.

[X] I would like to. But I'm worried I'd do the same thing again.
-[X] Benten no Kami is sometimes dutys greatest enemy.

[X] Trying is wrong. Go ahead and speak to her by all means if you love her then fine. But if you don't, then don't try and make yourself love her, that sounds like it would not end well.

I... don't see us regretting the experience. How could we make ourselves regret him? At the same time, the life we have now is the life we have now.

[x] No.

[x] What's past is done, and regret is one of the great sins. Even when we take great loss, recovery is in moving on, rather than moving backwards. Seek to know, if it will help you heal this wound, but do not try to recreate the past.

You breathe for a moment. The city is busily going through it's day, it's never quite dawned on you on how this city is so alive despite it's origins. Yet, your mind turns from that quickly to answer Izu's question.

"You asked me a while ago Izu-san if I would change the past. I told you no."

"You did" He says with a nod.

"My past, my love, that changed my life. No matter what happened as a result, I refuse to say that relationship was wrong. Perhaps the way I acted within that relationship was wrong, but the path I lived has brought me here, and, fallen or not, this is where I belong. How could I change that?" You ask.

Izu doesn't seem convinced.
"But...."

You hold up a hand.
"Izu-san, please forgive me but let me finish. What's past is done, and regret is one of the great sins. Even when we take great loss, recovery is in moving on, rather than moving backwards. Seek to know, if it will help you heal this wound, but do not try to recreate the past. Trying to do that is wrong. Go ahead and speak to her by all means if you love her then fine. But if you don't, then don't try and make yourself love her, that will not end well."

And there it is, isn't it? You couldn't recreate the past if you tried, and even if Katsuie was to come up this mountain and open his arms to you...you couldn't go to him. Your heart would ache, and limbs tremble with need for him, you know that it would. But, you have sworn an oath to do something far greater than comfort your heart. Katsuie would never love a woman who could abandon such a duty...and you'd never love a man who could do that. So you have to move on, to press forward, to let the love you share stay a memory. A memory of joy and sorrow, yet one you would not give up for anything.

Izu looks down at the city as he takes in your words.
"You really wouldn't take him back would you?" He asks, seemingly amazed.

"Our paths have parted Izu-san, and while yes the memory of that parting is painful...its not something I would change. I will not taint the love we shared with sin." You say softly.

"What kind of monk is taking advice for these things from a ronin?"

"I'm told a bad one" You answer.

He chuckles.
"He might turn things around"

"He might" You agree.

"I'm going to go talk to that Soshi...after that, we can talk about why you're training so hard." He says.

How had he noticed?
Togashi was probably the answer. However, that was probably going to be the best time to recruit him. At least assuming things went well.

"Well if you insist Izu-san." You say.

He bows.
"Tao light the path"

With that he starts running down the mountain far faster than you can...you're a little jealous as you rise from your own bow.

-----------------
Two Days Later

You find yourself, for once not busy with anything. No training, no cases, not even some sort of text to study.
So you decide to wander a little, see what can be seen, maybe you'll figure out where Izu...
Well speak of Soju and there he is.

The muscled monk strides up beside you, his posture is relaxed, like he's spent far too long carrying something and now it's off his shoulders. He bows to you just long enough for you to get your own bow done.

"When you leave for Toshi Ranbo I'll be there" He says simply.

"I.. what?"

"Sayanora for now Megumi-san, enjoy your dango" He smiles, and bows farewell.

You...think you recruited him? It's not entirely clear what just happened.
-------

After talking with Brother Jubei he explains that Izu just wandered into the complex, and said that he'd join you when you left. Jubei asked him what he was talking about. Izu smiled and said that he had figured out what you were training for, some sort of perilous journey to a place where you were in danger, and he was in, because you had helped him kill himself.

You didn't really understand what that meant but Brother Jubei assured you that it did make sense.

Well whatever happened, you now have three of your five companions....and four months left before you left. You think you're making progress.

Still, while you take it easy for a few days, you have to plan your next move...you will approach

[] Hida Tanako (Excellent Hunter and Combatant)
[] Akodo Tsukiko (Opens up more options, combat focused)
[] Moshi Naeko (Opens up more options court focused)
[] Kakita Reika (Master Artisan, Skilled Courtier)
[] Kakita Toshiro (Excellent Court Duellist, Skilled Investigator)

AN: Sorry for the delay on this one, there's still more to do with this update, but that requires an interlude from Izu's perspective to explain what went down between him and the Soshi. Since neither option really answered Izu's question directly, I combined them to avoid more subvotes as he asked again.

Again sorry for the delay.

None needed.
How many more recruitment opportunities are we expecting?
If I'd known we'd have this many I would have suggested Akodo and Moshi more earlier.
Well you guys weren't supposed to get Yukiko and Sora at the same time, but I didn't say that it seemed like a dick move to take that way from you. The idea was that you'd have six chances to recruit, but would need to spend one chance to open up options. That way you'd get about five people on the team.

So I guess three more recruitment chances with the extra being used for PLOT tm

Cheers in that case,
[X] Akodo Tsukiko (Opens up more options, combat focused)
I don't trust Moshi she gave up on Yasuki too easily, I don't want to split up the happy couple and and I definitely don't trust the Hida whos had multiple attempts on our life.

E: Besides we probably need to give her a sick note for why an entire squad has gone missing.

If I'd realized, I would have gone for her sooner. As it is... with a group this large, I figure we probably do want to invite Hida Tanaka along. It'll be enough people that her focus is more likely to be on ruining us *in* the group, rather than sabotaging the group itself. At the same time, she already semi-knows what's going on, and she's putting herself through Training From Hell *anyway*, so we're probably okay not grabbing her early. I still don't want to drag in the Kakita couple, though which means that we need a slot unlocker, and the sooner we hit that, the better. With that, combat is better than court skills.
