I don't know if this was intentional or not, but I do like the reversal you've made, that despite her military training and experience Asuka is now the novice in a land of magic, whereas Shinji is the established presence and a 'veteran' already steeped into the world. It adds a pretty nice, potentially much healthier, twist to their dynamics.

Well, I can say that Asuka's was definitely intended. As for Shinji... let's just say that he still has a long way to go and has his fair share of faults to get through. He might have seemed a bit more competent than he really is.

The interactions between the two of them are not going to go as tragically as they do in canon, but I have no intention to turn this into a WAFF-fest right from the get go either. It wouldn't fit what I want to do with this story, and I also need more practice in writing fluid dialogues before I can properly do that kind of scenes, I think.

He might have seemed a bit more competent than he really is.
No, he didn't. That was more a poor choice of words on my part. What I meant was that he was the one in his element now, while Asuka is the fish out of water who faces a steep learning curve. It's his world she's landed in, whereas the Eva was Asuka's world that Shinji was intruding on.

On that you are absolutely correct, and yes, it was intentional. :)

Okay, currently working on the next snippet, with some luck it will be out later today. If not, tomorrow.

Anyone knows what sake tastes like? Is it bitter? I've been checking around the net for a while but I'm not finding anything about the taste, and I kinda need it.

Kinda like vodka (why would that be? :p), but depending on its strength, it might come closer to spiritus.

A Taste of Fire - 1
Well, here it is. I don't think it is yet finished because chances are I'll be adding some more content to the snippet in the area where the line is located, but tell me what you think about everything else. We should be about two/three snippets from the end of chapter two and the actual start of the story (I hope).

Chapter 3: A Taste of Fire

Half an hour after their spar, Asuka sat alone with her thoughts on a bench near the training grounds, while Misato fetched them both a few drinks to 'freshen up' after their activities. Not that the woman needed much freshening after the one-sided beat down she had given Asuka, but she was eager to go anyway. That suited the redhead just fine, she didn't really want to see the older woman right now.

She glanced at the practice spear resting against the bench and her face scrunched up in disgust.

'Still not good enough.'

All of the years of grueling training, with the double standards that her Yamese heredity had imposed on her when compared to her peers, all the mocking, the alienation and the drive to make herself the very best... and what did she have to show for it?

A resounding defeat against the very first person she had to seriously fight.

Had it been real combat she would be dead already.

Granted, Katsuragi had probably used some magical bullshit to wreck her at the end, but her claims right before the second half of the fight had still been spot-on: The moment that Asuka's initial push had been contained, she had already lost the spar. Misato's little trick only made it happen faster.

Not that knowing that made that particular pill any easier to swallow.

Katsuragi's judgment of Asuka's abilities had been as swift as her rain of final blows:

'You need to conserve your energy,' she had said, 'your technique is good but no amount of skill will save a tired warrior. Instead, learn to employ your enemy's strength against them, there is no shame in balancing offense and defense to outlast your opponent. That is the only reason I won today.'

Could she have been wrong all these years?, Asuka wondered. Did she feel the need to completely change her fighting style, just on the word of the first person to defeat her in years? Her style had worked just fine during training back in Ulm; don't let the enemy breathe, don't let the enemy think, don't let the enemy hope that they can defeat you and eventually an opening will appear. People are people, they are bound to make mistakes under stressful situations.

But Katsuragi had made it look easy.

Would her way of fighting get her killed against a more skilled opponent?

It was a truly depressing prospect.

Asuka caught the sound of footsteps coming closer to the bench and raised her eyes to look at who was coming. It was Misato, finally coming back and carrying a bottle wrapped in a white cloth and a pair of shallow cups. The sunny smile Katsuragi carried became a grim thin line when she saw the redhead.

"Still brooding?"

When she received no answer, Misato sighed and sat down next to Asuka.

"I told you already, you did fine! You have to learn to control yourself a bit and not waste all of your energy so quickly, but that's something you'll get with practice. I haven't had such a fun spar in a while, that's for sure!"

Ignoring Misato's cheerful tone, Asuka lowered her head and hid her eyes behind her bangs; Still no answer.

Misato rolled her eyes and started to unwrap the bottle she carried. "You are one moody girl, ain't cha? Such a shame, a pretty face like that is wasted with that expression. In the words of someone I used to know: 'Pretty girls should smile often. It makes the world that little bit of a better place.'"

Asuka let out a small chuckle, or what was supposed to be one. With the way she was leaning forward and her current mood, it came out as more of a mix between a grunt and a scoff.

'That sounded like something Mr. Kaji would say.'

Misato didn't fail to notice the redhead's amusement as she poured some of the contents of the bottle into one of the small cups, but she decided not to comment. Instead, she offered the now full cup to her companion.

"Here. This is the best thing to have after some exercise."

Asuka sat back into an upright position and took the cup offered to her with a skeptical look.

"I thought you were going to bring some water?" She asked.

Misato shrugged and filled a cup for herself. "That was the idea. But I was on my way to get that when I thought of asking Shinji-kun something." She lifted her now full cup slightly. "This is to celebrate his agreement."

The redhead threw a narrowed sideways glance at Misato. "What exactly did you ask him?"

Katsuragi saw yet another chance to mess with Asuka but, in a rare showing of restraint when it came to teasing, decided to let it go. It wouldn't do to have the redhead storm away in anger after bringing the whole concubine thing up again, especially now that she seemed somewhat willing to talk.

"I asked for his permission to have you join the ranks of our militia. You obviously know your way around a weapon, so it would be a real waste to have you working the fields or a random workshop." Misato threw her companion a sunny smile."He left it up to my judgment so... congratulations! You are now an official member of the Watchers!"

Asuka turned her narrowed glance into a full-on glare. "And no one thought to ask what I thought of it?"

"Shinji-kun did, I just assumed you'd be jumping at the chance. Unless you are telling me you'd rather show us how good your green thumb is?"

Asuka left her cup on the bench and stood up, looking Katsuragi in the eye.

"That's not the problem here! Why do you think that I'm going to willingly go fight my own countrymen?!

Misato raised her hands in a pacifying gesture. "Don't worry about that, the front of the war is on the other end of the island! Did you forget? The Watchers only take care of Akuro's local problems, like the occasional bandit group, beastie and such. We used to deal with rabid Nienko too, but they have been really calm lately.

"'Nienko'? What are those?"

"Beastmen, you could call them? They live in the forests to the east of Akuro, and in some places of the mainland. They are generally peaceful and we don't bother each other, but sometimes a Nienko will lose control over their beast-self and go on a rampage around the area. When that happens we Watchers contain them and try to calm them down, but we are sometimes forced to kill them if they become too dangerous to the surroundings. Those can be kind of tricky and require quite a few people that know what they are doing but like I said, the last time was a long time ago."

Asuka had never heard of such 'Beastmen' before, nor read about them in the multitude of books in Ulm's university. Could these Nienko be native only to Yamato? And why deploy such a force against a single person? Judging from the moniker of 'Beastman', she expected them to be more physically able than the average person, but throwing a hunting party at the beastman in question seemed a bit much. Overkill, really.

"Are those Nienko really that dangerous?" Questioned the redhead.

Misato smiled grimly at her. "Yup, an enraged Nienko will easily overpower you if you are not careful. You see, they are not only bigger and meaner that your average guy, but they also transform."

Yeah right. Misato had to be pulling her leg with that one.

"Bullshit."

"No bullshit, trust me, I've seen it happen myself. The Nienko closer to us are half-feline and can turn into all sorts of those; mostly big, hulking tigers. Have you ever tried to fight a tiger by yourself? It's not fun, I assure you."

She drank some more of her beverage before continuing.

"Many folks around here are really scared of them, claiming that they have been forgotten and punished by the Lady for some transgression or another. As you can imagine, that little theory and their history of past attacks don't make them too popular. Even if those episodes aren't something that they can really control; Personally, they have never given me a reason to hate them, so I don't particularly mind them."

She took hold of the bottle and filled her cup once again.

...How much was she going to drink?

"But that's a topic for another moment. I suppose you are interested in joining if you are asking so many questions? Not that I had any doubts, mind you."

Asuka thought it over for a moment. To be honest, she didn't like the idea of harsh and boring manual labor like farm work. She obviously preferred a job where she could use her talents and training, and for that the Watchers did seem like the best choice.

But that didn't mean she couldn't try and get something out of joining.

"On one condition."

Misato left her cup aside for a moment and focused her full attention on Asuka.

"As long as it's not too unreasonable. Shoot."

"Teach me how to use that magical bullshit you pulled off at the end of our spar."

Misato looked amused and smiled a sad smile.

"I can't do that. I would if I could, but that's sadly not the case."

"Why can't you?" Pressed the redhead.

"What I did wasn't magic. It's just the fruit of many years of training and a... little helping boost, you could say. I could teach how to do it, but you would never be able to actually pull it off unless you had that same help."

Asuka could feel her patience starting to run thin. "And how can I get that 'help'?"

Misato took another sip from her drink and put on a serious face again. "Sorry kiddo, but I'm not answering that. I already said a bit too much, probably;" Misato raised her left hand to stop Asuka from going on a tirade. "Bottom line is, I cannot teach you that technique. On the other hand, I can help you identify your weak points and improve on those, get you to your full potential." She winked at Asuka. "Who knows, that might actually end up netting you that little 'help' you want!"

Asuka kept trying to glare a hole in Katsuragi's head for a moment, but let out a deep sigh and sat back down when it became evident that Misato just kept on drinking without caring much for her antics.

"You are not going to budge on that one, are you?"

"Nope!" Came the cheerful response.

"Fine, whatever." It was clear that the redhead wasn't happy at all with the result of her efforts. "I'll join your little troupe. But I'm not fighting anyone Imperial, got it?"

"And you won't have to!" Misato filled her cup and held it before her. "This deserves a toast. Come on, get your cup ready!"

Asuka rolled her eyes but offered no further arguing before she picked up her cup again and mimicked Misato. Taking a look at the beverage in front of her, she found herself unable to identify it by color or smell. Even if Asuka had never been much of a drinker, she was still capable of telling quite a few drinks apart so this particular development was already worrying her quite a bit.

"What was this again?"

"Shochu. And you don't have to look at it like that kiddo, it won't kill you."

Even if Misato's jab was slightly annoying, Asuka had to admit that if the drink had been dangerous in any way, Misato would have been dead ten times over with the way she had been drinking it. So really, how bad could it be?

"Okay kiddo, here's to you giving me more interesting fights. KANPAI!"

And the shochu went down Misato's throat faster than Asuka could blink. Not wanting to be outdone, Asuka prepared herself and drank the cup's content in a single big gulp.

As the girl felt the drink burn her way through her throat and her eyes water, she concluded that trying to imitate Katsuragi had been a very bad idea. As the poor girl started coughing uncontrollably she couldn't help but remember that Misato had downed this stuff like it was water!

'What the hell is that woman's stomach made of?!'

"Pfft." Scoffed the older woman when she saw her new recruit's suffering. "Lightweight."

Despite being fantasy, those two are still just so PERFECT. Asuka still trying to be the best and feeling crushed when one thing doesn't go her way, along with Misato's attitude (and capacity for booze).

That's good to know. One of the main worries I have when writing this is trying to keep everyone mostly in-character, especially Rei. That one's a bit of a special case since her backstory (like Shinji's) is completely different, but I also want to try and not have her become competely unrelated to the original character. Let's see how I do when she gets more screentime, which should be pretty soon.

Come on, Asuka! Sake's not even that high proof! Cowgirl up!

I'm going to have fun with Asuka's lack of alcohol tolerance when a particular someone joins the party. :p

I don't remember if it's like this in the actual anime but I've always imagined Rei as being someone who would almost never use contractions, no matter who she's talking to, or what's happening.

Also she never says something simple like "I need help", instead it's "I require assistance".

That's probably just me though.

That's one of the things. This Rei had a normal childhood (no clone shenanigans going on here), so I don't intend to make her speech as... robotic as it was in canon. I do want to make her direct and to the point though, and keep the tendency to use short-ish sentences she has in canon; I want to strike a bit of a middle ground here, I suppose. Extend on the monosylabic answers she had in canon but keep her from going on monologues too. The current plan is to have her using very formal speech, at least when she's not getting angry at a certain redhead.

Essentially she's a different Rei, but I don't want Rei fans out there to read the story and feel like she is completely disconnected from the original material. I fear that is going to be pretty hard to pull off.

The contractions thing sounds like it should make sense, but I don't think that's actually the case in the anime. Or at least in the dub. Does Japanese even have contractions?

I disagree on the other part. I've noticed that a lot of authors tend to portray her as robotishly formal, but she's really not. More than anything I think she's laconic. She speaks little and when she does she tries to do it as simply and in as little words as possible. Strip away her monotone and her desire to not actually talk, and I think her speech patterns are pretty normal.

This somehow rubs me the wrong way, but that might be my German interfering, I don't know. IMO, it sounds awkward to have 'heard' something from a book. Personally, I'd have used 'learned'. But again, this might be me confusing dictionaries...

As for Rei, I feel like paraphrasing GreggHL: Rei's fun to write, because she's such a blank slate in canon.

It does sound kind of odd now that you mention it. Made a slight adaptation to it:

Asuka had never heard of such 'Beastmen' before, nor read about them in the multitude of books in Ulm's university.

Better like this?

Just dropping in to mention that I'm now officially on vacation! So I should have quite a bit of free time to write now, at least until September rears its ugly head again.

Starting the next snippet this afternoon, and finishing it by probably tomorrow. ;)

A Taste of Fire - 2
And here we are again, picking up right where we left off. I didn't expect this conversation to take as long as it did, so it appears that we will be having Misato around for at least another snippet.
Plans not surviving contact with the enemy and all that.

I feel like I should be throwing a few more descriptions during the conversations of this snippet, but I'll wait for your opinion on it before going into more detail.

Chapter 3.2

Misato's eyes twinkled with amusement for the short time it took Asuka to recover. Wheezing and red faced (and also feeling a bit foolish), the redhead threw Katsuragi one of her usual death-glares.

"Couldn't you have warned me that it was strong?!"

Misato raised an eyebrow. "Don't go blaming this on me. You can take it as a lesson to learn too, that recklessness of yours is something we are going to be working on getting rid of."

"I'm not reckless!"

"I beg to differ, but enough of that." Misato filled her cup and made to fill Asuka's too, which the redhead grudgingly accepted. "I thought you imperials had a long lasting tradition of getting drunk at the smallest thing? It's surprising to find someone that can't handle something like shochu."

"I can handle it just fine, it just caught me by surprise!"

Asuka's claim might have sounded more believable if her face had not been as flushed as it was. The way it was, her posturing only served to fuel Misato's amusement.

"Suuure you can." teased Misato. Getting Asuka all riled up was quickly becoming one of her favorite hobbies, the redhead's over-reactions were just too fun to pass up.

"I do, dammit! Here, I'll show you!" Asuka squared her shoulders and, throwing her head backwards, drank all the shochu in her cup in one big gulp again and slammed the cup onto the bench immediately afterwards. Feeling the drink burn through her throat once again, Asuka put all of her efforts into not letting any signs of her internal struggle show on her face, expression blank, steady breathing and eyes locked straight ahead.

Even if the way Asuka was holding on was truly commendable, Misato could almost see the smoke coming out of the redhead's ears and had to fight hard a coming bout of laughter.

Asuka's over-reactions were indeed way too fun to pass up.

"How about that?!" challenged the redhead when she had control over her vocal cords once again, her face even more comically flushed than before.

...Asuka was making it really hard not to laugh.

Misato opted for clapping and congratulating Asuka on her achievement instead rather than risking the redhead's ire again, and that seemed to mollify her a bit.

The two of them fell into a comfortable silence after that, and Asuka had to admit that, if properly tasted and in small sips, this 'shochu' wasn't half bad. She had no intention of gulping it down without restraint in the way Misato did, but she wouldn't mind having some more sometime in the future. After her third cup of the liquor, Asuka left her cup on top of the bench, not to be used anymore. She didn't want to go beyond her limits; Misato kept on happily drinking by herself though, and she didn't seem kind on offering anymore conversation for now.

Letting the silence stretch for a few more minutes, there came a moment when Asuka had had enough. Not having something to focus on, be it conversation or physical activity, would often make the redhead's mind wander, usually into less than happy places. Feeling no desire to dwell on the past at this particular time, she rummaged her mind for a topic to bring up and remembered the Kaji-like quote Misato had brought up earlier.

That would do.

"So..." she started. "What happened to him?"

Misato stopped her drinking to look at Asuka quizzically. "What happened to who?"

"The guy you mentioned earlier. The one you 'used to know'. What happened to him?"

Misato's face went sour almost instantly. "Oh. Him." she finished the shochu that was in her cup and set it on the bench. "He accompanied Ikari on an important trip about... twelve or thirteen years ago and never came back."

'Twelve or thirteen years ago? With Ikari?' the numbers didn't add up to Asuka.

"Why was Ikari travelling so young? What would he have been? Five?"

Misato raised an eyebrow and smiled at Asuka's confusion. "Wrong Ikari? I'm talking about Yui Ikari here, Shinji and Rei's mom."

Asuka made a wry face and mentally chastised herself. 'Right. Normal people tend to have parents and all that.' composing herself, she continued. "So, what happened? Did they elope together or something?"

Misato couldn't help a few chuckles at that thought. "No, no! Nothing as scandalous as that. Yui came back fine but when I asked her, she told me that this guy never showed up at the return ship." Misato scoffed. "Probably found himself some floozy to take advantage of. He can just stay wherever it is he is for all I care though, see if I give a damn."

"Why do you think that? Maybe he just honestly missed the ship and got stranded."

"Trust me kiddo, I knew him very well. He was not one to miss an appointment like that for no reason, and I knew him for the womanizing, smooth-talking scumbag that he was. That line I mentioned earlier? One of the pick-up lines that he would spout to pretty much any woman within a fifty meter radius. He was the absolute worst and I can't imagine that he got better with age. So yeah, I'm pretty sure that I'm not too far off in my line of thinking." Katsuragi took a break from her tirade and shrugged. "Either that, or he's dead. In any case, not worth dwelling on too much."

Even if she herself would have probably used more colorful adjectives to describe them, Asuka mentally agreed with Misato: that kind of men were the absolute worst. It was a good thing then that Mr. Kaji, her measuring stick for all things masculine, was nothing like that.

Following on what Misato had said, this 'Yui Ikari' was someone Asuka had not heard of until now. Unless she was the famous 'Sensei' everyone kept mentioning, but Asuka seriously doubted that. Seeing an opportunity to dig up more information, she eagerly questioned Misato.

"How come this Yui Ikari wasn't in the meeting if she's the mother of those two? Did she pass away? Is that why Shinji is the ruler around here?"

Her questioning must have seemed a bit too eager, because Misato raised her hands on a calming motion. "Whoa kid, slow down! What's with the barrage of questions?"

Asuka shrugged but didn't relent. "Information is power. It always pays off to be well informed."

The redhead saw Misato's face shift into a smirk and she instantly knew that she had made a serious misstep. "Oh? As well informed as you were in the meeting, I take it?"

That was really starting to get old, and Asuka hoped her annoyed expression would finally get the point across. "Will you let that go already?"

"Not for a while, I'm afraid. As for your questions, Yui Ikari is still very much alive and well. The reason you didn't meet her today is that she is on a trip to Tokyo to visit her husband. She should be back in one or two weeks."

"Tokyo? Isn't that like, your capital? Is Shinji's father someone important?" Asuka's face soured as a thought occurred to her. "Don't tell me he is related to some kind of royal family." Asuka's opinion of nobility would go way down if that indecisive and cheating shrimp was part of it.

"No, he's not. But his father has been doing important work over at the capital for a long time now." Misato's face grew serious once again in the same manner it had done back during the meeting. "And watch your tone Asuka, that's still our liege you are talking about."

"'Our' liege? Don't lump me in your same boat, I don't remember swearing any oaths." Protested the redhead.

"No you did not, but you are still his servant for as long as you make use of his generosity, with everything that entails. You'd do well to remember that, I'd rather not have to go into defusing any more arguments with Rei."

"Fine, whatever." It was clear that Misato's tone left no room for any arguments with her. "I'll make sure to be on my very best behavior around them. Happy?"

"I trust that you will. They are both good kids, I'm sure that you will get along fine if you give them a chance."

"If I give them a chance? I'll give you that on Shinji, but Blue was the one that went for the neck first. I don't owe her anything."

"Blue? Is that what you are calling Rei?"

"Fitting, right? What's with that anyway? Blue hair and red eyes are not normal on people, is she blessed by your dear Lady or something?" she scoffed. "That's not a blessing I'd want, that's for sure."

"Seriously, cut that out. You are trying my patience here, Sohryu." Misato's tone was becoming more hostile by the minute. "As for Rei, she's not blessed, she's diseased. She's looked like that all of her life for some reason no one can explain, even if she can lead a perfectly normal life on all other accounts. Folks around here are used to her so they don't bug her about it, and I'd rather you didn't bring her looks up in conversation. Are we clear?"

Clearly not a request, and Asuka didn't feel like pushing her luck anymore. "Crystal, I'll stay out of her way, no problem. BUT, if she is the first to bite me I am biting back. And I won't budge on that."

Even if she was clearly not happy about it, this seemed to be enough of an agreement to make Katsuragi relent. "Fair enough, but I expect you to keep your word on Shinji. The kid is taking a very big risk by offering you his hospitality, and I want you to at least be somewhat grateful for it."

There it was, the chance to question Misato about something that had been bugging Asuka for a while now. She stood up from the bench and turned to face Misato.

"That's another thing I don't get! Why am I allowed hospitality? I am grateful and I mean no disrespect, don't get me wrong, but Ikari's reasoning of no freaking reason is moronic on so many levels! I'm supposed to be your enemy for God's sake!"

Misato waited a bit for Asuka to calm down before starting to explain. "You are right on that, without the proper context Shinji's decision might seem senseless, but you can be sure that it is anything but that. Even if he has not directly told me, I can guess what one of the reasons why you are allowed to stay is, but I'll allow him to explain it to you when he feels like it." Misato stood up and headed for one of the wooden fences beside the training grounds that overlooked the farmlands and workshops below, motioning for Asuka to follow her. When the redhead was beside her, Misato pointed to one of the growing zones and continued. "I'll explain one of the other reasons to you, though. Tell me, what do you see over there?"

Asuka threw an odd look at Misato before responding with the obvious. "A farm."

Misato threw a small smile her way. "A little more in detail, please. What do you see in the farm?"

Even if she didn't have the slightest idea of where Katsuragi was going with this, Asuka decided to follow along for now. She had already pissed off the older woman enough for one day. "I see irrigation channels, a horse-drawn hoe, and..." The redhead looked at the plots neighboring the farmland she was looking at. "Is that a three field system?"

Misato nodded in agreement. "Good eye. You seem pretty knowledgeable about farming, you sure you don't want to help our people there?"

"I'll pass. But what's so important about this? It's just basic farming tools and techniques."

"The important thing is that you won't find anything like that" Misato pointed at the farmland they were watching. "anywhere else on Yamato. Only in Akuro." Katsuragi saw Asuka about to ask something, and she continued before the redhead had the chance to do so. "'And why is that?' I see you are about to ask. It's simple, really. Some years ago, a man in need of help ended up on Akuro. A man foreign to Yamato that taught the people of this province all kinds of wondrous things as a thanks for their help, and made their lives better in the process."

Misato turned to look at the redhead and saw her starting to link all of the dots in her head. She was sure that Asuka would momentarily figure everything out on her own, but... What would the fun in that be?

"You see, Asuka," Misato waited until she had the redhead's attention. "you are not the first Imperial to ever set foot on Akuro."

It was a good thing then that Mr. Kaji, her measuring stick for all things masculine, was nothing like that.
Heh heh heh. I can't wait to see (read?) Asuka's face when she finds out something about her idol.

Letting the silence stretch for a few more minutes, it came a moment when Asuka had had enough.
I think that should be 'there came a moment' here.

She finished the sake that was on her cup and set it on the bench.
'in her cup' here.

A point about sake: It's not a distilled liquor. The process for making it is similar to brewing beer. The alcohol content of undiluted sake is only a bit higher than wine, and three small cups would be equivalent in alcohol content to no more than a glass of wine.

Asuka's reaction is still valid, since Misato probably brought some of the cheap stuff, which apparently can be pretty harsh. Quality sake goes down quite smoothly, at least once you're used to it, and it's easy to drink too much without realizing it. (Not that I would know about that.)

For a distilled spirit, look up shochu.

%€*&! Phone ate my multi quotes, and I don't have the time to go over it again (sorry!), but you should check your transitions from narration to speech - there are three or four periods instead of commas and a few capitalized words (one of them being 'Teased').

Oh, and Halt is right; that will be an awful wake-up call for Asuka.

Thanks for the info, I'll take a look at it after I have dinner. I'm not much of a connosieur on western drinks, let alone exotic eastern ones. :p
