Given the current difficulties in drumming up large amounts of money in a hurry, Ella had to admit that her only real option was to take South Woods up on its idea. It would affect her ability generate military goodwill, but for the moment that was less important than having the raw resources to get the production facilities she needed in place. She was also quite happy that Samantha had brought her this information as, while after a bit of thought she considered it perhaps too convenient, it could still be a major way of blindsiding her and getting her to act rashly in the moment. She could concoct all sorts of scenarios where getting Ella in an uncomfortable state with the possibility of her paternity might be used as leverage in some political play. Now forearmed with the possibility, she could prepare herself for what might come next.

Nightmare Cube (26)

The trip out to Owl's Landing for the meeting was... unpleasant. The Nightmare Cube continued to drain her mental and physical reserves, leaving her an increasingly nervous wreck. People had to be figuring out that there was something distinctly wrong with her as her dreams became increasingly blurry as she was simply unable to sleep long enough for them to evolve into the grand narratives they had before. Instead she had unnerving flashes of following someone through a maze filled with shifting dunes of sand as the wind howled overhead.

She brought Alexander with her on the trip simply so that she would have an excuse for her haggard appearance, although there would obviously be some questions raised since she did have enough money to easily afford people to take care of him. She had considered it, but motherhood was such a useful cover for her stress while she figured out what to do next. Plus, if she brought people into her more intimate life they might notice things about her that could lead to questions being asked and people becoming aware of how things had evolved, and she couldn't have that.

She did of course have to get a sitter for Alex for her meeting, and a part of her was panged with distress that she didn't even try to seek help from her mother. She would see her more once she had the cube issue sorted out, she didn't want her to figure out how badly things had turned out. Plus... plus maybe she had a lead as to her father, but even if she did it would take time to figure that out, so if this turned anything up she could have something solid to talk about once the cube was dealt with. That would make definite good fodder for a reunion, rather than the relatively short one they had had in the immediate days after Alex was born.

In any case, the meeting with the Blackthorn ambassador was set to take place on neutral but private ground, the two of them meeting in a club with private rooms. While somewhat unfortunately clandestine, neither obviously wanted to openly advertise a visit to the domain of the other, even if they weren't being secretive about who they were meeting. Well, not directly secretive, Ella just wasn't really bringing up what her business was, but noble politics were already enough that people wouldn't pry unless they figured they had something to gain.

So Ella sat in a somewhat dimly lit booth, looking out over the much more brightly lit club through a one-way mirror. It was relatively slow since it was still relatively early, and the whole looming threat of alien attack had people otherwise occupied, although the strange limbo where the fighting was still very distant had created a definite oddness to the atmosphere. While the people hired by the club to try to keep things lively were almost painfully obvious, there was a definite charm to the whole thing. Eventually though the door behind her slid open and the ambassador stepped inside.

A woman in her late middle-age, she was allowing streaks of silver to seep into her hair instead of using dye like Ella was, she was probably a late first-generation baby, born after the worst of the post Starfall chaos but before things had truly stabilized, which also meant that she had to pretty much by definition have been one of the movers and shakers during the Blackthorn Regulars fight for independence. While she had all the attractive presence a career politician had to have, there was a certain gormless air to her that Ella pegged as definitely being an act, a way of concealing a sharper mind. Part of it was based off her clothing, which Ella knew was conservative in Blackthorn but seemed a little flippant and ridiculously clashing in Green Owl. Their mercenary origins had lead to a certain degree of flamboyance in order to stand out becoming the norm in the polity. Their party dress was of course considered absolutely outrageous - especially by those who didn't get invited to parties.

A small smile crept over Ella's face as she considered that Green Owl was seen of as being excessively sombre and creepy in their dress. Different strokes for different folks she supposed.

"Ambassador Thorncliffe," Ella stated as she concealed her thoughts and turned towards the older woman in her chair.

Nodding as she took her own seat, the ambassador said, "Baroness-Knight Stone, pleased to meet you. Please, call me Amber."

Ella nodded and said in turn, "Very well Amber. I prefer Ella as well, and I know your state's feelings on nobility."

The ambassador smirked and waved a hand dismissively, "Now now, we can continue our disagreements after the horrible aliens intent on killing us all are dealt with."

Ella quirked an eyebrow and said, "You know, considering the source of information, one would think your people would be more skeptical of the full intentions of the Mantis."

Amber frowned for a moment before schooling her face and saying, "Ah, of course, we didn't publicly announce the information to the international community, even if we didn't classify it. We attempted independent contact with the Mantis to express past disagreement with their enemies. They used the radio source - fortunately set up in the forest and operated remotely - as targeting data for an orbital strike. Blackthorn, being the largest city on the planet in terms of area, has also received the most attention from their bombardment attempts."

Frowning in turn, Ella said, "My condolences to any caught in the attacks."

"Thank you for your concern. Casualties have been thus far minimal, but there have been a few caught out in the open during an attack. However, that's not really why I wanted to have this meeting with you," Amber stated.

Judgement (Int+Intr) 61 + 22 = 83

Ella carefully judged things and decided to keep her cards close to her chest and instead asked, "And what reason might that be?"

The ambassador looked about her for a moment before she pulled out a data pad and said, "Our intelligence service has a number of unconventional members, and this has allowed us to stay ahead of certain threats. While blindsided by the Mantis - mostly due to lacking context for the data being received - we have picked up on an anomaly concerning you."

"An anomaly?" Ella asked, suddenly on high alert. What did they know? What could they know?

"Yes. While obviously our methods are classified, we are coming forward to you since we feel this is a matter of planetary importance, and we are coming to you specifically because we feel that your leader, your grandmother, is somehow involved without your knowledge, or at least full knowledge," Amber explained, opening up several files on the data pad. Chief among them was a picture of a man holding a small white cube. From his uniform, he was almost certainly a mech pilot.

Ella was of course, dead silent.

"You are aware of a major reaver attack on a settlement a few years ago?" Amber said, letting the implication hang in the air.

Willpower 79 + 28 = 107

Ella kept her tongue in check and said as evenly as she could, "Of course I am aware of the event."

Amber then highlighted another picture, this one of a man who had hung himself. There was a comparison between his face and another, blurrier picture that suggested that he had also had a cube at some point. Amber stated, "We have identified a device that we are unsure of the stated purpose of, but from our observed information it appears to function as a sort of antenna that picks up signals that are disturbing to the human mind."

That hit Ella sideways and she practically demanded to know, "How could you observe that?"

Amber considered for a moment before she said, "Because we have our own methods and we are 'hearing' the signals, even if we can't intercept meaning from them. Given observed behaviours and other intelligence we are not disclosing, we have concluded that your grandmother is not informing the people she gives these cubes to despite their deleterious effects and the danger they can represent. With the current crisis, we feel that discontinuing the project would be prudent, but our projections show that directly confronting the Duchess Stone will not result in a favourable outcome. We thus decided to contact the user we felt most likely to be able to bring the manner up with her in a positive manner."

Assessing Evidence (Int+Intr) 48 + 22 = 70

Ella went through the data pad and the evidence they were choosing to present her, and after a few minutes of going through it in silence she tossed it aside in frustration. They obviously knew a lot more than what they were telling her, which was tailored to get the response they wanted, but she had no idea what angle to press them on to get anything more out of the ambassador. This was clearly a game and she was being played in it, but she had no conception of what her value was to either side. A massive exhaustion headache closed in on her temples like a spiked clamp and it took an act of willpower to not scream or otherwise lose her composure. As it was she had to take a deep breath with her eyes closed, and when she opened them Amber was looking at her with an all-too-cultivated look of concern. Biting her lower lip, Ella said, "So you want me to confront her over the project?"

"Yes," Amber stated. After a moment she said, "Alternatively, or perhaps supplementally depending on how things go, we might be able to send someone with the resources to suppress some of the negative effects - such as attracting reaver attention."

Gritting her teeth, Ella said, "You want me to accept a foreign agent into my territory, knowing that you know about a classified project?"

Rolling her eyes, the ambassador said, "Our people would be going through official channels as part of Project Networking, everyone would know they were there. They would make piss poor spies considering everyone being moved around will be assumed to be spies already."

"That just requires them to be more subtle, especially if they are such specialists," Ella replied. "Also, Project Networking?"

"The destruction of the Belters has the other Great Powers worried about catastrophic loss of culture in an attack. We are planning on sending out enclaves to each other to ensure continuity of certain aspects, at least for the duration of the war. Razorleaf Meadows is already on our shortlist due to the community of Indigo Hammer ex-pats. The specialists we would be sending would be because their skills would be worth preserving in the face of the loss of Blackthorn, they would simply be able to assist you while there and keep an ally from suffering unnecessary losses," Amber explained.

Rubbing her temples again, Ella found herself in something of a bind since going to Anna with this meeting would inevitably involve discussion of the cube and that had the risk of it being taken away from her, something she could barely tolerate considering the possibility of right now. Not coming forward with this of course had its own massive dangers, so her first impulse was to just bury it and hope it went away. Unfortunately, on further consideration, she could also end up getting such an agent assigned to her without her knowledge if this Project Networking thing was going through anyway. Better to know where the predator was than to lose it in the brush.

Sideswipe (Cha+Intr) (100+92) + 24 = 216
Welp...

Still rubbing her temples, Ella commented sarcastically, "And here I thought this was because you were going to talk to me about my father."

"Your father?" Amber asked, clearly having no idea what the hell Ella was talking about.

Until something dawned in her eyes as she rolled something over in her head and made some sort of connection. Then her eyes started to get very, very large.

Then the screaming started.

"FUCK! FUCK! SHE WOULDN'T! SHE WOULDN'T! NOT WITH HIM! NOT WITH HIM!" Amber started to scream, which of course got Ella going off about trying to get a straight answer from the panicking woman.

As the whole situation descended into chaos with Amber terrified out of her wits as she tried to get away from Ella, who was trying to simultaneously get her to calm down and stop from running, which involved trying to corner her which obviously made the situation worse but Ella didn't care, the view screen concealed in one of the walls of the private room activated. After a moment of neither party acknowledging it, there was a very loud, "AHEM," which caused both parties to look over at the steel haired face of the Duchess Anna Stone glaring at them.

"So the head of state for Blackthorn just called me in a panic, saying that I had to contact my eldest granddaughter and their ambassador because something just went very wrong and that we needed to talk. Care to enlighten me as to what happened?" Anna asked dryly.

"How could you?! Your own daughter?! How? With him!" Amber screamed in accusation at the screen.

Anna just blinked in unamused confusion and said, "I can only presume that you are referring to the father of my granddaughter? In which case you seem to be privy to more information than I am."

What little blood was left in her face drained from her and Amber said, "You... you honestly don't know?"

Anna flicked her eyes over to the much more emotionally conflicted and confused Ella and said, "I know the boy's name but what trouble he has been up to since he impregnated my daughter I am unaware of. Evidently it is quite a deal, presumably with your government somehow complicit in it."

Ella licked her lips and asked, "Who's my father? What has he done?" She flicked her own eyes over with a mildly pained expression to Anna, who just gave her an unconcerned look.

"He's a citizen of Blackthorn-" Amber began before being interrupted by Anna.

"Could you send over his official renunciation of citizenship papers, because he was born in Green Owl," she said sarcastically.

Clearly shocked, the ambassador said, "If he ever made that fact clear to my government, it was never disclosed to me... but he's a 'special' citizen of Blackthorn, granted extraordinary privileges due to certain 'skills'."

The terrified and horrified look that Amber was giving both Stone women at the same time caused Anna to suddenly deflate and say, "Awwwwww fuck! Seriously? Seriously?! Well, suddenly things about thirty years ago just became a lot more clear."

"What's going on?" Ella asked, still missing key information.

Running steel fingers over her forehead and through her hair, Anna said, "Your conception was a 'miracle' since your mother was definitely on birth control at the time. Your father pulled a runner and we decided to bury his identity out of embarrassment. Only if he's a 'special' citizen of Blackthorn, that means that he is directly responsible for the failure of the contraceptives due to some quirk of his biology."

"Wait, that means..." Ella begins.

"He would be a mutant, yes," Anna stated, glancing at Amber for confirmation before she said, "And not just one with the freak ability of super-fertility either."

"You had to have suspected, and with the cube..." Amber began.

"Your freaking out suggests that had I full information I would have taken a different course of action," Anna stated. "Look, Ella-"

Interrupt! (2)

The sound of sirens going up interrupted whatever was going to happen next. Whipping her head around to another screen, Anna glared and then began to swear vociferously.

"A massive fleet of what can only be Mantis transports just came into radar range, and the ships they have on station are moving into an orbit that is basically broadcasting their landing zone... yup, we have confirmation of bombardments beginning and the launch of aerospace assets. This is an invasion," Anna said in seething fury over it all. She then glanced at Ella and said, "Most probable target: Diamond Dome."

Ella felt like she had been punched in the gut. After a second she said, "I'll... I'll go..."

Ella's place was...

[X] On the frontlines

There was really only one place for Ella at a time like this, and that was with her soldiers on the frontlines. Alexander was left with Ella's mother, although that whole encounter was just awkward and weird. It should have been a deeply emotional moment, but instead it was just... truncated. Ella had too many unanswered questions and stressors weighing down on her. Her grandmother had promised answers once she knew them herself, although the fact that Ella didn't want to risk the cube being taken away meant that she didn't press on what was going on there the way a part of her knew she should have. She should be going into battle in peak condition, but instead she knew that she would be silver or even white haired by the end of all this.

By the time she arrived back at Razorleaf Meadows to saddle up in her mech and gather her troops, a massive amount of war material was already flowing through the settlement. Stonebridge was going to be the primary staging ground, and while for now that meant that things were going to be more or less out of her control, assuming the settlement was intact at the end of things there would be considerable infrastructure installed for her when control was handed back to her.

The open areas that had once housed solar panels before fusion reactors had been made more common were now also parking lots for the aircraft heading back and forth from the front. While mostly Green Owl Ukkos, there were a number of foreign designs present as well, including what had to be a Belter fighter of some sort, given the advanced systems on display across its faintly alien frame. Unfortunately, pretty much all of the aircraft showed damage of some sort present on their frames, and more than a few were so badly damaged they were clearly being cannibalized for parts to keep the other craft flying. The reports from Diamond Dome were grim, with enemy bombardment and aerospace assets having ensured the safety of initial assets, followed by the landing of large transports. Both sides were deploying theatre scale warheads wherever possible, but thus far the human forces had only really scored one significant kill that way, with a 10kT AA missile knocking out a major transport.

On the ground side of things there was a lot of confusion, but things were generally looking grim. All contact had been lost with assets within the city itself, and it was considered a safe assumption that everyone had either fled, died, or been captured. No one was quite sure if the Mantis took prisoners since space warfare wasn't particularly conducive to the practice, but the Belters had old files from explorers that indicated that the aliens were notably xenophobic and thus it was assumed that anyone still alive in Diamond Dome had simply not been found yet. It was also suspected that the Mantis had demolished the rail lines for the city in their bombardment, but this was suspected to be due to the Mantis not particularly understanding the realities of long distance transport across Dandriss.

Current planning, such as it was, was for a number of probing ground attacks to attempt to understand Mantis ground capabilities before making any grand moves to shove them out of the settlement. The Belter fleet was also reorganizing after getting their teeth kicked in and from past experience the Mantis would have to withdraw for logistical reasons. If they tried to fight with their weapon racks expended they would lose their entire fleet, and logistical streams were vulnerable to defeat in detail, so they would have to pull out of orbit eventually. The only question was if they could be pushed out of Diamond Dome before reinforcements arrived.

A Sound of Thunder (21)

By the time Ella arrived with everything Razorleaf Meadows had at Stonebridge, at least part of the reason for the landing had become clear: the Mantis wanted a supply base for aircraft, as evidenced by the ubiquity of air battles in the sky and the fact that there was an almost constant rumble of AAA firing at targets. The small settlement was rapidly filling up with troops. Most of them were from Green Owl - although some were clearly from some of the wealthier subsections and had some unique modifications to their standard load out of gear that was commented on. Still, there were a significant number of troops from other polities present. There were tall, lanky warriors from Indigo Hammer dressed in organic armour, mostly silent cyborgs from the Authority off in their own corner attended to by their ornately dressed officers, a whole company of Blackthorn dragonslayers wearing their kills as armour, the frankly monstrously huge giants of Andraste's clan, and even a single Belter Agent in sophisticated and sleek power armour standing silently in his or her own dark corner.

The whole situation was of course tense, and there was an expectation of some sort of ground push against the settlement, as the Mantis were having little success at wrestling control of the skies enough for a proper bombing run due to the presence of large amounts of AAA. No one was quite sure if the general staff would push for a first strike against Diamond Dome, or if they would wait for the Mantis to come to them first. Either way, the toxic ash falling from the sky from the forests burnt out by the bombardment served as a somewhat sombre reminder of the situation. Of course, out where the forests had been blasted the worst new shoots were almost certainly erupting, with all the dangers that entailed.

Humans had decided that unless you could pave over it with adamantium that reached most of the way to the mantle, it was a bad idea to try to burn out the forest. Only made it aggressive.

Ella has time before operations start, one way or another. Pick two groups to talk to:

Ella's first order of business was to pass among her own troops, to figure out how they were feeling and to see if she could pump them up in any way. None of the infantry were in her direct chain of command, but her mech certainly allowed for coordination and increased communication, so making sure they were ready to go was part of her job. Plus, since she would be providing substantial fire support she would be a figure of considerable focus both of morale for the troops and fire from the enemy.

Morale Boosting (Cha+Comb) 32 + 29 = 61

As it was the troops were appreciative of her presence, but in their interactions she either couldn't quite strike a spark or could find the tinder for it to land to get them really fired up. It was probably her as she was as perpetually exhausted as she was, try as she might to hide it, but to an extent it was probably just because the troops were already as ready to go as they could be without devolving into pointless macho oneupmanship. They were going to be defending their homes - some more abstractly than others at this juncture, but the sentiment was obviously there - against alien invaders, it was hard to not have good morale while still being nervous in such situations. People were naturally easy to rile up over such threats.

Still, it also gave her a chance to chat with Knight-Captain Moore and see how he was doing.

"Your squadron good and ready?" Ella asked.

Brabant nodded and said, "Yes ma'am. We still have kinks to sort out and there's some unavoidable greenness, but we're definitely ready to go."

Nodding, Ella states, "Good. Given the amount of firepower and mobility we have we're almost certain to get lumped into some sort of assault group, so we'll be depending on each other out there. Keep your men sharp because they'll probably have to do most of the actual cutting - medium and heavy mechs tend to attract more fire than they put out."

Brabant nodded and said, "Of course ma'am. We do practice combined arms."

Smiling, Ella said, "Yeah, but its always different in actual combat."

There was a pause and Ella realized that she had fought reavers and alpha dragons and where Moore had mostly tussled with raiders. What a curious sensation. Shaking her head at the sudden strangeness she felt, she instead said, "I'll try to make sure that you get plenty of opportunity to take advantage of a distracted enemy to pummel them."

Saying a few other things to the officers she would be working with, Ella then wandered over to the armoured sentinel standing watch on their own. Raising a hand in greeting, she said, "I'm trying to make sure I can greet everyone visiting my settlement in due time, but I couldn't help but not your distinctly singular nature. I figured a greeting earlier rather than later was in order."

Introductions (Chax2) 85 + 22 = 107

The figure was silent for a moment before there was a marginal degree of relaxation and the faceplate of the armour slid up to reveal a vaguely masculine face, the flesh almost certainly sitting atop cybernetic underlays. Extending a hand, the man said, "Agent Uriel, StarCom Special Troubleshooter... not sure how much longer that title will really mean anything, but my orders are to destroy as many Mantis assets as I can, and this is the place to do that right now."

Ella nodded and said, "You'll definitely get the chance to fulfill that here. I suppose you've already given my superiors a briefing on your capacities, but as both a baroness and a mech pilot I have to ask if I can get a quick rundown to better integrate."

Uriel considered for a moment before he shrugged and said, "As another major asset I suppose I have no good reason not to give you a brief overview. My armour and cybernetics give me enhanced strength, speed, and survivability, but as the most significant feature for you to know about, I have a set of holographic projects that can improve stealth or foul with enemy targeting. When we engage I am certain that you will be briefed again on this, but if you see a broken collection of mirrors running across the battlefield, that is me. For anti-armour work I have a small scale particle cannon, while for anti-infantry work I have a rapid cycling UV laser. Both are fed from a fusion reactor and thus if I am running low on ammunition it is because of extraordinary circumstances and a fall back has already been called."

Ella nodded at that and said, "I take it your primary role will be rapid strikes at high value targets, using mobility to engage, inflict damage, disengage, and then leave for another part of the battlespace?"

Uriel nodded in turn and said, "It has already been assessed that such uses are the best use of my capabilities. I will be a 'free asset' so to speak."

Considering this, Ella stated, "Then we are likely to encounter each other frequently. Any asset capable of threatening my mech is likely to draw your attention. I look forward to working with you." She then extended her hand.

Taking it in his robotic gauntlet covered hand, Uriel shook heartily without applying the excessive force it was obvious he could and said, "Thank you for seeking me out. I also thank you for not expressing your condolences."

Quirking an eyebrow in puzzlement, Ella was rewarded with his further expansion of, "Many greet me by offering condolences for the destruction of my people. I find it aggravating. It is far more useful to look to the future and how to avenge the wrongs of the past than to dwell upon them."

"And if I learned this beforehand to manipulate you, or if I was being a putz and being tactless by not considering that?" Ella asked self-deprecatingly.

Uriel smiled broadly, the machinery under fake skin almost but not quite entirely entering the uncanny valley. "Then you are either a hard worker or are simply lucky. Both have value on the battlefield."

"I think in this instance it was more luck, but I prefer hard work. More reliable," Ella stated.

Mantis 97 + 30 = 127
Dandriss 43 + 45 = 88

Before Ella could really get to anyone else the call went out over the intercom for a general assembly. Apparently the Mantis were ready to go already and thus had the initiative in battle, so they would be meeting them much closer to Stonebridge than many wanted. For her part Ella was soon in her mech, joining with the systems within. Her heart was a star and her limbs death and she strode through the forest without a concern. All around her thousands moved with singular purpose, flitting from tree to tree one way or another.

The Jaegers were obviously the bulk of the troops and moved the slowest, but they were also among the stealthiest and had numerous man portable heavy weapons that could provide hidden firepoints. They were also supplemented by squadrons of light mechs and about half a dozen medium mechs. The heavy mechs were being held back in transit in favour of raw numbers for the moment, but if they could clear the skies enough for heavy transport aircraft transport they would be brought in in a heartbeat. Unfortunately it sounded like the Mantis were the ones with that option for the moment.

The Indigo Hammer warriors were either infantry using long strides to cover the ground quickly or were mounted on roachrhinos or diamondbacks to serve as cavalry or dragoons. A small cloud of dragonflies also swirled around them - facemelters of course - the surprisingly dangerous animals used for scouting and quiet delivery of messages. While their long guns did not have the range of options all the Jaeger weaponry had, they were the sort of thing that caused panic and morale breakdown when used and were deadly accurate.

The Authority elite had few truly heavy weaponry, their heaviest gear being a few missile launchers, but their standard firearm was still classified as an LMG by most of the other groups, and they had extreme if somewhat dangerous mobility. Their presence was mostly confined to moving among the lower canopy layer with their jump jets, leaping from tree to tree out of sight. They would be there to sow chaos and destruction by striking from unexpected angles.

Cloaked in camouflage gear that hinted at thorny vines curling about them, the Blackthorn Dragonslayers were an eclectic group who had a surprisingly large amount of melee weaponry. Ella only had a vague idea about how they were supposed to fight, but having melee weaponry suggested that they had an excellent use for it. Dragons had the reach, speed, and enough different kinds of ranged weaponry that their engagement envelopes weren't much different from humans with firearms in the forest. Ella had no doubt about their ability to contribute, she just wasn't sure what form it would take.

Then there were Andraste's Avengers, some of the giants being of comparable height to her mech. The monstrously huge people were clad in light vehicle armour and the weapons they carried were even somewhat proportionately outsized. While they had the obvious downside of having nowhere near the survivability of a mech despite having the ability to draw fire like one, they were also much more flexible and agile, able to get in places that one would never expect something with a heavy missile launcher to get. They would have to hold cover harder than most of their heavy assets though.

Finally there was Uriel, who was nowhere to be seen, but was undoubtedly among them.

Slipping through the forest, they came to the area that had to contain the enemy. Before the enemy aircraft had started dropping troops under impenetrable air cover they had launched a massive number of incendiary bombs to clear out their landing zone. While that had obviously failed to remove the trees, it had left an obvious demarcation where the chemical fires had petered out. On one side was the freshly regenerating forest, new shoots pushing up through the grey ash and fungal mats that had colonized the mineral rich detritus, and on the other side the process had been wound back a few hours, the ash there blacker and a bit deeper.

Some part of Ella's brain had a mad smirk come over her at the way some of the ash was almost like sand. It was in a way natural to Dandriss! It just only lasted a few hours before the winds blew it too fine to notice and something ate it to make a new shell.

The army stopped and formed a loose line at this point. Some of the stealthier elements of the forces pushed forward into the Mantis LZ area to attempt to scout them out, while the rest of the army would set up heavy weapons and form a line that they could either let the enemy break upon or that could be quickly moved to a new position if the Mantis had moved faster than they thought and were elsewhere. With any luck though they would be having difficulties with navigation given the lack of aerial support. It took quite a bit of training to navigate in the forests without markers like the rail line.

Ella settled in, letting Jaegers throw a camouflage tarp over her mech like a cloak, and turning her sensor systems to passive. Off in the distance she could see intermittent radar flashes bouncing and echoing off the forest, something she relayed to the rest of the army via LOS lasercomm, a fact that was quietly distributed and confirmed by others. There was definitely something ahead.

The waiting in relative stillness was hell, especially for Ella, who had to constantly be setting little reminders to keep herself from just falling asleep. Once battle started she knew that exhaustion would only drag her down rather than threaten to knock her out. Eventually though her audio sensors picked up the distinctive crack of firearms, and shortly after that someone fired off a radio flare to indicate that the scouts were falling back. The booming of larger weaponry going off followed soon after, and Ella could feel her heart kick into overdrive as the adrenaline hit. She carefully kept her reactor idling to avoid increasing her thermal profile, but the tension and desire to get into the fight was strong.

The scouts reappeared within a few minutes of the flare going up, clearly less organized than before and probably having taken casualties, but other than having sacrificed considerable stealth for speed still in good condition. Bullets whizzed by, chasing them, and in one instance even causing a Jaeger to stumble from a hit before he was picked up and hauled along. For their part the scouts knew their role and kept going past the lines of troops as if they weren't there, continuing deeper into the forest. Once battle was joined they would regroup and join in where needed, but for the moment they had to keep going to maintain the deception as long as possible.

Then, bright and blazing as torches to her sensors, the Mantis arrived. At a distance the most significant thing of note was that they all had active radar up, which given the way they were using it was kind of pointless since it was just bouncing off the forest, creating mad strobing that had to be giving them nothing but garbage data - why weren't they turning the damn things off? - but with something to focus her other sensors on, Ella quickly resolved better images. The creatures were perhaps a metre and a half tall, but some were up to two metres long. They walked on four insectile legs that appeared optomized more for burst speed and jumping than for enduring speed, and their front limbs on an upright torso were massive, raptorial structures, with a large, bulbous head to top it all off. Of course, what they actually looked like under their armour was unknown, because of the hundreds pouring out of the woods where Ella could see, they were universally clad in powered armour. There were three types she could readily pick out that she quickly dubbed tactical, heavy, and assault. The tacticals had what appeared to be HMGs, the heavies missile launchers or recoilless rifles, and the assaults had some sort of heavy blades on their raptorial limbs and some sort of short barrelled weapon for ranged. All types had their weapons shoulder mounted and appeared to be supplied from internal reservoirs situated on their backs.

They also appeared to be about as eager as they were confused, if she was reading their actions in any way correctly.

The demarcation line their incediaries had left fairly clearly had them confused as the ash abruptly went from being carbon to metal and ceramic rich - it took a bit longer for the inorganics to be resequestered by the biosphere - and they were apparently quite reliant on their radars because the way the reflectivity changed obviously had them spooked. What did the world look like to their senses? Ella had no idea, but it was obvious that their NCOs and officers were trying to get them to maintain order - the ones that behaved differently were flagged for analysis for later and across the communication network kills were quietly 'called'. It looked like someone was deciding to get the Mantis troops to advance more cautiously into the forest and the Dandriss officer decided that now was the best time to open fire. As one the infantry opened fire with everything they had at the Mantis in the open. Disturbingly, many of the EM rounds were clearly bouncing off the Mantis armour, but the heavier equipment and sheer weight of fire caused numerous penetrations and dozens of the aliens died in the open salvo as the rest began to fall back to the cover of the trees.

Ella's orders were to sit tight for the moment, as part of a future wave of surprises for the aliens, which gave her the opportunity to watch some of the moments more clearly. While seeing a Jaeger take a stray bullet to the jaw wasn't something she appreciated, there was something comical about one moment where a Mantis took a corrosive dart to the head. The combustible acid didn't immediately kill the creature, but did ignite its head and cause panic, and when one of the thing's compatriots whipped out a fire extinguisher, they both discovered that the ClF3 was reactive with the fire fighting agent when the affect was more akin to a blow torch than its intended use. Ella lost track of that little bit of comedy when a frag missile air burst between them and the return fire from the Mantis began to pick up as they found cover.

The battle quickly devolves into the sort of insane slugging matches that are usually historically recounted from urban battles, with two sides throwing fire at each other from buildings on opposite sides of a road. The Mantis are confused and in foreign terrain facing a dug in enemy, but their armour gives them remarkable resilience, and their average weapon hits harder than the average Jaeger weapon. Also, they have further reinforcements coming in, so it is simply not enough to crush the few hundred who were first there to sweep them all away. Still, the close proximity of the two sides along with the air war that is no doubt swirling overhead means that there is no possibility of an airstrike for the moment, and those are hard to do accurately in the forest. Pre-Starfall plasma weapons on dedicated CAS platforms were the preferred method in the forest.

The battle was mildly interrupted by an aircraft coming down through the trees to explode in a gigantic fireball nearby. A report went up that the Authority elite had been retasked to do shoot-and-scoot missions with their missile launchers loaded with AA rounds against attempts by the Mantis to bring in CAS craft. However, the Mantis were also airdropping in more troops in their LZ and were keeping their transports well protected. There were also long range reports indicating that the final transports from the ships in orbit were likely away and that the fleet appeared to be breaking orbit. The fight for Diamond Dome had well and truly started, the assets destroyed here now directly corresponding to the destruction of the defenders of the city, so long as it could be taken before resupply could be made.

Of course, here and now the Mantis had a significant qualitative superiority to the average trooper and they had the numbers to not simply be swept away. Were it just the Jaegers they had a good chance of being able to break the lines, albeit at considerable cost. It was of course not just the Jaegers, and, more than that, the stakes for the battle were considerably asymmetrical. The Mantis probably only really cared for the LZ since it was away from the obvious path of the rail line and they had defoliated it to make for safer air drops, and within a few hours they would discover how little good that would actually do for them. The Dandriss defenders only really cared for the battle in terms of keeping the Mantis from being able to strike at Stonebridge directly and for intelligence gathering purposes. Sweeping the Mantis away to claim salvage and corpses for dissection was the primary victory condition, and the orders had already gone out to task some of Andraste's troops to such tasks even in the middle of battle, if the opportunity came up.

There is a faint degree of approval for the poor bastards. They are getting hit a lot harder than they are hitting, but they are refusing to fall back and are continually reinforcing. Reports were also going up that they were attempting to go around the battle line for a flanking action. A good idea, but Ella had just received orders to join the battle. The enemy had been assessed to not have any heavier assets in play and thus the primary threat to the Mantis were the heavy weapons troopers. While a solid threat against the light mechs and potential medium mech killers in numbers, it was hoped that the shock of the mechs would disrupt their lines and cause an actual collapse of order.

Casting off their camouflage cloaks like titans shaking loose burying roots, the mechs rose from where they had been concealed and opened up with everything they had all at once. The Mantis lines exploded into fire as dozens of thermobarics airburst all around them. The enormous boom of heavy EM weapons all firing at once filled the air with crackling thunder, Mantis armour coming apart like tissue paper as the anti-vehicle rounds tore them apart, and the mechs began to march forward. The aliens were definitely starting to get their footing after taking hundreds of casualties, but the sudden introduction of the mechs sent them reeling, falling back from the trees they had been using for cover to get away from the combined power of the set up infantry and the advancing war machines. That would certainly be a long term tactical frustration: the Mantis had much higher mobility for medium assets, so they either had to be attacked with unsupported heavy assets or the infantry would have to chase them with less than adequate personal firearms.

Still, pushing the Mantis back just felt good, as did punting one of the bastards that tried to play dead to get close to her. She also noticed what appeared to be an entire Mantis fire team lying in a pile, their heads removed. She vaguely wondered who had been responsible for that, but focused on not advancing too fast or too far and getting cut off. The infantry was already using the opportunity to push forward to the former Mantis lines.

The message then went up that the Mantis in the air had made an abrupt change in tactics by dropping their third group of infantry outside of their initial LZ in an obvious flanking move. A call was put out for available assets to move to address this attempt. The Mantis would likely be less organized, but they would also be much freer to move... assuming that they did not run into an local hazards with the more advanced plantlife in the mostly unburned forest. Of course the Dandriss soldiers would also have to pick their way around such hazards.

Ella would...

[X] Move to assist the counter-flanking forces

"Knight-Captain Ella Stone, I am available for the counter-flanking. I can move quickly and bring a large amount of firepower to bear," Ella stated over the network, which was now more fragmented with her having moved. In the forest you had to set up wires and LOS lasercomms to get over the interference the trees did to radio. As such it took a few minutes before confirmation that she was to be assigned to that group got through to her.

Disengage

The withdrawal of elements was quite smooth, although the Mantis were aware enough of what was going on to attempt to contest the move, but that really required them to attempt an assault and they had obvious disadvantages there. Still, more men died in the ferocious storm of metal, although Ella suffered nothing worse than some scuffed paint as she walked her mech back to a point where she could sprint off to join the rally point. There she found the Indigo Hammer cavalry already prepared, having never made their planned attack. The network also indicated that the Authority elite would be joining them while the Jaeger lines reassembled to either receive the Mantis push or to assault them, depending on how the counter-flanking went. This left them somewhat sadly light on heavy assets as only one other medium mech had been assigned to the group, but the intent was more to prevent the enemy from succeeding in a flank than to kick their teeth in right away.

Taking off at full tilt, Ella felt synthetic tingles through her arms, a combination of the thrill of it all and her nervous system interpreting the ready charge stored in the EM cannons on her war machine's limbs. This would be a much harder fight, but also one where her abilities would be on much greater display. This was going to be fun.

The Mantis flank force was clearly still scattered when the counter-flanking team hit them, their chutes being too easily tangled in the canopy and thus having to be ditched sooner. While they had obviously been confident in their ability to survive the fall, it also took them longer to recover from the drop. They were as such still trying to recover when they were hit by a charge of wildlife with acid firing giants riding on top and heavily armed mechs and cyborgs literally raining fire down on them from above. Abandoning all pretense of stealth, Ella activated her war horn and let loose ominous bass bellows as got in amongst the aliens. She probably stomped and kicked as much as she shot, with the cavalry having an equally good time of it, their warbeasts trampling and goring the enemy with equal abandon.

While the Indigo Hammer troopers had a great time of it all, and the image of a roachrhino horn punching through armour to impale a Mantis seemed to be what caused them break and run into the forest with total abandon, Ella also observed an obvious weakness of the Indigo Hammer weaponry. They basically had no capacity to drop the Mantis quickly because they were utterly incapable of penetrating armour on impact, and unless the acid hit a weak point like a joint, seal, or the faceplate it did minimal damage. Oh, weight of fire could eat through the toughest parts of the armour and the burning did incredible things for breaking morale, but if a Mantis kept its head it could keep fighting even when completely engulfed. Something to definitely include in the debriefing.

Opening up a communications channel, it sounded like the main fight had ground to a stalemate once again, with the Mantis pushing hard to hold in place and keep the line from moving. Undoubtedly it was because they were expecting reinforcements and wanted to make sure the flank arrived in the right place.

Ella wondered if they heard the echoes of the victorious war cries as the counter-flank group reorganized for their own flanking move. She wondered if they heard the rhythmic shake of the roots as they began to advance through the forest, picking up speed once again as the dodged the terrain hazards, moving to strike the sides of the Mantis formation, now secure that they would not need to be held in reserve to counter the moves of the aliens.

The Mantis were just starting to push the defenders back under weight of fire when the cavalry arrived. Ella took a pair of rockets to her mech that staggered her and forced her to fall behind to cover the damaged section, but the cavalry charge caught the aliens completely by surprise, rampaging through their rear lines. While the trickiest part of a flank was always in avoid advancing too far and thus getting shot up by your own side by accident, the effectiveness of the move clearly caught the aliens by surprise as they tried to figure out how to respond. From the radio noise her sensors were picking up, she had a feeling that they were having trouble coordinating. Individual squads seemed competent enough, but command paralysis was definitely settling in over some parts of the group as they made muddled moves that failed to address either the main force or the flanking force adequately. Some groups seemed to have decided that they needed to fall back to reform their lines elsewhere, but other groups weren't offering support for the move and thus chaos reigned.

Mantis 10 + 30 - 25 Chaos+Damage = 15
Locals 17 + 45 - 5 Damage = 57
Ella 64 + 31 - 10 Damage = 85

The link up of the human groups could have gone more smoothly, but the Mantis were in such disarray that it was hard to account for their actions smoothly. Still, despite the damage Ella ended up moving further into their "territory" and catching sight of some large contraption that they had dropped into the area. Figuring that smashing it was a good idea, she launched a HEAT missile at it while dodging back into the forest. A second later there was a catastrophic explosion as whatever she had shot went up. Must have been a fuel and/or ammunition dump of some sort.

After that, the fight pretty much completely died from the Mantis. Some tried to maintain pockets of resistance as they were surrounded and systematically eliminated, but many just ran and more than a few seemed content to make suicidal runs against concentrations of troops with absolutely no support. The battle thus quickly wound down after that point.

Returning to Stonebridge, it quickly became obvious what the Mantis had been trying to do as the track maintenance sensors were picking up major vibrations on the rail lines. The air drop had evidently been to produce a flanking force for a thrust along the rails, the aliens clearly seeing the utility of the lines but having underestimated just how fast humans could respond in the forest in comparison to them. They had almost certainly expected their paratroops to last long enough for the main force to arrive, but it was already being speculated that someone had only pointed out to the higher ups that the towers for the rail lines couldn't actually be locked and thus they had to manually secure them after they had set out. Thus instead of arriving a few hours after the distracting paradrop began, the main force in the rail lines was doing to arrive in a day or two.

They might have even decided to let the paratroopers flap in the breeze for a few days under the expectation that they could keep them supplied from the air and that they wouldn't be obliterated within the first day.

After taking a fitful nap, Ella logged into the officer network to find out what the latest brainstorms were. While the really important meetings would be in person with the various major officers and Ella didn't really have an invite there, she could still participate in the planning churn and make her own preferences for assignment known later.

Preferred combat assignment...
[] Abandoned settlement along the way, urban combat
[] Strike the pillar guards, forest combat
