I mean Crane would probably be best to make that whole cultural revolution people want....but I usually vote Crane so something different this time.

The Crane would be the least likely place to manage a cultural revolution during this time period. Doji is still alive, which means that trying to anything other than follow her lead is likely to place you in danger.

Oh and is there any interest in playing an Imperial family?

Seriously guys, right now there's nothing major going on with the Pheonix. Isawa and Shiba are dead and we're unlikely to be that high on the totem pole. We could get some amazing prototype tattoos inked straight from the blood of Togashi himself! (Note: Side effects of experimental tattoos include but are not limited to blindness, loss of liver function, idealism and a general abundance of Disadvantages)

If we can convince Doji to take a different tack we can change a lot.

Good luck with that, Doji has Courtier(Manipulation): Yes. But Crane would be pretty interesting given the problems that are about to arise between the Lion and the Crane, and other [REDACTED] that need to be solved.

As a general note, I am going to allow you to choose any school you want in the corebook (baring Spider Clan) though depending on the school it might not have anything above IR3.

Dudes, this is perfect. A nice isolated region where we can kill gaijin and demons to our heart's content, and rise up to power and perhaps shape the reputation and appearance and conduct of Mantis. We get Navy Samurai, Jungle Samurai, Cannon Samurai, etc...

Don't be a bunch of studious nerds and go for Dragon or Phoenix! :p

[X] Dragon: The mysterious Dragon have retired to their vast mountain peaks in search of enlightenment following the disastrous end to the war. The Dragon were never very large, and many of the thousands of the bushi that followed Mirumoto never returned home being lost on the battlefield. However hope still remains for the future of the Clan, many still hear the call to north and the Agasha and Mirumoto have new followers everyday following tales of the Dragon Thunder's exploits and skill. Togashi remains the head of the Dragon clan with the Agasha and Mirumoto following him.

[X] Crab:
We fight and bleed and die every day so that the Empire might live. Never forget that it is the Crab who holds the line atop the Kaiu Wall against the Shadowland hordes! The very forces of Hell itself quail before our blades! All of you are nothing but children, playing at war as if you understood true sacrifice. You would all be dead, save that we are here!

Since we're going back in time maybe we can try and establish a dueling school among the Crab. I'd think that be fun and maybe better Crab duelists could help us get support from the Empire for our war versus the Shadowlands. Disclaimer: Not a L5R expert by any means so this idea may be ridiculous.

I just want to play as a Shugenja. We've got great combat/intrigue/courtly maneuvering quests already.

I want something different, and we don't have a single Shugenja MC of anykind yet, so I want to see how it could play out.

Being a Shugenja during the formation of the Empire means that many of the spells that were explicitly developed over the course of centuries would be unavailable. However, you would get training in ancient blood magic which may or may grow more and more like maho over time. In addition, you could gain recognition as a creator of spells (because a lot of them don't exist yet) and gain some status that way.

Hm, okay, sold on playing as a Phoenix shugenja. Edited my earlier vote accordingly.

(Helped that no one was voting for Scorpion anyway...)

My plan is as follows. Join the Dragon, become an Ise Zumi with an unnaturally long lifespan...somehow, join up with the Badger Clan when they're founded at the dawn of the second century, then use that as a spring board to conquer the fertile plain to the north of Rokugan. All it's got defending is Yobanjin! :p

Could you give some examples of Blood Magic that isn't connected or similar to Maho?

Most of it is similar to maho, just without a bunch of Jigoku taint flowing through it. There is magic in the blood after all.

In game terms, any shugenja from the first two chronological portions of the Dawn of the Empire must perform blood sacrifice in order to cast spells. The shugenja must cut or otherwise injure himself to draw blood, suffering Wounds in an amount equal to the Mastery Level of the spell. (This injury/bleeding should be treated as part of the Complex Action required to cast the spell.) Spells cast in this manner cannot normally benefit from Raises unless additional blood is spilled (the same amount for each Raise) to enhance the power of the sacrifice. Much early blood magic was ritual, with multiple spellcasters joining together and contributing their blood to the effort. The GM can represent this in any situation where two or more shugenja know the same spell and work together to cast it. In such circumstances, one shugenja should be designated as the "lead" caster; he receives a Free Raise for his Spell Casting Roll for each additional shugenja who joins in the ritual and sacrifices the appropriate blood. Ritualized voluntary blood sacrifice, often with the participation of non-spellcasters, was also used for a variety of general blessings and prayers, such as entreating the Fortunes for a good harvest. These are not really spells as such, although the GM can allow some minor mechanical benefits from them if it seems appropriate.

So....does anyone else want to be Merlin Rokugon Edition? Being a legendary spell craftier sounds kick ass to me.

For anyone on the fence about going Dragon.

Hello: The tattoos will be treated as kiho

Hello: And buyable with XP during character generation

Regardless of what school we're in, so long as we're in the Dragon and in the Togashi family we can buy Togashi tattoos. Magic blood-ink for everyone!

However Dragon/Togashi don't get magic, and the Togashi definitely don't get blood magic. Blood magic with a Kami's blood would end badly for everything you are near, and likely end in Jigoku nonsense. In addition the number of tattoos that the ise zumi have won't be as extensive as in the future, as some of them have not been developed. I will make up a list if the Dragon wins.

Ignore everything @DaBoyz said, I have looked at the game balance, and it makes more sense to have it be as an advantage than a kiho.

There will be an advantage Togashi's Tattoo [Spiritual] which conveys a single tattoo. It can be taken for 4 points by a Dragon, 5 by everyone else. Appropriate backstory will be necessary, random Ronin don't get tattoos from a Kami.

[] Mantis: We will become a Great Clan by our own strength, and we will be acknowledged! None know the seas like the Mantis, and none know the world beyond Rokugan as we do. From our hands come treasures unheard of, and with our ships we will defend the Empire from all who would threaten it. And if others call us arrogant, we laugh! To the bold go the greatest rewards!
I am not familiar with the time line. But shouldn't they be the Yorimoto at best?

Too bad they need to be uncovered therefore preventing us from effectively using armour.

Unless. . .

Will we be able to play from the Mirumoto Taoist Swordsman School? Theres some cool synergy there.
