This cant be stressed enough in Legend of the 5 Rings SWORDS ARE THE FRIKING SOULS OF SAMURAI.
Meaning that if we throw one of the other wakizashi we are quite literally THROWING SOMEONES SOUL AND THIS WOULD BE DISRESPECTING THE DEAD, which in L5R is really bad for your honor. Not to mention the possibility of vengeful ghosts.

...wakizashi are meant to be thrown though? They're literally forged with that use in mind, besides Hello has clarified that its perfectly honorable here.

I just find it hilarious that andy- the guy who's deliberately voted to throw our sword at our foes every time it's come up has finally somehow garnered support again just by changing the phrasing some and advocating we throw other people's swords. It's still just as fucking useless as it was then, and even if we don't lose honour for doing so we're still wasting time and running the risk we hit one of the bandits.

Again this is what the wakizashi is for. If it has some type of Reduction then the sword throwing might not work as well but it would at least keep us out of range.

The Relevent Passage in the Core if anyone was wondering:

"Thrown Weapons While bows are the most common ranged weapon, they are by no means the only ones employed by samurai. Numerous other weapons can be used at range, although generally their range is significantly less than that of a bow. Knives and wakizashi can be thrown using the Athletics Skill. Various spears can be thrown using the Spears Skill, and the Ninjutsu Skill allows a character to throw shuriken and tsubute as ranged weapons. Unless otherwise specified, thrown weapons add the wielder's Strength to the weapon's DR when determining damage, just as melee weapons do."

Wakizashi are perfectly serviceable projectile weapons in this scenario, and though I'm not terribly familiar with L5R's honor system, it would have to be pretty poorly optimized to prohibit pragmatic tactics.

The problem is that throwing a wakizashi is a complex action, it's either make a shitty throw with a sword and move 15 feet using a skills we have a whopping 1 in.

Or we move 60 feet and get in melee with the Gaki so next turn we can go ham on it with our Kenjutsu 3.

If it's in 30 feet then moving 15 and throwing the wakizashi is our best bet, if it's inside of 15 then just moving into melee is our best bet, if it's over thirty feet we're going to want to actually move as something other than a free action.

Karugus is right. @Hello could we get distances? Us to the bandits, Bandits to Gaki. Assuming we're in a straight line. If not could we also have us to Gaki?
And as I said we have allies, if your choice is using shitty throw actions while the Gaki kills our meatshields, or hitting it with our excellent Kenjutsu while it kills our meatsheilds, Kenjutsu is the better option by far.

But theres something that no one has brought up yet... While I haven't checked the bestiary Gaki from the back of the L5R book have superior invulnerability.

[Hello]

It took only a second for Hideo to rush into battle behind the bandits. Any reservations about the very distinct possibility of a horrifying death were swept away in a rush of energy that permeated his entire body. Bandits were small fry, honorless thieves who preyed on the weak. This towering twisted mass of flesh and bone that stood before them was a true challenge and represented an amazing opportunity to help the people of Rokugan sleep safely in their homes.

That is, if they could kill it.

The angry bandit had rushed the Gaki's position and earned a kick to the face for his troubles. As the largest bandit caught his falling leader Hideo positioned himself behind the skull face of the Gaki. The scent of blood and decaying flesh was almost overwhelming. It seemed like dozens of bodies had been stitched together to make the frame of this hulking monster and all of the faces that stuck out of its hide were howling in pain and bloodlust. Hideo felt the hairs on the back of his neck stick up when the deformed face of a girl turned its eyes on him and began to cry tears of blood.

Hideo reflexively stabbed the bleeding face, tearing a hole through the nasal passage and the eyes of the monstrous visage which burst like a putrid boil causing a river of red and white pus to pour from its side. The Gaki was beset on all sides but seemed unconcerned as it struck out at the bandits again and again. Its long arms were made up of swollen flesh which were lacerated every time it swung a crushing blow but the skull faced monster gave no sign it noticed the cuts.

The next few moments became a haze of gore and screams as the men drove their blades into the flesh again and again to no avail. The horrifying twisted kami paid little attention to the scratches dealt by their pitifully small weapons and instead seemed to play with the angry bandit like a particularly demented cat.

It would bat about with its arms while the wounded warrior rushed around the deadly limb before attempting to close what passed for its hands around him but he was much too fast to be caught. Hideo continued his assault on the body of the monster but past the initial layer of flesh it seemed to have a hardened caprice of bone. As the sweat which beaded on his forehead began to mingle with the blood that was held in by the bandage it was hard for Hideo not to despair. There seemed to be no end to the undying flesh and none of their attacks were giving the monster any pause.

The first sign that they were having any effect at all was the sudden roar that echoed out when the leader bandit managed to score a hit on the skull affixed to the top of the hulking beast. His sword had barely scratched the tip of the jaw but the monster reacted with surprising force. Throwing its arms out it scattered the fighters before freezing in place for a moment. Hideo had a bad feeling about his positioning and began to back up quickly to avoid any sudden moves.

His premonition was proven correct when bone shards began to eject themselves from the back and front of the gaki, but his placement had been a little off. One of the flying shards smashed into his shoulder pad with great force sending him spinning to the ground.

The largest bandit had not been so lucky and took one of the shards to the gut causing a low moan to pour from his mouth. This scene drove the uninjured bandits to fight with even more zeal, seeming to strike without end at the ball that made up the middle section of the nightmarish creature. But this time the gaki was no longer content to play with its food.

The angry bandit was taken by surprise when the huge skull that dominated its top section suddenly raced along the flesh of its arm to strike at him. While he did manage to reflexively drive his sword into one of the glowing eye sockets it came at great cost as the jaws bite down into the flesh of his chest. The mountain's roar of rage and sudden introduction of a flurry of steel kept the gaki from closing in for the kill but the damage was done. The leader laid on the grass with a portion of his chest caved in.

The roar had galvanized Hideo to get off the ground and return to striking the back section of the gaki in the hopes eventually causing it enough damage to end its hold over the bodies it consisted of. By now every inch of his body was covered in blood and his hair was matted to the back of his neck. Each swing came slower and Hideo had to be more judicious with his waning strength.

A horrifying scream erupted from the now returned skull which was answered by the bandit on the clearing floor. Hideo paused in his hacking as the bandit's dimly lit face turned a puce color before steam started roiling out of his mouth and nose. The smell of cooked meat wafted over to Hideo's position and he vomited down the front of his robes. No one could do anything as the jaw of the gaki unhinged once again as it moved to stand over the bandit leader's body. The crunch of bone and flesh was enough to drive Hideo into a second frenzy of strikes.

From there the fight became even more desperate as it became clear that they were no longer fighting to revenge their fallen comrade, but for their very lives. The naginata wielder, the giant, and Hideo all began to coordinate strikes on the gaki. A strike by the mountain would lead the way for Hideo to rush in and deal extra damage while the willowy armsman would draw a line of deadly steel across the side of the monster.

But it wasn't to last. Despite their best efforts they were only human and eventually their wounds caught up with them. The spearman was a fraction of a second too late and took a tumble when a third arm snaked off the gaki's body. While Hideo moved to take advantage of the monster's sudden distraction the mountain of flesh's eyes lit up and it let out another scream. The thin figure on the ground was briefly in concert with the skull before being abruptly cut off as the monster stomped on his head.

At it came down to the last two men against the unyielding wall of flesh the mountain shared a look with Hideo. In his eyes Hideo could only see despair and resignation. There was no hope.

Something burst inside of Hideo. Despite being sure that the bandits deserved to die, he had just spent what felt like a lifetime fighting beside them. That meant something, and there was no way he was going to let their sacrifices be in vain.

He tunnel visioned on the skull sitting on the top of the gaki's dilapidated form while pulling into a run. He turns into the wind as he sprints up to the giant's back and leaps off his shoulders. The time he spends in the air flying towards the gaki's gaping maw seems at once terribly slow and way too fast. His blade flashes as he passes over the top of the monster's shoulder and Hideo slams into the ground in a crouch behind the gaki. The next few seconds are charged with tension as Hideo waits for a sign, any sign.

The gaki's skull slowly slides over and falls off its form as the entire bunch of flesh grinds to a halt and collapses into a heap. The only sound is the steady drip of the blood from the mountain's wound.

Hideo has won (somehow) and due to his experience with dealing death gains +2XP. Fighting with the ronin against the gaki and winning (even more surprising) shows great life experience, +6XP. That pulls him up to 10XP in total to spend or bank however you guys feel.

You also gained +2 points of honor for each daisho collected (you guys got 4 and gained a koku) and then lost some honor for sneaking up on a sentry, -3 points, and then you stayed and fought a Gaki to the bitter end so +5 points for that. Meaning you gained an entire rank of honor just for killing a bunch of people. Go you.

If you figure out a way to let people know you did this then I will give you guys some glory points, but as it is the only person who knows what went down aside from you is currently bleeding on the ground with bone stuck in his gut.

Oh and DB brought up buying Touched by Gaki-do. While I think it is fully possible, I am not sure that having compassion and having violent dreams about killing people leads to psychological stability in the long term. But that is up to you guys.

The gaki was feeding off of bloodlust by the way. You didn't actually kill it either, it is effectively immortal so long as it can flee back to Gaki-do which it was able to do. But it certainly won't come back soon or as strong so good job there.

I'm for banking the XP and buying Stamina 3 when we have the XP we need for that, IIRC that's 12. That would get us Earth 3 and increase our wounds.
However I know the system only from following the various quests that use it here, so I'm not sure how good an idea that is.

Traits cost 4 times the level you are buying (Reflexes 4 costs 16XP, Willpower 3 costs 12XP) and are pretty much defining features of your character. Someone with high Willpower but low Intelligence is headstrong and willing to do what needs to be done regardless of the consequences. They also effect things mechanically, higher Agility means you hit more and faster, higher Intelligence means you can succeed at lore/investigation checks more and so on. Your traits are bundled together into different sub sections (Fire, Earth, Water, Air, Void) and those also confer mechanical benefits in combat and otherwise.

Generally combat in L5R means picking some kind of niche and going with it. Those who pick Earth can outlast anything. Those with Air never get hit. Those with Fire hit hard and fast. Those with Water dance around and strike suddenly. And Void is pretty much dropping a single perfect strike before your opponent has a chance to do the same. To be honest the combat system is stupidly complicated so I have omitted a lot of why these strategies work out against a variety of opponents so long as one has a good foundation.

You can also buy skills, they cost the level you are buying them at. My earlier post explains what they mean.

Touched by Gaki-Do is a unique opportunity here though and it can act as a stand in for Earth 3, hell its probably better if we end up fighting a bunch of mook opponents. It also has some absurd synergy with our IR 6 for what its worth. If we're willing to break open the bank I'd propose something like this

This would bring us up to IR 2 and meshes with what we've been doing recently, though if you want to skip on the skills so we don't completely reset our bank for Earth 3 that's understandable. We also get one extra Reduction from this thanks to our IR 1.
