I think so? I mean, it shows up in basically every anime that has a scene at the beach.
General notes on the comiket part: This is basically reference central for the anime. Notable characters include Frau Rabbit and the author's comic avatar in one scene.
I'm not sure what the cultural significance is, but it's not just an anime thing. I did the watermelon thing myself when I was in Japan. I think it's kind of like pinatas. Only instead of candy you eat the watermelon. Actually, that's exactly what it was like. The blindfold, stick, turned around, then trying to crush it, and eating the contents afterwards... yep, totally watermelon pinata. And why watermelons? Well, melons are apparently meant for special occasions or presents or something. I have seen modestly-sized, artfully packaged melons sell for over 5000 yen, or $50. Compare that to the U.S. where you can buy a giant watermelon for less than $10, and even that's a bit overpriced.
Edit: Found a wikipedia article for it, Suikawari.
This is the one with the objectionable Lucoa stuff, right?
Oh here's Lucoa.
Oh so this is where the shotacon stuff starts coming into play. I'm mentally prepared for this.
This isn't so bad right yet. Maybe everyone was over exaggerating?
And his name is literally shouta. wow. thats like the serial killers name being Mr. Merdor.
WOAH WOAH WHAT THE FUCK LUCOA. NO. NO. YOU DON'T DO THAT WITH A KID WHO LOOKS BARELY OLDER THAN 13. BAD DRAGON.
AND HERE'S THE CAPSLOCK. THE FUCK, PERSON WHO MADE THIS. WHAT MAKES THIS ACCEPTABLE. IS IT ANOTHER JAPAN THING?
Lucoa's swimsuit is less a swimsuit and more a couple pieces of fabric desperately trying to keep her nipples covered. I would think that there was supposed to be at least some form of support, but not for dragons I guess.
Heh. Good job, beach lady.
Lucoa continues to be creepy.
What the fuck?
Lucoa, put some damn clothes on.
As the OP goes through, I just realized we still haven't met fish dragon, who's shown in an office a couple of times without horns (at least I think it's her), which is weird that a character important enough to be in the OP isn't shown until over halfway through the series.
Oh yeah, for the bit where Kanna's looking at the glass and saying "I wanted to...", someone did a lipreading and said she was most likely saying "lick her", which as a dragon she sees as something friends do (like what Tohru mentioned a while back).

It's 4PM in Auckland. This post is brought to you by the letter M, for Maid, Monstergirl, and Mailbox, one of which I hit this morning. In other news here's the next post.
So they 're heading to school, I assume, and Saikawa invites Kanna over for a playdate.
She also says they can invite Tohru, which is an idea that can't possibly go wrong. It seems their maid wants to meet her, which is another thing that can't go wrong. Kanna agrees.
I screencapped this perfectly.
Tohru looks displeased as they walk up to the house.
I remember in some PMMM thing (Maybe PMAS?) where they comment on how big Madoka's house is. Is this similar? I'm used to the idea of most urban Japanese people living in apartments about Kobayashi's size because they have to cram 14 million people in a relatively small space.
They come in, and Saikawa is pretty happy to see them.
Kobayashi has a small freakout over how old she looks if someone think's she looks that old, to which Tohru responds that humans are all pretty young compared to her, which doesn't help but prevents more freakout long enough for someone to walk down the stairs.
It's love at first sight.
Her name is Georgie, and she's Saikawa's sister, which was a manga thing that I don't think is mentioned. After Tohru's above comment, Kobayashi goes all shadowed forehead and delivers a brief maid lesson, but since she isn't drunk and with the guy who's name I forgot over the last week it isn't an awkward and horrible thing.
Georgie is impressed. They have a moment...
...which Tohru doesn't like.
Tohru and Kobayashi accept the offer to go talk shop with Georgie, or, more precisely, Kobayashi does and grabs Tohru, who is in a state of bliss such that she no longer is capable of disagreeing.
Tohru, as I've said previously, has lots of great faces.
After Kobayashi, Tohru, and Georgie go into the human maid's room, Kanna and Saikawa go into hers. They discuss what to do.
They settle on Twister. There is absolutely no way this can end poorly.
Fun fact, this game was banned from the youth group I used to be a part of after two separate incidents, the first of which was where a guy accidentally got face first in a girl's chest, and the second was when another guy wasn't paying attention and headbutted another dude in the nuts hard enough he puked. Both were pretty funny to watch, to the less mature eighth grade me.
Everything goes exactly as expected, and I will not apologize for the next picture or my attempt to edit it in MSP.
Saikawa desperately tries to get them to play something that won't result in accidental cuddling, and then we cut to the maid room.
They discuss tea for a bit, then Kobayashi notices the china's pretty nice.
What terrible things will happen to the Cosplay Dragon Maid when a pair of Maid Otakus get going? Find out tomorrow, probably, which barring procrastination should have enough free time for two or three posts.
Given how often Crunchyroll posts a random screencap of one on their twitter feed for no apparent reason, you're not the only one who thinks that. Of course, they also love to post Kanna being cute, so...
I recall that it was mentioneded at the end of this section, and as I've never read more than semi-random, scattered pages of the manga...
What isn't revealed in either version is that "Georgie" is actually named Nae; that came from the anime's website.

Actually, I believe Saikawa accidentally calls her sister by her real name during the New Year's episode. As a side note, that was when I figured out (read "guessed") that Georgie and Saikawa were really sisters.
