More and more I feel spoiled by Stirland. Van Hal kept a tight council and his advisors, by and large, were good at their jobs. Silverport… not so much.
By and large, except for the first Marshal he had to shoot for padding the records with hundreds of fake soldiers, embezzling their pay and hollowing out the army? :)

But I grant your point. Stirland had the advantage -- okay, Stirland had the silver lining to a massive disadvantage -- of sitting next to Sylvania, which meant people generally knew not to screw around too much because it was dangerous. Silverport, on the other hand, sits on a major river fork raking in the trademoney, and doesn't perceive any similar threat from its neighbors. To the north, what looks like a nation of rentacops LARPing as Sparta. To the south, what looks like a bunch of monarchist imbeciles currently in their sixth year of civil war over the kingship.

@Exmorri Something that's been tickling in the back of my head for a while, what do any of the capital 'G', great Overworld Gods know about the appearance and existence of the Abominations? Surely an event of such catastrophic scale must have reached one of the Incarnae-equivalents, even if it might not have reached the big man himself.
It wasn't all that catastrophic. The Abominations didn't even destroy the city! ;) But you're right in thinking that word did eventually reach Heaven. At first they thought it was just particularly powerful rogue cultivators of some sort, so initial response was just to notify your former city god (you know, the one that got removed for dereliction of duty) with a request to round up some good-aligned cultivators, here's a heavenly writ of authority to help you along, please get this sorted out.

When it became clear that there was worse stuff going on, the celestial gods sent in a heavenly strike force and smote one of the Abominations' blasphemous secret research labs somewhere out in the backwoods - the Abominations knew enough not to do that kind of potentially explosive research in the city they wanted to rule. And when I say "worse stuff" and "blasphemous", I mean something vaguely like this mechanic from Exalted:

Blasphemy: Charms with this keyword snarl the Tapestry when activated in Creation or Yu-Shan, triggering alerts in the Loom of Fate and the Realm Defense Grid's central control room that each display the Charm's basic effect, the Infernal's Essence rating and the location where the Charm was activated. How the forces of Heaven respond generally depends on available resources and the relative threat posed by the incursion, but any use of these Charms invites some possibility of intervention by Sidereal demon hunters or their often-unwitting pawns in Creation.

Then there was some "Did we get them? I think we got them. No, wait, there's another one." followed by smiting a solo Abomination who'd taken over one of the Petty Princedoms and erected a mile-high stele to their own glory there, some comparing notes and garbled reports, and offscreen stuff that would be a bit spoilery to tell you about at this point. The Abominations disappeared mysteriously and the celestial gods looked at each other and basically declared the problem solved so they could get back to their myriad other things to do.

Okay, so as far as I'm aware, our information relay capacity is basically runner on a horse, which is too far to administrate directly, and vulnerable to bandits.
Pretty much. You could also look into setting up a semaphore/heliograph.

It seems like now that we've somewhat stemmed the financial bleeding and actually have a source of somewhat capable subordinates it might be time to start working on larger projects like a central bank or maybe some form of insurance. Both of these would provide our merchants with a massive advantage over competitors.

Nooooo, next turn would be the time to diplomance Bridge, Wisdom, and Ascension, to reduce our competent clerk rep. We are so close to having a minor diplo status with three great clans.

I'm planning on having marble tell void he wants an assignment he won't be expected to fix in half a year, so he can focus on his star metal and reputation. And so we can use slow and steady.

Well, that was popular. Out of curiosity, do you wish to lead this secret organization yourself? And then dedicate it to reverse-engineering the tools and weapons of the Abominations as well as their lore? Possibly even militarize the secret organization in expectation of the Abominations' return?

Well, when you put it that way, how could I possibly vote any other way?

At the moment, none of the plans make me happy. None of them balance the audit the way I would like, and I'm not a fan of completely halting our embezzlement. Dropping it to 10g sounds right to me, particularly if we clear away our debt.

Demon portals sounds like the kind of problem that survive the cause
They don't stay open permanently, if that's what you're worried about. See the study action in turn 6:

The fourth world is barred and forbidden, but can be briefly breached with certain inauspicious deeds and rituals. The Book of Gates sets out just how worryingly easy that is.
(...)
"First, because the practices described in the Book of Gates do not strictly speaking summon demons. They merely open gates, as the name suggests. And the gates are temporary."
(...)
"the demon has to be paying attention to notice the gate before it closes again."
Still a bad idea for many other reasons though.

[X] Plan Removing Impurities w/ Stop Embezzling
-[X] Pick between 1 and 6 actions to spend on watching present spending
--[X] 2 action
-[X] Pick between 0 and 6 actions to spend on reading past records
--[X] 2 actions
-[X][Action] Study Smithing. Zara has blessed you with particular competence and understanding here.
-[X] Study Old Tongue and Three's booklet with Wolf Three.
-[X][Free Social] Socialize and build connections with one of the great clans of Silverport. (Bridge)
-[X] Pay down remainder of debt immediately. (-69g)
-[X] Stop Embezzling

So this is pretty much as the plan name suggests, the same as Removing Impurities but with us fully stopping our embezzling. The reason I went for this is as an example to set prior to spending four actions on this exact thing, because it could be used as leverage in the future even if it's unlikely, and our boss has a Vigilance blessing on him. I also think it's quite wise narratively as if we don't I feel there is a near inevitable follow up vote on what to do with people who are doing the exact same thing we are, particularly if they are aware of us having done so in the past when it was more blatant.

If we want more money legally via our office we can just do as past stewards have done and either get a pay rise, or have the state subsidize our research reducing our expenses.

Edit - Swapped Mirrormetal for studying with Wolf Three.

Eh, it also doesn't have the action of studying the book with Three as I would have preferred, but it stops the embezzlement at least. If our suspicion is correct and Shining Void knows (or at least has a suspicion) about our embezzlement, just reducing it to undetectable amounts is kind of redundant, as it has been detected already.

You know what, I kind of agree with you on your first point. The only upcoming expense we're aware of is the trading mission opportunity cost, so I think it would be fine to swap promote mirrormetal out for it this turn. Having a bad ending then stopping the lessons just feels slightly wrong, and if it feels wrong then I imagine there may be a relationship point drop.

Not in that the portals stick around, in that things pass in and our while its open and THAT has consequences which stick around

Let's lay low for a while. If we need to lower our expenses further we might want to shift the clerks salary from us to the palace. After that we should be able to stay in the green due to mirror sales.

I guess we can not have any weakness for enemy to attack us if we want to advance our clan to great clan status.

Stop embezzling then we can become normal clerk like everyone think of us.

Spread knowledge to scholar is not so bad but I feel this is too much 40k on open gate to the daemon.

If everyone and their mother can open gate then humanity is doom.

... I forgot to change my original plan to this, so I'd just change my vote instead.
Further 10g/turn is not a high price for removing burning trash out of our backyard.
And it does feel wrong to leave Three alone like that. Just hoping it'll turn out better than last time.
