In the Wake of Monsters - an Advisor's Quest

Turn 7 Council – 772
More and more I feel spoiled by Stirland. Van Hal kept a tight council and his advisors, by and large, were good at their jobs. Silverport… not so much.

External campaigns seem to be going well. But at the expense of ignoring stuff within the city.

Might have missed our chance at networking. Or perhaps not, rumor and opinion are ficle and ever changing.

Glad we didn't (further) alienate Three.

The wrong question. Better question: Does he like us enough to accept simple not embezzling anymore?

On the Lore issue… better to poke it in the light than to let it fester in the dark.

[X] [Lore] Knowledge is power, and light destroys lies. Distribute it to scholars for thorough investigation.

[X] Plan Fixing Problems
-[X] [Action] Pick between 1 and 6 actions to spend on watching present spending
--[X] 3
-[X] [Action] Go and help out at your experimental forge. It'll surely go better with both your vision and your new understanding to assist.
-[X] [Action] Go out and promote mirrormetal. Find uses for it. Look for more buyers. Advertise. Hustle.
-[X] [Free Action] Socialize and build connections with one of the great clans of Silverport. (Gold)
-[X] [Action] Slow and Steady. Use an action to take your time to think and plan properly before you do anything else. Other planned actions this turn get a bonus die to their rolls. Cannot be used if overworking.
-[X] [Finance] Stop embezzling.
-[X] [Finance] Pay down remainder of debt immediately. (-69g)

We have been put on notice. If we don't stop embezzling now then next turn Mr Blessed With Vigilance will stop up directly. As such we need to promote the mirrors to make up the short-fall. 3 actions on our job, all focused on current offenders. Partly self-serving, partly because we have kicked out a whole bunch of staff and I don't want to waste time finding out that former employees were stealing. Void wants loyalty, not recovering lost revenue.
Starmetal will cover a multitude of sins.

Good point about investigating current embezzlers instead of past ones.

There isn't ever going to be a good time to really dedicate ourselves to promoting Clan Avalanche for great clan status, so we might as well dive in this turn when we really don't have that much on our plate to worry about. Since we already overworked by skimping on food and sleep a few turns ago, I don't want to risk pushing Marble to the breaking point. Better to miss some family functions in the pursuit of improving the clan's status, especially since we're finally going to get our uncle off our back.

Edit: changed embezzlement from reducing to 10g to canceling all together.

Because it's essential the same thing without slow and steady.

However, I'm probably going to change plans later. Right now, I'm having a late lunch.

Edit: made change to plan. If anything we could drop the prep work for integrating Helmsland since we have no guarantee that will pan out.
Firstly- my original plan just doesn't have Slow and Steady anymore, so no need to change it's name.
Secondly- I don't like Helmsland either... and looks like others are not afraid of annoying Void... so yeah, let's maybe change it.

Suggesting switching to either helping out with our experimental forge (cause Zara helps with that too), or learning Old Tongue (2/3 way there, and we were offered a spot on the secret organization, even if OOC).
@RookDeSuit, @Marlin - thoughts?

I don't think spreading the knowledge around is anywhere near a good idea. Regular scholars getting their hands on knowledge of the kind detailed in the Book of Gates seems like a Bad End. We don't know what other surprises the Abominations left us, including surprises in human shape.

Also, we kind of have to take the successor action to studying the book with Three, considering the way we broke off the last session. We're concerned that the Abominations left a breadcrumb trail, and Three is struggling, so we can hardly leave her alone now.
If we're voting for a secret organisation to study the Abomination lore, I'm assuming we'll play a part in its founding, so getting to the bottom of this and clearing things with Three seems even more important in that light.

"Not studying it can only leave us vulnerable." says Three. "Even if the Demon World was tightly closed in elder days, something - and I suspect it is connected to the Abominations, considering how many demons accompanied them - must have been prying it open of late. It is certainly very open now."

I wonder how she came to that conclusion. The book points out that even before the Abominations came opening gateways to the Demon World was easy. Why does she think that it's more open now? I wonder what else the Abominations told her when they told her that humans could also pass through gates to the Demon World.

@Exmorri Something that's been tickling in the back of my head for a while, what do any of the capital 'G', great Overworld Gods know about the appearance and existence of the Abominations? Surely an event of such catastrophic scale must have reached one of the Incarnae-equivalents, even if it might not have reached the big man himself.

I would approval vote for these if they didn't include embezzlement.

Something to keep in mind: risk of discovery. If Void already knows, which seems likely, then he isn't going to forget just because we hide it better.

Lol. Yeah, I see how what I did would be weird.

So best thing might be to quit our embezzlement, but we have to hustle the values of our mirrormetal. Maybe, even physical help the forge.

Hmmm... No doubt you're right. It'll be tight, but if we work at the mirrormetal forge after spending a turn promoting it we might be able to come out on top. I'll edit my plan to remove embezzlement all together.

Remove or stop altogether?

Stop altogether, my bad for the confusion.

Yeah, I am jumping on the no stealing bandwagon. It'll make Marble a truly pure soul. :p
Also, changing preparations for Helmsland for mirrormetal selling. We'll need that money now.

Few words on finances:

Reducing embezzlement and paying the debt causes us a loss of 79g.
We got +33g last turn, but 21g from mirrormetal was caused by great luck:

Assuming we somehow get the same results from mirrormetal selling (would need an action for that), we'd still lose 46g this turn. That'll leave us with 61g.
Our new upkeep will cost 63g, and new gains 60+?g, most likely around 10-20g.
So around +10g every turn, and 60g in savings.

In summary- not bad, but Marble's finances may become tighter than usual.
I recommend spending an action for mirrormetal forge, at least for this turn.

Edit: Thinking about it, Zara's blessing may be more of a dwindling currency, while our savings aren't in trouble (yet).
I guess mirrormetal advertising can wait, but only for a short time.
Your math is wrong. We're paying 35g a turn on the debt, and our total upkeep is 88. This means that once the debt is gone, our total upkeep will be 53, not 63. If we cut down to 10g a turn, we're positive before the ? from mirrormetal. Admittedly, only by seven per turn, but we're only at +12 per turn now before the ?, so it's not that much of a loss compared to where we are now.

Hm. If we pay down the debt now, 60g +mirrormetal is barely enough to cover our costs, plus maybe 10-15 g of surplus?
We won't be able to make any heavy moves to develop in personal interests, though, due to low surpluses, and upkeep costs. Starmetal will cash out when it finishes development, but that'll be a while, and until then, we have a small budget for that.

I'm okay with cutting embezzlement entirely, but I want that smithing training, I want that work to hit a breakthrough, and none of the plans with a chance are doing that.

The budgetvwill be tight but positive
You hear Ebuskun whispering under her breath, "Conquer theeeeem."
This line made the update incidentally. Heh.
[Offscreen: Someone tried to pull a clever trick by springing some of your new exam questions on Void, he aced his roll and answered easily. Phew. That could have gone badly, if he'd failed he would have been embarrassed and blamed you. But instead, he got to look knowledgeable and approves of you picking good questions. Free +1 opinion!]
Oh huh, someone's pulling intrigue against us.

"And one other thing." he says, giving no indication that he's noticed your thoughts. "Hopefully in the not too distant future Helmsland will become a tributary province of Silverport. Think a bit about what sort of preparations you might want to make for that. I imagine some administrative changes may be required."
Okay, so as far as I'm aware, our information relay capacity is basically runner on a horse, which is too far to administrate directly, and vulnerable to bandits.

We'd need the following infrastructures:
-Messenger service or ministry dedicated to relaying messages and goods. It wouldn't need a state monopoly, only state backing, the small party merchants who can't afford their own caravans will gladly make use of it for a fee.
--We'd also want to work with the spymaster to piggyback their observers onto this.

-We'd need local offices to carry out administration, but far from oversight they're liable to do their own thing. We'd need a Ministry of Audits authorized to monitor and report back regarding accounts, with personnel on some form of rotation.

-Lower rank clerks have to be hired locally, we can't afford the overhead of shipping them back and forth, but higher rank officials CAN be trained and vetted locally for reliability and loyalty before being dispatched.

-We'd want to divide power a bit. Make it a bit harder for them to go independent by splitting authority across a double or triple signature approval at the highest levels.
