An example of an Old Empire ship. These fuckers use what are called Dark Shards to power their ships. The issue with Dark Shards is that it is corruptive and is toxic to mechions. Prolonged exposure to Dark Crystal alters the brain chemistry of mechions, slowly driving them insane. This is why the Old Empire is impossible to reason with, and why they are so blood thirsty. Dark Shard Reactors tend to corrupt the ship they are mounted on. This is why many Imperial Ships are covered with what looks like dark growths, or tendrils of shadows. Eventually, an Imperial ship will be completely overwhelmed and will only eventually absorb other dark shard infused ships.

Um, Dark Matter is literally everywhere in space. It makes up the overwhelming portion of the weight of the entire universe or even most galaxies.

Also aside from being undetectable to present methods Dark Matter shouldn't be anything special.
Ok, it could have unique capabilities we don't know of but making your people weak against Dark Matter is the equal of their death as an interstellar species.

Okay, perhaps I should elaborate. This isn't that kind of dark matter. It's more like dark energon from Transformers Prime. It was discovered in a long abandoned mining facility from a long dead race by the Old Empire at the beginning of the Mechion Civil War.

My energy generation methods are perfectly safe and eco-friendly o long you aren't misusing them.
Conversion Reactors are basically the composite of all nuclear research which can generate energy from nearly any common material.
Zero-Point Energy Extractors consume the space-time itself and since every cubic meter of vacuum has the energy of around 10113 Joules which is a near-inexhaustible source especially since planets, stars and everything are on a constant move thus so does the space changes.
Granted, when compared to each other Conversion Reactors are extracting energy much faster than ZPEEs (so long you constantly feed the reactor, at least).
