fifteen minutes later, Kensuke knocks on her door. :p
Looks like A&T crosswired into here for a minute! :)
Misato's head sunk even deeper against the table's surface. "Why...Just...why. I'm hot. I'm drunk. I'm easy. Why am I only surrounded by gentlemen!? Can't there be someone in the whole of Tokyo Three that wants to ravish me without care!?"
Poor Misato. Kaji, where the Hell are you? If Ritsuko Akagi can get married and have a kid, why the Hell are you keeping poor Misato waiting? A girl has needs, you know.

Poor Shinji, too. Misato's feeling like a Christmas Cake, Rei is even more deadpan and admonishing you about staring at her underwear, and Asuka is... stuck in Loli Land? I dunno, but your usual favorite women are all degrees of not-likely.

...Poor Asuka. I bet she finds it hard to find a date that's not... kinda skeevy. I hope she isn't just here for a cameo. If she's not a Pilot, I'm not sure how she can stay in the plot so far.

The fish of course means PenPen is really behind the whole thing. :V

Not to get too far off topic, but have you ever read "Evangelion Unplugged", wherein PenPen is a Tony Montana-esque drug kingpin? It's pretty great. That whole era of Eva fiction was wonderful - it had a real liveliness to it.

I think? Was that the one where Kensuke was an accidental porn star and DJ Croft got treated as he should?

Chapter Seventeen: "Solamen miseris socios habuisse doloris."
Chapter Seventeen: "Solamen miseris socios habuisse doloris."

The morning hours of Tokyo Three were relatively deserted of people. He liked that. He could jog in peace without anyone disturbing him, and by the time he was done and dressed, he could go about his second favorite pastime. Playing shogi while watching the construction workers build yet one more skyscraper.

Kozo Fuyutsuki moved a piece forward, and then took a sip of his green tea.

He had training in the afternoon with the Evangelion, but during the morning hours he was free to do as he pleased, and he did not like sleeping in. Staving off the boredom by playing shogi near a construction site wasn't what he had thought would happen to his free hours, but he wasn't displeased by it.

"How are Angels predicted?" Shinji asked, moving a piece himself.

"The Magi System runs calculations on their current positions, and whenever one activates, they forewarn Nerv High Command," Fuyutsuki replied. "It is unfortunate that we cannot take the battle to them, but they are capable of great feats, like hiding within the deepest of sea trenches, lurk in the core of our planet, or chill out in space," he mused for a brief instant, and then made his move. "Or stay silent in another dimension entirely."

"I never heard of Angels running amok the rest of the world," Shinji mused. "Honestly, the past events were covered up as a great volcanic explosion-but it seems that whatever the Angels seek is inside Nerv," he hummed as he made his move in answer, "but if they seem to harbor such hate for mankind-why do they not all simply rampage? They would bring about the destruction of humanity that much sooner if they did."

"That is a bizzarre thing, is it not?" Fuyutsuki agreed, "Thirteen years ago, the Angel attack devastated Tokyo and its people, but it did not immediately result in the death of the Angel. As a final measure, it was encased in Bakelite, where it slowly choked to its death in a manner of years," his eyes moved to the board, and he drummed his fingers on a nearby piece, before thinking the better of it and moving another one entirely. "Another Angel attack in that period would have been devastating, but as if by magic, or miracle, none attacked, nor seemed to care about us. Although we were at our weakest...they did not move."

"That's not the act of a beast," Shinji mumbled. "Even if they had things like 'a right to hunt down humans', they'd move in once the previous predator was shot down, or at least try to infringe in its territory."

"Angels do not think like we humans do," Fuyutsuki said. "Perhaps that is a grace onto itself. Whatever the reason, once it died the Angel you and pilot Ayanami faced activated, and began marching towards Tokyo Three."

"From what I could gather, the Angels also seem to relish in the destruction of human life," Shinji said as he made his move in the end, knowing fully well he was granting a piece to Fuyutsuki, but baiting him in a very simple trap. "But if that was the case, then why wouldn't they attack other places? They can't be both mindless and intelligent-it doesn't make much sense."

"Perhaps they do not want to kill all of humanity," Fuyutsuki answered. "Perhaps, they just want to kill those who would stop their advance and enslave the rest." He moved a piece, ignoring the easy bait. "After all, there is a difference between conquering and razing."

Shinji looked at the condition of the Shogi board and at his forces. Well, what remained of them after the last few turns had steadily decimated his capabilities of winning. This was now merely a matter of losing graciously. "So, conquerors who enjoy murdering Nerv personnel and reach for Tokyo Three to battle against the Evangelions?"

"One of the most flaunted theory among the experts in their fields is that each Angel is indeed one such 'Lord of War' of whatever race they belong to," Fuyutsuki said, "and whichever 'Lord' defeats the defense that is Nerv will acquire full control of the planet for their species. At least, that is what the internet says," his old man's lips twitched, "Experts indeed."

"Really?" Shinji asked, trying to hold back a chuckle. "The Internet?"

"The Magi System actually does not dislike the infinite amount of potentiality that a skewed line of thinking might bring to the fray," Fuyutsuki said grimly. "It seeds off into the net specific questions and then verifies whether or not they can be possible, before further refining its algorithm to discard those that would not work and adding new data every second," the old man watched the board with amusement, "It is still your move to make, Shinji."

With a dreadful sigh, Shinji moved the first of many pawns that would end up dying. "How many Angels are there still to defeat that the Magi know of?"

"From seven to eleven," Fuyutsuki replied. "Perhaps more, perhaps less," he ate another piece of Shinji's during his turn. "Whether there might be more, whether there might be less, sometimes the sensors pick up two where there is only one, sometimes a hundred where there is none," he grimaced. "The Magi as a system is nearly flawless, like any other system created by flawed beings."

"One thing I learned during my university period is that 'Computers are dumb. They do precisely what you tell them to do, even if it means running around in circles forever'," Shinji mused.

"So you went to university?" a female voice asked, making Shinji blink and look to the side, where past the chain fence stood the form of Asuka. She was wearing a pair of thick jeans without any silly 'cuts', and the hard helmet on her head firmly tucked her hair in. She wore thick glovers and equally thick protective vestments, just like all the other workers did. "Where did you go? Tokyo?"

"Kyoto," Shinji answered, "Then I moved to Europe-to Sheffield-"

"Ah, Sheffield! I went there, and also at Munich. And...pretty much everywhere else," Asuka nodded quite cheekily. "The more degrees you get, the less exams you have to take since some cross over," she winked. Shinji smiled awkwardly. Was she for real? "What? You're looking like you don't believe me!" she turned her gaze towards Fuyutsuki, "Come on Kozo! Tell him! I, the great, most wise, highly mature Asuka earned more degrees than I could ever have a need of!"

"That...That is indeed true," Fuyutsuki said with a sigh. "And rather than accept an offer to work at the scientific Nerv department, you chose the construction field."

"That job killed my mother," Asuka replied with a lazy shrug, "I'm not keen on repeating her mistakes. Any of them, actually," she tapped her chin with her left hand. "And building stuff from the ground up in Tokyo-Three? It does great things to self-esteem and my wallet. Which is why I'll offer you a dinner with a most charming date," she pointed her finger at Shinji, her smile making the young man quite uncomfortable. "Well?" she waggled her eyebrows.

"N-No?" Shinji managed to stammer out, making Asuka growl and huff.

"Fine! Be that way! There are thousands and thousands of men in other sides of the world where it's legal to bang a fourteen years old who'd be happy to do so! Legal age of consent at fourteen is allowed in the countries of Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Montenegro, Portugal, San Marino and Serbia! Here in Japan it's thirteen, but the Children Welfare Act chapter thirty-four prohibits all acts of fornication if the minor is induced into committing said act. So, even if I were lying about my age, as long as you're not the one doing the 'inducing' there shouldn't be a problem," her eyes held a sort of very scary glare to them, which didn't really convince Shinji of anything more than the firm desire to 'run away'.

But he wasn't the type to run away.

"You sound desperate," Fuyutsuki said, calmly taking a sip of his tea and 'claiming the grenade' for the team known as 'Team Shinji and Kozo'.

"I am desperate," Asuka retorted. "I've been stuck in the body of a fourteen years old since the day I had the brilliant idea I would become an Evangelion pilot," she snarled, her eyes narrowing down. "And then when I realized my mother honestly wished to strangle me," she took a small breath from beyond the chain fence. "You waited until he was old enough to not look like jailbait at least," Asuka said, gesturing with her head towards Shinji. "I would have loved to receive the same consideration," she sighed. "Let's not open any more wounds for today, all right?" she smiled next, a fake, but wide smile. "If you're not interested then you're not interested. We'll see how you feel in a matter of decades."

"Uhm..." Shinji mumbled, "What...what are you talking about?"

Fuyutsuki brought his right hand to cover his tired, very, very tired eyes. "Gendo..."

Asuka blinked. "Oh-Ohohoh!" she grinned like a shark. "They told you nothing didn't they? Nothing at all?"

She smiled innocently the next split second. "Maybe I'll tell you. I know where you live. I'll come pick you up at eight. Dress nicely. Buy flowers."

Then she turned her back towards him and walked away, whistling to herself.

"Uh-Ah-What?" Shinji looked at Fuyutsuki, who merely shrugged. Then, most wisely, the old man stood up and hurried away.

For just a brief second, on the man's back Shinji was quite sure he had seen a tiny red dot. He dismissed that as a mere hallucination brought forth by stress, the morning hour, the lack of sleep and wine and the strange persistent teenager-not-teenager.

His bodyguard most aptly said nothing.

Shinji recovered the shogi board and went about his way.

He'd see his father this afternoon, and by extension the head of the scientific department, Doctor Ritsuko. Perhaps one of the two would be willing to give him answers...perhaps Doctor Ritsuko.

No, most definitely Doctor Ritsuko.

He doubted his father would even be present to begin with.

You forgot modest! :D
"Well?" she waggled her eyebrows.

"N-No?" Shinji managed to stammer out, making Asuka growl and huff.
Oh, Shinji... This is the Great Asuka Langley Soryu. Do you think she was really going to take 'No' for an answer?
Asuka blinked. "Oh-Ohohoh!" she grinned like a shark. "They told you nothing didn't they? Nothing at all?"

I like this Asuka! She's fun!
Piloting EVAs freezes aging?
In Rebuild 3.0, Asuka looks exactly as she did in 2.0 and does not appear to have aged at all during the 14 timeskip between 2.0 and 3.0. When Shinji asked why that was, all Asuka would say was 'this is the curse of Eva.' She did not expand on what that meant.

Fun chapter. I liked the early juxtaposition of Kozo's morning with Shinji's. I'm a little surprised those two were speaking as freely as they were in public. The changes to Asuka's timeline are intriguing and her antics are hilarious. e: also I just got the chapter title, well played :)

One of the most flaunted theory
theories; also, flaunted is kind of awkward here ('vaunted' might work better)
normally you call one of these a 'hard hat' or just a helmet
She wore thick glovers
unless Asuka is taking after that guy from Silence of the Lambs, you meant 'gloves' here :V
equally thick protective vestments
this term is used more or less exclusively for the ritual garments worn by priests - you probably want 'garments' or simply 'clothes'
I went there, and also at Munich

'the scientific department of Nerv' or "Nerv's scientific department"
a fourteen years old
a fourteen year old (this is a nasty corner of English, "fourteen years old" is correct in other contexts. Basically you don't pluralize year when you use the whole phrase in place of a noun. 'X is a fourteen year old' and 'X is fourteen years old' are both correct, but 'X is a fourteen years old' and 'X is fourteen year old' are both wrong. Except the very last one can be correct colloquially in the parts of Britain where they say something is ten foot long instead of ten feet long)
in other sides of the world
"on the other side of the world" or "in other parts of the world"

So the Angels held off attacking until their latest offensive companion died?

I wonder... hypothetically could they cripple an Angel and manufacture a similar scenerio?

It took 15 years for humanity to create biomechs to fight them, I imagine another decade could further improve things.

Wow, she sounds pretty desperate. I kinda feel sorry for her...

Right so I got bored and decided to dip the chapter title into google translate.

...Well then.

Google translate seems to struggle more with Latin than with its descendants, at least when English is the target language. The title is an idiom that means, roughly, "misery loves company".
