Holdouts - (Flying Circus, Post-Apoc Town Quest)

It's the pulsejets, isn't it?
THIS IS A LIMITED RUN QUEST. We will play 20 years, or 80 turns.
. And we saw how that turned out for ADCQ and Whispers, didn't we? :V

[X] You're a travelling caravan of Skyborn airships. Obviously, you can't grow anything yourself, and you need to constantly keep moving. Harder than ever, now. (HARD MODE)

Oh no, in Flying Circus The Deep Ones are strange and unknowable but they care about you, love you and gaurd your soul in the great city beneath the waves when you die.
Also they ship it and think humans are cute together.

Turn 0 - Where, Who, How
Ist es das? Ist das Ding an? Testen, testen ... Birgit, was bedeutet dieses Licht?

Oh, verdammt... Alles klar, Ich werde es wieder versuchen.

Right, is it working now?

Alright. Good. So, um... I guess this is our logs. It's... fuck. What day is it?

Okay, it's the twenty-first of Heiligmonat, 1599. I'm standing here in, um, what's left, I guess. I'm recording these logs because... well, because there's a bunch of blank cylinders in our fucking useless survival gear, for some reason! Not enough food or water, not enough anything, but...

Fuck, why... why am I still here?

... I'm recording because I hope somebody finds these. Because I don't think we're going to last much longer. I just hope that when the gas clears, when somebody else comes, they know what happened here. They know so nobody ever does something like this again.

250 people. That's it. That's all that's left.

There's... there's not a lot of us. I had them take count again, a few hours ago, and came up two shorter than last time. That at least make its a round number. Supplies are running low. Food, water... somebody's going to have to go out there soon. Brave the gas.

Oh goddesses, the gas.

[ ] It's like the sulfuric gases they used in the war, but... worse. A clinging green cloud that pools and lingers and burns, through your mouth and nose and eyes, through masks and coats if you linger too long. The only mercy is that it's heavy, it settled in the streets.
[ ] It's wispy, nearly colourless, light. The wind whips it away, for a time, but there's always more. We're using the fans of an old factory to keep it out. If you can smell it, I'm... I'm told it smells like flowers. That it's lovely. But if you do, it's too late. You just drop after two hours. Just like you're falling asleep. The... the body's haven't rotted. They all just look like they're sleeping.
[ ] It was a fungus or something, spores. The whole place is overgrown now, like a jungle sprouted out there. We can burn it back, its why we're still alive, but It'll grow anywhere, we've had to burn it out of our shelter more than once. If it gets in your lungs... it...
[ ] It's a dark fog, black, cloying. We don't know what it does, or how it works. Masks aren't enough, we don't know how it works. Something in it... takes you. You're just gone. Vanished. The streets are empty, now. Lifeless. The mercy is, it seems thick, can't get in small gaps. You can seal a building well enough, if you're fast enough. Most people weren't.
Sorry, I lost my train of thought. It's... hard not to dwell on it. It's still out there. Still hasn't settled. Don't know if it ever will.

I have to assume everyone else in the city is dead. There might be other pockets of survivors in the city. Probably is. But I don't know how we'd get to them, or them to us. As for the outside world... I saw that machine go overhead, heading out there. There's no way.

This might be it. This... might be everyone.

---

Twenty third of Heiligmonat, 1599. I think we've taken stock of everything, and... look, its bad, but we might make it. We might.

So, yeah. The good stuff. We have the basic survival equipment, the stuff we managed to get from Civil Defense. We got about three months of food if we stretch it out, two water filtration units that can use rainwater or whatever else, that's just enough for the population. We have some furniture we could burn to boil water and stuff, and some scrap metal and stuff, I think we're using it to hold up one of the shelves right now. Couple of firearms we managed to collect on the way in, every filter we could carry for the gas masks, and... a lot of people brought money. Seriously, everyone's pockets are full of billion-mark notes. Completely fucking worthless right now, but maybe if the government comes back it might be helpful...

Oh, and get this, we have about a dozen of these huge gold coins we took off somebody. Think they looted them from a museum. They're old trade coins or something?

A fucking fortune, if we could trade 'em in for marks.

Oh yeah, filters. We need those if we wanna go outside, but they get gummed up so quickly. They're precious. Worth their weight in...

Food, I guess.

Choose 2.
[ ] The mood is actually not the worst. I think people are just glad to be alive. Or maybe it hasn't really hit them yet.
[ ] We found a whole crate of weapons in the supply cache. Enough to put together a real militia, train and stuff. Might need it when we go back out there.
[ ] We found an extra water filtration system buried under everything, so we have plenty to drink. Water to waste, really.
[ ] There's an old airplane engine that's been converted to a petrol generator, and a few cans of gas. Enough to power... something. The lights, if we need 'em.
[ ] Some old military rations. Enough to get us through another few months, if you can stomach them. It's like eating wood.
[ ] A fair amount of skilled labour. This was an upscale neighbourhood once. Property values probably taken a bit of a hit, though.
[ ] A young and healthy population. Not a lot of old folks and... not a lot of kids. Goddesses, I... I can't...
[ ] Write In (Subject to Veto)

... so yeah, that's us.

Of course, there's problems too.

Choose one. I'll use the most popular that isn't contradicted by a choice above.
[ ] Everyone is fucking terrified. We're barely keeping it under control here, it'll be hard organizing people to get anything done.
[ ] One of the water filtration units is already on the way out. I suspect it won't last long at all.
[ ] Some of the rations have gone bad. Like, you'll puke up more calories than you take in bad. Hopefully not too much.
[ ] There's some folks in here that... ain't exactly popular with everyone. It's the end of the goddamn world, and people are having fistfights in the halls. Might get worse than that.
[ ] A really young population. The shelter was near a school, and we couldn't just leave them, but now there's... all these kids we gotta take care of. They keep asking for their parents...
[ ] Write In (Subject to Veto)
... Well, when I put it like that... yeah, we might actually be fucked.

---

Okay, um... I think it's the 28th of Heiligmonat, 1599. Almost to new years. Just a few more days to go.

Not that it matters, here in the shelter, but the weather is nice. It'll be a lovely new years. Picturesque. Just what you'd expect from...

[ ] ... Hellebucht, just rain, all the time. You'd think it'd clear the gas, but we're not that lucky. I almost want the summer heat back. (A seaside city in the Caproni Archipelago. Once of the Macchi Republic, was occupied by the Gotha Empire. Tropical environment. 3 turn growing season, higher water consumption for plants and people. More likely to find money while scavenging.)
[ ] ... Klippenhafen, it's chilly and slimy and gross. We had hailstones the other day, had to just listen to it bounce off the shelter. Some of the kids thought the bombers had come back. (A former Sopwith holding on the Daimler Coast. Climate similar to northern England. Higher odds of industrial parts and raw materials, not much fertile land even before the cities.)
[ ] ... Falkenruhe, it's a sharp sort of cold. I don't know if we could leave the shelter right now if we wanted to, what with all the snow. We're trying to figure out what we can burn for heat. (A Gotha city at the edge of the Albatros Valley, with a climate similar to the northern Alps. Middle ground, 2 turn growing season. Abundance of military technology, but also greater threat from other humans.)
[ ] KieferStadt, it's completely fucking frozen, as usual. To think, we survived the gas, and we might die to fucking frostbite. (A Fokker colony in the Sikorsky Peninsula, with a climate similar to the northern Scandinavian regions. Short growing season, bitter winters. Burning fuel for heat is mandatory for survival half the year. It'll be possible to get petrol refining back in order, though.)
But... yeah, gas is still out there. We know we're going to have to open the door and go looking out there soon. We can't stay.

I figure, we put it off until just after new years. At the very least, I want to make it to 1500. See the new century come in.

Like... 1599 really sucked. Like, as a year. Fuck 1599.

So, yeah, I guess that'll be my next recording. Oh, um... if I don't make it, I should probably, like, tell you who I am. You, anonymous future listener who finds our fucking corpses. So, um, over there is Birgit, she's sorta... she's keeping this whole fucking thing together, I swear, most competent person left on this fucking continent. Say hi, Birgit.

Hi, future people!

And... me. I guess. I'm...

Leaders give bonuses to the whole colony, and can change and grow over time. More leaders mean more bonuses, but they eat into the action economy due to disagreements. Your first leader has a stronger-than-average trait.
[ ] ... Hauptmann Elsbeth Weber, I guess. Captain. Heh. Kinda meaningless now. (The Captain: Gives a bonus to any kind of roll involving organizing, training, or commanding soldiers.)
[ ] ... Elsbeth Weber. Consider this my last album, I guess. (The Singer: Gives a bonus to organizing any kind of morale-raising activity.)
[ ] ... Elsbeth Weber, and... if my bosses at the Transportation Ministry find this, consider it my fucking resignation. (The Bureaucrat: Any sort of resource use or economic reform will go more smoothly due to a bonus.)
[ ] ... Elsbeth Weber, chief of police. Or... was. Now I'm just judge, jury, and... fuck. (The Law: Gives a +2 Authority, which means you can take more extra actions, if you're willing to use force.)
[ ] ... Dr. Elsbeth Weber. Anyway, apparently somebody's stitches just popped, so I'm gonna pop some isophan and get back to work. (The Doctor: Lowered rate of mortality and injury.)
[ ] ... Dr. Elsbeth Weber. No, not that kind of doctor, I have a PhD. In... classics, sure, but I took some engineering courses! (The Scholar: Research is a bit easier. Do keep in mind the nature of the quest, though.)
[ ] ... Elsbeth Weber. I'm... the one who stepped up, I guess. (The Nobody: Coming from the people, they have faith in her, giving +1 Faith, aka +1 Action, per turn.)
[ ] ... Elsbeth Weber... (Write In a profession or reason for her to be in charge, and I'll make a relevant move.)
To clarify, action economy is not terribly strict in this game most of the time. You only spend actions to *change* things, you don't need to spend them for upkeep. I imagine for many turns you won't use all your actions.

Thinking something like...

Take the dense ground level gas, middle ground city, weapons to fight others, Maybe a good population, then low morale and 'from the masses'. Or swap for young population and good morale

I like the idea we tailor to make as much of a mood piece as possible with all the options together on that front.

Oh, and a question. Will tropical climate+fungus make the effects more severe?

The floor is lava, so as long as we stick to the upper floors and roofs we should be fine-ish, and don't need to worry about the gas coming in through the water system.

Granted, this gas is probably the worst when it comes to planes, because we can't use any broad streets or rivers/canals for runways

Oh man. Does subarctic climate + fungus = semi-safe for half the year but THE FUNGUS IS GOD for the other half, or the fungus is adapted to do normal fungus things at more or less normal fungus rates at subzero temperatures?
I really like that, so yeah, if you go fungus + cold you get 2 safer turns and 2 hell turns per year.

I like the Fungus idea because in a way it can be more insidious then the others, but you also have more option, And as noted it is the Nausicae/Gibhli version.
Water and Food are I think the most important ones with that setup, and we can work out stuff with the others, Weapon and fuel are not as needed right now and are long term boni and not short term needs.
I like the young population because it gives us Drama, and considering how long the game goes, and what we are doing we will get a real feel good reward from seeing them grow up.
Tropical because you normally don't do that, and I like the singer because moral is important and its interesting for how we will clash with others then.

Tropical might like the Cold+Fungus idea also open up some interesting side effect from that like the fungus growing outside the city, which would also work a bit like our security blanket from the goths for example.

I sorta want to try the cold/fungus combo. So here's the going plan, just with cold time of year instead.

Ok. So obviously a bit late but I like the idea of us just taking a rag tag group where we have this weird mix of capable people stepping up and everyone running on 'I haven't let the tragedy set in yet so let's keep going'.

TURN ONE - PRELUDE

Frohes neues Jahr! We made it! It's the year 1600!

We're trying to make a big celebration out of it, as big as we can, for the kids. We... we had a proper assembly a few days ago and tried to explain as best we could what was going on. Tried to be honest. It's... it was the hardest thing I've ever done.

So uh, I realize I haven't detailed this yet, so... we're currently in this old factory that had the floor cleared out, it was being used as a storage space by Civil Defense. They were supposed to distribute supplies to the shelters, but the shelters weren't done. Everyone here is everyone who got the bright idea to run here instead of staying in their homes or huddling in a concrete box with a leaky door. I've taken over what I assume was the office of the guy who ran the place before it got repurposed, and good news, he had a liquor cabinet. I've counted it out, twenty bottles of untouched and incredible booze... and I've commandeered one with Brigit. We're...

We're fucking drunk!

Heh, yeah, we're kinda fucked up. I think we earned it. Didn't we!?!

Yeah, Birgit pointed out that even though we have enough paper to keep records, we might have to burn it at some point for heat or to keep out the spores, so a backup in audio might not be a bad idea. So, yeah, I'll do periodic recordings of our basic records and events and stuff, might actually be useful going forward, and not just for... whoa. This stuff is a bit strong, isn't it?

Right, yeah, um, lemme just gather up my papers here. Okay...

First thing, population report. We've taken... I guess a census? Yeah, and we've broken down the population into four groups. We've got people fit to do manual labour, we're got skilled workers with specialties, we've got the kids who can't really do much, and we've got dependents. That's anyone disabled such that they can't really do a lot of labour.

Population Report
Total Population - 250
Labour - 100
Skilled - 10
Kids - 120
Dependents - 20
Current Mood: Despairing but Determined

Yeah, okay. For skilled labour, we mostly have the teachers from the nearby public school. One of them had the brilliant idea to come here and bring the kids, he's... he might be my hero. Saved so many lives... I... just wish we could... sorry, I always get a little sad when I'm drunk.

... Fuck you, the world's ended, I can cry if I want to.

Okay, yeah, we got teachers, we got the doctor, we got the two professors from the university up the road, we've got a pilot, of all things, and you got me and Birgit.

Skilled Breakdown: 4 Teachers, 2 Scientists, 1 Doctor, 1 Pilot, 1 Leader, 1 Bureaucrat.

So... what does it all mean? Well, population isn't gonna just stay the same. We already got a few ladies in here with kids on the way, right? And as the kids get older, they'll be able to help out more, especially if the teachers are teaching them. But... I dunno if we can really afford more mouths to feed, you know?

I'm not really worried about getting too old, though. Like a few of the folks here aren't exactly spry, but if they manage to die of old age that's a victory. I'm more worried about the sickness from the spores. It's already killed a few of us.

Casualties are removed randomly. Kids and Dependents are more likely to die than Labourers and Skilled.

Right, yeah, let's talk about labour. Unfortunate fact is, most of us our just sitting around with nothing to do but wait. There's sort of an informal group of... we're calling them firefighters, it's ironic. They're the folks who go around and burn out the spores. Right now they just use newspaper and matches, we'll need to do better. And we've picked a few of the more reliable people to safeguard the guns, and we figure, you know, if something goes wrong...

Job Report
15 Water Purifiers (Input 1 Purifier, 5 Labourers. Output 150 Water.)
4 Teachers (Input 1 Teacher, Output +2% Skilled Labour growth)
1 Doctor (Input 1 Doctor, Output: Can treat 5 Causalities per Turn. 25% chance they'll be saved, 25% chance they'll become Dependents)
20 Spore Fighters (Input 1 Labourer, 5 Petrol or 10 Fuel. Output: Reduces Infestation by 1% per Turn)(Currently set to prioritize FUEL)
2 Researchers (Input 1 Scientist, Output +1 to Research Rolls)
1 Bureaucrat (Input 1 Bureaucrat. Output: Specialized)
1 Leader
12 Militia (Input 1 Labourer, 1 Bureaucrat. Output: As long as you have 1 Militia per 25 people, you get 1 Authority. If you have twice that, 2 Authority. They can also fight.)
Unemployed Labour: 53
Unemployed Skilled: 1

That's... that's all we've got right now regarding working.

Right, the spores.

So... this building isn't sealed, not really. Spores will get in and latch onto anywhere. They'll grow in cracks in the fucking concrete. So we're always sweeping the place to try and get it more sealed in as best we can, and burning away the spores. We'll try to keep a rough estimation of how much our colony is infested. Right now... we stay away from the areas around the smokestacks, from the windows, the reception area, and a few of the corners.

Infestation
15%
Every percent of Infestation increases the quarterly casualties by 1/10th.
Naturally, Infestation grows 2d10% per Turn. Expanding to new areas will increase Infestation as well, as people are exposed.
Right, so, resources. Let's take a look at what we're starting with.

Resource Stores
Food: 3000 (Produced: 0, Used: 1000)
Water: 200 (Produced: 450, Used 250)
Fuel: 800 (Produced: 0, Used 200)
Weapons: 12 (Produced: 0, Used 0)
Munitions: 100 (Produced: 0, Used 0)
Raw Resources: 100 (Produced 0, Used 0)
Petrol: 25 (Produced 0, Used 0)
Filters: 100 (Produced 0)
Thaler: 12
Space
Current Territory: 100
Used: 25 for Housing
Free: 75
Yeah... the food situation is dire, I dunno how else to put it. We can't eat the fungus, the professors say it's all completely poisonous. We need to grow something. There's these big windows on the roof so light can come in, so I figure maybe we might be able to grow some stuff, if we can get clean soil I guess.

So... the question is, what are we going to do to get through the next few months?

ACTIONS
You have 4 Faith per Turn. Faith is your political power to do things that people will do because of their faith in you and the future: they're your "Free Actions".
You also have 1 Authority. Authority is actions taken through the use of violent force. This will require, effectively, state violence, and will never be pretty, but somethings hard choices must be made. Always use with caution.
Finally, your 1 Bureaucrat can be directed to try and reduce usage of one resource through management. This will be of random effectiveness.
This will be a vote by plan, and the votes will be freeform. Votes change things about the operation of your town: once its started, you don't have to keep voting to keep something working, but you do have to vote to change or stop it.

I'm... I'm gonna lay down. This booze is strong stuff. I'll figure it out in the morning.

Thank the Goddesses for Birgit. Wouldn't last a minute without her...

Oksy, so. Smokestacks.

These point to the existence of something that made a big fire. Likely something powered by coal, either a generator or furnace. Given that these things are ridicously massive, it should probably still be tgere.

More interesting is the coal though. Coal is a bulky fuel source, so it's unlikely to build a coal powered factory away from everything else.
It's likely that the factory is near some bulk transport solution (river, railway, canal).

There are pits and screw-marks where there was something before, maybe old generators, but they're gone now. Presumably taken by Gotha occupiers. Our survivors have not had time to think about it much.

You're near a canal.

Hello, dropping in here.

Priorities seem to be FOOD and FUEL, I guess we can grow both with enough soil and seed and space, getting a hold of the first two seems like a good way to direct our initial efforts. Rationing is also something that should be considered, ideally paired with something to keep people's spirits up.

[] Day "school": leverage the teachers to keep the kids busy. Teach them things if possible but mostly just focus on tiring them out and keeping them away from the spores.
[] Strike the Concrete! Begin making a hole through the concrete to the ground below. Do not attempt to breach any tunnels found.
[] The Smokestack problem: focus on sealing the stacks first. Maybe the crushed concrete slabs could help?
[] Out and about: have our egg heads start working on protective clothing for future jaunts into the death zone

thoughts anyone? Also do we need to task the beuracrat to recruit Militia?
