Ist es das? Ist das Ding an? Testen, testen ... Birgit, was bedeutet dieses Licht?
Oh, verdammt... Alles klar, Ich werde es wieder versuchen.
Right, is it working now?
Alright. Good. So, um... I guess this is our logs. It's... fuck. What day is it?
Okay, it's the twenty-first of Heiligmonat, 1599. I'm standing here in, um, what's left, I guess. I'm recording these logs because... well, because there's a bunch of blank cylinders in our
fucking useless survival gear, for some reason! Not enough food or water, not enough
anything, but...
Fuck, why...
why am I still here?
... I'm recording because I hope somebody finds these. Because I don't think we're going to last much longer. I just hope that when the gas clears, when somebody else comes, they know what happened here. They know so nobody ever does something like this again.
250 people. That's it. That's all that's left.
There's... there's not a lot of us. I had them take count again, a few hours ago, and came up two shorter than last time. That at least make its a round number. Supplies are running low. Food, water... somebody's going to have to go out there soon. Brave the gas.
Oh goddesses, the gas.
[ ] It's like the sulfuric gases they used in the war, but... worse. A clinging green cloud that pools and lingers and burns, through your mouth and nose and eyes, through masks and coats if you linger too long. The only mercy is that it's heavy, it settled in the streets.
[ ] It's wispy, nearly colourless, light. The wind whips it away, for a time, but there's always more. We're using the fans of an old factory to keep it out. If you can smell it, I'm... I'm told it smells like flowers. That it's lovely. But if you do, it's too late. You just drop after two hours. Just like you're falling asleep. The... the body's haven't rotted. They all just look like they're sleeping.
[ ] It was a fungus or something, spores. The whole place is overgrown now, like a jungle sprouted out there. We can burn it back, its why we're still alive, but It'll grow anywhere, we've had to burn it out of our shelter more than once. If it gets in your lungs... it...
[ ] It's a dark fog, black, cloying. We don't know what it does, or how it works. Masks aren't enough, we don't know how it works. Something in it... takes you. You're just gone. Vanished. The streets are empty, now. Lifeless. The mercy is, it seems thick, can't get in small gaps. You can seal a building well enough, if you're fast enough. Most people weren't.
Sorry, I lost my train of thought. It's... hard not to dwell on it. It's still out there. Still hasn't settled. Don't know if it ever will.
I have to assume everyone else in the city is dead. There might be other pockets of survivors in the city. Probably is. But I don't know how we'd get to them, or them to us. As for the outside world... I saw that machine go overhead, heading out there. There's no way.
This might be it. This... might be everyone.

Twenty third of Heiligmonat, 1599. I think we've taken stock of everything, and... look, its bad, but we might make it. We might.
So, yeah. The good stuff. We have the basic survival equipment, the stuff we managed to get from Civil Defense. We got about three months of food if we stretch it out, two water filtration units that can use rainwater or whatever else, that's just enough for the population. We have some furniture we could burn to boil water and stuff, and some scrap metal and stuff, I think we're using it to hold up one of the shelves right now. Couple of firearms we managed to collect on the way in, every filter we could carry for the gas masks, and... a lot of people brought money. Seriously, everyone's pockets are full of billion-mark notes. Completely fucking worthless right now, but maybe if the government comes back it might be helpful...
Oh, and get this, we have about a dozen of these huge gold coins we took off somebody. Think they looted them from a museum. They're old trade coins or something?
A fucking fortune, if we could trade 'em in for marks.
Oh yeah, filters. We need those if we wanna go outside, but they get gummed up so quickly. They're precious. Worth their weight in...
Food, I guess.
Choose 2.
[ ] The mood is actually not the worst. I think people are just glad to be alive. Or maybe it hasn't really hit them yet.
[ ] We found a whole crate of weapons in the supply cache. Enough to put together a real militia, train and stuff. Might need it when we go back out there.
[ ] We found an extra water filtration system buried under everything, so we have plenty to drink. Water to waste, really.
[ ] There's an old airplane engine that's been converted to a petrol generator, and a few cans of gas. Enough to power... something. The lights, if we need 'em.
[ ] Some old military rations. Enough to get us through another few months, if you can stomach them. It's like eating wood.
[ ] A fair amount of skilled labour. This was an upscale neighbourhood once. Property values probably taken a bit of a hit, though.
[ ] A young and healthy population. Not a lot of old folks and... not a lot of kids. Goddesses, I... I can't...
[ ] Write In (Subject to Veto)
... so yeah, that's us.
Of course, there's problems too.
Choose one. I'll use the most popular that isn't contradicted by a choice above.
[ ] Everyone is fucking terrified. We're barely keeping it under control here, it'll be hard organizing people to get anything done.
[ ] One of the water filtration units is already on the way out. I suspect it won't last long at all.
[ ] Some of the rations have gone bad. Like, you'll puke up more calories than you take in bad. Hopefully not too much.
[ ] There's some folks in here that... ain't exactly popular with everyone. It's the end of the goddamn world, and people are having fistfights in the halls. Might get worse than that.
[ ] A really young population. The shelter was near a school, and we couldn't just leave them, but now there's... all these kids we gotta take care of. They keep asking for their parents...
[ ] Write In (Subject to Veto)
... Well, when I put it like that... yeah, we might actually be fucked.

Okay, um... I think it's the 28th of Heiligmonat, 1599. Almost to new years. Just a few more days to go.
Not that it matters, here in the shelter, but the weather is nice. It'll be a lovely new years. Picturesque. Just what you'd expect from...
[ ] ... Hellebucht, just rain, all the time. You'd think it'd clear the gas, but we're not that lucky. I almost want the summer heat back. (A seaside city in the Caproni Archipelago. Once of the Macchi Republic, was occupied by the Gotha Empire. Tropical environment. 3 turn growing season, higher water consumption for plants and people. More likely to find money while scavenging.)
[ ] ... Klippenhafen, it's chilly and slimy and gross. We had hailstones the other day, had to just listen to it bounce off the shelter. Some of the kids thought the bombers had come back. (A former Sopwith holding on the Daimler Coast. Climate similar to northern England. Higher odds of industrial parts and raw materials, not much fertile land even before the cities.)
[ ] ... Falkenruhe, it's a sharp sort of cold. I don't know if we could leave the shelter right now if we wanted to, what with all the snow. We're trying to figure out what we can burn for heat. (A Gotha city at the edge of the Albatros Valley, with a climate similar to the northern Alps. Middle ground, 2 turn growing season. Abundance of military technology, but also greater threat from other humans.)
[ ] KieferStadt, it's completely fucking frozen, as usual. To think, we survived the gas, and we might die to fucking frostbite. (A Fokker colony in the Sikorsky Peninsula, with a climate similar to the northern Scandinavian regions. Short growing season, bitter winters. Burning fuel for heat is mandatory for survival half the year. It'll be possible to get petrol refining back in order, though.)
But... yeah, gas is still out there. We know we're going to have to open the door and go looking out there soon. We can't stay.
I figure, we put it off until just after new years. At the very least, I want to make it to 1500. See the new century come in.
Like... 1599 really sucked. Like, as a year. Fuck 1599.
So, yeah, I guess that'll be my next recording. Oh, um... if I don't make it, I should probably, like, tell you who I am. You, anonymous future listener who finds our fucking corpses. So, um, over there is Birgit, she's sorta... she's keeping this whole fucking thing together, I swear, most competent person left on this fucking continent. Say hi, Birgit.
Hi, future people!
And... me. I guess. I'm...
Leaders give bonuses to the whole colony, and can change and grow over time. More leaders mean more bonuses, but they eat into the action economy due to disagreements. Your first leader has a stronger-than-average trait.
[ ] ... Hauptmann Elsbeth Weber, I guess. Captain. Heh. Kinda meaningless now. (The Captain: Gives a bonus to any kind of roll involving organizing, training, or commanding soldiers.)
[ ] ... Elsbeth Weber. Consider this my last album, I guess. (The Singer: Gives a bonus to organizing any kind of morale-raising activity.)
[ ] ... Elsbeth Weber, and... if my bosses at the Transportation Ministry find this, consider it my fucking resignation. (The Bureaucrat: Any sort of resource use or economic reform will go more smoothly due to a bonus.)
[ ] ... Elsbeth Weber, chief of police. Or... was. Now I'm just judge, jury, and... fuck. (The Law: Gives a +2 Authority, which means you can take more extra actions, if you're willing to use force.)
[ ] ... Dr. Elsbeth Weber. Anyway, apparently somebody's stitches just popped, so I'm gonna pop some isophan and get back to work. (The Doctor: Lowered rate of mortality and injury.)
[ ] ... Dr. Elsbeth Weber. No, not that kind of doctor, I have a PhD. In... classics, sure, but I took some engineering courses! (The Scholar: Research is a bit easier. Do keep in mind the nature of the quest, though.)
[ ] ... Elsbeth Weber. I'm... the one who stepped up, I guess. (The Nobody: Coming from the people, they have faith in her, giving +1 Faith, aka +1 Action, per turn.)
[ ] ... Elsbeth Weber... (Write In a profession or reason for her to be in charge, and I'll make a relevant move.)
To clarify, action economy is not terribly strict in this game most of the time. You only spend actions to *change* things, you don't need to spend them for upkeep. I imagine for many turns you won't use all your actions.
