Hidden Orre: Underground Quest

Interesting, ended up being closer than I thought. Was the voting period long enough or do you guys think we might have gotten more replies if I'd left it open longer?

Edit: Well, you guys certainly got lucky. Six possible picks. Now I need 6 1d100 rolls. From seperate people if possible please.

This quest needs maybe twice as many posts fairly frequently before I'd say a longer vote period would help. You're still in the first steps of fleshing out the story and drumming up interest, and pokefever isn't as high as it used to be.

So, right now you're doing fine.

EDIT: @CuriousRaptor you sneaky motherfucker, how dare you pass me your bad dice when I wasn't looking

Okay thank you for the assessment. I guess most of the major pokemon fans stayed on SB, or otherwise aren't interested in the premise as it stands. Oh well, just means they aren't getting in on the ground floor.

Also, just need one more roll. And no, the nat 1 doesn't cancel out the nat 100.

Considering that the big Pokemon stories over there right now are;
Just another Vicky story by Seras,
An isekai hurt/comfort that, wonder of wonders, doesn't devolve in navel-gazing wankery as that trend so often does,
A slice-of-life that would work just as well in almost any other setting,
And a quest run by a fairly prolific and well-known QM who does good character pieces (even if (s)he struggles to finish sometimes),
I don't think it's a lack of Pokefever or Pokefans - of any variety - on SV's part so much as just generally well-written stories that would be decent without Pokemon.

Pokemon as it currently stands has something of a Disney-lite problem where it's played out and stale, all the contributors and fans who might provide worthwhile feedback are getting shot down by the lawyers, and innovation has taken back seat to "safe" money.

It's still a fantastic setting and I bet a lot of people - like me - are willing to at least check out Pokemon stories when they come up, but the shine has worn off and it's harder to ignore the issues. Unique and worth experimenting with, but not flashy enough to lure in new fans/players without having substantive backing behind the flash.

Yeah, I can see that as being the case in regards to people getting tired of the mainline pokemon stuff especially with how they seem to delight in tossing concepts out the window after a single gen in most cases, with the seeming sole exception of Mega Evolution. Shadow Pokemon especially are an aspect that most adult fans would respond well to and it really plays on the whole "friendship is true power" aspect of pokemon.

Unstable Ground
After giving it some serious thought, you'd elected to head for the meadow area. The decision was more based on the needs of potential pokemon that would be found in each biome. While being able to take a pokemon normally found in forests or wetlands back would certainly clinch the expedition's funding, until they had specialized biomes set up the best that he'd be able to do to keep them comfortable would be to either keep them in their pokeballs or to keep them inside the homestead. At that point, why even bother having left the caverns in the first place?

Also, seeing the Hoppip floating around had reminded you of the one thing that you could offer to any pokemon electing to join you. Space. Unfettered space to fly as high and fast as they wanted without having to worry about walls or a ceiling. Space to run around even if it was on sand rather than in grass without worrying about encroaching on another mon's territory.

Pulling out a pair of field glasses, you stopped near the edge of the meadow, scanning the long grass for hints of movement or other clues to the presence of pokemon. Ah! There we go! You adjusted the binoculars to focus in on the brief flash of blue you'd spotted.

45 - Rookidee

It was a small almost spherical bird with bright blue plumage on its back and wings, contrasted with an electric yellow breast. It was currently perched on top of a small pile of fruit that had likely been nabbed from the forested area. It was eating cautiously while keeping an eye on its surroundings.

100 - Scyther

And it was no wonder it was so cautious! You nearly blinked and missed it, but you spotted a two-legged figure in varying shades of green pause in a gap between tufts of grass. There was a glimmer of light from the sharp scythes that it had for limbs, and its Saurian head turned one way then another as it gauged its surroundings.

100 - Scyther

A Scyther. And, as it turned around; you noted that it wasn't as tall as the species average using the height of the grass in proportion to the Rookidee earlier to help estimate the height. The scythes were shiny not only from sharpness but also from lack of use. And there was a distinct lack of scarring on the carapace. A juvenile just turned out from whatever swarm this cavern can support? Or perhaps an arrival from another cavern? As it turned in place, listening intently, you spotted one other thing. Tucked most of the way under the "collar" of the mon's exoskeleton was a shard of jet black stone that glinted in the light. You recognized it after a moment of study. Black Augerite. You're not sure why the Scyther has it, but apparently it's important enough to place it on one of its vulnerable points. Hard to tell if it's a male or female at this distance.

22 - Sunkern

You almost overlooked the next one, a splash of bright yellow and deep black that was perching on a broad leaf of a bush near the edge of the meadow. A Sunkern, while not an overly powerful pokemon they were certainly one that wasn't expected to be seen in Orre, they needed fertile soil to survive and much more moisture than Orre was known for... As well as one of the pokemon that evolved upon exposure to a Sun Stone.

Wait, what was that?!

1 - Just missed 'em.

You swear you saw a flash of... something but it was gone faster than you could really track. The only mark of its passage was the disturbed grass being left in its wave.

38 - Doduo

Next to call your attention was a pair of heads with fuzzy-looking feathers, long beaks with hooked tips alternating as they drank and kept an eye on the area around them. Two long black necks that ran down to disappear into the brown feathers of a rotund little body that moved around on long yellow legs. Doduo, a pokemon known for being useful as a riding pokemon once it fully evolved to Dodrio, and one of only a small subset of unique pokemon that have multiple heads on the same body without being a shared colony like Binnacle or Wuggtrio. Girafarig, the Deino line upon evolution, Weezing and Eggxecutor all shared in that somewhat exclusive club.

32 - Oddish

The last find that you made you very nearly skipped over, mistaking it for a normal weed before tracking back as the leaves trembled slightly. Yes, there at the ground level, there was a small blue body peeking out slightly. An Oddish. Yet another pokemon who could (eventually) evolve with the help of a Sun Stone, the lack of putrid scent pointed towards Vileplume not being a common form in this biome at least.

At this point you don't think you want to push your luck trying to pinpoint any other pokemon. You can see about approaching one of them, but in that timeframe the others are likely to have moved or otherwise would be impossible to pick up the track of.

So, who do you choose?

[ ]Rookidee
[ ]Scyther (with Black Augerite?)
[ ]Sunkern

There will be a 2 Hour Moratorium for discussion.

Ah crud. Forgot. 2 hour moratorium was supposed to be in effect.

@sevgre please uncheck the box. Sorry about that.

This is our 100 roll, we cannot pass it up. Not only does he have an item, but he is very clearly the most likely to join us willingly. A young lone warrior looking for a place and a chance to prove himself. Scyther would also give us the offense necessary to feel more secure about battles, and he'd be very useful for manual labor such as breaking rock and clearing lumber.

Honestly a little disappointed there will likely be another roll to see if we actually recruit even after I managed a crit...

Not familiar with this Pokemon or whichever generation it comes from, so I can't say too much about it. Seems like a bird-type though, so the 'wide open skies of the surface' might appeal to it more than some others.

[ ]Scyther (with Black Augerite?)
Probably the most combat-useful Pokemon on this list, though given battles aren't the focus of this quest that matters less than usual with Pokemon. Could still be useful though, and finding out what's going on with the Black Augerite would be interesting.

[ ]Sunkern
Like the update said, not the most powerful Pokemon but definitely proof of our claims. Not sure what role it could play in the caverns that wouldn't already be filled by Hoppip.

[ ]Doduo
Probably wouldn't mind being in tunnels as much as a flight-capable bird, but I'm not sure how useful it would be in mining. Above ground it could be useful transport, bit we currently already have that.

[ ]Oddish
I believe this Pokemon already had some discussion earlier?

Most definately Scyther. That the MC not recognizing why it is holding Black Augurite makes me believe that Kleavor are, if not extinct, then at least very rare.

It would also give us a strong Rock type somewhere down the line, very useful for cave exploration.

Even Scyther can already learn Brick Break for cave traversal and False Swipe for captures.

The only pokemon really in competion for me is Rookidee for the transport utility.

Scyther is a Bug Type with Swarm too, so that opens up special options with hive mind bug types going forward.
Also my labor argument. We'll need to cut wood to make mine supports.

A nat 100 is supposed to be the best option possible in any situation mind.

Evolves into a bug steel or bug rock type.
