Harry Potter…Again…From the Beginning…on HBO

Oh if you can believe it, it's worse than just that.

A message from her to her fans on her 18th birthday, followed immediately by an interview with her years later where she relays how when she came out of her 18th biirthday party paparazzi were laying down on the pavement taking pictures up her skirt.

The rules of this website dictate that I not say what i want done to people like that.

Okay, but imagine J. K. Rowling backporting stuff from the end of the series to the start to make it all tonally consistent.

In the sense that Snape's a creepy in EP notionally on the protagonist's side, that Dumbledore isn't completely blind to Quirrel or that the trio are ultimately neoliberal ghouls at heart who will grow up to perpetuate the system?

More seriously, Dumbledore being at the Eyrie for ICW instead of London for Ministry stuff is a between excuse for his absence from the castle in the closing act; but that's about it

There are lots of little tweaks and changes you could make to help the story flow better from part to part or set up future plot points. (Its not hard to improve hp, JKR made a lot of mistakes mostly caused by not planning out the series ahead of time) but it's a very slippery slope from slight adjustments to better set up future plot points to just writing fan fiction that assumes the audience is intimately familiar with the original story.

HBO Head Rejects Question About J.K. Rowling’s Transphobia: ‘That’s a Very Online Conversation’

Casey Bloys refused to answer a question about JK Rowling's transphobia while discussing the upcoming "Harry Potter" TV show.

During Warner Bros. Discovery's big unveiling of the rebooted Max streamer, the big announcement the company saved for last was the official order of a "Harry Potter" TV show. And as with every new project in the franchise, the announcement immediately drew scrutiny due to franchise creator J.K. Rowling's extensive history of transphobia.

During a Q&A session held on the Warner Bros. Burbank studio immediately after the conference, Max and HBO Content Head Casey Bloys declined to answer a question from a reporter regarding Rowling's controversial reputation and how it might affect the show.

"No, I don't think this is the forum," Bloys said during the Q&A. "That's a very online conversation, very nuanced and complicated and not something we're going to get into."

To the surprise of no one since Harry Potter is the normiest of normie franchises and with the success of Hogwarys Legacy, HBO is going strait ahead. Those child actors are gonna turn 18 at one point, yeah? Yeah, they are. Hooo boy...

Oh, it's a 10-year plan. Like the DCEU.

Harry Potter TV Series Targeted for 2026 Premiere on Max, J.K. Rowling Recently Met With Studio Execs to Discuss Show

Harry Potter is set to return -- to the small screen -- in 2026 on Warner Bros. Discovery's Max.
The first installment of the Harry Potter TV series is targeted to hit the Max streaming service in 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said on the company's Q4 earnings call Friday. The series is expected to span seven seasons, adapting each book in J.K. Rowling's best-selling fantasy book series.

Zaslav said he was in London a few weeks ago with HBO and Max content boss Casey Bloys and Channing Dungey, chairperson of Warner Bros. Television, to meet with author J.K. Rowling about the show.

... WBD gave the series a green light last year, and said the plan is to develop seasons based on all of the books, spreading out over 10 years.

As someone who likes to visit lots of different comic shops and malls and such I have definitely noticed a trend among Harry Potter merchandise. They seem to be moving away from directly referencing the movies and instead are selling lots of pseudo anime cartoon stuff. This is probably for several reasons, one to save money on licensing and using the likenesses of actors, two anime is super popular in nerd circles but I also think it might be a strategic play to disconnect former HP actors who might have become critical of Hp or JKR in the years since the movies.

Considering how young their going to have to be to audition for the roles let alone film the first season; I do feel a great swell of pity for the child actors.

If not for the bank she's going to make regardless, I would find amusement in the fact that WBD's habit of flip flopping on how much executive control is exercised might mean She is going to end up with far less control than she thinks.

Intellectually it occurs that timescales involved in shooting streaming series mean that unless they are filming series 1-3 in one go; they'll have to adapt things far more than the films ever did to avoid the kids outgrowing the timeframes

Mostly though, I want this godforsaken IP to fall into unprofitablity and obscurity and never give that woman another penny.

Given its been taking as much as two or three years for a CGI heavy TV series to get made these days this is going to be an utter train wreck. That's even setting aside the absolute nightmare the discourse is going to be about whoever is unlucky enough to playing the main characters. (Plus the original three were frankly pretty amazing all things considered.)

I like Harry Potter but I know full well the last thing the franchise needs after the Cursed Child, No Fantastic Beasts and Nowhere to Find Them, and Hogwarts Legacy is to literally circle back on itself and remake the original series not much than a decade after the original films.

Depressingly though I don't think its going to be poor ratings that will tank this series - its going to be one or more of the child stars not being able to handle the pressure and breaking in a bad way.

Between this and the wizard game, it seems WB is sourcing their ideas for the franchise from things fans thought would be cool when they were 10.

Harry Potter Series at HBO Finds Its Showrunner and Director

'Succession' alums Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod will lead the creative team for the show.
The series has named Francesca Gardiner as its writer and showrunner and tapped Mark Mylod to direct multiple episodes. Both are Emmy winners for HBO's Succession — Gardiner as part of the show's producing team and Mylod as both director and producer.

Gardiner's credits as a writer and producer also include His Dark Materials at HBO, Killing Eve at BBC America and The Rook at Starz. Mylod has directed episodes of Game of Thrones and the upcoming second season of The Last of Us for HBO, as well as feature film The Menu and Showtime's Shameless and The Affair, among others.

... [C]asting is believed to be the next order of business. The first installment of the series is expected to premiere in 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said on an earnings call earlier this year.

Interesting ; that one was a very good adaptation.

The only people I feel sorry for are the child actors who don't really have a say in it.

I suppose we could always hope HBO make as much of a mess of this as Sky did with thr Ankh-Morpork Watch

Have you considered that maybe having these kids' adolescent (and maybe pre-adolescent) years completely screwed over is a bigger consideration?

HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series Opens Casting Call for Harry, Ron and Hermione: ‘We Are Committed to Inclusive, Diverse Casting’

HBO has opened a casting call for the stars of its upcoming "Harry Potter" TV series to play Harry, Ron and Hermione.
HBO has opened a casting call for the three stars of its upcoming "Harry Potter" TV series. Fans spotted the announcement circulating online Monday, and HBO confirmed its authenticity to Variety.

The casting call is looking for children who will be between the ages of 9-11 in April 2025 and who are residents of the U.K. and Ireland. The notice also says that casting will be inclusive to all races, ethnicities and gender identities.

...

The submission deadline is Oct. 31, and the casting call says the show will film in the U.K. during 2025-2026. There is no release date yet for the HBO series.

So much for hoping that HBO would slow walk things as Rowling digs herself deep.

Those poor children. Bad enough they get their adolescence destroyed for the sake of content, but having this burning poo receptacle hanging over them?

God help them.

Edit:
*reads the note on how open the casting is*

Oh god in heaven, the suits are going to do something stupid (in the screwing over a child actor via harassment sense, not a 'diversity hire' sense) in the casting to distance themselves from Rowling/launder things aren't they?

I understand that the world of child acting is super competitive and you take what you can get but man... throwing your nine to eleven year old into this feels almost inherently abusive. Like how do you sit your kid down and tell them that there will be years of harassment and abuse from basically every corner of the internet because of their role.

I see this going especially badly given how some people are acting in Britain towards any they think don't look British enough right now.

You know, if only there was some kind of format that could more easily get away with using older actors. As if... instead of filming actual, live reality, the were filming some kind of... artificial... thing. Like, maybe if you took like... a comic perhaps, and brought it to life, like say... oh... if only I could find the word on the tip of my tongue...
