Dog Names: Reason and Incentive

I'll always regret that Bandit and Snoots wasn't chosen. Still, the people have spoken

Action Magic Center

Made of Iron. Maybe
You set down a path to the learning center, with Reason and Incentive right behind you. As you walk, some people notice them.

"Nice dogs. Just make sure they don't bite anyone"

"Those dogs were any bigger that pretty sure that they could swallow someone"

"I had a dog just like that. You've got good taste"

Eventually, you get to the learning center. The sun is going down and part of you wonders if Joseph is even there. He's been there since this morning and even his boss would need to let him go some time. If only so he could sleep and then go back to work.

Your question is answered when you see Joseph walking out of the center.

"That narcissistic, incompetent, savage, materialistic..." Joseph says as he walks out of the building. Even though he was nearly frozen to death this morning, he looks as physically fine as he always does. However, he looks angry, slouching low with his fist balled.

"Hey Joe!" You call out.

Joseph looks up smiling when he sees you. "Def! It's good to see a friendly face" he says as he shakes your hand. Before he can say anything else, he looks down, seeing your dogs. His eyes light up almost instantly. "Aw... I didn't know you had pets. Well, except for Billy" He adds.

"Yeah... sometimes, I still miss him..." You say reminiscing."Anyway, These are my dogs, Reason and Incentive" You say with a small amount of pride.

"Really?" He says incredulously. He valiantly tries to keep from laughing, managing to keep his reaction to his eyebrow twitching.

"What? They're good names!" You defend, crossing your arms. They are good names! They are a good reason and incentive for bastards to stay away from my home!

"Well, I really shouldn't judge" He says, chuckling. "Anyway, I'm heading to get some dinner on the way home. You want to come?"

"Sorry, I'm here to learn a little about magic" You say.

Joseph nods. "Fair enough. Well, I guess I'll see you tomorrow." He turns to leave but you grab his shoulder.

"Wait" You say. "After the last few days, I've been meaning to ask you something. I just thought about it a little while ago"

"Alright" He says as he turns back towards you. "What do you need?"

"Well... remember back when we were kids, and you fell down the stairs?" You ask.

"Twice" He amends, rubbing the back of his head.

"Or when you got with a fight with William with the sticks?"

"Hey, we found a pair of sticks that looked like swords. Of course we were gonna have a sword fight!" He says shrugging.

"And he nearly bashed your head in" You say. "And what about when you fell off that bridge into a lake"

"What is this about?" He asks.

"Each time, you were fine each timer" You say. "You fell out of the statue? You get a scrape on your knee. You get your head knocked in? You come back a few days later with a bandage on your head. You fall down a flight of stairs?! You don't even have a scratch! And then, when you get beat up by an adventurer, you're fine two days later. Even now, you look fine after you almost froze to death this morning."

"Just what are you made out of?" You ask.

Joseph just looks at you for a moment. He opens his mouth, then closes it. He rubs his chin for several seconds before answering.

"I... I never really thought about it" He says. "I mean, I've heard of some people getting tougher than normal. Not that many, but a few."

"Really? That's all there is to it?" You ask, raising an eyebrow.

"Well, yes." He says. "I heard some people become soldiers or part of an adventuring party. Maybe the b-boss of some mercenary band or major p-players in criminal gangs. Things like that"

"So, you aren't secretly a vampire or a mage using healing magic?" You ask.

"I can see myself in a mirror, I don't start dying around garlic, and I don't melt in the sun like a block of ice, so I don't think I'm a vampire" Joseph says, chuckling. "And Cidium said that I can't use magic. He-he was saying something about broken lines, p-passive enhancement, or something like that." He scratches the back of his neck.

"I'll admit, I wasn't really paying attention... I was focused on going home..." He says, with a small amount of embarrassment.

[] "Really? That's it? No secrets to immorality? No dark rituals involving other worlds?"
[] "Huh... I guess I thought there was a bit more to it"
[] "Maybe it was something about that passive enhancement that Cidium was talking about"
[] "Well, I'll see you then"
[] "Sorry to ask you to wait again, but what was that about? When you were first leaving?"

My personal guess is actually half-troll or quarter-troll regeneration abilities, or some other non-human ancestor.

[X] That "passive enhancement" might not be vampirism, but it definitely sounds interesting. Maybe you should talk to Cidium again, then tell me about it; you never know when a little special something turns out to be a big special something.

Edit: Actually, does this work? I am unsure if the lack of "[] Write in" on the list means that MData just isn't looking for a write-in or if a write-in is not allowed. Despite how many quests I've read, I still find this point unclear.

Edit 2: I like my write-in, but I see that it can wait till the game's tomorrow; we might need to know about management decisions now.

What happened was that it was late at night and work had taken a lot out of me. I am accepting write ins.

Seems fair that we should express concern for him in return.

and then Joseph was Shirou. *shakes head* Or he's a Joestar.

Exposition
"Oh nothing." Joseph says.

"Joseph..." You say, folding your arms. "We both know it's something. If you need to talk, I'm here"

Joseph sighs. "Just a... disagreement I had with my boss. He's paying everyone at the center less" Joseph says. "Remember how I bet my raise on this? Well he gave me that raise. After cutting everyone's salary. Said that the Church was giving us less money so he 'has' to get more money somewhere.

Joseph sighs. "The sad part is, I don't know if it's because he's pocketing the money himself or he just hates losing that much that he'd cut everyone's pay just to get back at me" He's shaking again, but this time, it's with anger. After a few seconds, he takes a deep breath.

Being a peasant is a hard life and it isn't for everyone. You should know. You work day in and day out growing crops and you're one bad winter from starving. But it's things like this that keep a lot of people from moving into the city. Here, you were at the mercy of whoever paid you. Sometimes, they were good, understanding people.

Most are not.

And if you drove out your workers, there's probably a halfway competent, destitute foreigner who will happily do the job half as good for an eighth of the money.

"You know, I know a few shopowners. If you want, I could talk to them for you" You offer. You know Margery well enough that she'd be happy to take him aboard. If someone could pry her away from her counter herself. If he could cook, the Hammer and Ales could use a new one.

Joseph shakes his head. "T-t-thanks Def. I might just take you up on that. But for now, I want to try to figure something out on my own" He may have rejected your offer, but the smile on his face is clear as day.

"If you need anything, you know where to find me" You say, waving goodbye to Joseph. "Oh, and if you get the chance, I'd talk to Cidium if I were you. That Passive Enchantment he was talking about? It might be something good." Who knows? Maybe he's a fourth troll. You've seen his parents, but not his grandparents.

Joseph nods before turning to leave. He may or may not do it, for now, there's a spring in his step. You hope the best for him, but for now, you go to your own class.

Still, non-humans don't come this deep into human territory though. Elves, while physically the closest, almost never leave their forests except when trading or going on a 20 year drunken rampage. Dwarves usually have stable opportunities in their own territories brewing, building (You'd love to get your hands on some of their schematics one day) mining, fighting and the like, so they don't come to your little slice of the world that much. You don't know much about other non-human races, and the only troll you've ever met spend his days living under a bridge handing out stones with his name carved in them.

He... probably wasn't right in the head.

In fact, most non-humans around here would be adventurers, trying to make their fortune either hunting treasure or taking any job for the highest bidder. You're surprised that you hadn't been attacked by a non-human adventurer lately.

...you hope you didn't just jinx yourself.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You go to Cidium's classroom. It's early, so there's only one other student here, a scrawny man with messy black hair and a scar on his face. He's engrossed into the tome, clearly too busy to notice you. Cidium is sitting at the desk in front of the room, writing something on the large sheet of paper hanging from the ceiling. Something that you're sure you'll have a better understanding of after the class. As you walk closer, he turns towards you.

"So, another student shows up early. What can I do for you" He asks in a friendly tone.

"I actually had a question for you" You admit. You remember hearing the tail end of what his lecture on summoning, but you missed it. Mostly because you were halfway out the door for the class you needed to teach. "What were you saying? About things to remember when summoning?"

Cidium just chuckles "Ah. It's been a while, I'd almost forgotten about that!" He says as he invites you to sit down. "Like I said before, a lot of basic summoning is taking a mindless spirit and giving it a form in this world. Most things you'll learn how to summon, they'll obey you, since that's all they can do"

Cidium suddenly leans closer to you, his eyes piercing, as if staring right into your soul. "But there are powerful spirits. Spirits that can think for themselves. Some are demons, tempting you with power at great costs. Others are simply driven with rage and only wish to destroy. Others have grand schemes for this world, schemes that are a detriment to anyone that would be involved"

"What I was going to tell you is that if you summon something that can think, make sure that you can kill it. Else you find yourself calling it your master. Or worse..." Without another word, he goes back to writing, leaving you to reflect on his words.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You and the rest of the class spend the next several hours studying magical theory. How to more effectively cast spells with less mana. How to understand much more complex spells and cast them without them backfiring. He also has your class perform meditations that are supposed to increase the amount of mana you can call on.

By the time you leave, it is late at night and you're armed with your newfound knowledge.

Basic Traps +1, just to ruin the day of everyone with damage resistance.
I mean, imagine a summon specialist who finds out that all our traps strike their ethereal scouts. They are likely to either abandon trip, or treat it as way higher level. Basically, it may lock out a great deal o lower level rabble, which is our actual CL at the moment. Add in our rater generous trap number and pour house may well become a pointless dungeon if we let the story spread.

[X] Read over your spellsbooks/scrolls
- [X] Read the Invocation Scroll

I figure we should figure out to get some summoned help, and get another round of traps sorted in reasonably short order.

Then I think we can consider ourselves in a position of sufficient safety to start looking at long-term stuff, like expansion.
