"Oh nothing." Joseph says.
"Joseph..." You say, folding your arms. "We both know it's something. If you need to talk, I'm here"
Joseph sighs. "Just a... disagreement I had with my boss. He's paying everyone at the center less" Joseph says. "Remember how I bet my raise on this? Well he gave me that raise. After cutting everyone's salary. Said that the Church was giving us less money so he 'has' to get more money somewhere.
Joseph sighs. "The sad part is, I don't know if it's because he's pocketing the money himself or he just hates losing that much that he'd cut everyone's pay just to get back at me" He's shaking again, but this time, it's with anger. After a few seconds, he takes a deep breath.
Being a peasant is a hard life and it isn't for everyone. You should know. You work day in and day out growing crops and you're one bad winter from starving. But it's things like this that keep a lot of people from moving into the city. Here, you were at the mercy of whoever paid you. Sometimes, they were good, understanding people.
Most are not.
And if you drove out your workers, there's probably a halfway competent, destitute foreigner who will happily do the job half as good for an eighth of the money.
"You know, I know a few shopowners. If you want, I could talk to them for you" You offer. You know Margery well enough that she'd be happy to take him aboard. If someone could pry her away from her counter herself. If he could cook, the Hammer and Ales could use a new one.
Joseph shakes his head. "T-t-thanks Def. I might just take you up on that. But for now, I want to try to figure something out on my own" He may have rejected your offer, but the smile on his face is clear as day.
"If you need anything, you know where to find me" You say, waving goodbye to Joseph. "Oh, and if you get the chance, I'd talk to Cidium if I were you. That Passive Enchantment he was talking about? It might be something good." Who knows? Maybe he's a fourth troll. You've seen his parents, but not his grandparents.
Joseph nods before turning to leave. He may or may not do it, for now, there's a spring in his step. You hope the best for him, but for now, you go to your own class.
Still, non-humans don't come this deep into human territory though. Elves, while physically the closest, almost never leave their forests except when trading or going on a 20 year drunken rampage. Dwarves usually have stable opportunities in their own territories brewing, building (You'd love to get your hands on some of their schematics one day) mining, fighting and the like, so they don't come to your little slice of the world that much. You don't know much about other non-human races, and the only troll you've ever met spend his days living under a bridge handing out stones with his name carved in them.
He... probably wasn't right in the head.
In fact, most non-humans around here would be adventurers, trying to make their fortune either hunting treasure or taking any job for the highest bidder. You're surprised that you hadn't been attacked by a non-human adventurer lately.
...you hope you didn't just jinx yourself.

You go to Cidium's classroom. It's early, so there's only one other student here, a scrawny man with messy black hair and a scar on his face. He's engrossed into the tome, clearly too busy to notice you. Cidium is sitting at the desk in front of the room, writing something on the large sheet of paper hanging from the ceiling. Something that you're sure you'll have a better understanding of after the class. As you walk closer, he turns towards you.
"So, another student shows up early. What can I do for you" He asks in a friendly tone.
"I actually had a question for you" You admit. You remember hearing the tail end of what his lecture on summoning, but you missed it. Mostly because you were halfway out the door for the class you needed to teach. "What were you saying? About things to remember when summoning?"
Cidium just chuckles "Ah. It's been a while, I'd almost forgotten about that!" He says as he invites you to sit down. "Like I said before, a lot of basic summoning is taking a mindless spirit and giving it a form in this world. Most things you'll learn how to summon, they'll obey you, since that's all they can do"
Cidium suddenly leans closer to you, his eyes piercing, as if staring right into your soul. "But there are powerful spirits. Spirits that can think for themselves. Some are demons, tempting you with power at great costs. Others are simply driven with rage and only wish to destroy. Others have grand schemes for this world, schemes that are a detriment to anyone that would be involved"
"What I was going to tell you is that if you summon something that can think, make sure that you can kill it. Else you find yourself calling it your master. Or worse..." Without another word, he goes back to writing, leaving you to reflect on his words.

You and the rest of the class spend the next several hours studying magical theory. How to more effectively cast spells with less mana. How to understand much more complex spells and cast them without them backfiring. He also has your class perform meditations that are supposed to increase the amount of mana you can call on.
By the time you leave, it is late at night and you're armed with your newfound knowledge.
