Gundam Crucible - [An AU Universal Century Quest]

Chapter 17-The First Newtype-Part 1
[X][Dr. Bidan] Agree to regular appointments to help work through your "issues".

[X][Story Arc] "The First Newtype" (Mission Option One)

You glare at Dr. Bidan. You do not need to see a shrink! You don't!

But if it'll keep him from taking away your Gundam, you guess you could agree to some remote therapy or some shit.

"…So to clarify, I regularly check in, we talk for a bit, and you won't keep me out of the cockpit?" You keep eye contact, watching for any signs of deception. He just nods.

"Yes, so long as you actually improve… or at least are stable. As I said, I'm here to help."

You aren't sure if you believe that… but you aren't sure whether it's because he's untrustworthy, or whether it's because you don't want to trust him. You don't want to think about it too much. He gets to talk to you about your feelings every so often, you get to keep flying. Everyone goes home happy. You refuse to think about it any deeper than that.

Having lived in a Colony your whole life, you've never experienced that "Going to the Big City" feeling in your life. You never really thought you would, given that you lived in an actual city in Cascadia.

But this? This place, Londenion, is the big city. Cascadia was the damn boonies, you get that now.

A day out on the town, in the largest city on Londenion, situated near Londo Bell HQ. It's nice that you get close to a week to relax and unwind from the absolute rollercoaster the last week has been. Just last week you were spending your days going to the Simulators, hanging out with your friends, dreaming of far-off dreams.

A week ago, Kaylen was still alive.

Now here you are, a MacDaniels shake in hand, checking out a Video Store… after days of nothing but fighting, fighting, fighting… You have to stop yourself from hurling your shake at the poor cashier and screaming.

Maybe Dr. Bidan was right. Talking might do you some good.

You glance over at your friends, Eris and Theo, as they argue about comedy films near the relevant section of the store. You finish up your own browsing, grabbing a box set of "Watership Down" to buy. Looks like a cute cartoon about bunnies. Sicilia might like this. You didn't read the description on the back, but come on, it's a cartoon about bunny rabbits. There's no way this thing is inappropriate for kids.

"Big Sis!" Sicilia calls out as she stops rummaging through the Clearance bin, "What about this one? It looks cool!"

You move to look at the disc she's fished out. The cover has some dude on the front who is either snarling intensely, or suffering an agonizing case of constipation.

"Morbius 2: The Morbening." You read the title with no small amount of confusion, followed by the tag line, "The Time to Morb has Returned."

….

What the fuck?

"Sicilia," you gently pull it out of her hands and place it back in the bin, "There's probably a reason that this is on clearance."

She nods, although she does look a bit sad… well, that look fades away as soon as you show her the cartoon boxset you're getting. See? Bunnies always cheer kids up.

You're checking out when Eris runs over with a brochure in her hand, plucked from the little rack for tourists by the door.

"Cybele, look!" She all but shoves the thing in your face, filling your eyes with the Londo Bell emblem.

"What am I looking at here?" You ask, trying to move away from the piece of low-quality paper pressed against your nose.

"It's the Universal Century Museum! It just opened last month!" She explains, practically vibrating in excitement, "I remember hearing about this a few years ago! It's amazing! We have to go!"

You snatch the brochure and pull it away from your face. Huh. Londo Bell plastered their emblem all over the front of this thing. Universal Century Museum, or Propaganda Museum? You wonder.

"What's admission like?" You ask, sparing Sicilia a glance. She should be able to get in on a kid's ticket, but honestly money is kind of tight. Yeah, Londo Bell gave you some relief money that should last you till your first paycheck, but your life savings are locked up in an abandoned bank on a derelict colony now. You have more than enough to buy food and essentials, and even this cute-looking cartoon about bunnies, but museum tickets can be pricey.

Eris flips the brochure to the last page, "Free! They aren't charging admission! Just asking for donations!"

"Come on, Cybele," Theo pops in, grinning, "They have the RX-78-2!"

"That can't be the real thing," you frown skeptically, "I thought that was lost at A Baou Qu?"

"Who cares if it's the real thing or not?" Eris pouts, "It's the original Gundam!"

"I dunno…" You mutter, closing the brochure. Yeah, you aren't going, you're just not interested.

But then Sicilia bounces up, excited and bubbly.

"I wanna go! I wanna go!" She repeats, giggling, "Take me, Big Sis!"

Damn it. Fine.

You relent, and the other three cheer as you surrender to their whims. The things you do for friends.

It's tall.

Like, really fucking tall. You bet the gravity up at the top floor is at the bare minimum for safety.

White, sloped walls, and it's pretty deep and wide… about the length of a battleship, and twice as wide as one. Surrounded by neatly-cut green lawns, the museum is the most imposing structure around. Various couples, families, and parties are utilizing the wide-open space to play catch, have picnics, and just generally relax.

Very idyllic. You wonder if this is staged.

"Oh my god," Eris gasps as you pass through the front doors, "This is amazing! Just like those promotional renders!"

The entryway is a giant three-sided box that melds into the building. Reception desks sit near the front, flanked by benches. Behind it, dead center at the far wall, is a massive recreation of a Pegasus-class's hangar doors, open and waiting for visitors. It's flanked by two huge banners against a metal wall, each bearing the Londo Bell emblem. Just in front of the open doors is a replica of the Universal Century charter. Off to the right side is a fairly large Café that shares room with the Lobby. You can smell something nice coming from it. To the right are four large escalators coming from somewhere above. That must be the exit, since people are only descending from there.

Over the museum's speakers, a somewhat grandiose and trumpet-heavy song is playing. Oh yeah, you think you've heard this before. The Ra Cailum's band performed this a few years ago for a fundraiser. You watched the broadcast of it.

"So big!" Sicilia laughs, running past you just to run in circles a little distance away. You gotta admit, she's pretty cute.

Theo briefly leaves the group to grab a map, and you peer over it with him and Eris while Sicilia just turns the crank on one of those coin souvenir machines.

"Okay, so they have nine wings," Theo points to the respective maps on the pamphlet, "Federation and Zeon wings for the One Year War. AEUG, Titans, and Axis Zeon wings for the Gryps War. AEUG and Zeon wings for the First Neo Zeon War. Then there's the Londo Bell and Zeon wings for the Second Neo Zeon War."

"Eh?" Eris frowns, "What about the third?"

"Too recent," you wave your hand dismissively, "Besides, way I see it, if the Laplace Incident counts as another war, it technically hasn't ended yet."

Nobody has any response to that. Yeah, it's a bit sobering.

"Anyways, it looks like this is a linear setup, so we'll go through the wings one by one," Theo finally finishes, "might take us a few hours."

"Any good museum takes at least a few hours to go through." Eris insists, nodding confidently.

You still remember the first time you visited her house. She made you stay in the downstairs museum portion for a while, continuously prompting you to "soak in the history", whatever that meant.

The four of you pass through the large hangar doors, and are immediately greeted with the grand-daddy of all Gundams, the RX-78-2 itself. It stands at the front of a row of Mobile Suits, all lined up like they're getting ready to launch. The wing itself is fashioned like the hangar of a Pegasus-class, albeit modified for ease of navigation.

"There it is!" Eris squeals, grabbing Theo's hand, "Come on, let's get a closer look!"

You follow the two, with Sicilia hot on your heels. She's pretty fixated on the Gundam, so you give her a lift on your shoulders.

"Gundams are the enemy…" You hear her mutter. That's weird, where'd she hear that?

"No, Gundams are our friends," you correct her with a chuckle, "unless they're hijacked, in which case they're our enemies. Depends on who's flying it, Little Sis."

"… Frenemies." She replies. You imagine her face is screwed up in confusion, but you can't see her right now, busy carrying her.

As you expected, this RX-78-2 isn't the Gundam Amuro used at the Battle of A Baou Qu. That particular Mobile Suit was destroyed. However, the Core Fighter was recovered, repaired, and then this Gundam was assembled using the Core Fighter and non-functional damaged parts that were replaced over the course of the Gundam's service.

So… essentially, this is still the Gundam. It's not operational, and is really just junk given a touch-up, but still. This is history.

A little mini-documentary plays by the Gundam's feet, showing old war footage along with post-war interviews with Amuro Ray. It's… strange to see him that young. Hell, at that time he was around the same age as you.

The rest of that wing shows off an original Guncannon, Guntank, GM, and Ball. Off to the side are some Saberfish and the decapitated cockpit of a Public, but they're not really something you're interested in.

Near the door leading to the Zeon wing is a row of simulator pods, all with screens next to them showing what the current user is seeing. Above the simulators is a giant sign, asking, "Would you survive the Battle of A Baou Qu?" An informational billboard next to the simulators inform everyone that a similar row of simulators is set up in the Zeon wing for those wishing to participate on the other side of the conflict.

You, Eris, and Theo stare at the sign before sharing the same wide mischievous grin. Most of the kids using that simulator are kids too…

So, it's seal-clubbing time.

"Get him off of me!" You snap into your headset as you throw your GM Command sideways. Slow OYW piece of shit! Machine Gun fire zips by the cockpit as the pursuing Zaku fires another burst. You retaliate with the Beam Gun, but it dodges at the last second. Zippy little bastard!

"On it." Theo answers, followed by an incoming cannon round which the Zaku narrowly avoids… only to be nailed by the follow-up round. It explodes into bits instantly.

"Splash three!" He calls out, his GM Cannon boosting past you, laying down more fire at an approaching Gelgoog. Luring the Zeon MS in close, he sidekicks at the last moment, clearing the way for Eris to core it with her Beam Sniper Rifle.

"Splash four!" Eris cheers, and the three of you reposition to lure in some more unwitting Zeeks. You must have run this kind of sim a hundred times on both sides of the conflict, so this is old hat. True, these museum simulators restrict you to certain GM variations, otherwise you'd be flying something more obscure, but a GM Command suits you just fine.

You try and identify another "player" in this massive battle, but it's hard to tell the kids from the simulated Zeon cadets. They're all pretty unskilled.

"Big Sis, Big Sis!" Sicilia calls out, flying past in her GM, holding Spray Beam Guns in both hands, "Watch me!"

She dives her machine into a cluster of Rick Doms, positioning herself so that they can't shoot without possibly hitting friendlies. Her guns flash, and one by one her enemies vanish.

"Whoa," Eris pulls up alongside you, "She's good."

"Yeah," you answer quietly, "I mean, she's a Cyber Newtype."

You can only imagine what carnage she'd be able to wreak if these sims let you choose Newtype-use Suits.

But then it happens. Five yellow beams lance out and take Sicilia's left arm off. She's already moving before the second salvo comes at her from another direction, grazing the left leg. Her MS trails smoke and flames.

"Sicilia!" You gun your thrusters and rush forward, frantically scanning your monitors. That was fire from the Zeong, right? A few flashes of movement catch your eye, but by the time you've turned to look, there's nothing there.

Then another salvo hits you, taking both the legs off of your GM.

"Damn it!" you dump more power into your remaining thrusters, trying to dodge the next shot.

"Cybele, don't worry, I'm-!" Theo rushes to you, but you see five more beams hit the back of his Mobile Suit, cleaving it in two.

"Theo!" Eris screams in a somewhat melodramatic tone, firing her Beam Sniper Rifle at a fast-approaching blur. It dodges, and fires a salvo of beams directly into her. Her Mobile Suit comes apart, exploding seconds after.

The enemy comes to a stop near you, and for a second you stare him down. Char Aznable.

Well, a simulation of him, but still.

You try to aim your Beam Gun, but he takes off the arm. The next shot will finish you.

"Big Sis!" Sicilia's GM slams into the Zeong, making him miss. He throws her off of him and aims his hands at her-!

There's something like a flash of intuition, and it looks like Sim-Char felt it too, as he immediately aborts his attack and fires his main thrusters. A pink beam spears the space he was just occupying.

The RX-78-2 comes rushing in, Beam Rifle in one hand and Hyper Bazooka in the other. It's Amuro Ray! Or, his combat data at least. He fires off four bazooka rounds, trying to box Char in. Char dives for an opening and the rockets barely miss. Amuro hurls his Hyper Bazooka at Char, and then fires his Beam Rifle ahead of Char, forcing the man to brake… and the Hyper Bazooka is on course to slam into him.

That alone won't do much damage… so you switch to Head Vulcans and take a shot.

Your small-caliber rounds intersect the bazooka as it collides with the Zeong, and the resulting explosion damages the large skirt armor!

You can almost feel Char's simulated pilot glaring at you before breaking off to fight Amuro alone. Watching the White Meteor fight from a distance… it's almost mesmerizing. You've seen so many pilots burn propellant going evasive, but Amuro… he uses the absolute bare minimum, only adjusting course when he needs to. He dodges before the enemy has even pulled the trigger, but no movement is wasted. It's clear to see just how outmatched Char is. Sicilia gives chase in her damaged MS, and you have half a mind to chew her out for such recklessness.

Then a stray shot from a Musai takes you out.

"…Damn it." You sigh as the simulator opens up, revealing a smirking Theo and Eris.

"Didn't last that much longer than us, huh?" Eris helps you out, "Well, not much you can do against Char when you can't customize your Mobile Suit."

"Yeah, but I think we did okay," you shrug, "I scratched his paint a bit. Dented that pretty skirt on the Zeong."

"In a GM Command?" Theo raises an eyebrow, "I know we're good, but we're not that good."

As he says that, a little machine on the side of your simulator rings, printing out what looks to be a certificate. Intrigued, you pick it up and read it with the others.

"… 'You Damaged the Red Comet'…" you read off the title, "Huh, well, nice little souvenir, I guess. Kind of a novelty though."

Suddenly there's an alarm, and confetti poppers go off on top of all the simulators, making the three of you almost jump out of your skin.

Sicilia's simulator slowly opens up, revealing the ecstatic Cyber Newtype.

"Big Sis! Big Sis!" She cheers, "I did it!"

"Did what?" You walk over to her, and just as you reach her the printer on the side of her simulator spits out a certificate. You pick it up and your eyes practically bulge out of your head.

Eris looks over your shoulder and has a similar reaction.

"You shot down Char?!" She gapes at the little girl, who giggles happily. There's no way, her GM was already pretty damaged!

Then the monitors do a replay. She rushed Char while he was preoccupied with Amuro, and when he finally noticed he fired everything he had at Sicilia, taking the head and legs, but missing her GM's right arm… which she then used to grab her Beam Saber and bisect the Zeong.

Her GM pretty much exploded right afterwards, but still.

"…Okay, yeah, nice job," You pat her on the head, "But don't do anything that reckless in a real fight, okay? We want everyone to come home."

She nods. Shooting down Char is something to be proud of, even if it was a mutual-kill…

…Speaking of which, that museum attendant doesn't look too impressed.

"Hey," You wave to get his attention, "How often does Char get shot down in these things anyways?"

He shrugs in disinterest, "Once every other day or so. Usually to kamikaze runs like what that kid just did. I've never seen anyone take him down in a fair fight."

Huh. Makes sense. Most of the Pilots in that battle didn't want to die, and they knew that their enemies wanted to live as well. You can't imagine that Char dealt with many suicidal Pilots in his career at that point. The combat data-driven AI just probably didn't know what to do.

Also, this is essentially just a game for kids. You wouldn't be surprised if the parameters of the NPCs have been turned down.

"Well, should we head onto the next wing?" Eris suggests, pointing to the door to the Zeon wing for the OYW, "They've got a Zakrello! We should get a photo next to it!"

Everyone makes a silly face next to the ridiculous Mobile Armor, and as the little camera flashes you briefly forget just how much your life has crumbled around you.

It's in the Neo Zeon wing for the First Neo Zeon War that it happens. In a large room built to look like a hangar in Axis, Sicilia freezes in front of one of the Mobile Suits. A large, black Mass Production Qubeley. You almost don't notice, only stopping when you see that she didn't follow you.

"…Sicilia?" You walk back to her, "Are you okay?"

She doesn't respond, fixated on the giant Mobile Suit in front of her. She looks… almost horrified.

You still don't know everything that happened to her when she was with Neo Zeon. The Gundam Team from the Argama said that the Ple clones were brainwashed, but… how? You haven't noticed any really weird behavior from Sicilia, and even then, how do you know what sets her off?

"Hey," You kneel down next to her, "We can move on if you want."

Sicilia stays silent. You pull her gently away, and she lets herself be led after you. It's only after that you've left for the next wing that she seems to return to her senses. She still doesn't say anything, but holds onto your arm tightly. You let her hug you like that.

Maybe Dr. Bidan should be talking to Sicilia too? You'll ask when you have your appointment with him.

The final wing, the one dedicated to Londo Bell in Second Neo Zeon War, is grand and magnificent. It's a large circular room with vaulted ceilings and plenty of lighting. Mobile Suits ring the room, mostly Jegan variants, but the center of the room is dominated by the imposing figure of the RX—93 Nu Gundam, Fin Funnels and all. It's holding its Beam Rifle upright, as if ready to stride into combat. At its feet are informational displays and screens showing mini-documentaries and interviews with Amuro. A large glass display case shows Amuro's many military commendations, right alongside another case with a large model of Axis suspended in the center. Along the bottom, small models of Jegans, Geara Dogas, and GM IIIs can be seen pressed up against its surface, all trying to push it away from the Earth. In the center is a tiny Nu Gundam, with lighting making it seem to shimmer green.

Amuro Ray… The First Newtype, the White Meteor, Hero of the One Year War, and Savior of the Earth. He enacted a miracle… so they say.

You quietly read the various billboards and placards situated around the Nu Gundam, as does everyone else. While most of the other wings are filled with the sounds of conversation, this one is silent. The only noise comes from the videos playing on the screens.

Then you come to the last video.

"Amuro Ray, missing in action." The narrator speaks as a photo of Amuro in civilian clothing pans across the screen, "While usually the status is symbolic, in this case it's very literal."

A Federation official comes on screen, being interviewed, "Salvage crews were able to recover the Nu Gundam. It was in a stable orbit and intact. The reactor was still running, although it had run out of propellant."

"What of the pilot?" someone offscreen asks, "Did you recover a body?"

"…No," the official shakes his head, "The cockpit was absent. It appears that Captain Ray ejected at some point. Given the circumstances, it's likely he reentered the atmosphere and burnt up."

The video fades to an interview with Captain Bright, although he looks much younger in the video.

"It's unlikely that Amuro is still alive," Bright admits with a bitter smile, "but I like to think that he is, and he's just given us all the slip. That he's spending his days relaxing, enjoying life… enjoying a kind of peace that he should have had when he was a kid. I know this sounds a bit cheesy, but whether he's alive or dead, I know he's in a better place."

"If Amuro Ray is still alive, do you think he'll ever come back?" the interviewer asks, "Would he come out of hiding, if he is in fact alive?"

"…Yes, I do think he would," Bright nods, "Amuro isn't the sort of man who can sit around and watch injustice just happen. If we ever truly needed him back, I think he would return."

Eris sighs as the video fades to black, "Well… it's been a while since we needed him. I think we can safely say that he's dead."

"Yeah," you nod, "Wishful thinking is just that… well, at least he didn't live to see that he saved Earth only for it to all burn again."

What would Amuro say if he could see the Earth Sphere now? Would he be disillusioned by the Federation? Would he be disgusted that nothing has changed? Would he be proud that his friends and comrades are finally fighting for freedom?

You guess you'll never know.

[][Impression] The museum is just Feddie propaganda slightly retooled to suit Londo Bell's narrative. These regimes are all the same.

"So," you lean forward, looking at the driver as he guides the small elecar between rows of massive warehouses, each with big sliding doors stretching from ground to roof, "How did Londo Bell end up with all the old Titans stuff anyways? I think I know the general story, but I've never heard about it in detail."

"Oh, it's not that complicated," the young man chuckles as he drives you, Rhea, and Sicilia through the storage complex, "After Londo Bell was formed, we were given a lot of the old Titans infrastructure and facilities, which came with a lot of their equipment. The stuff that hadn't been scuttled or looted, anyways."

The elecar slows, and he puts it in park in front of a large, disused-looking warehouse, "Anytime we got old Titans gear from cleanup operations, we got to keep it. It just kind of piled up over time. I think the Commander didn't like to use most of it because of the baggage it carried, but it's war, so we don't have a choice now."

As he messes with his keys, trying to find the right one, Rhea asks, "So how did you acquire the materials from the Titans' TR program? Anaheim has been looking for any surviving materials for years, and you just happened to have them sitting in a warehouse?"

"Well, I wasn't with Londo Bell when it happened, but I did take a look at the notes associated with the recovered equipment," he explains, unlocking the door, "We raided a Titans production facility that failed to surrender themselves after the end of the war. The engineers there attempted to destroy their equipment, but I guess they didn't have enough explosives on hand. In the end, they just ended up wiping the OS off of every Mobile Suit and module they had on hand, and we were never able to recover the data. The officer in charge of the operation wasn't able to find anyone who knew what they'd seized, and so it just got thrown into storage and forgotten about… at least until you dug through our files like a madwoman, ma'am."

Stepping inside, he flips a clunky switch on the wall, and rows of ceiling lamps snap on with audible clanks. The area inside is massive, easily big enough to park a few Cruisers in. Strewn across the floor, on shelves, and stacked atop each other are pieces of machinery, some recognizable as Mobile Suit option parts, others far more enigmatic. Standing in the center of this grand mess, two Mobile Suits loom. Their silhouette is distinctive, and although they're slumped and damaged, you recognize them.

"…More Woundworts." You mutter, but Rhea looks like she's died and gone to heaven.

"I was so worried about spare parts," she giggles excitedly, "but it looks like that won't be an issue! Um, Lieutenant, you said that the OS on the Mobile Suits and all the option parts had been wiped?"

He nods, "Yeah, it pretty much bricked every bit of tech in here. I guess we probably could have figured it all out eventually, but nobody has really tried."

"Of course, it's not like the officer in charge of the operation thought to run these things by Anaheim or anything." Bitterness seeps into Rhea's excitement, "Well, what's done is done. We have the equipment now, and that's what matters. I better start restoration and repairs soon… I hope the damage isn't too extensive."

"Do you think you can get some of these things working before the mission?" You cut into Rhea's little monologue before she gets too into it, "Outfitting my Gundam takes priority, right?"

"Of course, of course," she waves you off, "I'll let you know what configurations will be available to you after I finish cataloguing all of this by the end of the day. By the time the mission begins, I'll have the necessary modules ready to go."

"Oh! Oh!" Sicilia points at one of the derelict TR-6 units, "Can I fly one like Big Sis?"

"No, not yet." Rhea quickly shoots her down, "Until I have enough data to manufacture new replacement parts, we're keeping those two in reserve to supply spare parts."

You wished you knew a bit more about this so you could help things go faster, but as Rhea starts ranting to herself with folders and laptop in hand, you decide to leave her to it. Although, you are a bit excited to see what she can do to your Woundwort now that she has all these extra parts. She did say that the TR-6 was one of the most customizable Mobile Suits ever designed. She better put her money where her mouth is!

You gape at the report that Rhea just handed to you, with Eris and Theo sharing your expression. Sicilia is straining to get a look at the pages.

"Well? Take your time deciding." She grins cockily, "These are just the loadouts I can get working with by end of week. Londo Bell and the local branch of AE (which doesn't officially exist, so shhh~!) have given me a bit of a budget to work with. Any surplus I'm left with after getting your loadout set up, I'm going to dedicate to reverse-engineering the materials we have on hand. Because the more components we can manufacture ourselves, the more flexibility we'll have down the line. You'll even be able to design your own configurations! But until then, these are your choices!"

You adjust the collar on your new uniform, very conscious of the looks you're getting as you walk back onto the Bellerophon. Sure, your uniform isn't anything unusual, but you've thrown your father's leather jacket over it. Nobody has given you any flak about so far, but you don't hold out hope that will stay the case… still, you won't stop wearing it, no matter what anyone says.

The ship is a lot busier than you remember it, although you suppose that it's just at normal capacity now. Seriously, it had a skeleton crew when you first boarded! But now that it's finally home, you're getting a full crew, full engineering team, mechanics, and… well, you guess another Mobile Suit team, because you don't remember those units being here earlier. Three of them are slightly customized Jegans, but the fourth…

"Big Sis, who flies that one?" Sicilia, now clothed in a rather cute pink cadet uniform, points out the rather distinctive white-and-black Mobile Suit sporting a Monoeye and two big Wing Binders… looks like a Rick Dijeh, if you had to take a guess, although it's been modified a bit.

"That would be me." A woman answers, making the two of you turn towards the speaker. She looks to be in her late 30s or early 40s, has deep red hair, bright green eyes, and a kind smile. She offers her hand, "I'm Commander Christina Mackenzie, I'm leading the Bellerophon's second Mobile Suit team. We'll be working together."

You shake her hand. She's got a nice, firm grip, although you note that she doesn't squeeze Sicilia's hand quite as tightly. Christina actually looks a bit surprised at Sicilia herself.

"She's your little sister?" She asks, which makes you smile a bit. You never really thought of yourself as the big sister type, but you could get used to this. Taking care of Sicilia is kind of nice… you wonder if Kaylen liked taking care of you in the same manner.

"In a sense," you answer, "but she's also my copilot."

Christina's expression seems to freeze at that, but whatever reaction wanted to surface, she manages to force it down.

"I… see…" She pauses, "… Captain Nouri briefed me on the situation of you and your friends, but I never realized…"

"I get that we're pretty young, but we're Newtypes." You counter resolutely, "Staying out of the fighting isn't an option for us."

Her face seems to fall at that, before she sighs, "No… I guess it isn't, is it? My apologies, Ensign Naese. With what you've been through, I shouldn't treat either of you like kids."

That makes you feel a bit better, you guess. Kind of weird to be called an Ensign, but since you're with a Mobile Suit Pilot with Londo Bell now, you need to be an officer at least in rank. You just hope that you don't have to stick too closely to military regulation. Captain Nouri said that Bright gave you and your friends some special exemptions, but still…

Later that Week...

The Bellerophon slowly inched out of port, igniting its main engines as soon as it cleared the hatch. It set a course for the remains of Axis, the ruined asteroid habitat stuck in an elliptical orbit around the Earth. At the same time, the Ra Cailum left Londenion's final defense line, bound for the Shoal Zone. On board, the famed Shezarr Team. Meanwhile, a single Salamis slipped away, heading for low earth orbit. Elle Vianno watched Londenion grow distant through the window, before turning to look at her young charge. She wondered why Bright chose this boy in particular to be their representative…

Bellerophon- Mission Briefing Room

"We're currently at the perimeter of Axis airspace." Captain Nouri points to the map, then to the Bellerophon's position, "Minovsky Particle density is high, so we can assume that the Federation has a presence here, likely ships stationed on the far side of Axis. Composition of the enemy forces is unknown, so we will need to conduct reconnaissance before anything else… although…"

She switched the display to an image taken with one of the ship's telescopes, showing a long red warship with an aft reminiscent of a Musai but a prow like the Gwadan, escorted by two green Musai-shaped ships of much smaller tonnage. The photo is fuzzy, but the designs are unmistakably Zeon in origin.

"A task force of unknown affiliation is present on this side of Axis as well. They're out of comms range, and Minovsky interference makes communication with them impossible. The main ship seems to be a Sadalahn-class Battleship, with the escorts being refurbished Musai-class Cruisers." She looks out at the assembled Pilots, "If they are with the Republic of Zeon, then it's possible that we could coordinate our efforts here. However, if they're Neo Zeon Remnants, then we might be facing a two-way battle here."

The Captain addresses Christina first, "Commander, I want you and your team to investigate the interior of Axis. This is only a scouting mission. If you encounter enemy resistance, fall back so that we can regroup."

She sighs, "I would like to establish contact with that other fleet to see if they're friend or foe, but we also need eyes on whatever the Federation brought to the table… so congratulations Ensign Naese, you get to pick your mission."

You get to pick? Huh, you were almost expecting her to demand you obey orders and not ask questions, but… this might be nice.

You turn back to look at the rest of the Cascadia Team, "What do you guys think?"

Sicilia does a little salute, "Whatever Captain Big Sis thinks!"

Eris hums in consideration, "Well, the Federation might be hiding something big, but at the same time, we can't leave those Zeon ships out there to do whatever they want. We should talk to them, one less thing to worry about."

"I dunno, they're probably trying to guess who we're with as well." Theo chimes in, "So they're in a similar boat to us. It's why we haven't attacked yet, and vice versa. If we do something to upset the status quo, a fight might break out even if they aren't Neo Zeon."

"Good point," Mort comments, "but what if they decide to break the status quo on their own? And if they're allies, then we've got this mission in the bag, don't we? Three ships can carry a lot of Mobile Suits, and unless the Feddies brought a whole fleet to the party, we'll have the numbers advantage."

"But what if they did bring a fleet?" Theo counters, "If we don't scout them, we won't know until they make an attack run on the Bellerophon!"

"It is a conundrum, isn't it?" You nod slowly, considering all their opinions, "Commander Mackenzie, what are your thoughts?"

"I can't manage your team for you," she answers apologetically, "but if it helps, I'd appreciate it if you scouted out the Federation forces for me and my team. You'll be closer if we need help, in that case."

[][Plan] Establish contact with the Zeon task force.

[][Plan] Scout the Federation forces on the far side of Axis.

Extra Record-1-Lingering Echoes
Londenion-Universal Century War Museum

Your name is Sicilia Ple 42, and...
You can't stop staring.
It looms over you, black and imposing.

Your name is Ple 8. You have one purpose in life, to serve Master Glemy!
But... you can't feel him anymore!

There's something inside this Mobile Suit, pulling you in.
Deeper.

"The enemies of Master Glemy did this!" you hear one of your sisters shout.
One of many faces he showed you comes to the surface.
Haman Karn.
She needs to die.

Deeper.

You make your Funnels dance as you fire your Beam Guns and Active Cannons at the white Qubeley, but she slips through the gaps in your barrage. How? How is one woman doing this?! You have to avenge Master Glemy, that's all that matters now!

Deeper.

Your sisters are vanishing.
Each loss is like a piece of your heart torn out.
It's getting harder and harder to keep fighting.
You deploy your Beam Saber and rush Haman Karn with a scream on your lips.

Deeper.

Burning. You're burning.
Your Qubeley won't move.
A fire started somewhere inside the Mobile Suit, and the cockpit is getting hotter and hotter.
Flames are starting to eat their way through the walls.
There's no ejection system, the fire suppression system is down, and the hatch is stuck.

You're scared.

"Sicilia...?" Big Sis walks over to you, concern on her face, "Are you okay?"
Your voice won't come out. You're not here.

Everything is burning. You are burning.
You cry, but no one comes. Like always.
No one cared if you cried back at the lab.
Master Glemy said that crying is a sign of weakness. That none of you should cry, no matter the reason.
But is it wrong to cry for him? To cry for your sisters?
To cry for yourself?
You pull one last time at the hatch's emergency release with hands you can no longer feel. It doesn't move.

"Hey," Big Sis kneels down next to you, holding you, "We can move on if you want."
Even your tears won't come out. You're trapped, just like her.

Was it always this hard to breathe? You can't remember.
This isn't what you wanted. This isn't what you were promised.
Your body isn't moving the way you want it to.
The pain and the burning stopped a while ago too, but you can't tell whether that's a good thing.
You feel your sisters through the Psycommu. They can feel you.
One by one they're being snuffed out, like candles in a strong wind.
They can't save you. Nobody can save them.
Every last one of you is doomed.
You've failed Master Glemy. You've failed each other.

Big Sis pulls you away, her hand firmly holding yours.
Your legs won't listen to you, but they walk all the same.

...
It doesn't hurt anymore. You can't feel anyone fighting anymore.
You open your eyes and look down at yourself. Your Normal Suit is gone, leaving you in your regular clothing.
The cockpit is burnt and scorched, but there are no flames.
With a hiss, the hatch opens, and bright light spills inside. You shield your eyes against the sudden shine.
Then she stands there, reaching down to you.
Your sister. The first.

"What are you doing in here?" She asks with an excited smile, "Everyone is waiting!"

You take her hand, and a warmth blossoms in your chest.
What is this compassion? This sense of liberty?
You've never known this before.

"My name is Elpeo Ple!" She says as she pulls you into the light, "I'm so happy to meet you!"

Bellerophon-Cybele's Quarters
You are Cybele Naese and you are hanging out with your Little Sis, but she doesn't look too good.
You're not sure what's got her so down, but you've got just the thing to make her feel better.

You were wrong about the bunny cartoon.
Oh god, you were so wrong.

Chapter 18: The First Newtype-Part 2
[X][Impression] Become an Amuro Groupie. Purchase Amuro Ray merchandise from the Gift Shop.

Londenion-Universal Century War Museum-Before Departure

You've never seen Amuro Ray fly before.

Well… you should rephrase that. You've seen documentary footage of him in combat. You've fought with and against AI that were trained on what little declassified combat data there is of him. However, all of that was far from actually watching the behavior of an AI trained on actual uncensored combat data from his own RX-78-2.

The way he fought was simply mesmerizing. It was unlike anything you've ever seen before. You want to be that good of a pilot someday, and maybe even that strong of a Newtype.

You'll never meet the man, since he's dead and gone, but you can get the closest thing to him.

His merch.

"Um, Cybele?" Theo watches you, worried as you dump a pile of stuff from the gift shop in front of the poor cashier, "Are you alright?"

You give him a weird look, "Uh, yeah, why do you ask?"

He just stares in concern as you bag your Amuro Ray hat, "I Love the White Meteor" T-Shirt, White Base commuter mug (Amuro variant), RX-78-2 model kit, Amuro Ray model kit, an Amuro Ray biography, "The Next-Generation of Mobile Suit Design" by Amuro Ray, Amuro Ray pajama set, and Londo Bell Loungewear (Amuro variant).

"She's better than alright, Theo!" Eris cuts in with theatrical flair, "She's awakened to the glory of the White Meteor! Cybele finally appreciates just what a legend Amuro Ray was!"

"…I wouldn't go that far." You laugh off her antics as you bag your Amuro Ray dakimura, "I just think he's a really good Pilot, and I want to be as good as him."

Sicilia pokes around the Clearance section of the gift shop, trying to get a good look at a Quattro Bajeena T-Shirt going for 90% off. You motion for her to get it if she wants it.

"So… it's just idolizing then?" Theo asks, although the expression on his face says that he doesn't believe that at all.

"Yep, just idolizing him. As a Pilot." You nod, bagging the last item (DIY Haro Kit-Amuro Voice Variant), "Now, if you're quite done fussing over my spending habits, let's grab a snack at the Café, huh?"

Most of their menu consisted of hot dogs and burgers. Weird.

[X][Loadout] WOUNDWORT-RAH – Hrududu II Unlocked

Bellerophon Hangar-Present

"…Okay, I'll admit," you whistle with appreciation at your Gundam's new loadout, "This is a significant improvement."

"Yeah, it's amazing what you can do with a Hrududu!" Rhea preens, gesturing grandly at your Mobile Suit's new loadout. It is quite an impressive upgrade too.

While the base form is unchanged, two Hrududu II units have been divided into pairs and attached onto the hips and shoulders. It's almost like you're a giant flying X now. In addition, you now have two Composite Shield Boosters total!

"I installed a proper dual-seater cockpit for you and the little one." She adds, "No need to thank me. She's all yours! Oh, but do keep in mind, you can still transform, but I don't think this setup is balanced with that in mind. The acceleration in Mobile Armor mode is a bit over the top."

You wave off her concern with a laugh. Over the top? Impossible. Sure, the added Hrududus easily double the size of your Mobile Suit, but the added thrust can't be that much.

Right?

[X][Plan] Scout the Federation forces on the far side of Axis.

It's a lot of thrust.

You think you almost blacked out on launch. You swear you and Sicilia left imprints on the seat cushioning before you dialed back the thrusters.

"Holy shit," you hear Eris through the radio, "Cybele, Sicilia, you girls okay? You launched like a bat out of hell."

"Y-Yeah, just getting my bearings," you nervously laugh, taking note of how much thrust is too much, "This is nothing. I'm fine. More importantly, how's our gymnast?"

"Haha," Theo laughs dryly as he pulls up alongside you in his Sinanju Stein, "Very funny. Riddhe helped me tune the responsiveness down a bit, and I got a few pointers from Commander Mackenzie. She has some experience handling overly responsive Suits."

You glance at Christina's team as they travel parallel to yours. You're both heading to Axis, but she's heading straight in whilst you're looping around the outside to check out the rear. A Rick Dijeh leading three Jegans… it makes for an odd sight.

"Isn't the Rick Dijeh an Ace Unit?" You muse as you leave radio range of the Bellerophon, switching to laser comms, "You don't see too many of those flying around."

"A Devil flew it."

Huh? Did Sicilia just say something?

You look to her, and she just looks back in confusion. Huh. You must be imagining things.

You touch down on the surface of Axis, kicking up a cloud of dust as you brake with your absurd amount of thrusters. Behind you, Eris touches down in her Mk.III, Theo in his Stein, and Mort in his GM III. Honestly, out of the four of you, he's got the oddest one in the group. It's like, a Gundam, Gundam, kind of a Gundam(?), and then a fucking GM.

Oh well. You won't turn down an ally.

"All right, radio silence from here on in," you transmit to the rest of the team via optical link, "If you need to communicate, use a contact link or optical. Only break radio silence if we are directly attacked."

Three heads nod, and you turn back around and lead the team forwards. The idea is that by keeping thruster use minimal, you're less likely to attract attention. Axis has very weak gravity, so even your Woundwort with its space-use legs can get around fairly easily. In that respect, though, you're having a harder time than the other three on the team, who have proper legs.

So, you end up resorting to something like bunny hopping.

"Whee!" Sicilia giggles as you bound slowly across the surface of Axis.

"Glad to see that someone is enjoying this." You chuckle. Sicilia is honestly a joy to be around. Her emotions are so clear, so pure, and they just… you don't know how to describe it, but you can pretty much feel how she feels. When she's happy, it bleeds into your mood. When she's sad, it reflects on your as well. You just wanna protect this innocent cinnamon bun.

But that's not exactly true, is it? Sicilia isn't just some random little girl. She's a Cyber Newtype clone, born in a lab and raised to be a weapon of Neo Zeon. Already you've seen what she's capable of. As a Pilot, she's deadly, she seems to slip into odd trances every now and then, and… well, seriously, she started chanting "Sieg Zeon!" in the streets!

What should you do? You want to help her, but you're just a kid! You don't know the first thing about healing brainwashing! You better make sure to schedule her appointment with Dr. Bidan ASAP. He's way too blunt for your liking, but if anyone can fix Sicilia…

Wait, you see something.

You skid to a stop and raise your hand, halting the team while you get a better look. Moving to hide behind a nearby outcrop, you switch to the long distance camera.

It's a Jegan, but… those markings, they're not like any Federation division you've seen. You can't see Federation insignia… or any insignia on this thing at all.

"…Black Ops? Feasible Deniability?" You mutter to yourself, "What is with this thing… well, they must be keeping watch."

Hm, between all your team members, who would be the best at taking this guy out silently? Mort? Nah, the dude is packing heavy duty ordinance. He'd be good as a gatecrasher. Theo? He's got his Beam Rifle, a Hyper Bazooka, Beam Saber… honestly, a balanced loadout, but nothing that would take this Jegan down for sure before he alerts his buddies. Eris? The Mk.III is good, but it's all Beam weapons, and most pack too much of a punch to be called stealthy.

The Woundwort-Rah, on the other hand…

You raise both arms, preparing to launch the Composite Shield Boosters. You'll latch onto him with claws, then use the Beam Guns in them to core the cockpit.

"I've got the right claw, you take the left." You order Sicilia. She makes a quiet noise of confirmation.

The Woundwort-Rah jerks a bit as you fire both Boosters, and in your head you guide it in. The Psycommu reads your intent, making the Booster swerve around rocks and debris close to the surface, too low for the Jegan to pick up.

And by the time it does, it's too late.

It begins to turn, having finally picked up the incoming Boosters, but barely manages to move before your Booster snaps into Claw mode and grasps the torso from the back. Sicilia's claw comes right in behind and completely tears off its head from the force of impact. Without hesitation you hit the trigger and a couple of beam shots burst out of its chest.

It stands there, still… and collapses to its knees. Phew, no reactor detonation.

You motion for the others to move forward, and they do.

"Won't be long before they realize they're down a guy…" You sigh. You wish you could have avoided them, but it's not like there's a lot of places to hide in Axis, and if you had to duck inside you might have run into more enemy forces.

Then, as you approach one of Axis's docking gates on the far side, you see them. Ships. Your team wastes no time slipping behind cover as you all begin scanning the area. There are multiple ships down there, damn it's like a whole fleet-! Wait.

Something isn't right.

"Big Sis…" Sicilia leans forward, squinting at the screen, "Someone blew those up."

She's right… there's a large Magellan here, with two Salamis, and a large number of old Columbus-class transport ships. But… only the Magellan and Salamis Cruisers are in Federation colors, all the Columbus-types are in generic civilian gray, and are extensively modified with Mega Particle Turrets, AA turrets, and visible launch catapults.

Plus, the Federation ships are clearly destroyed, gutted from what could only have been an attack from Mobile Suits. You'd put money that this was done by the group that owns those Columbus transports. You're also seeing more of those unmarked Jegans around here… although there's one big thing that really, really sticks out to you.

A line attaches to your Mobile Suit, launched from Eris, and you hear her voice over the link.

"If that is what I think it is… we might be in trouble." She groans, "I doubt we brought the firepower to take on that thing, whatever it is."

"Agreed." You grimace at the thought of having to fight that thing. No, not the Columbus refits, not the many, many unmarked Jegans…

You mean the giant Mobile Armor on standby just outside of one of the docking ports. It's big, it's blue, and there's no mistaking what it is. Just from a glance, you're able to identify two giant weapon containers on the top, two sub-arms on the bottom, a huge engine block in the rear, and a giant Mega Particle Cannon slung under the front.

"Where's the cockpit?" Theo asks, having joined in the call by joining hands with Eris, "I don't see one."

"Probably buried inside." You guess, "It also might be the type that needs to be docked to a Mobile Suit, but I wouldn't push my luck."

"We should head back and tell the Captain." Sicilia suggests, "Then we can get Commander Mackenzie and her team to help!"

Yeah, she's right, you don't want to assault this force without bringing everything you have to bear. Go in half-assed and the Bellerophon might be down a Mobile Suit Team, and you don't want to get everyone under your command killed.

"What? We're just going to leave?" Mort asks incredulously, having touched your Woundwort's shoulder, "But they don't even know we're here! We've got the drop on them! I bet if we unleash everything we've got right now, we can at least take that Mobile Armor out of the picture! It's worth a shot! We can pull back immediately after!"

"I'm the team leader, Mort," you counter firmly, "I don't want to risk everyone when we can go back and get Commander Mackenzie's team to back us up."

"Of course, Cybele, I'll follow your lead," he replies, "but I'm just saying, this is the perfect chance. What if we come back and that Mobile Armor is up and active? I like our chances at a fighting retreat now, but if we have to contend with an active Mobile Armor with escorts later, our odds won't look good."

"Mort…" you groan, shaking your head. He's making a good point, you really get it, but that's a big risk to take. Your mission was just reconnaissance! What will the Captain think of you if she sent you out on a simple scouting mission only to learn that you tried to take on the main enemy force all on your own? After all, she told Mackenzie's team to fall back when they encountered the enemy, doesn't the same hold true for you?

[] It's too risky. You're falling back to link up with Mackenzie's team.

[] You'll fall back. But only after making an alpha strike on that Mobile Armor. You won't… no, can't leave that thing operational.

[] Actually, do you really need Mackenzie's team? Launch an assault!

Author's Note: Updates will be more frequent and shorter during this arc.

Chapter 19: The First Newtype- Part 3
[X] It's too risky. You're falling back to link up with Mackenzie's team.

You admit, the thought occurs to you that you should try to take out that Mobile Armor. Hell, you even consider hijacking it, but there are too many unknowns, and you don't want to risk your team. Your mission was to determine the Federation forces on the far side of Axis, and you have accomplished that. It's time to link back up with Mackenzie's team and decide what to do.

It kind of occurs to you now that, because this group took out the Federation forces, that they might not be hostile, but then again, they are unaffiliated and unmarked, so clearly someone is trying to do things on the down low, which means that if you try and establish contact, you might end up being eliminated since you saw them here.

Besides, if they're black ops, nobody is going to be calling your boss to complain.

"Sorry Mort. We're falling back, everyone." You order the team, turning your Gundam around, "Stay alert. We don't want to run into another sentry on the way back. One missing guard will make them suspicious, but two are going to put them on high alert."

"Uh, I think they're already going to be on alert after they find the wreckage we left," Eris comments. She's right… but you don't say it.

The trip back is a bit tense, but no threat materializes. A part of you wish that it would have. You don't like waiting like this.

"Laser data link established with the Bellerophon." Eris reports as you finally reach the other side of Axis.

"Ensign Naese, what did you find?" Captain Nouri's image appears on the monitor, a little fuzzy but clear enough.

"Captain, we were able to confirm the presence of an armed force on the far side of Axis, consisting of four Columbus-class transports, each of which has been extensively modified into warships." You reply, realizing just how strange this all is now that you're repeating it, "They appear to have destroyed a Federation force of one Magellan, two Salamis, and an unknown number of Mobile Suits. The unknown group has deployed multiple Jegans to act as patrol and escort… and they have a large Mobile Armor, Captain."

"A Mobile Armor…" She frowns with concern, "Send us all the data you gathered on it."

Sicilia is already on it, and the footage you took is sent through the link. Sarina watches it, and her concern deepens.

"… Ensign Naese, we have no data on this Mobile Armor. You were right to avoid engaging with it, who knows what the outcome would have been?" She looks offscreen, then back at you, "We also have some new developments. The Zeon task force launched Mobile Suits to Axis about ten minutes ago. We tried contacting them, but the Minovsky interference was too strong. In addition, Alex Team missed their check-in window."

Alex Team. That's Mackenzie's team, although you're not sure where she got the name from. It's an odd choice.

"How long have they been out of contact?" You ask, worry mounting.

"Five minutes. Which isn't that long, but we have no way of knowing whether they're alright or not. They should have the interior schematics for Axis, but it's been through a lot. There's no telling what the inside is like."

Well, you can't take on that Mobile Armor and its escorts without her team, so…

"Understood." You nod, "Captain, permission for Cascadia Team to enter Axis and reestablish contact with Alex Team?"

"Granted." Captain Nouri answers instantly, "But be careful. I don't want to lose two teams today, let alone one."

"Understood." You cut the link and address your team, "Alright, everyone listen up, we're heading into Axis. Commander Mackenzie's team missed their check-in, which means things aren't going according to plan for them. Whatever the hold up, we'll help them fix it."

It doesn't take long to find an airlock meant for Mobile Suits, and luckily the manual override is functioning so you unlock it and enter. It's not the same entrance that Alex Team used, but that loading dock is a bit farther away, and judging from maps of Axis's interior, there should be some connecting passages. You'll save time this way.

The corridors are dark and foreboding, with minute pieces of debris floating around… and some shapes that might be bodies, but you don't look too closely.

You would take point if you could, but the Woundwart-Rah is kind of… wide.

You tried to fold the wing binders as close to the main body as possible, but it's tight in here. As a result, Eris and Theo are taking point while Mort watches the rear.

God forbid anyone try to fight in these tunnels though. There's no room to maneuver.

Eventually though, you finally enter one of the residential areas. The buildings are dark and abandoned, the streets cold and empty. You can almost see how this place was once lively and packed full of a thriving community…

You just can't understand it. Axis was truly independent from the Earth Sphere. Although the Federation had tried to wipe them out, they persevered. Then, just as they'd reached the point where Axis could truly be called something greater than a colony of refugees, they came charging back into the Earth Sphere and ruined it all.

You guess human souls really are weighed down by gravity.

"We got movement," Eris reported, causing everyone to stop and scan the area. In this dead and derelict asteroid, nothing should be moving, which can only mean…

Two heavily-modified GM IIIs round the corner, each carrying a Beam Gatling and sporting missile racks strapped to their legs and shoulders. They see you instantly.

"All units!" You order your team over the radio as you throttle up your thrusters and extend your wing binders, "Scatter!"

You boost straight up, a hail of beams carving through the area you just occupied. Theo and Eris are quick to find cover behind some buildings, while Mort just… unleashes.

He fires all of his missiles at the two GM IIIs. Definitely blind-fired, there's no way he got a lock in that small amount of time. Predictably, they hit just about everything except the enemy. They hit buildings, the ground, the ceiling, and one even starts to loop back around before Mort shoots it down himself with his Head Vulcans.

"Mort, what the hell was that?!" You scowl, aiming both of your Long Blade Rifles at the general position of the enemy and laying down covering fire so your team can reposition themselves.

"Sorry, Cybele!" Mort apologizes frantically, running behind cover just in time as his previous position is blown to hell by enemy missiles, "I meant to just fire one! I hit the wrong button!"

"Seriously?!" Eris curses him out as she uses her shoulder cannons to bombard the closest GM III's position, "Did you map your Salvo and Single Fire functions next to each other?!"

"Cut the chatter! Take these guys out first!" You activate the Beam Guns on the Hrududus, "I've got the rearmost one!"

You fire a hail of beams to pound the rear GM III. It raises its shield, and to your chagrin you see that it's treated with Anti-Beam coating. But that won't hold forever! With a scream you push the throttle forward and deploy your Heat Blades. They try to shoot you before you reach them, but your I-Field tanks the hit and you slam into them, spearing each arm into the ground with one Heat Blade each. You fire a burst from your Head Vulcans, disabling their own Vulcans, and then you stomp on the cockpit. Hard. Oil and fuel spew from the mangled armor plates as you grind your foot down. Switching each Composite Booster to Claw mode, you grab the GM III and throw it at its friend, who's turning to face you. Its dead friend collides with them, sending them reeling.

Then fire from Eris and Theo connects with it, setting off the unspent missiles.

The explosion is tremendous, causing ceiling panels to break apart and buildings to shatter. You fly into a nearby access tunnel before the fireball reaches you, only to see the entrance cave in behind you. Great.

"Sicilia, status?" You groan, firing your Long Blade Rifle at the cave-in… to little effect.

"No damage, we're good," she answers promptly, "… I can't raise the others. But they're still alive."

Your radio can't get through the rock, figures. You have no real way of telling if the others survived, but you trust Sicilia's Newtype senses.

Also, if your friends had died, you think you would have felt something. You're a Newtype too!

"…Well, I guess we have to head deeper in." You sigh in resignation, "The others will have to deal without us. If I were them, I'd head back for the entrance. Hopefully, they don't write us off."

With that, you fly deeper into Axis. You pray that Alex Team has another route out, because this one is a no-go.

You travel for a bit longer in silence. You don't encounter any more of those unaffiliated Mobile Suits, or really anybody at all. There's nobody. About ten minutes into the search, just when you think you're lost, you exit into a main passage, wide and tall enough that it was probably used to transport large cargo and other resources. There are some fresh thruster burns on the floor. Probably Alex Team.

"Are we sure it's them?" Sicilia asks.

You shrug, "It's heading deeper into Axis, according to these maps. The other way leads to a loading dock, on our side of Axis, so I think it's them. Would make sense."

You follow the direction of the burns for another minute, then as you round the corner you see it. Another of those unmarked Jegans, facing away from you towards a large airlock. At ground level, two Petit-Mobiles are doing something to a maintenance panel for the airlock. Without ceremony, you rush the Jegan and impale it through the back with your Heat Blade, simultaneously shredding the Petit-Mobiles with your Vulcans. Poor situational awareness kills!

You look around, shining your Woundwort's lights on the floor and walls. You can't find any sign of where Alex Team went from here. There's another corridor that the mystery forces came from, maybe Alex Team went down there? Or maybe they went into the airlock? But it's locked… wait…

"There's no way…" You mutter, touching the door. Instantly, your Gundam links up with the door's systems, asking for authorization.

This airlock has power. Does that mean the other side is pressurized? Is someone living here?!

"… Too bad we can't get the door open." You sigh, about to move on when Sicilia speaks up.

"Voice Authorization-Ple 42-Newtype Corps… open please?"

The door's systems work for a second, before chiming cheerfully and grinding open, revealing an airlock ready and waiting. Yes, the other side is indeed pressurized.

"…So you think they went this way, Sicilia?" You ask your little sis. You would ask how she got that door open, but you guess Neo Zeon must have given her some level of clearance before they put her on ice, and then just never revoked it.

"I dunno, Big Sis, but there's something back there." She replies, oddly fixated on the airlock, "It's a funny feeling… don't you feel it too?"

You almost say that you don't, but now that you think about it, you do feel a sort of… pressure. The same kind of pressure you felt when you faced down that Blue Hound.

Well… it's the same kind of pressure, but it doesn't feel the same, if that makes any sense.

Are you sensing another Newtype?

[] Travel through the airlock and attempt to locate the source of the pressure.

[] Continue down the corridor. That door was locked, there's no way Alex Team went that way, and you have a mission to complete.

Chapter 20: The First Newtype-Part 4
[X] Travel through the airlock and attempt to locate the source of the pressure.

You have a mission, to locate Alex Team and bring them back into communication with the Bellerophon.

But… something is telling you that this is more important.

"Alright Little Sis… we're going in." You carefully step into the airlock and activate it. The doors shut behind you and air begins to cycle into the chamber. It isn't long before your MS reports that the air is now breathable, and pressure is equivalent to sea level.

The inner doors groan open, and beyond it is a large, cavernous area filled with nondescript industrial buildings… this must be a production facility of some sort. Most everywhere looks dead and abandoned like the rest of Axis, but a few blocks into the district you can see it. There's a single large building with large sliding doors big enough for a Mobile Suit, and high windows all along the sides. Light spills out from them onto the surrounding streets. So there really is someone living here.

"…Okay, let's go in quietly." You whisper to Sicilia, using your thrusters to gently push the Woundwort into the air, then towards the building. As you get close, you carefully come to a halt, creating as little noise as possible.

Well, it's still loud, but no louder than the sound of that airlock opening, anyways.

There's no doubt about it, the Pressure is strongest here. You could just slice open the building, but what if they're not hostile? You don't like it, but you have to check this out for yourself.

You switch control over to Sicilia's seat before getting out of your own and retrieving a sidearm from the emergency supply compartment.

"Keep an ear and eye out, okay?" You chamber a round and open the cockpit door, "If I get into trouble, I'll be counting on you."

She nods, "Alright, Big Sis. Be careful."

Swinging around the outside of the head, you push off and drift down to street level. As your boots lock onto the ground, you can't help but look around at the surroundings buildings and marvel at them. This place must have churned out materials for Axis once upon a time. Was it for war? Commercial? Well, enough of these buildings have Mobile-Suit sized doors, so you guess it was probably used for MS development or production. Probably development, since the layout would not be conducive to an effective assembly line.

That aside, you quickly locate an entrance, a door with a glass window peering inside. The glass is old and frosted, but you can see light through it… Okay, now or never.

You quietly turn the handle and push the door open, stepping through. You have to be alert, who knows what could be-whoa.

What… is that? It's huge! A big red Mobile Suit! It's covered in patchwork repairs, and the right leg is clearly a transplant from a Geara Doga (it's still green, even), but it must have been imposing and magnificent when it was new. As your gaze travels up it, you're struck with a sense of familiarity. Wait, haven't you seen this MS before? Then, as you see the head, it strikes you. Everyone who's seen footage from the Axis Shock knows this Mobile Suit.

This is… The Sazabi.

It's… amazing.

Then you hear someone step out of the shadows behind you. The sound of a pistol being cocked. Shit.

"Don't move." The stranger speaks, their voice muffled by what might be a helmet, "Drop the gun."

"…Fuck." You curse under your breath, tossing the pistol away. You should have been paying attention, instead you got preoccupied with the museum piece and let this guy get the drop on you! Where were your Newtype senses when you needed them? Apparently, they play second fiddle to your appreciation of vintage hardware!

There's no mistaking it though, this guy is the source of the Pressure you've been feeling. And now he has you at gunpoint. Joy of joys.

"I know you people have a grudge against me," he says, sounding somewhat bemused, "but I didn't expect one of you to find me before a recovery team."

Wait, "you people"?

"…Who exactly are my 'people'?" You ask, hoping to god that this guy isn't a Neo Zeon hermit that's been living here for years alone, and you're about to get shot for wearing a Londo Bell uniform.

"Playing dumb? You can't fool me, I know a Titans Mobile Suit when I see one." He scoffs.

Wait, Titans? Well, yeah, it's a Titans MS, but you're not with the Titan Remnants! Why would he think that when you're wearing a Londo Bell Normal Sui-!

You're wearing your dad's jacket over it, covering any insignia from all angles aside from the front. Right. Oops.

"Look, Zeon hermit guy or whatever," you start talking, trying your best to sound confident and not the kinda scared teenager that you are, "I'm not with the Titan Remnants. I just use an old Titans MS. It's secondhand. I swear I got nothing against you, I was just trying to see why the lights were on in this building."

Yeah, not like you were trying to track the presence of a Newtype. You are not sure how he'd react to that, but you don't think it'd be a pleasant reaction.

"…Zeon hermit?" He repeats, baffled, "Wait… turn around."

You slowly turn on the spot, making sure you don't spook the guy. He's standing in the shadows, but you can tell he's wearing a dirty Normal Suit, and carrying a regular service pistol like the one you had. He seems surprised once he gets a good look at you.

"…You're just a kid." He lowers his gun, and then notices your uniform, "Oh… I'm sorry. From behind I didn't see…"

At the same time, you feel the Pressure lighten up. Guess this guy was on alert the whole time, and knew that those other guys were trying to come through the door. He seems confused, but you just sigh in relief at not being held at gunpoint anymore. You pop your helmet and hold it under your left arm, offering your right hand.

"Ensign Cybele Naese, I'm with Londo Bell." You introduce yourself, "Who're you?"

Please be friendly, please be friendly, please be friendly…

Outside- A Few Seconds Ago

You deactivate the Heat Blade and lower it from where you were about to cleave the building in half. Big Sis is okay, you can feel it. She isn't in danger anymore.

You land the Woundwort and get ready to disembark. You wanna meet this person who makes you feel tingly and nice, kind of like how Big Sis makes you feel!

Inside- Now

The stranger steps into the light, and you notice more details about his Normal Suit. It's a white and blue Londo Bell one, but older in style. Looks almost new though… well, looks like it was new, then got roughed up for a week or so. There's a distinctive red line down the right side of the chest. It looks familiar, where have you seen it before?

He holsters his gun and pops his own helmet, revealing a head of reddish-brown hair and a face that you could never forget (it's plastered all over the merch you just bought, and lovingly recreated on the dakimura). No longer muffled by his helmet, his voice is iconic and instantly recognizable.

"Captain Amuro Ray. Sorry about earlier." He smiles sheepishly, "I'm a bit jumpy today. Anyways, Ensign, did Bright send you? Odd choice, but I'm not going to complain. I was afraid I was going to have to fly this junk pile out of here."

He gestures to the Sazabi, which you realize he's been repairing. You try to say something witty.

"Bwuh."

You just… You can't even-! Amuro Ray?! The Hero, the Legend, the guy who's supposedly dead?! He's just been living like a hobo in Axis all these years, waiting for Bright to pick him up?!

"I know, not my best work," Amuro winces, apparently taking your speechlessness as a reaction to the Sazabi, "but I really did a number on it during the fight. Patching the Nu's cockpit into it was a nightmare, not to mention attaching that leg. Want to see it?"

"I, uh, sure." You stammer, trying to understand just how he's been here for years with nobody noticing. Didn't Londo Bell and the Federation do a sweep of Axis after the battle? How did they miss Amuro Fucking Ray and his giant Sazabi kitbash?!

As he leads you up towards the head, you notice cabling connecting the MS to some sort of large machine near the wall, which is in turn plugged into the building itself. If you had to take a guess, Amuro is powering this entire district with the Sazabi. Well, the airlocks and this building in particular.

"Thankfully, Anaheim is very good at making their hardware compatible," he explains, stepping into the cockpit, "The physical connections are where I had some trouble. Otherwise, this thing is almost ready to go. I'm just trying to fix one last issue I found yesterday. I must have damaged the Sazabi so badly that the Chronometer got thrown off. The Suit's OS says that the Chronometer itself isn't damaged, but if it's wrong about that, who knows what else it's wrong about? So I'm running one last full diagnostic on the Suit manually."

"How do you know it's broken?" You ask, a bit intrigued at this mashup of a Mobile Suit.

"It doesn't match the backup Chronometer in my cockpit," Amuro answers, fiddling with a panel on the back of his Linear Seat, "It's off on the magnitude of five years. Minutes and hours match up well enough, but five years? That's more than a small deviation."

….

Wait. Something isn't adding up. A lot of somethings aren't adding up.

"…Captain Amuro," you look him in the eye, "What year do you think it is?"

He gives you a miffed look, "U.C. 0093, of course. Why? I know I've been here a while, but it hasn't been that long. A week at most."

He goes back to his work, adding, "I can't believe it took a week to find me. Did we really lose that many people during the battle?"

…. A week. Amuro Ray thinks that he's been missing for a week.

"Big Sis!" Sicilia chirps, her head popping into view from the side of the cockpit hatch, "I parked the Gundam! Who's that guy?"

He looks at Sicilia, blinks a couple of times, then waves to her, "Hi. I'm Amuro."

"Hi Amuro." Sicilia smiles cheerfully, climbing into the cockpit along with the two of you.

He notices her uniform, then shakes his head in exasperation.

"I leave for a week, and Bright starts recruiting kids again. I swear…"

Closing the panel, he looks back to you, "Well, Ensign, looks like you're my ride out of here. I was worried when I noticed that someone was trying to force the doors earlier, but I guess that was just you, hm?"

Providing a taxi ride for Amuro Ray? Sure…

Wait, wait, are you just going to ignore that he thinks he's only been gone a week? It's been five years! Yeah, his Normal Suit only looks like it's been through about a week or so of wear, and his facial hair is only like a week-old bad, not five years bad, but that just makes things more confusing! Also, he was going to fly the Sazabi out of here? Wasn't the Sazabi abandoned on the surface of Axis or something? How'd he get it in here?! And he didn't even have his own Gundam, just his own cockpit from the Nu, which was probably adrift in the first place! You just have so many questions! None of this makes any sense!

But does Amuro have the answers you're looking for? Or are your questions just going to confuse him too? He seems to be pretty convinced that he's only been gone a week, so does he even know what happened? You don't think so! The only thing that occurs to you is fucking Time Travel, but that's entirely nonsense!... Right?

At any rate, the Sazabi is probably fine. The Chronometer is working. If anything, it's the one in his cockpit that's busted. He can fly himself out of here. And honestly you kind of want some backup, given that you got separated from the rest of your team.

Maybe… Maybe don't address the time difference, and just give him the cliff notes as to the situation? It might confuse him a bit, but less so than "You Time Travelled".

Alternatively, just let him believe what he wants, although it would be harder to convince him to take the Sazabi in that case.

"Your memorial was nice!" Sicilia comments to Amuro, causing him to frown and mumble to himself.

"Oi, Bright, don't write me off so quickly…"

[][Amuro] Don't challenge his assumptions. You are now his chauffeur.

[][Amuro] Explain your mission. Ask for his assistance. Leave out anything related to the time difference.

[][Amuro] Tell him the year. Show him proof. Find out what he knows, and what he doesn't know. Then ask for his help to finish your mission.

Chapter 21: The First Newtype-Part 5
[X][Amuro] Explain your mission. Ask for his assistance. Leave out anything related to the time difference.

… Yeah, you have absolutely no idea how to properly inform Amuro that he's missing out on five years of history without sounding like a lunatic. Hell, you're having a hard time believing it, even when the proof is right in front of you!

Well, despite all of this you still have a mission to finish. You have Alex Team to find, and your own teammates to rejoin. If you're toting Amuro around, you might have a problem with that, so he should fly himself. Plus, having the Sazabi tag along with help if you run into any enemies.

So… how to convince him to follow, while explaining your mission, without telling him about the whole time-displacement fiasco? Carefully, you guess.

"Er, Captain Ray-" You start to speak, but he stops you.

"Please, Amuro is fine." He smiles gently, "I can tell you're new to all of this. I'm not going to hold you to protocol."

Oh. Alright then.

"Amuro, then. Uh, I'm not actually here to search for you. I'm here on another mission."

"Oh?" Amuro pauses, a bit taken aback, "I see… Is Bright even looking for me at all?"

"I wouldn't know," you deflect the question, "I'm just a new recruit, after all."

"A new recruit piloting a Gundam…" He mutters, shrugging, "Well, it's not like there isn't precedent. Anyways, go on."

"My ship came here with two Mobile Suit teams. We were investigating reports of…" Ah, wait, the Federation were friendlies in his time, right? How to spin this…

"…reports of illegal salvage operations going on in Axis airspace." Technically a lie, but that unknown group is definitely looking for something here, "I led my team to scout out their forces, while the other team entered Axis. My team confirmed the enemy positions and numbers, but when we returned to our ship, we discovered that the other team missed their check-in."

He nods knowingly, "I see. So your team went in to look for the others… and did you say you lead your own team? I take it your teammates are kids like you, probably your friends?"

"Uh, yeah," you blink owlishly, "how'd you know that?"

He chuckles with an amused grin, "Nothing, nothing. Just feeling nostalgic. Please continue."

Oh, right, he was just a kid when he first piloted the Gundam too, right? You suppose the other pilots on White Base were his friends from his colony. Come to think of it, wasn't Judy… Judau, right, Judau, wasn't he a kid too? The "Gundam Team" was comprised of his friends as well.

You're seeing a pattern here.

Although you guess Ka… Ka.. Kammy? Kamille? Yeah, Kamille, he'd be the odd one out, since you think you remember that most of the pilots he flew with were actual adults.

"So, we encountered the scavengers." You continue your explanation, "They were piloting stolen GM IIIs. The resulting fight separated me from my team. I tried to get my bearings, then came upon scavengers trying to get through the airlock into here. I took them out, then… well, here I am."

He nods, "Good thing you came along when you did. If you were able to get through that door, that meant those scavengers had just cracked the lock."

Actually, you had someone with authorization… but you're not going to complicate things by explaining that Sicilia is a Neo Zeon Cyber Newtype. So, you let his assumption go unchallenged.

"Sorry, Amuro, but as much as I'd love to give you a ride, I need to find my team, then find the other team. I'm pretty sure I'm going to run into more scavengers too… So, sir, if you could accompany me in this Sazabi, things might actually go smoother for the both of us."

He seems to consider it, but frowns slightly. He must be thinking about those system diagnostics that he thinks is bugged.

"Look, I'll help you check the vital systems, then we'll go." You offer, "Things will go faster if there's two of us, right?"

"I don't like doing a half-baked job… but alright." He agrees, "Let's get to work. The sooner we finish, the sooner I can help you find your team."

Yes! One Amuro Ray acquired as a temporary team member!

"So," Amuro's voice comes across slightly staticky due to the state of his MS, "These scavengers, what kind of Mobile Suits are they using aside from GM IIIs? Those alone must have been hard to get ahold of."

"They have modified Jegans, GM IIs, and they have one Mobile Armor." You send him the images you took during your earlier reconnaissance.

He goes silent for almost a minute.

"…A Mobile Armor?" He asks, entirely incredulous, "Who are these people?"

"Hell if I know," You shrug as you trigger the airlock, the door sealing behind your Woundwort and his Sazabi, "but they fired at my team on sight, so they are not friends of the Federation or Londo Bell."

Technically true! Although you don't mention that Londo Bell and the Federation aren't best of buds anymore.

"Oh, by the way, what weapons does that Sazabi have?" You look at his patchwork Mobile Suit, noting all the jury-rigged fixes and the empty Funnel rack.

"The Mega Particle Cannon on the waist still works, but otherwise everything else is spent or broken." He answers with no small amount of regret, "I tried to find something more substantial, but the district I was holed up in seems to have been dedicated to the development of Psychoframe-related technologies, so there wasn't much in the way of weapons."

Psychoframe, huh? You mark the area on your map. Londo Bell should sent a recovery team here later. Better your side has the stuff than anybody else.

The two of you must look like an odd sight as you leave the airlock. A Titans MS painted in dark colors being followed by a half-destroyed bright red Sazabi.

You really hope that nobody shoots Amuro on sight.

As you head through empty passageways, you brief him on the Mobile Suits of your team and Alex team, since his MS isn't going to automatically tag them as friendlies, and the last thing you need is the White Meteor accidentally killing one of your friends.

"Bright couldn't give you a more cohesive lineup?" He asks with exasperation as he looks at your team's makeup, "And what's with the one your friend Theo is piloting? I've never seen this type before."

"Oh, they're not Londo Bell Suits. They're ours." You quickly offer him an explanation, although it feels like a blatant deflection to you, and there's no doubt that Amuro is picking up on it too.

"Oh? Owning Mobile Suits when you're so young… you'll have to tell me the story behind that when we're done here."

You sigh in relief. Good, he's accepted that for now.

Pushing open some dead blast doors, you float into a large storage area, with containers piled high. In the center, some of the containers have been rearranged into a makeshift perimeter. There are tents, wrecked vehicles, and smashed Mobile Suits strewn all over it. Unlike the MS from the unknown group, these ones are marked.

"…Federation forces," Amuro remarks, moving forward to survey the area, "They've been torn to bits! No less than six Jegans, with supporting Petits."

He stares particularly hard at some of the bodies, "This was recent… probably within the last couple days or so. Did Neo Zeon do this?"

You stare indifferently at the carnage. You can't particularly say that you mourn these people. The Federation did far worse to your home. They deserve this.

You do wonder what they were doing here, but the answer is likely the same as that strange group. Salvage. Axis has a lot of tech that hasn't been stripped yet. The reason it's been mostly untouched all these years is the general consensus of "Axis is Haunted". Not literally, of course, just a general sentiment. Whatever, these corpses aren't your problem.

"Come on, we should get moving, there's nothing here that concerns us." You move towards one of the room's exits.

"Hold it." Amuro speaks, but his tone brooks no argument. Immediately that Pressure from earlier is back, easily twice as strong. Sicilia feels it too, and you hear her whimper.

Turning, you face your Woundwort towards his Sazabi, and you can tell, he's ready to fight.

"Miss Naese, I believe you owe me some answers." He says grimly.

"…I don't know what you mean." You try to deflect again, but your nervousness creeps into your voice, "I've told you the truth so far, Amuro."

"That's Captain Ray to you, Ensign." He replies firmly, "That is, if you're even with Londo Bell."

"I am." You answer, perhaps a bit too quickly, "I… You're going to have to be more specific. What's wrong, Captain?"

"When we saw this," he gestures to the carnage, "I would have expected concern, pity, sadness, those kinds of emotions… but that's not what I sensed from you, Ensign. Do you know what I felt?"

You don't reply, because you're sure he's going to be right.

"Disgust. Contempt." He continues, "These people weren't your allies… you didn't consider them to be, anyways. You show up under strange circumstances, piloting an unusual Mobile Suit, with a team so mismatched it almost beggars belief. One of you is flying a Mobile Suit that I've never seen before, and believe me Ensign, there is no modern MS that I have not at least heard of. There are way too many strange, unexplainable things going on, and I think you have the answers I'm looking for."

It's… It's almost hard to breathe. Your vision is narrowing, your hands gripping the controls. Are… Are you going to have to fight Amuro Ray? No, no no nononono

"Well? Ensign? Was my first impression of you wrong? Or were you just pretending to be a good person?"

Your throat feels dry. You try to swallow. It's like… It's like staring down the barrel of a gun. Deflect, right, you can't talk about this right now, he wouldn't believe you!

"T-This isn't a good time to talk about this, Captain, er, besides, you're not saying you'll attack me if I don't answer, right?" You try to laugh. It comes out weak, "I mean, Sicilia is in the cockpit with me. You wouldn't attack a child, right?"

He doesn't answer. The Pressure doesn't let up.

You stare each other down.

"I… I'm not your enemy, Captain." You force the words out even as you prepare to arm the Composite Shield Booster, "You don't want to do this."

"You're right." He says, "I don't want to. But if you continue to lie to me-"

Then there's something, almost like a roar in your mind, fast approaching from the left, beyond the wall. Your eyes snap to that direction, and you feel Amuro react similarly. Simultaneously, the two of you jump away from as metal and concrete caves in with a spectacular explosion.

Crashing through are two Mobile Suits. A red Bawoo, familiar and striking, pushing an unfamiliar Gundam through the wall. Locked saber to saber, both combatants give off killing intent, directed at each other. You look back at Amuro, and an understanding passes between the two of you. You'll finish this later.

You're dreading later.

The Bawoo Pilot is startled to see the two of you, although you think they're more shocked at the Sazabi, and that gives the Gundam an opening. It grabs a hold of the Bawoo and rolls backwards, kicking it into the roof.

"Neo Zeon?" Amuro asks as he tries to figure out who to aim his sole weapon at.

"Zeon Republic!" You level your Long Blade Rifles at the Gundam, "Unknown Gundam-type, this is Ensign Cybele Naese with Londo Bell! State your affiliation!"

It doesn't answer, just turning to face you. There's killing intent, sharp, and without delay it rushes you.

You fire both rifles, but it blocks with its shield. Damn, the thing has anti-beam coating! Then, as it's mere meters from you, Amuro grabs the head from behind and slams it into the ground.

That's the White Meteor for you! You're so glad you're not fighting him right now.

"Stand down," Amuro orders, "This is your final warning."

Through the opening made by the Bawoo and Gundam, another MS rushes in. One of those modified Jegans, holding a strange rifle that doubles as a beam lance!

"Amuro, look out!" You position the Woundwort in the way, and cross your Heat Blades to catch the lance and force it into the ground. The Jegan grounds to a halt, and the two of you are face to face.

The Gundam under Amuro flares its thrusters at full power, slamming him into the ceiling. It quickly changes direction and tackles you. Your Woundwort shakes from the impact, and the Jegan breaks free. Together, the two of them try to flee back where they came.

"Oh no you don't!" Sicilia shouts, taking control of the right Composite Shield Booster and launching it at the fleeing pair. The Gundam shoves the Jegan in front of it, sacrificing its comrade. The Shield Booster switches to Claw mode and latches onto its torso.

With a battle cry, Sicilia pulls at the controls and the Woundwort yanks, swinging the Jegan up and dragging it across the ceiling before slamming it down into the ground on the other side of you. Then before letting go, she fires the Beam Gun, finishing off the pilot.

Whoa. That was cool. She gives you a thumbs up, looking giddy. You return the gesture. She's scary sometimes.

"…Brother?" a familiar voice comes over the radio, "No, it isn't… It can't be… Amuro?"

Onscreen, two video feeds pop up. Artesia Deikun in the Bawoo, and Amuro Ray in the Sazabi. Both seem stunned to see the other.

"Sayla?" Amuro gapes, "Why are you in a Zeon… what are you wearing? You look like…"

She cringes, "Don't say it. Please."

Wait, wait, this is a chance!

"Ah, Captain, I know that you don't trust me, but you can trust her, right?" You look to Artesia, "Miss Deikun, please, can you tell Amuro that I'm not an enemy? I'm not trying to lie to him, it's just things are… complicated."

She still seems rather shocked, but nods, "Ah, yes, complicated. I… I think I see what you mean. I'm not sure what's going on, Amuro, but she's an ally. That said… I have a lot of questions."

"That makes two of us," Amuro shakes his head in frustration, "Who were you fighting? That was a Gundam, wasn't it? I don't recognize the model."

"I don't recognize it either," Artesia replies as he helps her Bawoo down from the ceiling, "but it belongs to a private military group called Birnam. We think they're trying to steal Psychoframe from the ruins of Axis."

"…What happened in the week I was gone?" He asks, completely and helplessly confused.

Artesia looks at him with astonishment, "A… A week? It hasn't been-!... I think you two better come with me back to my ship. It isn't safe to talk here."

He nods, but you interject, "Wait, but what about my team? What about finding Alex Team? Captain, we can't just leave them here!"

"Don't worry," Artesia reassures you, "I can let my teams know to look out for any Londo Bell units. I'll have them directed to my ship to join us."

"That's…" you trail off, mulling over her offer. It's a good one, but you'd rather find your team by yourself.

That being said, you're not sure you should miss out on the talk Artesia is going to have with Amuro. It might be the only chance to redeem your reputation in his eyes. You don't feel right leaving things like this.

[] Insist on continuing to search for your team and Alex team. However, you'll be doing it without Amuro's help. Some backup from Artesia's forces would be appreciated, though.

[] Accept Artesia's offer and accompany her back to her ship. It seems like the Republic of Zeon knows more about what's going on here than Londo Bell anyways, so this is an opportunity.

Chapter 22: The First Newtype-Part 6
[X] Insist on continuing to search for your team and Alex team. However, you'll be doing it without Amuro's help. Some backup from Artesia's forces would be appreciated, though.

"I… Artesia, ma'am, thank you for the offer, but I need to continue looking for my friends." You look at Sicilia, who nods back. "I'm their leader, and my Captain entrusted me with a mission. I'm continuing on."

"Hold on," Amuro cuts in, clearly worried, "You can't go in alone! It's far too dangerous, I can-"

"Captain Ray, I appreciate what you're trying to do, but it's more important that someone you trust brings you up to speed." You counter, "After that's done, feel free to help, preferably with more weapons than just the waist beam cannon. Sir."

"Amuro, she'll be fine." Artesia reassured her friend, before addressing you, "Most of my forces will be withdrawing, but I'll leave you with one of my personal guards. She should be more than enough."

She heads back through the opening she made, leaving you and Amuro little choice but to follow her. The path of destruction goes through a couple of hallways and what appears to be an old restaurant, before exiting into what must have once been a gorgeous arboretum. Not anymore, as the screens that used to make up the fake sky are all dark and dangling, and all the plants are shriveled and pale, dead from exposure to hard vacuum.

Also, it looks like there was a Mobile Suit battle in here, so the ground is ravaged, and there are scorch marks all over the walls.

"Lady Deikun!" A new face pops up on your monitors as a golden Qubeley approaches the three of you, "I attempted to apprehend the Gundam, but they escaped! I apologize deeply for my failure."

The young woman has the same purple eyes and pale red hair as your Little Sis… in fact, she looks like a grown-up version of her.

"Don't worry, Camilla." Artesia talks to her guard, presumably, and you see Amuro mouth, "Lady Deikun?"

"Ma'am," An older man appears, apparently piloting a customized light green Zaku III, "Arlette and I searched everywhere, but we can't find the-"

He looks at Amuro and freezes on the spot.

"-Sazabi?!"

Artesia smiles a bit at that reaction, "Yes, Danton, we've located our objective, and a bit more. We're returning to the ship. Except for you, Camilla, please provide escort for our friend from Londo Bell here. She is attempting to rejoin her allies who are deeper in Axis."

Camilla nods obediently, "Of course, my Lady. Danton, I entrust the safety of Lady Deikun to you. Should harm befall her, I shall personally murder you."

"Haha, I didn't think you had a sense of humor, Camilla!" Danton chuckles, but trails off when she doesn't change her serious expression, "That… That was a joke, right? You're joking, of course. Right?"

She doesn't bother to answer him. Rather, she's rather focused on you now.

Sicilia leans forward in her seat, fixated on this Camilla woman. The two stare at each other for a while, long enough for Artesia to leave with the others. It's just you and this golden Qubeley now.

"I felt you before," Camilla finally speaks, addressing Sicilia, "back at Von Braun. You're… so young."

Little Sis nods, "I was asleep for a long time! Big Sis here woke me up!"

The older one looks to you, nodding, "You are her Master?"

What? Master? You, uh, you just nod, you guess.

"Take care of her." She looks past you, "I shall follow you. Don't worry, you're safe with me."

You really need to figure out what's going on with Sicilia and her sisters. Although you doubt that anything that has to do with mass production clones of a Cyber Newtype is simple.

Axis-Shipyard Five-Ten Minutes Later

Eris grips at her controls, swearing under her breath as she fires again at the enemy Jegan. But the damn thing has some kind of large, bulky backpack hooked up to an emitter of some sort on its left arm where the shield would go, and it erects a sort of… she doesn't know how else to describe it, a shield of sort made out of beams!

"Theo!" She ducks back behind the wreckage of a Komusai as the multiple enemy units rain fire down on her position from the derelict Gwazine at the other side of the shipyard, "I need fire on that weird Jegan!"

"I'm trying!" He shouts, his shoulder beam cannons firing downrange at the same Jegan as it steadily approaches their position, shield raised, "I can't get through that barrier!"

Mort tries firing at it, to similar effect, "Ditto, what the hell is that?"

Theo has to do a double take when he sees another similar-looking Jegan drop down from the Gwazine to follow its friend, "Uh, guys, don't look now but I think there's two of them."

"Damn it!" Eris looks around for anything she could use, and her eyes land on an old fuel truck. Maybe it still has propellant in it?

Without hesitation she picks it up and hurls it at the forward-most Jegan, which raises its shield to block.

The explosion is tremendous, but once the flames die she can still see the telltale glow of that beam shield… which flickers… then dies.

The Jegan emerges from the smoke, that emitter on the arm mangled and torn, along with a portion of the arm itself.

"Heh, I'm all for field tests," She smirks, popping up out from behind cover and leveling every beam weapon she has at it, "but you picked the wrong test targets!"

Shoulder Beam Cannons, Beam Rifle, and Thigh Beam Cannons all roar, the veritable wall of fire virtually deleting the Jegan on the spot, save for a bit around the reactor. It collapses in a heap of slag, barely recognizable.

"Overkill much?" Theo asks as he changes targets to the second Shield Jegan, which has begun to retreat back behind friendlies.

"If it works, it works," Eris shrugs, "I don't have a second fuel truck though. How about for that second one, we-"

She doesn't get to finish, as at that instant a small golden Funnel zips down from the ceiling and attacks the Jegan from the front. It raises the shield to defend, and it works… and they don't notice the three other Funnels that take up position behind it. The Funnels fire again, and the Jegan falls, melted clean through from the back.

"Hey guys!" A familiar voice laughs over their comms, "Miss me?!"

Eight enemy Mobile Suits, two Jegans, three GM IIIs, two cobbled-together Guncannons, and one GM Custom.

Easy enough.

You scream down from the upper level, smashing into the top of the Gwazine in the middle of the enemy formation. You spear one of the Guncannons from behind with your Heat Blade, while Sicilia seizes a GM III with the Claw. She shoots the Beam Gun, then hurls it into one of the Jegans. The survivors scatter, taking fire from your team, but the GM Custom faces you down.

"What is this guy doing?" You mutter as it steps forward, tossing aside its Beam Rifle and Shield, before drawing both of its Beam Sabers. Are they an idiot? Shouldn't you just shoot him and be done with it? What point is there in obliging a Saber duel?

It'll be fun, that's what.

"Stay back, everyone," You tell the others as you convert both Composite Shield Boosters into Heat Blade mode, "This one is mine."

Around the two of you the battle rages, Camilla's Qubeley using her Funnels to herd the Birnam Pilots towards your team who absolutely decimate them now that their formation is broken. But your world narrows down to you and this GM Custom.

"Um, Big Sis?" Sicilia pipes up, "Can't we just shoot him?"

You shush her gently, "That'd be rude. Let Big Sis take care of him."

The GM Custom's eye flashes, and an audio feed plays, "Thank you for accepting my challenge. There aren't many with honor these days."

The man sounds old, likely a OYW veteran if he's opting to fly a GM Custom. You just laugh at his praise.

"I don't know what you mean by honor, old man! I just think this'll be fun!"

He doesn't reply to that. That's fine. This exchange isn't about words, after all.

Both of you boost forward at the same time, locking blade to blade. Beam grates against Heat Blade, and the blows rebound. You both put a little distance between each other, then clash again. You went for his cockpit, but he parried. He went for your chest, you parried.

You've trained in melee combat before in the sims, but this… this is unlike anything you've ever done in the sims outside of shits and giggles (like the A Baou Qu sim you ran with the parameter set to melee-only). And it's different. When he slashes and thrusts, it's like you can tell what direction it's coming from! You're one step ahead of him, but he's skilled, deflecting your slashes just as well! You've got this Newtype intuition thing going for you, but he's just a seasoned veteran!

Strangely, you find this kind of combat fun. Not like the rip and tear kind of glee you get when you brutalize the opponent with your Heat Blades, but it's like a contest of skill. Killing you is just a secondary goal for him, you get the sense, his real aim is to prove his superiority at melee combat! How he's survived so long, you don't know, but apparently fate favors this guy.

Also, as a soldier of fortune he must have a good reputation. You doubt he'd be able to find a job otherwise, with such an old MS. He must have customized the hell out of it to match the performance of the Woundwort… kind of.

Truth be told, your Heat Blades are just really damn big. Every move you make is telegraphed in the dozens of meters.

He jumps back, dropping into some weird stance that he obviously programmed into his MS. Looks like it's straight out of a martial arts movie.

"Behold," he speaks, "the ultimate technique I honed through countless battles during the One Year War! HEAVENLY BEA-!"

A single Beam Rifle shot cores his cockpit from the side. It just stands there in that stupid pose for a second, then collapses like an abandoned puppet.

… Lame.

Off to the side, at one of the many entrances to the Shipyard, Christina's Rick Dijeh lowers its weapon as her team files in behind her.

"Oh," She looks at you, "Sorry, it's just, he was open."

"No need to apologize," Eris chuckles, coming over from where she finished off the last Birnam MS, "Any longer and I think Cybele was going to start shouting attack names too."

Theo stares at the fallen GM Custom, muttering in disbelief, "What kind of bizarre behavior was that?"

Mort makes his MS shrug, "You find all sorts in paramilitary. Anyways, I guess we found Alex Team."

"Yeah, where were you guys?" Eris asks, a bit exasperated. It's a feeling you share.

Christina goes silent for a few seconds, before reluctantly answering, "We… got lost."

"Oh, but hey!" She quickly changes topics, looking to the Qubeley, "Who's your friend?"

Camilla pops up on screen again, "I am Camilla of the Republic of Zeon's Royal Guard. Pleased to meet you."

She turns to you, "Now that you have found your allies, my mission is complete. I will return to my ship."

"Bye Bye!" Sicilia waves, making Camilla nod before she cuts the line and heads down towards the hangar doors at the far end of the Shipyard.

"… Okay, Commander Mackenzie, the Captain asked us to find you." You look back to your fellow team leader, "We've finished scouting out the enemy forces. They possess a Mobile Armor, but it wasn't active the last time we saw it. We want to take it out, preferably with your help."

"Wait," Eris cuts in, "Weren't we supposed to report back in with the Bellerophon before we did anything else?"

"Yes," you admit, "but while we didn't leave any survivors here, a Gundam belonging to this group, they're a paramilitary organization called Birnam, by the way, got in a fight with me and a few others. It managed to get away, and no doubt told the others that we're here. I don't think we have much time before that Mobile Armor is up and running, and even with all of us I don't want to fight that thing while it's active."

You send Christina and her team the photos you took, and you hear a sharp intake of breath from her.

"Do you know about that Mobile Armor?" You ask her. If she does, maybe she knows what it's capable of!

"…Maybe," she answers cryptically, "Everyone, come here. Contact links only."

Weird, but okay. Everyone links hands and switches to secure local communication. Only you all will hear what's about to be said.

"Okay, so what I tell you doesn't leave this mission, although it's fine to tell the Captain so long as we tell her not to tell anyone who doesn't need to know." Christina begins, "I'm under an NDA. If they get wind I told anyone about this, Anaheim is going to sue my ass all the way to Jupiter."

Everyone nods. Sounds a bit dramatic, but you wouldn't wish Anaheim Electronic's Legal Team on anyone.

"Back when I worked with them, this was around 0083," She continues, "I saw some materials from another development team. I wasn't directly involved, but I saw enough to need to sign an NDA. That Mobile Armor has the exact same layout as a Mobile Armor AE developed called the Dendrobium."

"A top-secret Mobile Armor?" You muse, "Huh, what about it entailed the secrecy?"

"I don't know, all things considered the specs were nothing earth-shattering," Christina shrugs, "but that's neither here nor there. What is relevant is that this Mobile Armor is likely highly-mobile, designed with a plethora of weapon systems, all designed to engage multiple Mobile Suits at the same time and come out on top. It's likely controlled by a docked MS as well."

"I see," Eris nods, "What do you think our chances are if we have to fight it?"

She cringes, "Not good. We don't have any heavy-hitters here. The Dendrobium had an I-Field. If this one does as well, then our only hope would be-"

Christina trails off as she looks at Mort, noticing all his empty missile tubes.

"-nevermind. No hope. We don't stand a chance against it."

"All the more important that we take it out now, before they start it up." You propose, "Don't you agree, Commander Mackenzie?"

"…Yes. I do agree. I just worry that it's already active." She shakes her head, "If it is, we'll be destroyed."

"So we should get this done quickly." You insist. Eris raises her hand excitedly.

"Oh, Cybele! We're pretty close to some of the Mobile Suit hangars, the ones where they keep the good stuff, supposedly! Maybe we should go looking for some extra firepower, if we're going to duke it out with a Mobile Armor!"

That does sound like a good idea, but…

"That gives them more time to activate the Mobile Armor," you point out, "and what if we don't find anything useful?"

There's quiet as everyone considers what has just been said.

"They're all valid plans," Christina finally says, "Personally, I think we should launch an attack as soon as possible. If we really do need more weapons, we can retreat and search then."

Unspoken, is the risk that someone might not come back if it really is active.

[] Agree with Commander Mackenzie. That Mobile Armor must die, and ASAP.

[] Argue to return to the Bellerophon. The Captain needs to know about this before you do anything.

[] Argue for Eris's plan. You would rather approach this fight loaded to bear, and if you don't find anything and the Mobile Armor is active, retreat is always an option.

[X] Argue for Eris's plan. You would rather approach this fight loaded to bear, and if you don't find anything and the Mobile Armor is active, retreat is always an option.

"That Birnam Gundam has had more than enough time to inform their allies about our presence." You tell the others, "Not to mention, Zeon Republic forces have been fighting them as well. I think it's safe to say that they know we're here. We're not going to get the drop on that Mobile Armor."

Theo frowns, "I don't want to get picked off by it heading back to Bellerophon, but our loadouts aren't great for bypassing I-Fields."

"Eris has the right idea," you affirm, "we should locate any munitions or equipment here that could help us in the fight against the Mobile Armor. There should still be a good number of Mobile Suits and weapons that were abandoned by Neo Zeon."

"Heh, maybe we'll find a Mobile Armor of our own?" Mort suggests, which just has you and Christina laughing.

"Yeah, as if we'll be so lucky." She shakes her head, chuckling, "Who would abandon a functional Mobile Armor?"

Zeon Republic Sadalahn-class Battleship "Astraia" – Presidential Suite

"Five years…" Amuro cradles the teacup Sayla gave him, forcing a sense of sickening vertigo down, "I don't understand… I can't believe it."

Sayla nurses her own cup with a troubled frown, "I know. Honestly, Amuro, it's a shock to see you. I thought you died along with my brother. I'd hoped that you survived, of course, since I never felt you die, but… I couldn't feel you at all afterwards."

"So, Char really is dead." He closes his eyes, regret and relief mixing together in his chest, "I wish that there was another way, but…"

Sayla nods, silently agreeing. There was no other way.

"There may be an explanation for what happened to you." She returns to the subject at hand, "The Federation developed a Mobile Suit with Psychoframe integrated throughout its structure. The Newtype Pilot who flew it eventually developed the ability to… it's hard to describe. He seemed to reverse the timeline of an object. Specifically, he was able to disassemble the reactor of multiple Mobile Suits as if they'd never been assembled in the first place. In addition, he claimed that during a Psychoframe Resonance, he travelled in time to the Heat Death of the Universe, then came back."

"…Time Travel…" Amuro mutters, "It sounds almost too absurd to be true, but here I am… damn it Char, what have you unleashed?"

Psychoframe is powerful indeed. But was this power too much for Humanity to handle? Amuro was starting to think that maybe it is.

"The Psychoframe in the Nu Gundam resonated with the Sazabi, which pushed back Axis and apparently sent you into the future." Sayla concludes, "I imagine the scientific community is going to have a field day with this."

He nods, taking a sip before looking at his old friend. She was definitely older than the last time he saw her, which wasn't that long ago from his perspective. If this was all a trick, it was certainly an elaborate one. But he trusted Sayla. Plus, she was wearing something that she once would never have been caught dead wearing.

"So, Prime Minister of Zeon?" Amuro teases her with a smile, "What's the story there?"

Sayla blushes a bit, "Ah, well, you're not caught up on current events, but to summarize the Republic of Zeon recently declared independence from the Earth Federation. Again."

At his disturbed expression, she quickly adds, "Londo Bell is also in open rebellion. The Earth Federation has been forcibly detaining and relocating Newtypes and individuals suspected of being Newtypes. As you might imagine, Bright took exception to that."

Amuro sets down his cup and rests his head in his hands. He always knew that the Federation was deathly afraid of Newtypes and mistreated them to varying degrees, but to outright imprison them? No wonder that things deteriorated so badly.

"So…" He looks back up at Sayla, "You took up the torch?"

"In a sense." She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a small device, hitting a button on it. A quiet whining fills the room, barely audible to both of them. She sets it down on the table and leans in, whispering to her friend. Her words were only for the two of them, and she wouldn't let anyone else hear.

Just as quickly, she picks up the device and turns it off, leaning back in her chair as if nothing had happened, "Spacenoid independence was my father's life work, Amuro. How could I stand by the sidelines when my very name could serve as a banner for Spacenoids to unite under?"

Amuro sits back, thoroughly disturbed by what he just heard, "I… I see. Do you need help?"

"I appreciate the offer," Sayla smiles kindly, "but I think we both know that Londo Bell needs you more than I do. Besides, I'm already surrounded by capable individuals. I'm not sure that there'd be much for you to do. Even if you tried, they might get jealous."

"I understand. As long as you understand that you can always call on me for help." He says, pondering both what Sayla said and what she didn't say, "Still, fighting the Federation again… I'm getting déjà vu here."

"The more things change, the more things stay the same?" She suggests with a laugh, "I think it's safe to say that Human Nature never chan-"

Alarms interrupt their conversation, and Sayla immediately heads to the comm panel and opens a line to the bridge.

"Status report!" She orders, and a panicked voice comes through.

"Lady Artesia, there is a Mobile Armor fast approaching! Lieutenant Camilla is already moving to intercept!"

Sayla curses under her breath, "Get our Pilots in the air, now! I will be sortieing as well! Prepare my Bawoo and the Mobile Suit I selected for Captain Ray!"

"Yes, ma'am!"

Amuro follows his friend as the two of them head for the locker room for their Normal Suits. She looks back at him apologetically.

"I know you worked hard to get that Sazabi working again, but we need it. Don't worry, we'll send you back with your cockpit. In exchange, I've arranged for you to receive one of our Mobile Suits. You can keep it too."

"Will it be of any use against a Mobile Armor?" He asks as he wonders what Sayla picked for him. She just smiles in amusement.

"I think that's up to the skills of the Pilot," Sayla teases, "don't you?"

Axis - Mobile Armor Development Bay 4

Neo Zeon left a functional Mobile Armor behind.

"I dunno, Cybele," Christina frowns over your shoulder as the two of you look at the systems readout on the MA's control panel, "This thing is clearly a prototype. I mean, it's meant for Newtypes, so I think any of you kids can use it, minus Mort. But… well, I was just a Test Pilot at Anaheim, but these systems look a lot more patchwork than I'm comfortable with."

You can sort of see what she means. This Mobile Armor was clearly incomplete when it was abandoned. The Funnels are missing any kind of beam emitter, for example, making them just a bunch of guided missiles for all intents and purposes. There's an old sticky note on the control panel warning Test Pilots not to charge the Mega Beam Cannon beyond a certain point or "BAD THINGS" will happen. The I-Field generator looks to be transplanted from another machine, barely fitting in the allocated space for it.

Despite all that, however, the reactor is working. The beam weapons are functional. It's all gassed up and ready to go.

"Big Sis! Big Sis!" Sicilia eagerly climbs into the cockpit, "I can fly it!"

"It would help to have our own Mobile Armor with an I-Field," Christina admits reluctantly, "but she probably shouldn't do more than act as our shield against beams. Sorry if I don't trust this thing to explode if you try and fire the beams."

Perhaps. It definitely would put Sicilia at greater risk, but she wants to do it and there is merit…

[][Sicilia] Little Sis will keep being your Copilot.

[][Sicilia] Little Sis will pilot the Mobile Armor, but purely in a defensive role.

[][Sicilia] Little Sis will pilot the Mobile Armor, and engage in offense as well as defense.

Axis - Mobile Suit Reserve Hangar

If there is one good thing about Anaheim's near-complete saturation of the MS market, it's that their standard is used by practically everyone. So, while Mort wasn't able to find replacements for his missiles, he was able to attach Zssa missile pods to his GM III, as were the Jegans on Christina's team!

It looks ridiculous.

Theo, Eris, and Christina are opting for the slightly-less ridiculous option of holding old Clay Bazookas in their off-hand. Thankfully, enough old AEUG personnel joined Axis after the Gryps War that there's more than enough ammo for them.

As for yourself… you're having a little problem.

The Woundwort already has both arms occupied, along with many hardpoints. There aren't a whole lot of things here that you can add on.

However, you do have a Psycommu unit installed on your MS, and you're looking at a giant Bit Carrier sitting docked next to a white modified Dom.

"System says that it's called the Schnee Weiss," Theo calls out from inside the Dom's cockpit, "These Bits are old, pretty much identical to the ones on the old Elmeth. But I think I can get them working with the Woundwort."

"They aren't too customized for this Dom?" You ask worriedly, "I don't remember the Elmeth Bits as being designed to easily swap between Psycommu control systems."

"True," Theo answers, "but I think it'll work. We just need to boot this Dom up, hook the Woundwort up to the Dom, and then I'll try to get the Bits to sync up with your Gundam instead. Kind of like a handover."

"…You ever done this before?"

"Nope! This is all just theory. Should work, though."

That's encouraging. Still, having Bits would help a lot. Sure, they're not much use against an I-Field, but it does help create distractions, and can shoot down any escorts following the Mobile Armor.

Also, in a pinch, you can suicide them into to MA. Not like you paid for these Bits anyways.

You wonder who used to fly this white Dom?

Eh, not important.

[][Bits] Sync them to the Woundwort's Psycommu.

[][Bits] Leave them, you're fine without them.

Author's Note: I updated the relations informational post on the first page! Camilla (Ple ??) now has an entry!

Chapter 24: The First Newtype-Finale
[X][Sicilia] Little Sis will pilot the Mobile Armor, but purely in a defensive role.

To be honest, you're not 100% certain this is going to work, but you're going up against an escorted Mobile Armor, the capabilities of which are unknown. Still, what Christina said about the Dendrobium is sticking with you. Highly mobile, meant to take on multiple Mobile Suits and ships at once, and come out on top… Sure, the design is about as old as you, but she said that this MA only resembled the Dendrobium in layout. If true, does that mean that this is an updated design?

If so, you're dead without a Mobile Armor of your own… even if it's only to bring an I-Field onto the battlefield. Your own I-Field is too small to provide cover for more than one ally, after all.

"Okay, Sicilia, you'll fly this Mobile Armor." You say, "I want you to be our defense, alright? No attacking unless necessary. Your main role is to provide cover for us with your I-Field."

"Alright, Cybele!" Sicilia grins eagerly, "I won't let you down!"

You really hope that this all works out, and that this half-finished prototype holds together for the fight. If she dies because of this decision, you'll never forgive yourself.

[X][Bits] Sync them to the Woundwort's Psycommu.

"Connection to Schnee Weiss confirmed." You inform Theo as the status updates roll in, "Beginning Elmeth OS emulation… alright, they're talking to each other. What now?"

"Now I connect to the Bits from my end," He says, "and then I'll tune their receivers to receive signals from your Psycommu instead of the Schnee Weiss's. Both MS's Psycommu will be talking to each other, although since this is a bit of an unusual setup with older Bits, it might not work."

"If it fails, at least we tried," You lean back in your seat, "So, Theo, anything I need to do from my end at this point?"

"Nope!" He informs you, "Just relax, and if nothing goes wrong then-"

The room is filled with the panicked voices of almost a hundred men and women. The chambers that seemed so grand and hopeful just hours ago were now smothered in an air of anxiety and fear. This was supposed to be a joyous day, Mineva Zabi's Inheritance Ceremony. It was to be a day to uplift the spirits of those in Axis who struggled day by day to survive. Exiled from the Earth Sphere, you all had nowhere else to go.

Now, the Federation had come, and this last bastion of safety was in danger of falling. You knew it. Everyone knew it.

"How is the situation at our HQ going?" One soldier demanded answers.

"Have we still not received an order to scramble?!" Another cried out incredulously.

"At this rate, Axis will-!" One shouted in despair.

You couldn't watch this. You couldn't watch your home crumble around you like this.

So, you stepped onto the stage, with everyone's eyes upon you. You felt self-conscious in your black dress, but someone had to do this.

"Why are you all just standing there?" You shouted out at the crowd, silencing them, "Why?!"

"Axis has now come under a Federation assault! Why? Why aren't you out fighting!" You raised a hand, urging them to action, "If this Axis were to be lost, what were our efforts from the Battle of A Baoa Qu up until today for?!"

You clenched your fist in determination, declaring, "If no one else wishes to, I will still fight them on my own!"

They cheered. Their spirits rose at your words, and so you led them onwards towards the Mobile Suit hangars. It was almost like a wave of destiny, and you were being swept along.

At the hangar, as everyone hurried to their Mobile Suits, you moved to enter your own. The massive White Dom that your father, the Admiral, had given you. The massive Psycommu backpack made it look so much bulkier than before, but you remember what Captain Enzo told you about them. You'd hoped to be able to test them before actually fighting, but…

You toss aside your cape before slipping through the hatch and sitting down.

"I'm doing something like this…" you say to no one, putting on the Psycommu headset, "but when I've already come this far… I have to do it!"

The Schnee Weiss rumbles around you as you fire up the main thrusters. Before you, the gate swings open. It's time. This is all to protect Axis. To protect your home.

"Haman Karn! Schnee Weiss! Launching!"

"-bele? Cybele!"

You blink, a voice waking you as if you had been sleeping.

Wait, where are you? You were just in your Dom, about to sortie and fight the Federation invaders who had begun to attack Axis! But now-!

No. That's not right. Your name is Cybele. Cybele Naese. You're… not sure what just happened to you. It wasn't like you were watching someone else, you were them. Just for a bit. Their memory?

"Yeah, Theo? I'm here." You glance at the Schnee Weiss, and it just looks… familiar now. It looks so worn and old, you can still remember when it was pristine and new… but that wasn't you who remembered it, was it?

"I was saying that the Bits are synchronized to the Woundwort now." Theo repeats, "You okay? You stopped responding for a few seconds there."

You shake your head, trying to center yourself. You're you, you're here. Whoever that other person was, it was just their echo. You refuse to be troubled by ghosts.

"It's nothing, Theo." You chuckle, "Axis is just haunted, is all."

"Uh, what?" He asks, and you just bring your Composite Shield Booster up in front of you, splitting the blade into beam mode.

"Axis is haunted. Let's get moving before we end up haunting this place too."

You catch a glimpse of your reflection in the center console as you maneuver the Bit Carrier to follow.

It takes a second to recognize yourself.

The Mobile Armor takes point. According to the onboard systems it's called the Ahava Azeiru. Honestly, it's a bit gaudy for your tastes, but Zeon has always been rather obsessed with style when it comes to their designs.

"How's she handling, kid?" Christina asks over comms, to which Sicilia giggles cheerfully.

"It's great!" She replies, "Big Sis, watch this!"

The Ahava spins on its axis, showcasing the numerous verniers distributed across its surface, as well as the limited AMBAC capabilities of the tail and shield arms.

"I see. Okay Sicilia, keep an eye on your propellant, I bet the fuel consumption on that thing hasn't been optimized yet." You smile at her excitement. You suppose getting to fly such a huge Mobile Armor might be fun. If it's still intact after all this, maybe you can take it for a spin.

There's a sharp spike. Pressure and killing intent, from directly above.

"Big Sis!" The Ahava goes into full reverse and thrusts itself upwards, carrying its massive bulk directly above your team. Just in time too. A massive Mega Particle Beam screams downwards, splashing against the Ahava's I-Field and dispersing. You had your own I-Field, but Eris and Theo would have certainly bit it.

Oh yeah, and Mort too.

"Enemy detected directly above!" Christina calls out as both your teams take up position close to Sicilia's flanks, "I see it, the enemy Mobile Armor! There's at least six escorting Mobile Suits! I can't make out their models yet!"

"Big Sis, someone is chasing them towards us!" Sicilia adds. You have no idea how she can tell that, but maybe it's a Newtype thing.

"Whoever they are, they're not in weapons range yet, and neither is that Mobile Armor." Christina curses under her breath, "Cybele, what's the range on those Bits?"

What's the range on them? How does Christina expect you to know that when this is the first time-!

You know exactly how far you can control your Bits.

"…Far enough." You reply, "Bit Carrier, deploy!"

The Bit Carrier splits open like a flower, and the eight white Bits shoot out in all directions, spiraling around you. Just like controlling Funnels, only these are a bit bigger and slower to respond.

You've had a lot of practice with these Bits. You know exactly how they move.

"Alright Bits, let's do this." You mutter, envisioning their flight paths, "All-Range Attack, Go!"

The Bits shoot forward, fanning out to approach from all angles. Time to see if that Mobile Armor has an I-Field. From eight different directions, beams lance out at the Birnam MA, only to bounce off entire meters away from the armor.

Of course it wouldn't be that easy.

"So, you have one too, huh?" You mutter as you redirect the Bits, "But I bet your escorts aren't as lucky!"

The Jegan furthest out is eviscerated, exploding moments after being shot. The other Jegans begin firing wildly at your Bits, hiding behind their shields. Not that it does them much good, as you bag your second Jegan in a flickering ball of nuclear fire.

"Enemy force has entered weapons range!" Christina levels her Beam Rifle at the approaching Mobile Armor, "All units, open fire!"

Alex Team fires every beam weapon at their disposal, as does Cascadia team. You keep concentrating on your Bits, making them go evasive as the Jegans attempt to intercept them. The indiscriminate fire catches another Jegan, heavily damaging them. The MA is predictably unphased by the barrage, however.

That's when the Mobile Armor accelerates, snapping out two Hyper Beam Sabers and blowing the hatches on its weapon containers. The remaining three Jegans follow close behind.

"It's going for close combat!" You command the Bits to orbit the combat area, pointing inwards. If this devolves to a brawl, you won't be able to use them much, but best to have them handy. Without delay, you deploy both Heat Blades. Out of the corner of your eye, you see Eris, Theo, and Mort whip out their Beam Sabers. Christina draws her Beam Naginata, and the Jegan team prepares for close quarters. Even Sicilia makes the Ahava draw two Beam Sabers with its small sub-arms.

"That's right…" You smirk as they draw closer, both your side and theirs holding fire until-

"Physical Munitions!" You shout, "Now!"

Mort and the Jegan team fire off a veritable swarm of missiles from their transplanted Zssa racks, while Christina, Eris, and Theo fire their Clay Bazookas until they're out of rockets. The Birnam MS fire a few missiles, but that Mobile Armor practically unloads every missile it has in both racks! You try to intercept those heading for Sicilia with your Head Vulcans and Long Blade Rifles, but there are just too many. Fire engulfs both your side and theirs.

You hear Sicilia screaming, Eris cursing, and Theo shouting for her. Mort reports in a panic that he's been hit. Alex Team is rapidly talking back and forth as they attempt to get their bearings through the explosions. Through the smoke you see the flashes of Beam Swords.

The Woundwort bursts out of a dense cloud of smoke, and you stabilize it. Where is everyone? That Birnam MA is speeding away, having finished its attack run. It's trailing flames though, and you see it discard the front section of those weapon containers. No more missiles, hopefully. You can't see any of its escorting Jegans, however. Were they shot down?

Eris is the next to emerge from the smoke, and you note that the tip of her right Wing Binder has been cut off. Theo is right behind her, without a scratch on him. Mort is next in an uncontrolled spin, his GM III's right leg missing below the knee. Looks to have been blown off with a missile.

The Ahava rises from the smoke like a whale out of the ocean, missing its entire left shield arm and with chunks missing all across the frame. It took a beating, but it's still moving.

"Cybele, my I-Field is down!" She reports in a panic, "What do I do?"

You're about to answer when you feel hostility from directly below you, and you turn just in time to catch a Beam Saber between your Heat Blades. A Birnam Jegan glares at you, missing its entire left arm and right foot. This is too close for Bits, so you'll have to take it down with melee!

Forcing the Jegan back, you kick it in the chest to push it away, then rush forward and catch its Beam Saber with one Heat Blade while spearing the cockpit with the other!

"Weapons free, just don't overcharge that main cannon!" You answer Little Sis before turning to help Mort fend off the second Jegan. Meanwhile, Alex Team is dismantling the third in CQC, although you can't help but notice that one of their own Jegans is dead in the water.

"Understood!" Sicilia urges the Ahava forwards towards the enemy MA, "Funnels!"

The tail splits apart, revealing itself to be a series of interconnected Funnels which all fly towards the Birnam MA. It fires both its Mega Particle Cannons, destroying some, but small explosions can be seen as the Funnels impact it. One of those beams hits the Ahava, shearing off one of its shoulder Beam Cannons.

"Stay back!" Sicilia brings the remaining one to bear and fires, coring the MA's right weapon container. It explodes, making it veer off course. Its I-Field is down too!

Your team finishes off the last Jegan and turn to assist Sicilia. That Birnam guy is circling back around, with noticeably less weapons than before!

"His I-Field is down!" Sicilia tells your team and Christina's. That's great, then you've got him!

But… why isn't he retreating?

Then a little pod ejects from his remaining weapon container, heading in a different direction away from you.

"What's that?" Eris asks as she trains her sensors towards it, "It just left weapons range!"

The answer comes quickly, as it begins… strobing. Large sweeping curtains of light swing across the battlefield, and… no, are those beams?

Sicilia's shriek sharpens your focus. The Ahava is reeling from a hit, one of the beam curtains having hit her.

"It's some kind of scattering-beam!" Christina curses as her incapacitated teammate ejects from their Jegan before the whole thing blows when the beam curtain passes over it, "Cybele, hit it with your Bits!"

"On it!" You envision the Bits again, drawing them a flight path in your mind. You see them dart towards the Birnam Beam Pod, but en route you see one, two, three flashes of light. You're down to five, with three getting hit by those beam curtains! Then the Bits finally enter range.

"Fire!" You mentally pull the trigger, and the five Bits shoot the Beam Pod, causing an explosion which takes out one more Bit. Down to four.

"Incoming!" Christina fires her Beam Rifle at the Birnam MA as it charges your group, your own team joining in. The hail of beam fire tears off its left arm, and destroys the upper Mega Particle Cannon. The lower one fires, hitting your I-Field and making your whole MS shake.

The remaining Weapon Container ejects the bit that held the Beam Pod, before snapping open into some sort of claw! It launches it at blinding speeds, and the thing heads straight for Christina. She nimbly dodges, only for the Claw to reacquire one of her teammates. It smashes into them, and you hear the Pilot scream as it latches onto her, squeezing the Jegan's arms tight to its side as the entire frame warps from the pressure. That's another friendly down!

"Get away from them!" Sicilia screams, firing up her main thrusters and charging the MA with both Beam Sabers drawn. The Birnam MA blocks one thrust with its remaining Beam Saber, but is unable to stop the Ahava from driving the second deep into its engine block.

Then the front of it snaps open, ejecting the Gundam from earlier. Sicilia puts the Ahava into full reverse to distance herself from the exploding MA, but the Gundam grabs on and draws its Beam Saber. It raises it, ready to spear the cockpit.

Oh no they don't!

You fire both Composite Shield Boosters, not even bothering to change them into Claw Mode but instead turning on the Heat Blades. They see it coming and quickly switch to defend. The first Heat Blade is deflected, but the second tears into their left shoulder and cleaves off the arm. The impact sends them spinning away from the Ahava, but they quickly reorient and toss their Saber to draw their Rifle. They begin to raise it-

A blue blur slams down onto the Gundam, crushing its head and sending it careening away.

"Sorry, I'm a bit late." Amuro says as he steadies his Doven Wolf, "This guy left behind some of his friends. We had to deal with them first."

The Birnam Gundam once again brings its spin to a halt. It starts moving erratically, probably an attempt at evasion while they switch to the Sub-camera.

Two red fighter craft shoot by you, heading towards the enemy Gundam before combining to form the Rebawoo just before it reaches it. With a single swing, Artesia splits the Gundam's rifle in half.

"Learn when to give up." She said firmly, "This is Artesia Som Deikun of the Republic of Zeon. We will be taking you and any surviving colleagues of yours into custody."

There's some silence from the Gundam, before you finally hear the pilot laugh. It's not a kind laugh, an amused laugh, but no, a deranged laugh. You're getting chills from this guy, and it's not just the Pressure you've been sensing, but… they're just not right in the head!

It reminds you of some of the children who came out of the Flanagan Institute.

"I'm sure you'd love to have me as a guest," He chuckles, "but that day won't be today."

You can almost hear Amuro frown as he says, "What makes you think you're in a position to refuse?"

Why would he say something like that? It's almost as if… no, you're feeling something. A growing sense of danger. You turn to look in that direction and see one of Birnam's Columbus-class ships in the distance, barely visible. One of its hangars is open.

What's going on there? They can't seriously be threatening you with a freighter? But… something isn't right. You need to find out what. But how can you do that without getting close? This is too far for your cameras!

Of course, as a Newtype with a working Psycommu and Bits, you have options.

"… Bits." You close your eyes and try to sense through them as you send them towards the Columbus. You're still new to Bits and Funnels, but it's almost second nature.

The Columbus appears in your mind's eye from four different angles as each Bit tries to close in. One Bit is destroyed by fire from escorting Jegans, too far to get a good look. The second gets a bit closer, enough to see that this Columbus has heavy AA coverage, before it too is taken down by escorts. The third shoots one of the escorts to clear a path for the fourth, but is itself destroyed.

The fourth enters weapons range and you fire it off once, glancing the ship as you see into the first open hangar. A massive Hyper Mega Particle Cannon rigged up inside, facing forwards. It's already charged, but hasn't begun the firing sequence.

Then that Bit is destroyed in a hail of anti-aircraft fire.

"…Not good." You grip the controls at the realization. If they want, they can wipe all of you out. An attack from a Hyper Mega Particle Cannon will be more than powerful enough to destroy the lot of you, especially bunched up together like this. You won't be able to close the distance in time…

"The enemy ship has a Hyper Mega Particle Cannon," You quickly inform the others, "I think they're going to fire it if we try and take this guy."

"How astute of you." He says, and you can practically hear his smug grin, "So this is goodbye. But rest assured, we will meet again, and when we do things won't go your way."

"Wow," Eris comments to you, voice dripping with disgust, "What a sore loser."

"You had better hope we don't meet again on the battlefield." Amuro replies to the Birnam mercenary before addressing everyone else, "Ensign Cybele, I'll follow you back to your ship. Did you lose anyone?"

"I think I have to give Mort a ride," you look back at his damaged GM III, "Anyone want to help tow him?"

Theo answers by pulling up alongside you. The three of you link hands.

"I got one down, another disabled." Christina replies, her MS holding a disembodied cockpit while her teammates are towing the one trapped by the MA claw, "We should be able to make it back on our own though."

"I can still move!" Sicilia chimes in, even though the Ahava looks like it tried to reenter the atmosphere without a heat shield. It should hold together. Hopefully.

You consider the overall result of this mission as you head back to the Bellerophon. Moderate damage to Mort's GM III, one entire Jegan lost and one heavily damaged on Alex Team… and although you took down more than your equal, fighting a private military doesn't help much against the Federation.

However, the acquisition of Amuro Ray more than makes up for it. Not to mention a half-destroyed MA prototype.

And… maybe a ghost.

Bellerophon-Pilot's Quarters

Today was super stressful, but you're glad it's over. You gave the Captain your report, so now all that's left is to just relax until tomorrow, when you'll have to talk with your team about the mission. Do a post-mortem and everything. Maybe help the others repair their MS, and tune up yours.

Also, you have to figure out what to do about the Ahava Azeiru. It's still functional, technically, but will need a full refit in order to be combat ready. Rhea expressed interest in doing it, but… well, that's something to figure out later.

You can't wait to get some sleep… but your thoughts grind to a halt as you see Amuro Ray waiting by the door to your room. He raises a hand in greeting.

"Um, hi Amuro-I mean Captain Ray." You stammer, but he stops you.

"Please, Amuro is fine." He says, "I apologize for earlier. You didn't deserve to be put on the spot like that."

"Thanks…" You resist the urge to smile, "I take it that Miss Artesia told you about the whole time-difference thing?"

Amuro nods, "I'm still having a hard time believing it, but when the proof is right in front of me like this, I can't exactly deny it."

Yeah, who would believe that time travel was real? The very idea seems so absurd… but then again, you suppose a lot of absurd things have happened ever since Newtypes were discovered.

Sicilia tugs on your shirt, "Big Sis? I'm gonna go take a bath."

You let her head on into your room, only realizing a second too late that that means the door will be opened, and Amuro has a direct line of sight to the interior.

You lunge for the door, but not soon enough. Sicilia pushes it open, and Amuro glances out of the corner of his eye, then does a double-take. You slam the door shut after Sicilia went in, but far too late to prevent him from seeing the dakimura, the posters plastered onto the walls and ceiling, the little figurines, and pajama set on the dresser, all of which bear his likeness.

Oh god. He saw. He saw everything. You feel his gaze boring into the back of your head. You're almost afraid to turn around.

Slowly, you face him, and you die a little inside at the blank stare he's giving you.

"I… I admire you." You squeak, adding quickly as he raises an eyebrow, "-as a Pilot! Yeah, I think you're a great Pilot! Amazing! I'm just very enthusiastic about your skills, Captain!"

His dead silence makes you shrink in on yourself. No, not like this!

"…So where did you buy all of that?" He asks in deadpan.

"The… The gift shop?" You offer sheepishly, and you see his eye twitch.

"….I see." He replies simply before turning around and walking away. This can't get any worse.

"Big Sis!" Sicilia opens the door, her chirping voice filling the corridor, "Should I use the Amuro bubble bath or the normal one?"

He freezes near the end of the hallway. Oh god he heard that.

"The… The normal one…" You weakly tell her.

"Right!" She smiles, "The special Amuro one is for Big Sis!"

She shuts the door, sealing your fate. You slowly look back to Amuro, who has turned back around. If you could die from sheer embarrassment, you'd be pushing daisies already.

He doesn't say anything, and just leaves.

You don't really believe in God, but you find yourself praying to be struck down. If anyone hears your prayers, they don't grant you any mercy. You have to live with this shame.

There are a few days before the Bellerophon returns to Londenion, accompanied by the Zeon task force. How should you spend this downtime?

[][Interlude] Focus on going over the mission with your team, to figure out what you did wrong, what you did right, and how you can improve.

[][Interlude] Follow Amuro around. You have to salvage his image of you!

[][Interlude] Take the opportunity to talk more with Miss Artesia and other Zeon Republic personnel. Both as a curiosity and networking in case you need to seek an alternate employer later.

[][Interlude] Something is haunting the Psycommu in the Woundwort. Exorcise it.

^This option is going to be about as goofy as it sounds.

There's also the matter of what to do about the half-wrecked Ahava Azeiru. It could definitely be fixed up, seeing as the control system, reactor, and propulsion systems are still intact. It would be a pretty big project though, and you'll need to get more resources from Londo Bell to pull it off. After all is said and done, the end product will belong to them even if it's assigned to the Bellerophon. On the other hand, if you just disassemble the thing for parts, it would add to Londo Bell's stockpile of components.

Well, you have to do something with it. It's no good to anyone like this.

[][Ahava] Start drafting repair and refit plans with Rhea. You want the firepower this thing will bring to the table.

[][Ahava] Scrap it for parts. This thing is old and obsolete anyways. Something more useful can take up the Bellerophon's central hangar later.

Extra Record-2-Meanwhile..
Side 4-Shoal Zone-Sometime during the Bellerophon's Mission at Axis

The G-Forces were extreme. Jona held on tightly to the controls, wrestling with the Narrative. Normally he'd never put a Mobile Suit under such extreme stress, even when augmented by so many boosters and verniers as the A-Packs provided. However, he needed to pull these maneuvers, he needed to accelerate this fast, it wasn't an option if he wanted to keep up with… her.

That golden Phenex, the iridescent RX-0 Unit 3. Still in Unicorn mode, but still fast and maneuverable. It darted around and between colony wreckage, the flare of its thrusters flashing rapidly with each course correction. Jonah needed to anticipate her moves! He needed to move faster! As the Phenex went inside a derelict colony, he saw his chance.

"There!" He deployed his Large Beam Sabers and began carving up the colony from the outside, herding his target. The High Mega Cannon began to glow as he triggered the charging sequence.

All of this couldn't be for naught. This was the culmination of years of effort! All of the enhancements he'd accepted at the Federation's Cyber Newtype Labs, all of the people he'd betrayed, all of the sins he'd committed in the past two years, it had to lead to success here!

The Phenex burst out of the colony, right where he'd anticipated.

The A-Packs High Mega Cannon fired, slagging nearly a tenth of the colony wreckage, but the Phenex nimbly threw itself to the side. That's fine, he's just trying to disable it! Jonah didn't expect to hit it anyways! Unfortunately, he didn't damage it either.

He just needed to keep up the pressure! The Phenex may have been a marvel of engineering, but the Pilot was still Human! Even though she was a Newtype, she wouldn't be able to keep this up for long!

Beam Rifle fire stitched across space in front of Jonah, forcing him back.

"Londo Bell," He bit back a curse, "Get out of my way!"

A handful of modified Jestas came screaming in, propelled by boosters attached to their backpacks. Londo Bell's Shezarr Team. An elite unit, they'd already claimed a number of Pilots in the Federation's Newtype Corps. Jona had been wondering where they'd been this past month.

With a single command, he unloaded all of his missile pods at Shezarr Team. They went evasive, as Jona thought that they would, but the goal was to slow them down. All of the Londo Bell MS were forced to bleed speed dodging his missiles… except for one. It was like a yellow comet, changing course on a dime and making short work of the missile screen that Jona put up.

It was Londo Bell's RX-0. Unit 2, Banshee.

Jona quickly switched the Capture Units from Beam to Psycho-Capture Mode, and deployed barriers in time to deflect a shot from a Beam Magnum. That Pilot wasn't pulling any punches!

Jona switched one unit back into Beam Saber mode, and swung at the Banshee. The black RX-0 blocked with its Beam Saber, and it locked eyes with the Narrative.

"Just go home," The voice of that traitor, Riddhe Marcenas, was transmitted via optical, "This isn't a fight you can win."

Jona smiled bitterly. Perhaps not, but he would be damned if he didn't at least try!

"Win or not," He growled, "I have to try!"

A rapid burst from his Head Vulcans made the Banshee back off a little, which gave Jona enough time to boost away and head for the Phenex again. She'd stuck around, for some reason, but started to flee once again as Jona resumed the chase.

So it was startling when it suddenly reversed course, deploying both Beam Tonfas and slashing at him.

He didn't get the Psycho-Capture system deployed in time, and one of the units was lopped off near the base. Damn it, he couldn't nullify the Phenex's Psychoframe without it! That left him only one option! Michele wouldn't like it, she was sure to give him a tongue-lashing once he got back to the ship, but what choice did he have?

Before the Phenex could distance itself again, he launched a grappling wire at it. The small wire wrapped itself around the Phenex's arm, and before the golden MS could move to cut it off, Jonah took a deep breath.

"Rita!" He shouted the name of the Phenex's Pilot, the name of the woman he'd spent years looking for, "It is you, isn't it Rita?"

The Phenex paused, and Jona felt his heart soar. It was her, he knew that he felt her! Her presence was distorted from their childhood days, no doubt a result of all the Cyber Newtype enhancements she'd gone through, but it was her!

"Please, Rita, come with me!" He pleaded, "I promise, no one will hurt you! You've been through a lot, but I swear, you don't have to suffer anymore! Please, just come back with me to the ship, and we can-!"

"…Jona?" The voice of a scared young woman issued from Jona's headset, a voice so familiar that it made him want to cry, but her next words chilled him, "You too?"

The armor of the Phenex seemed to tremble, to shudder, and blue light began to spill from the cracks.

"You want to take my wings too?"

"Shit, kid!" The Banshee's pilot shouted, "Get away from it!"

"No one…" Rita's voice trembled in anguish, fear, and defiance as the Phenex's armor segmented, revealing bright blue Psychoframe. The visor opened up and the horn split, revealing the face of a Gundam, "No one will ever take my wings again!"

Light swallowed them whole.

Earth-Davao-Around the Same Time

"I've got a bad feeling about this."

The Captain of the Salamis-class Detroit muttered to himself. He'd been waiting for Ellle Vianno to return with Hathaway after their meeting with that Mafty Navue Erin group. They were supposed to be back an hour ago. He was starting to get a bit worried, especially since they hadn't taken Elle's Mobile Suit with them. Something about it being too conspicuous.

Yeah, like an atmospheric shuttle wasn't noticeable already. Their paperwork wasn't exactly ironclad, if anyone bothered to double-check it against the Fed's central database, they'd be screwed. The sooner they were out of here the better.

"Come on, you two…" He peered out of the front windows, "What's taking you so long?"

Then, in the dark, he spotted a Federation Jegan walking towards the hangar he was parked in. Oh no. Wait, this didn't mean he was automatically dead, maybe it wasn't looking for him at all?

That hope died as soon as it walked right up to the shuttle.

"Shit!" The Captain managed to scream before the Jegan's Head Vulcans fired, pulverizing the cockpit of the shuttle and him with it.
