The Law in Regard to Persons of Semi-Divine Nature (Cassiemouse)
The Law in Regard to Persons of Semi-Divine Nature

The following is a transcript from the legal proceedings of the village of Nimur, near Whiteclay, against the river spirit Shimmering Reflection:

Historian-Judge: Can you explain to us the issue so everyone is clear on the situation going forward?

Nimur Villager: Of course, we were performing our death rites on our elders that died this winter, burning their corpses and sending their souls to rejoin nature. Everything was fine for a few days afterwards until we found one of the members of our community dead on the shore of our river. The river spirit does not deny that he was drowned and claims that the ashes from our pyre were poisoning their waters.

Historian-Judge: And what do you have to say in your defense Shimmering Reflection?

Shimmering Reflection: The man who performed the death rites was trying to curse me with the ashes of the elders! My mind grew confused and when I awoke I found my beloved drowned on the bank of my river. I believe the rite leader was jealous of our relationship and wished to see me hurt by this hostile working.

Nimur Villager: Shimmering Reflection has protected our village for generations. Why would we or anyone in the village wish them ill? No one even knew about their relationship before hand. She must have been corrupted by the fel magics of the League of Strength!

Historian-Judge: Our warriors report no such sightings of nightmare spirits this far into the Great League. Do you have any proof of this corruption?

Shimmering Reflection: The ashes of the dead were turned to the purpose of corruption by this man!

Record of the first testament of Shimmering Reflection against Nimur Villager. The case is ongoing and will be reviewed again this coming summer.

In recognition of this work, a boon:

The incident caused scandal across the League especially when it was discovered that the ritual leader was not at fault. Shimmering Reflection had flooded out of season and drowned her beloved, and in her grief she had formed a lie to distance herself from the blame.

The greatest controversy was over how to discipline a spirit who had failed to uphold her end of the social contract - the proper rituals had been observed, yet the spirits had erred. The matter was taken by the holy men directly to River-Woman, who promised to deal with the matter. It was said after that her daughter was "recalled to serve at her mother's side for an age, so that she may learn wisdom". A new spirit was soon seen in the Shimmering Stream and took up the task of governing the water.

Some said that the new river-spirit had something of a family resemblance to Shimmering Reflection's beloved.

Arik Moon-Feather knelt demurely along the banks of the spring, his owl spirit alighting on his bare shoulder. Wise-Eyes disapproved of his frequent trips to this little lakelet, as close as it was to the League of Strength, but the young, handsome priest had been visiting the mirror-like waters since he was but a slip of a boy, and he loved to use it to brush his long, flowing, shining locks in the full light of all-knowing Mnemosyne. Despite his sweet and retiring nature, a rebellious spark kindled deep within his lightly-muscled breast, pushing him to keep to his tradition even as the enemy League encroached ever closer.

Little did the innocent Arik know that he and his sage companion were being watched at that very moment from the deep shadows across the pond. A hulking, brutish figure, with rough-hewn jaw and bulging thews, his breathing slow and steady like a waiting predator. The turbulent crimson pools of his eyes were fixed on the young Arik, assessing his quarry's beautiful form, tracing over every perfect bone and slender limb. Deep within him, Dark-Talon, the spirit of the hunt that had been bound to his form despite his own innermost doubts, howled for the blood of the younger man, but the war-shaman Krys Swift-Leaper restrained that dark urge just as he did his own... for now...

Blissfully unaware of the danger posed by the great brute of a man lurking in the shadows, lithe Arik passed the brush effortlessly through his perfect, gorgeous russet locks, the gentle waves of his hair shining in the moonlight just as the placid waters below did. His night-shift slipped ever so slightly, falling off his shoulder to reveal a slender torso with unblemished fair skin and just the faintest hint of definition.

Wise-Eyes hooted reproachfully and flapped over to the exposed shoulder, using his beak to lift the strap back into place, but the damage had already been done. The Swift-Leaper, his dark hunger already surging within him, could not help but fix his intentions on the innocent young priest. A low growl emanated from his barrel chest as a wave of dark fur surged across his skin, his form becoming even more bestial and muscular, and he slowly stalked out of the shadows, teeth gleaming in the darkness...

In recognition of this work, have a boon:

It was inevitable that with the rise of literacy, so too would be the rise of fiction writing. At this stage copying was still expensive and time-consuming and novels experienced limited circulation, and most were still meant to be read aloud to audiences. While as mentioned the most popular genres were speculative novels that featured science-fictional elements, the romance novel had its dedicated following. These ranged from the truly salacious novels that were circulated quietly, to serialized narratives that were read aloud weekly to audiences kept on the edge of their seat by "will-they, won't-they" relationships.

Indeed, in this time many written works experienced an eternal half-life as readers in turn composed their own unofficial and unauthorized sequels and spinoffs featuring their favorite characters. For example, the romance novel Missed Connection (about a woman who travels the League's railways in search of the man she shared an overnight car with) received a notorious unauthorized sequel in which she instead ends up with the train conductor.

The League of Letters in addition to circulating philosophical ideas also circulated some very strong opinions regarding these popular works of the day.

Tfw you want to honor tradition, but not be mired by it... I feel like the spirituality of the True People would get preserved while readily adopting certain customs that might keep them from stagnating or complacency. I felt that keeping the Sheik as a figurehead would be more respectful of Santuary's practices so that it's less like eating Sanctuary and more like melding with them. That's just my personal reasoning; I'm totally fine regardless of outcome tbh. They were all great and interesting choices imho.
