Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

[X]Talk to Shasa

Inquire as to what insights she may have gleaned regarding the courtier's art on our travels, both to gain a point of view we can compare to our own musings on the subject and to help her collect her own thoughts on the matter so as to improve the prospect of her receiving courtier training in the future.

After that, or before that if it would be more appropriate, make small talk. Discuss our respective sensei and classmates at our dojos, our families, any experiences on the Wall that weren't horrible (draw-lots plays, for example). Get to know her better.

[x] Talk to Shasa
-[x] Inquire as to what insights she may have gleaned regarding the courtier's art for as far as the travel has gone.
-[x] Also, ask her about what she's expecting from Kyuden Ikoma and the Ikoma's Bards.

[x] After this, or if she's not in the mood of talking, finish the timeskip to Kyuden Ikoma.

Butchering Sandman's vote. Seems like a good idea up to asking her about how far she has progressed in her training as a courtier, coutesy of Yasuki.

However, I don't think Sosuke should inquire in something more personal, like the previous training she had in the past. That can backfire.

Didn't mean to imply asking "what training did you have", more like "what amusing anecdotes do you have about the equipment nobody wanted because the padding was wearing thin or Person A who kept humming that one song nobody knew the name of or whatever other little details that you think of when you think of your dojo".

You know, making conversation to get to know a person. Nothing deeply intimate, just the little stories we all have about our lives that we like to tell to others. The stuff two friends would chat about.

Ehhhhh... I recall that the last time we attempet to dialogue with her regarding her training/dojo life, things didn't come out very well. She felt uncomfortable, and... I don't want to take a risk on that you know :\

[x] Complete the Timeskip to Kyuden Ikoma.

The days go by swiftly as you travel, and soon enough your caravan emerges upon the venerable open plains of the Ikoma family. The wide, open landscape is a stark contrast compared to the mountains you have been traveling through this last week. The earth is lush and full of vegetation, and when the sun sets it is almost as if the endless plains of wheat you see growing from numerous farms have been lit on fire.

It is not only wheat you see as you travel, however. As you make your way down the road there are many small fortifications interspersed at regular intervals amongst the vast tracks of farmland. These modest barracks would likely not hold more than a hundred soldiers at the very most, but you count more than five of them as you leave the mountains and venture into Lion territory proper.

The forts are squat and well built, each with a wall more than three times the height of a man. There are emplacements atop those barriers for archers, and you imagine anyone trying to assault these structures would have a tough time of it. Tall towers rise from each stronghold, no doubt to help with lookouts and for ease of communication between the barracks. With those a large force could be mobilized and respond quickly to any threat that might take the forts.

Rumors of the Lion military seem to hold truth, you think to yourself as you gaze upon one of those citadels. This thought pleases you, for it brings to mind memories of home. This land is well protected.

It is early into the second day of your travel into Lion territory that riders approach your caravan from one of those forts. Ten Samurai wielding spears follow the commander, a man in splendid armor coated in golden lacquer wearing a helmet with a great mane of hair. Their steeds are larger than your own, obviously bred for war rather than long distance travel, and atop those beasts the Samurai cut an imposing figure.

"Travelers," the commander calls, heeling his horse but a few feet from your group. "I am Ikoma Kantaro. You bear the marks of the Crab Clan. Show us your travel papers and state your business."

"I am Yasuki Goro," your superior says, handing over the proper identification. "And we are on a diplomatic mission to treat with the Dragon Clan."

One of Kantaro's men moves forward and retrieves the papers for his commander. Kantaro looks over the papers swiftly, nodding as he read, before handing them back to his subordinate to return to your superior. The man settles atop his mount and bows in his seat toward Yasuki Goro.

"Your papers are in order," he says as he straightens. "I wish you well on your journey. Cause no trouble within our borders, and your time here with the Lion should go pleasantly."

"My thanks for your words," Yasuki Goro responds, bowing back. "May the Fortunes favor you, Ikoma Kantaro-san."

"And you, Yasuki Goro-san," Kantaro says. He wheels his horse around and rides back toward the barracks where he is stationed, his subordinates close behind. Within ten minutes they pass the gates, which are promplty closed behind them.

That entire event was quick, clean and efficient. You find yourself impressed. No doubt Kantaro would have signals given from the tower to the other forts along your way, telling them to keep watch upon your caravan but also indicate that you had right to travel. That would mean far less interruption along your way, and you are happy for it.

It is three days later when you see Kyuden Ikoma in the distance. The great castle is like the myriad fortifications you have seen dotting the plains, but much larger. It looms over six stories tall, surrounded by a great wall and heavy gates. Beyond that wall is a bustling community, around which there is yet another towering wall. The entire city is a fortress, designed to break armies and send death back toward all who would attack.

Considering the number of wars the Lion have waged over the centuries, it no doubt has. Even here, at the seat of power for the courtiers of the Lion, there is strength and readiness for war. Diplomacy backed by raw, naked power.

Not a bad notion, in your opinion.

The Shasa thing is adorable and dorky, but I don't really *want* a potential wielder of blood magic to be our main romantic interest. We don't need to just go for it at every opportunity. Also, Shirou probably has some interesting insights here.

Honestly, I'd seriously consider voting for speakign with the Ashigaru if I thought it had a chance of winning, but it doesn't look like it does.

Actually, I was more into talking with Shasa about what she expects from watching the Ikoma Bards, since she wants to get some training as a courtier.

You look upon the towering fortress city of Kyuden Ikoma for a few moments more, admiring its strength and purity of form. There are no illusions behind the shape of Kyuden Ikoma. It is a place of strength, a rallying point for the armies of the Lion. Upon those flat plains it stands like a beacon, and your eyes are continuously drawn to it as you travel.

You make yourself turn your gaze away. It will be hours yet before you reach the city. Those mighty gates are still miles away, and there are other things you could do with your time than stare at them. It is better to do something productive, even if just simple conversation, than to merely look upon the distance in silence.

You move your horse next to Shasa's. Your fellow Yojimbo has also been observing the city in the distance. Her expression is neutral, almost unreadable. Even still, you think you see a faint trace of awe in her eyes.

"Shasa-san," you say to her, bowing. "I see the city has captured your interest as well."

She takes her eyes away from Kyuden Ikoma and gives you a little look.

"Sosuke-san," she responds, bowing to you. "It's only natural the castle would hold attention." She waves a hand around you to take in the plains. "The land is so flat it seems to stand out all the more."

"Indeed," you say. "It's a good defensive position. They can likely see an invading force coming from miles away."

"Further, even more likely," Shasa says. "No doubt those signal towers we saw on the way would eventually reach here as well."

"The Lion are certainly living up to their reputation so far," you comment. "If even the holdings of the Ikoma, the Family that holds most of their diplomats, is so well defended as this."

"This Clan is focused on war, from what I have been told," Shasa says. "Second only to our own where that is concerned." She looks at you and smiles. "But they do have other interests. The Ikoma are, after all, some of the greatest story tellers in the Empire."

"That they are," you respond. "It is my hope that I might learn something from observing them."

"I'm sure you will," she comments. "You've proven quite perceptive before."

"Your words do me honor," you say, your face reddening a tad. You wonder if it will always do that around Shasa. "I will do my best to live up to them."

"I'm sure you will," Shasa says before looking back toward the castle. "I myself am looking forward to a little time amongst the Ikoma. They are the courtier of the Lion, and you know I have an interest in the arts of the courts. Who knows what methods they employ?"

"Likely related to storytelling and history," you respond. "Considering those are their two main areas of interest."

"No doubt," Shasa says. "Seeing exactly how they utilize that will be an interesting thing indeed, if we can manage it."

Our main monk needs some love too. Also, I am kind of interested in getting a more philosophical viewpoint on the city, especially considering that this fortress-city is designed to fight humans instead of the Fallen.
