Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

[x] Attack with Tetsubo, use Void point to negate damage as needed.

My knowledge of the L5R battle system is rudimentary at best, but I think there are a couple of ways for high taint characters to ignore wound penalties, temporary or otherwise.

Indeed. It can happen, so is safe to assume this is a foe that woild be hard to take down by ourselves. Posible, that is, if dice is in our side.

Actually... it's an interesting thought. How hard was it to hit this guy? If he's a "monstrous strength, tons of HP, no wound penalties, somewhat inaccurate, easy to hit" build, then we might be well-served to attack for knockdown or something similar. Two raises isn't exactly trivial, but having your foe be on the floor can be handy.

Hmm... even if this situation doesn't call for it, @Winged Knight, how you handle raises in this quest? Same as the RPG?

Same as the RPG, yes. You must call two Raises and on a successful attack make a contested Strength roll against the target. Should you win the roll against your enemy, he will be knocked prone and require an action to stand up again.

Thanks WK. Changing vote.

... On second though.

Just gonna leave it as it is. With all said, an option is to make Hachi spend his turn on other actions that is not attacking. As Sirrocco said, we should be able to aim for a Raise, but... since a raise adds... +5 to the TN IIRC, according to the core book.

+10 to the TN seems costly, is basically tempting fate. Yeah, the best is leave it as it is.

[x] Gman

Your anger unabated, you charge forward again and swing your tetsubo with all your might. It is a heavy blow, one with your full weight behind it. It is an attack that you could easily see breaking wood and shattering stone, if you were in the right mind to appreciate it. As it is, you only care for striking down the enemy before you!

Hachi is unmoved by your anger, however. He interposes his katana between himself and your tetsubo, his arms bulging with unnatural musculature. Your weapon slams into the man's sword, creating a enormous clang that resounds even above the din of battle. Hachi grunts softly, and shifts his feet, but that is all. He has stopped your attack cold.

With a furious cry the Lost one throws you off. You stumble back, cursing under your breath. You don't have much time to grumble at your failure, however, as Hachi's counter-attack has his sword flying toward your face. You duck quickly, getting out of the way with but a moment to spare. The blade continues its motion and smashes into the wall of the other room, tearing out a huge chunk of wood and sending shrapnel flying.

You move forward while he is off balanced, bashing your tetsubo onto the Tainted man's back. More cracks riddle through Hachi's armor, and this time your blow makes the man stumble forward. You grin through the fury beating through your skull. It is only right that the Lost one suffers, only right that he reels from the righteousness of your assault!

"Enough!" Hachi roars at the top of his lungs, sounding more animal than human, and before you can react his katana hammers into your gut.

The force of the strike is monstrous, even greater than the Ogre's blow you took so long ago during your Gempukku. The attack takes you off your feet and sends you flying. For a brief moment the world stands still, and you have a feeling of weightlessness. This ends quickly when your back impacts with the far wall almost twenty feet away.

You gasp, and barely hold back the bile rising in your throat. The food you have eaten today struggles to escape from your stomach, but you hold it down. You feel wetness under your armor, soaking into your clothing. You're bleeding…

With one shaking hand you reach for your belly, but find that aside from some chipped lacquer work the armor held up against the inhuman strength of the Lost. Your mother's gift cushioned a blow that could have easily ripped a man in half, saving you from far worse injury. But even still, it could not lessen the assault entirely. Such was the force behind Hachi's attack that it has broken your skin without the blade even cutting your flesh.

The fury pounding through your skull fades in the face of that revelation, and you look back up toward your enemy. Hachi is smiling again, a terrible, pointed smile better suited for a shark than a man. He takes a step toward you, both hands on his sword.

"Did you really think it would be so easy?" Hachi growls. He seems to have lost track entirely of the battle going on around him, focusing only on you. "Gonna kill you, little Crab. Kill you and wear your skin like a cloak."

[] Write in.

Sosuke has taken 30 Wounds from Hachi's attack, after Reduction. However, since you voted to use a Void Point, you have negated 10 points of damage. As such, you have suffered 20 Wounds. You have 58 Wounds left. Sosuke is also now in the Nicked Bracket, and will suffer +3 to all TNs until he has healed. You have 1 Void Point remaining.

Yeah...Lost Bushi are completely bullshit.

WK, how's the rest of the fight going?

From what Sosuke can see, it's relatively even right now. Your side is better trained and has better gear, but their side has numbers and Tainted mutations helping them out. Along with whatever Hachi did to encourage his people to fighter harder, of course.

[x] Willpower Roll to regain control.
if sucessful.

"You think, you think, that this ends with anything but your death? You are marked Hachi, marked by your dark master, and the Empire. The Empire will kill you, and then your dark master will spend your soul as a pretty little trinket for some gaki. I wonder if you really understand your fate..."

Switch to full defense mode, and use guard actions on anyone he tries to go after.

If failure

Called shot to the knee, and attack. Use Void if damage is in excess of 20 points on us.

A called shot to the head requires 3 raises, and with a Void of 2 you can only make up to 2 raises in one combat round. I'm sorry, but because of this Sosuke is unable to call a shot toward the head.

So is safe to assure we won't get help for now. Hmm... What you think guys? Should we keep HIDA smashing him? Or start turtling him until we can get help (assuming this may happen soon)

For now I go with this:

[] Keep fightning. If neccesary, recite your oath (I AM THE WALL), and charge forward.
-[] Get ready to spend your remaining void point to mitigate some more damage.

If we get the TN +5 Penalty we will be in a world of trouble.

[x] fight on the defensive, and keep Hachi's attention on you. Don't let him go after any of your allies. You are the wall, after all
-[x] spend void points if anymore damage is received
-[x] if the opportunity arises, use the jade finger as an improvised weapon. Strike him in an unarmoured spot.

Someone with more knowledge of the L5R battle system gauge the feasibility of that last course of action. It sounds fine to me, but I only know the barest basics if the system, so it could be the equivalent of trying to grapple a fire elemental for all I know.

Accodding to the inventory, we still have that ring of jade so... Now it would be a good time to use it.

[x] Cannongerbil

Suppoeting his idea until proven otherwise.

I hate to double post, but I really do need more votes. As things stand there's not really a clear consensus beyond just defensive action.

[x] Cannongerbil

Stay alive and occupy the Lost until the battle is over or we die there doesn't seem to be much else we can do.
