Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

[X] Write down the content of our dreams now, before they fade - particularly including the sensation they left us with afterwards. Then do our standard morning routine in peaceful environs such as this: practice, bathe, eat, in that order. The familiarity will help calm us.

We might want to look into this "Kohsa-sama" (a phoenix, perhaps?) as if our dream is telling us correctly, he's at least at great danger of falling to maho.

Also, it sounds like Narako foresaw the return of the Shadow Dragon, and was quite possibly destroyed for it... and it looks like *that's* a hot-button issue for Kyosuke as well. That's... well, if true, that's word that we really would like to have returned to our friends in the Kuni. Of course, it might also be merely a dream.

[X] Find an appropriate time to approach Yasuki-sama and engage in conversation.
[X] During the conversation, mention the dream (referring to your notes). Acknowledge that it could just be a dream, but that your dreams have had real meaning in the past (during your gempukku) and that you apparently are at least a bit spirit-touched, so you figured you should at least pass it along. Gratefully accept any advice he may have to offer on the matter.
[X] Ask if he's heard of anyone that might be this Kohsa - particularly among the phoenix. It might at least offer some degree of confirmation as to whether or not this is a real dream.
[X] Also mention Shasa's request. "Yasuki-sama, I have been speaking with Shasa-san. She wishes to spend our travel time in improving herself for the mission, as you have been assisting me to do, but is concerned that she not impose upon one of your status. Would it be acceptable for her to come ask you for insight as well? Alternately, do you have any advice I might pass on to her on what she should do to prepare on her own?

Lodging this one a bit early because my schedule has recently gone from completely awesome for this quest to absolutely terrible for this quest, and the only way I'm going to get in votes in time for them to be seen by anyone is to vote on turns that haven't been posted yet.

Also, if there are Scorpion listening... you know, the Scorpion generally get along more or less okay with the Crab. It's the Crane they really dislike, and there's a real opportunity here if they can swing it right. If they can influence the Crane initially to not give anything to the Crab (or, even better, just let that happen on its own), they can then use that as a way to paint the Crane as ungenerous, failing in their duty to the Empire, etc, etc, etc. It won't amount to much, but it suddenly becomes a much bigger deal if the Shadowlands really are moving in force. They pull that off well enough (perhaps throwing in a bit of extra generosity of their own to really crank it up), they can make it so poisonous that the Crane will be near-forced to give generously just to stem the bleeding (taking the financial damage that implies), but also won't really get credit for it, because everyone will know they got hounded into it. They'll also gain favor from the Crab for the assistance and glory for their courtiers for pulling it off... and if things really are heating up, the goodwill of the Crab may well be worth that much more. (Also, as far as the scorpion are concerned, it's *always* nice to have friends among the Yasuki - especially in those times where you either need or have money, or are targeting someone who either needs or has money).

Actually, it would probably be worthwhile to tell our story to a few Soshuro Actors if we can find them, as our tale (properly tweaked) would make a nice little opener (possibly even a short act 1) for the play.

Holy Shit! o.o

*clears throat*

TL;DR: We can make the Scorpion to influence the Crane into not helping the Crab, or simply let a batman gambit to trigger, and be forced to help the crab anyways because public pressure due to a upcoming war with the shadowlands. Also this would benefict them, for the Scorpion also would like to have a friend among the Yasuki...

Hmm... honestly, I also want to think this was a REALLY bad dream. If this results to be true, then with more reason the Crab will need to get all the Jade we can... as well as other resources (man power among those). If it is just a dream, then panicking would make us lose the glory/honor we won during our gempukku.

Also, sorry to hear that Sirrocco, really this quest is really awesome for the write-ins, and yours are simply brilliant!

I wasn't meaning to panic - just to pass word on to our superior, who can then address it as he will.
For the scorpion thing - I was thinking the initial plan from the perspective of the Scorpion. As far as helping out that plan (by sharing the story with the Soshuro) there are a few factors...

There's a good chance that even if they decide to go with this plan (which seems reasonably likely) the Scorpion won't do anything to turn the Crane against us. After all, if we figured out that they'd done that (and the Yasuki are in general pretty competent courtiers, and good at bribing for information), it would blow away the "favors from the Yasuki" side of things, and do some notable damage to their ability to pull the plan off at all, making it much higher risk. On the other hand, if they just wait... well, if the Crane do give generously, they've lost nothing (as opposed to giving the Crane a potential opening) and if they don't (which seems likely), the Scorpion can go ahead with Plan A while risking nothing.

As far as us sharing the story (and the information) with some appropriate Soshuro, that's admittedly a mixed bag. On the one hand, having lead time to at least start writing and practicing the play, and the extra narrative payload that our story could bring, would give them that much more impact in the courts (which at that point we'd like - we have no real fondness for the Crane, and the worse it hurts, the more they'll give). On the other hand, the shugenja of the Scorpion *do* lean towards wind, and "instantly pass vital information between Scorpion courtiers at various courts" is totally on the list of Things They Do - which could result in the local scorpion at the Crane courts finding out about the incoming Crab before the delegation shows up (this making the bit where they try to influence the Crane beforehand at least *somewhat* less risky). It depends, really. I suppose the better bet - no need to seek one out, but if someone asks... well, we do wish to practice our storytelling, yes? ....and the thing about the Soshuro is that there's no real way to know when the person you're talking to is an Actor.

Anyway, my real point was that having them know might not be a bad thing, overall. To the Scorpion, news of the goings-on in court is a weapon... but it's not necessarily a weapon pointed at us.

Thank you all for your patience. I really appreciate both it and your continued participation in this Quest of mine. I'm glad people have been enjoying it enough to keep coming back with votes and commentary. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

What's that? You say you like commentary?

Intelligence Roll to remember the details of your dream: 2k2=5

You take several deep breaths, forcing yourself to calm down fully. You are safe here. There is no danger, no threat of eyes in the darkness. You are not being worn down... You are not fading away…

The thought makes you shudder, and you feel your heartbeat speeding up just at the memory. That dream… It was so strange, and yet seemed so real. But at the same time it also feels not real. Dreams are not something you've really given much thought about, a few especially vivid nightmares aside.

You put your tetsubo away and look around for some paper and ink. You find some in a small cabinet near the bed. The paper is course and rough, not like the fine paper you've seen on official documents, but it will serve well enough. The ink, for the most part, is also plain. But you don't require anything truly fancy for this.

"What was that name?" you mutter as you try to write down the details of your dream. Sadly, your memory appears to be fighting you. "Kohsa?"

You spend almost half an hour struggling to remember as much as you can, but sadly the paper is barely even one quarter full by the time you set the brush down. You curse the lack of information you can recall. The time it took for you to regain composure also allowed the specifics of the dream to fade away. All you have are a few names and some flashes of remembrance, but no true context. It's hardly anything to go on at all.

And then there is the utter darkness that was at the end of the dream, and the feeling of simply ceasing to be… The thought makes your skin crawl. That particular part of the dream you remember with far more clarity than you care for.

You stand up with a growl and move to your tetsubo once more, hefting it with both hands. No more can be done on the matter of your memory, at least for now. To worry too much over all this when you are unable to act, especially when it could have just been an especially intense nightmare, is a waste of time. Better to focus on more productive things for now.

You go through the forms with your weapon, taking care to avoid damaging the room as you do so. The familiar motions help clear your mind of your lingering anxiety, purging the shameful feelings of fear an doubt from the core of your being. There is no room for such emotions, not when you are one with your weapon and your surroundings.

You spend half an hour practicing, and when you stop you find you have worked up a decent sweat. You nod in appreciate. This is good. Sweat means proper work has been done, and your time has been well spent. A better perspiration, for sure, than waking up having drenched your bedsheets. Now you just need to clean up a little bit.

One of the monks directs you to the Temple's communal bath, and you quickly clean yourself up. You might have taken the time to enjoy yourself with a nice hot soak, but the sun is continuing to rise and very likely Yasuki Goro is going to make the caravan head out as early as everyone can manage to get ready. You don't want to waste time.

After your sweat has been washed away, and you have put on fresh clothing, you make your way to the dining area. There are many more monks in there now than there were last night, all enjoying a breakfast of rice, vegetables and fruit. You get yourself a bowl and pile a fair bit of both fruit produce on your plate, happy to get some food in you. When you turn around to find a place to sit, you see Yasuki Goro looking back at you from his own table.

"Sosuke-san," Yasuki Goro calls, waving a hand. "Here, lad! Come and join me."

You make your way to him and sit down, patiently waiting for him to take the first bite of his mea before you begin your own. It is plain fare, like the food from the night before, but it is nutritious. Everything a body needs to stay fit and healthy.

"Such simple cuisine," Yasuki Goro says, taking a bite of one of the vegetables. "I mean our hosts no disrespect, but I admit I will be happy to go to a place with some more flavor to their meals."

"The monks do appear to be awfully direct and austere in all things," you say. "But I can't deny that their cooking is rather filling." You smile. "So at least we will not go hungry during our stay."

"Hah! Well, you've got a point there, lad," the courtier says before taking a few bites of rice. "So, what have you been up to? Has your time here in Shinden Osano-wo been as enjoyable as you'd hoped it would be?"

"Hello Yasuki-sama. It has for the most part. I spent some time learning from a monk named Shirou last night. While I can't say I'm ready to shave my head quite yet, I do respect them more than I did. Their method of prayer is invigorating at least it is for me"

Look over at Goro

"Have you been to many Shrines Yasuki-sama?"

Well, what can I say. Gman's vote covers the experience with the monks...

Mind if I add some stuff on it?

-[x] Give a description of the training, and what you understood from it.
-[x] Mention about their method of prayer, and the fact that you have been struck by a lightning, and saw some imponent figure as a vision.
--[x] Don't jump into the conclusion that said vision was Osano-wo, for it may be saw as ia not you who are talking, but your pride. Be humild.
[x] If there's still time.
-[x]"Have you been to many Shrines Yasuki-sama?"

It was quite an experience, and Yasuki-sama will appreciate to have this as part from the experiences Sosuke had in this journey.

As I'm writting this, I would like to ask: how much of an idea would be keeping a written record of those experiences, just like he tried to do with the pleasant dream nightmare?

inb4, I mean about a record of the most significant experiences only, not the day on day basis. Two months are a lot of time, and keeping the memories of all those experiences he had (and I'm pretty sure it will be more), would be a tricky task.

Also, regarding the "Scorpion plan" Sirrocco gave, I think it would be better to wait to mention it oncei Sosuke leaves the temple with the caravan, but before arriving the Scorpion territory.

Gonna need some more votes.

Also…
What's that? You say you like commentary?

I do indeed! I'm perfectly happy with people going into in depth discussions on the merits or possible detriments of any specific course of action taken, as well as pointing out what they enjoy and do not enjoy about the Quest. It makes me feel good knowing I've made something that people care enough to keep coming back to and discussing.

I will readily admit that I am not familiar enough with the lore and fluff of The Legend of the Five Rings to really discuss the details involved. However, the writing has been well paced, the details are just enough but not too much, and the characters feel like living, breathing people come alive from the page. So, that is why I continue to come back to this Quest. :)

Even if it is just to vote Sirrocco's option most of the time. :p

This quest is the main (and only) reason I'm trying to learn about L5R as much as I can. I got the rulebook and all.

Planning also on GM L5R in RL once I finish as well :p

[x] Plan Gman, with the addition of a comment as to the possibility of Shasa being taught at least the rudiments of the courtier's art (i.e. the level 1 stuff) by Yasuki-sama. We did make her a promise, after all.

[x] "I did not seek enjoyment so much, but it has certainly been enlightening. I spent some time learning from a monk named Shirou last night, and it has brought me to greater understanding, and greater respect, of what it means to be a monk. Their method of prayer was... not what I had expected. I admit I was impressed."
[x] If he inquires further, share your experiences. Use it as another bit of storytelling practice.
[x] Leave it deliberately vague in your story as to whether it was the Fortune. Was he watching? Was he not? Such things are not for a humble samurai like yourself to say. However close your brush with his greatness, it certainly left an impact on *you*.

...then, if the conversation permits it.
[x] "Yasuki-sama, I have been speaking with Shasa-san. - [x] if he inquires further, mention that she had wanted to learn more of the courtier's art, but, again, had not wished to impose, and that we had thought she might benefit from seeking greater understanding of the tao (to give her a topic to converse in), but were not certain how that would fit into his plans.

We can save any questions about this "Kohsa" for a time when we are on the trail, and not surrounded by ears.
Asking for him to train her an entire *rank* in his school? That's *way* beyond what it is reasonable to ask, even if we were certain that he had been acknowledged by his school as a sensei. Even asking him to train her for a skill point or two of courtier is a notable favor - that's why we're leavign it up to him.

Like I'm sticking with my own vote, but Sirrocco has a very good point in teaching the whole school tech.

However, I'm going to assume the voters mean level 1 skills not a school tech.

That said for Sasha to get a school tech she has to impress the Yasuki Daimyo/Sensei so don't expect it to come for her easily.

[X] Sirrocco

And yes, I meant "stuff you learn on the way to the Level 1 technique"; I just figured that calling it Level 0 stuff would be even more confusing.

Going to guess, by the by, that she was picked for the mission because of her kenjutsu skills; the Crane may be widely regarded as having the foremost dueling school in the Empire, but the Mirumoto school of swordsmanship has the best claim to being its equal of any of the alternatives. Yasuki-sama might intend for her to make contacts there.

Courtier Roll: 4k3=23

"It's not that I was really seeking enjoyment," you say. "I just wanted to see what the temple erected in honor of the son of Hida was like. It has certainly been an enlightening experience, I must say."

"Oh?" Yasuki Goro says before taking a bite of some fruit. "How so?"

"I spent some time learning from a monk named Shirou last night," you say. "And it has brought me to greater understanding, and greater respect, of what it means to be a monk. Their method of prayer was... not what I had expected. I admit I was impressed."

"You stood out in the storm last night?" the courtier asks, raising an eyebrow as he gives you a quizzical look. "You're lucky you didn't catch some kind of chill, doing that."

"So you know how the monks pray to the Fortune?" you ask, a portion of your surprise bleeding into your tone.

"I've met more than one monk of this temple before," Yasuki Goro says. "And seen them yell out in the middle of a thunderstorm encouraging Osano-wo to strike them." He shrugs. "It's brave, certainly, but I wouldn't do it myself."

"I'll admit it was… rough," you say. "Lightning struck quite close to us, and for a moment it was as if the world had slowed down. I could see energy coursing between the raindrops and the earth, creating a tapestry of power." You lower your voice, leaning in closer to your superior. "And as I flew through the air, I could see why the monks pray in this manner. What better way is there to experience the strength of their patron? To know for certain that he has taken notice of your efforts?" You lean back. "It is harrowing, but I find I respect them all the more for it."

You noticed as you fell silent that Yasuki Goro was looking at you closely, and you realize just how deeply you had gone into your vague retelling of your experience. It occurs to you that you might have been speaking just a tad too familiarly with your superior. You open your mouth to apologize…

"Good," Yasuki Goro mutters. "A little sparse on details, but still attention grabbing." He smiles. "We'll make a storyteller out of you yet, Sosuke-san! With a few weeks more practice I'm sure your tale will rouse even the hearts of the Dragon when the time comes."

You close your mouth with a near audible click. That was not the response you were expecting, but you certainly can't complain. And he's right, though you certainly hadn't intended to prove him so. You've gotten better at relating experiences in interesting ways, at telling stories. That means you've become better suited for Yasuki Goro's plan for you.

Which brings to mind another thought…

"Yasuki-sama," you say, taking care to choose just the right words for this. "I have been speaking with Shasa-san. She wishes to spend our travel time in improving herself for the mission, as you have been assisting me to do, but is concerned that she not impose upon one of your status."

"She does, does she?" Yasuki Goro says, leaning back with a frown. "That's a bit more initiative than I was expecting from her. A bit more care, as well."

"Would it be acceptable for her to come ask you for insight as well?" you ask. "Alternately, do you have any advice I might pass on to her on what she should do to prepare on her own?"

"Did she explain why exactly she wanted this?" Yasuki Goro asks, his expression neutral. Gone is the joviality of before, replaced by a mask of professionalism. He is looking at you intently, and you have to keep yourself from sweating under the man's gaze.

"She desires to be of use in the coming discussions," you say, maintaining your composure. "And wishes to learn more of the courtier's art." You come in close and lower your voice. "She does not wish to impose upon you, though. But I think she might benefit our mission if she had training in diplomacy, as well as a better idea of her place in the coming negotiations."

"I had originally just planned for her to be a body guard," Yasuki Goro says. "And perhaps have her use her kenjutsu skills to ingratiate with the Mirumoto a bit, as well as use her beauty as a distraction where I could." He cups a hand under his chin. "But she's shown a decent amount of drive speaking thus with you on this matter, as well as tact by recognizing her place." He stays silent for a few seconds, mulling it over before dropping his hands. "I will have to think on this, but at first glance it appears this idea might be workable."

"I thank you for your consideration, Yasuki-sama," you say, bowing in your seat. "Whatever you decide will assuredly be for the best."

"No thanks are necessary," the courtier says, waving a hand. "Besides, you've certainly given me some interesting things to think about. That is always a boon during these long trips." He stands up, a smile returning to his face. "In any event, you had best get ready. We will be leaving in an hour or so."

He nods once to you, and then walks away toward his room. You quickly tear into what remains of your meal, filling up on the wholesome food. That discussion had been… tense. It had been like the brokering of an agreement, or something very close to it. You're not entirely certain if it ended favorably, but Yasuki Goro did not appear offended. If anything he seemed thoughtful. That has to be a good sign, right?

You hope so, anyway.

You sigh as you set your chopsticks down on your empty plate. This whole deeper discussion thing is something you're still very unused to. The pitfalls and traps are so hard to maneuver around, and you've not even spoken with members of other Clans yet! But even still, you think you're making good headway toward understanding it all.
