Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

[x] Go find something resembling dinner, time for our rice.

We haven't eaten IIRC since the morning, gotta keep that strength up. Plus RANDOM ENCOUNTER HO!

[x] Go find something resembling dinner, time for our rice.
Good point. Would have missed it myself, but going to bed hungry would be a poor choice.

[X] Chow time. If the kitchen is closed, eat one of our rations instead of making the cooks reopen it.

[x] Go find something resembling dinner, time for our rice.

You put a hand to your stomach, only now noticing the pangs of hunger you feel. After all the events of today you did not realize you have not eaten dinner. The tea has helped your appetite somewhat, but you're going to need something a bit more substantive for an actual meal.

You stand up and exit your room. It is quite late now, so you do not have the highest hopes that whatever communal eating area the temple has will still be serving food. On the other hand, the monks are still training outside despite the evening getting on. So that means at least something might still be available for those who have not yet eaten.

It takes you a little time, but eventually you find yourself in a large room set with many tables. There are a few monks eating there now, though the room is nowhere near full. You look around for where the food is and see a long table set with bowls of rice, plates of grilled fish and pots full of what appears to be some form of vegetable soup.

You get yourself a little of everything and set it on a wooden tray. You could tae it back to your room, but that would be a bit of a walk and you'd really like to eat now. Most of the room is empty, so it's not like you're lacking for paces to sit.

Then you see Shirou sitting at one of the tables. He waves at you, and you nod back. You make your way to him and set your tray down. The monk appears to be more than half finished with his own meal, and oddly enough appears to have recovered quite quickly from the wounds you both suffered from the lightning strike outside.

"A pleasure to see you again, Sosuke-sama," Shirou says, bowing in his seat.

"And you, Shirou," you say as you bow back. "I'm a little surprised to still see you up. Didn't you say you were going to get some rest?"

"Only after a proper meal," Shirou responds. He pats his belly contentedly. "We must take proper care of the body if we are to nourish the spirit, after all. Exercise brings up a great hunger!"

"I would have to agree," you say. You take a bite of the fish. It's not seasoned at all, and quite plain. It's obvious the monks here go more for substance than taste with their food. "Which is why I was hoping to eat something before turning in."

"A wise course of action," Shirou says. He sips a little of his soup before continuing. "I am glad you take proper care of yourself, Sosuke-sama."

"Well," you say. "I have to be fit in order to do my duty."

"Of course!" Shirou says, grinning. "And it's just easier to think when your stomach is not growling like an angry bear."

"That too," you admit.

You both take a few minutes to actually get into your meals after that. The food is plain, and like the fish the rest of it isn't really all that flavorful. But it is nutritious, and full of everything the body needs to function properly. Which you suppose is the point.

From what you understand, many monastic orders would put greater emphasis on fasting in order to detach the body from the material world and become closer with the spiritual. But you've always heard the monks of Osano-wo are of a different opinion. The body is how your spirit experiences the world and grows toward its final destination. Considering all you've experienced so far at Shinden Osano-wo, you can certainly believe this is the case.

"Will your caravan be traveling tomorrow?" Shirou asks as you approach the end of your meal.

"That's ultimately up to Yasuki-sama and the weather," you respond. "I imagine we will be on the road again if the roads aren't muddy and the rains have become more manageable."

"Storms are quick to come in these regions," Shirou says. "But they never last too long. I imagine tomorrow will see you several hours of cloudless skies until the next time the Fortune decides to let the world feel his strength."

"That is good to know," you say. "Our mission is quite important."

"Oh?" Shirou says. "If you will forgive my prying, Sosuke-sama, could you share exactly where your caravan is heading?" He grins sheepishly and rubs the back of his head. "I will admit I've been curious for a little while now."

Is there any reason why we shouldn't tell him it, even if only in general? It's not like it's any secret or anything from what I understand.

Agree because come on, Sosuke has trained with him, and got "struck" by Hida Osano-wo's physical manifestation on ningen-do a lightning, alongside him.

[] Share the goal of your caravan.

The point is, however, how much of that goal should we share? For explaining him a lot would also lead to tell about the gempukku, and don't know how he would react to the fact Sosuke's name has a weight in honor and glory.

In that, I'm torn between either just telling him we are going to the Dragon but don't share the details, or telling him the whole story about how the shadowlands are likely to soon see heavy activity and we are going to secure resources against it in the lands of the Dragon, in a nice and concise narrative.

[X] Tell him that with the Shadowlands becoming active again, the clan is negotiating new agreements due to the changed situation. Our particular group is ultimately bound for the lands of the Dragon.

The second would help us in improving Sosuke's storytelling skills, but considering they're monks, how much the would appreciate of rub them in the face about "I'm a hero of my clan :^|"

I'm like more the former idea, is just more safer.

PD: And speaking of which...

"The Shadowlands are becoming truly active again," you say. "I'm sure you've heard of the Battle of Skulking Shadows a little over a year ago?"

"Word did reach us of that," Shirou says, nodding. "It was apparently a highly organized attack." He pauses for a moment, considering. "But haven't the other attacks, while large, not been nearly as well directed?"

"You hear a lot at this temple for being somewhat out of the way," you say, a little surprise bleeding in to your tone.

"Not too out of the way, really," Shirou says with a grin. "Many traveling this road from the Crab, Scorpion, Crane and Unicorn visit us and speak of many things. Members of the Minor Clan of the Wolf have also frequently brought us news."

"Well," you say. "That certainly helps with the explanation. It's indeed true that the last several attacks have been sizeable, but ultimately not as well planed as that Battle of Skulking Shadows. But it is the fact that said battle was so well planned to begin with is what gives my Clan Champion, Hida Tanaka-sama, cause for concern."

"The Crab are worried that perhaps the Shadowlands are gathering?" Shirou asks. "That they're becoming organized?"

"Yes," you say, glad that Shirou has caught on so readily. Which only makes sense, considering the martial nature of Shinden Osano-wo. "And if so, we want as many resources as possible to help us deal with the threat. To that end, Hida Tanaka-sama has sent emissaries to the other Clans to work out new agreements." You pause for a second, considering if you should continue. But your caravan isn't really a secret, so there is no harm in speaking further. "We, in particular, are heading for Dragon Lands."

"That's quite a ways away," Shirou says. "A long journey to take, going from one end of the Empire to the other."

"But necessary," you say. "The Dragon have recently come across very rich veins of Jade in their mines. The Crab could use that."

"No doubt," Shirou says. He stand up and bows to you. "I wish you well on your endeavors, Sosuke-sama, and a pleasant evening as well." He turns his head and covers up a yawn with one of his hands. "I mean no offense, for this conversation is very interesting, but I must go to bed soon. Today has been quite exciting, and I need some rest."

"I understand completely," you say, standing and bowing to Shirou. "I wish you a good evening as well."

Shirou smiles at that, and then heads away towards the other end of the temple from your room. Considering how martial Shinden Osano-wo is, Shirou very likely sleeps in a communal area not unlike a military barracks. The room you're in is for those times as the Temple has guests. It seems individual sleeping arrangements are more of a luxury than even the worldly monks of Shinden Osano-wo care for.

You stifle a yawn with your hand and notice that most of the monks have left by this point. The room is almost empty save for those last few eating, and very soon everyone will likely turn in for the night. Considering how tired you feel, you're starting to think you will likely be one of those people.
