"I will keep your presence secret," you say, keeping your voice low. "For now, anyway."

"My thanks, noble Samurai," the Kitsune says, bowing her head again. "I appreciate your discretion."

"If you don't mind my asking," you say, sitting up straight. Your tetsubo is within reach, but you keep your hand where it is. "What exactly do you want? I mean no disrespect, but I'll not agree to anything else until I know what is going on."

The tails of the Kitsune wave once behind her, and she tilts her head at you. You get the feeling she's measuring something, but you're not sure what.

"You are very cautious," she says.

"I think that's only appropriate," you respond. "Crab Samurai who aren't at least somewhat careful tend to die rather quickly."

"I suppose that is a fair point," the Kitsune says. "There is a small group of Ronin about two miles from here who have taken something precious of mine. Their leader keeps it close to him a all times, so it would be difficult to steal it back." The Kitsune's tails wave again, this time in the opposite direction. "I would like your aid in retrieving it."

You frown. "And why exactly am I the only one who can help you with this?" You motion to her tails. "You are a spirit. Undoubtedly you possess great power."

"I do," the Kitsune says, looking uncomfortable. "But there are rules for how much I can interact with Ningen-do."

"Ad they would prevent you from retrieving this object?"

The Kitsune is silent for a time, studying you. For the first time in this conversation you notice that her eyes are glowing faintly in the dark. You almost miss this thanks to the light of the fire outside. It is a gentle glow that illuminates the Kitsune's eyes, almost like the full moon. It's strangely beautiful, in a way, and you have to keep yourself from staring at them.

What exactly is going on here? You wonder to yourself. Kitsune this far from the Shinomen Mori, or the Kitsune Mori, are rare. But then again, you've not much knowledge of spirits outside of the monsters that come from within the depths of Jigoku. Information on creatures of the other realms is more the domain of the Kuni and Toritaka families.

So you really cannot answer why this spirit approached you? But you don't think she means any immediate harm. You didn't notice her presence until she spoke, and if she'd desired to hurt you she could have done so while you slept. But it still could be some Kitsune trick, so you keep yourself alert. You don't want to be taken off guard.

"Imagine," the Kitsune says, speaking up at last. "If you will, a young fox who ventures out because she is interested in the world. She sees a young man, a monk, tending a small shrine on the road and decides it might be amusing to scare him away and take this shrine for her home. But the monk sees through all her tricks and illusions, always revealing the fox in the end. But the monk is not unkind, and does not drive her away. He leaves out food for her, and bows in greeting when he sees the fox."

Your brow furrows. It seems like the Kitsune is telling you of her past, though you can't imagine why. It's an interesting story, to be sure, but how is it relevant to you giving her aid? Why is she handling this conversation in such a roundabout manner?

"Eventually," the Kitsune says. "The fox falls in love with the monk, and comes to him in the form of a human woman. They court, for a time, and the two are married. And for three years they live in blessed happiness."

The Kitsune's expression goes dark, and the light of her eyes flashes brighter. You barely keep yourself from flinching, and curse your nervousness getting the better of you. Still, it is hard to maintain calm and composure when a spirit is sitting not four feet from you.

"And then imagine that a band of Samurai, ones who wished to stay at this tiny temple for the evening, decide that the monk is showing them disrespect. That they cut him down and leave him to die while the fox is away gathering herbs. All the fox has left of her husband is a small pendant made of jade and gold that she commissioned for him, something to show her love for the monk."

"That would be what these ronin have taken from you, then?" you ask.

"Yes," the Kitsune says softly. "They discovered my den in the Shinomen Mori while I was chasing off some interlopers from Gaki-do. I have tracked these Ronin for five days now, but I have been powerless to retrieve my possession from them."

"Why?" you ask. "And why do you need me specifically? I'm not the only Samurai in this camp."

"There are rules," the Kitsune says again, her tone sad. "I am bending them greatly by interacting with you like this, but by your scent you have already been approached by a spirit. That gives me a little leeway."

"All right," you say. "And why can you not harm or bargain with these Ronin to retrieve your pendant?"

"Because I slew the Samurai who murdered my husband," the Kitsune says, her teeth drawing back in a snarl. "And because I killed them for revenge I can no longer bring harm to any human for whatever reason. If I do I must abandon Ningen-do forever, and I cannot do that."

"Could you explain?" you ask. You raise a hand at the Kitsune's look of annoyance. "I realize I'm asking much of you, but please tell me what you can. I need to know as much as possible before I make any agreement to help you."

"My husband will eventually be reborn to Ningen-do," she whispers. She gazes away from you, but you still see her forlorn expression. "And that pendant will allow me to find him when he is. I will be able to live with him again, love him again."

The Kitsune's shoulders slump, and you can see tears forming in her eyes. All the energy seems to drain out of her, like she has to make an effort to sit upright. She looks so… defeated. The expression looks odd on her face, too human for her animal features. Even still, you can tell she is weary.

She has pushed herself greatly to travel this far, and almost as much to tell you all this now. You can't be entirely certain, but you get the feeling she is dancing across a narrow path. One misstep will send her tumbling away, and she will never be able to climb back up again. It would certainly explain why she seems just so beaten down.

"If I bargain with the Ronin, they may extort favors from me that might break the laws I am bound by," she says softly. "And then I will never see my husband again. If I harm the Ronin that would also break the laws that allow me to stay here." The Kitsune looks up at you, her tears flowing freely. They shine like little droplets of silver in the faint light of the tent. "Please, I beg of you, help me retrieve my pendant. I… I do not want to imagine life without my beloved. It would be too much to bear."

Alright. She can only ask us for help due to rules.

But is there anything saying that Sosuke can't round up a party and go do this? (Not that I'm necessarily advocating for this -- it might be too hard to convince our travelers of this, and of course if our leader could say "No" in which case, well.)

So, with that said... On the one hand, she seems desperate and if telling the truth, then she needs help.

As for if she's telling a sob story just to get us... Eh, that seems a bit conveniently cynical. Plus there might be a downside to refusing. (There might also be consequences and downsides to accepting, too.)

If we did try to retrieve the trinket though, how would we do it? Trade for it? Steal it? Challenge 'em and kill 'em? Something else? Or do we say no to the spirit who seems quite desperate?

Courtesy demands we help her, but no need to be stupid about it.

1[x] Agree to Help
2 [x] Using our writing skills leave a note for Yasuki Goro explaining what we're doing and why.
3 [x] Following the path of the Hiruma make our way over to the ronin, be stealthy.
4 [x] If they have a watch quietly talk to the watch and explain our need, ask him to bring the ronin leader to speak with us.
4.2 [x] HIDA SMASH! If the man proves intractable
4B [x] If no watch, wake up the ronin leader with Tetsubo over head. Politely ask for the trinket. Revert to 4.2 if needed.
5. Return back to camp. Use point 4.2 as needed.

Just for the record, I don't think ladykitsune is lying. At worst, she's being too good at faking this all out.

HIDA SMASH is practically Sosuke's trademark. :p

Also, leaving the tent will make us step with the guarding ashigaru. If they didn't saw ladykitsune, then Sosuke is gonna have to find a way to explain the situation, so he may not go too far on the votes as @gman391 proposes. I like his votes though, and should be taken into account in the future.

Wait.

Providing assistance to a spirit is all well and good, and shows compassion and whatnot, but the virtue of the Crab is duty. This takes us from our duty to the clan, pits us against a group of ronin (who have, by the laws and rules binding both us and them, done nothing wrong) and could get us killed. Let's have some perspective here.

So - she has pushed herself as far as she can. Got it. She desires our assistance, and we'd kind of like to help her out. If nothing else, the gratitude of a spirit is always a good thing - and the blessings of a kitsune tend to be the sort that would be helpful in this place. Grand. Still, we really need to talk with the boss before we do anything about this. Also, ambushing honorable (or at least not particularly dishonorable) opponents in their sleep? No. This is not the Samurai way. Yes, when fighting creatures of the shadowlands, you take every advantage you can get, and feel good about it, but this is different.

It is only an hour past nightfall. That's good.

[x] Tell the fox that you require permission from your superior. You have compassion for her, and you wish to help, but your life belongs to the Crab. It is not your own to spend.

@The Sandman

The Kitsune already took care of the Samurai that murdered her husband.

Keep in mind that the Kitsune might not want us to inform our superiors. Because rules. We might lose the opportunity for this quest if we tell people. Just something to consider.

"I want to help you," you say, an almost wince at the hopeful look on the Kitsune's face. "But I will require permission from my superior to do so."

"But…"

You raise a hand. "I believe your words, and have compassion for your plight. But my life is not my own. It belongs to the Crab Clan, and I must abide by what the Clan decides as determined through those above me."

The Kitsune is quiet for a time, her lips drawn back in the approximation of a frown. She seems to be thinking quite fiercely on something. While she's doing that, you stand and slip into some proper clothing. If you're going to be approaching Yasuki Goro about this, you'll not be doing it in your smallclothes.

"I am only kept from interacting too much with mortals myself," the Kitsune says at last. She seems very uncomfortable. "There is nothing keeping two mortals from conversing on what another has heard…"

You nod your head. "My thanks for your understanding."

"These laws can only be bent so much," the Kitsune says. "And I am already treading dangerously close to breaking them. Please, be careful."

You nod again, and slip out of your tent. There are two Ashigaru by the fire pit, keeping watch while roasting some yams for a snack. They give you a sitting bow as you pass, and in response you give them a wave of acknowledgement. You've not interacted with the Ashigaru or the servants much, but they seem like good and loyal folk. Showing some courtesy to such people is only proper.

You make your way to Yasuki Goro's tent and sit down, bowing deeply. Still with your head bowed, you raise your voice softly.

"Yasuki Goro-sama, I apologize most profusely if I am waking you, but there is something we need to discuss."

There is a rustling inside the tent, and after about a minute Yasuki Goro exits. He is dressed in a simple sleeping robe, and his eyes are slightly blurry from having just woken. He breathes deeply and nods his head to you, which you take as your cue to straighten.

"Well, lad?" the Courtier says. "What's all the commotion? I'm assuming it's not an attack, considering the Ashigaru aren't yelling and you're so calm."

"Indeed, my Lord," you say. "I apologize again for waking you, but I have found myself in a strange situation."

"Lad, if you need more advice about girls, couldn't it have waited till the morning?"

"It isn't that, my Lord," you say, holding back a blush. "I have been approached by a Kitsune who is requesting I retrieve a pendant for her that has been stolen by some Ronin."

Yasuki Goro's eyes shoot wide open. "You what?" He looks around. "Where is this fox spirit?"

"She has kept herself hidden," you say. "She appears to be bound by odd rules that she could not fully disclose to me without breaking them. I don't believe she can interact safely with anyone else."

"Hrmm…" Yasuki Goro says, holding a hand under his chin with a frown. "Interesting. I believe you, lad. It's an odd thing you tell me, but I believe you."

"With your permission, Yasuki Goro-sama, I would like to help this Kitsune. The pendant is very precious to her, and she seems sincere."

"That may be so," Yasuki Goro says. "But if the Ronin make a fight over the pendant, what then? You coiuld very well die, Sosuke-san, and then I would lose one of my best tools for convincing the Dragon."

"I understand," you say. "And I will abide by your ruling on the matter should you command me to stay. Still, it is my hope that you would allow me to aid the Kitsune."

"Her story has truly moved you, then," Yasuki Goro says, his frown changing to a thoughtful expression. "I can see you desire to do right by this fox spirit." The courtier sighs. "Very well. I will allow this. But I will not let you go alone. I insist you take two Ashigaru with you in case the Ronin decide to be belligerent."

You bow to him again. "My thanks, Yasuki Goro-sama."

The courtier waves a hand. "I understand your desire to help those in need, and I would not wish to anger a spirit. I do not know much of them aside from hearsay." He sighs again. "This is more the domain of the Kuni and the Toritaka than of the Yasuki."

"I understand, my Lord."

"Well, away with you, then," Yasuki Goro says. "I expect you back in a few hours, alive and well."

Yasuki Goro goes back into his tent, and you stand up. As you turn around, you can see the Kitsune sitting on the edge of the camp. The Ashigaru on duty don't seem to notice her, however. You give her a nod, and you can see her eyes light up with renewed hope.

Now you've just got to get the pendant back.

Ok, now Sosuke has Yasuki-sama approval. (Thanks @Sirrocco, I should have thought of that as well.)

So, now we need to get the Ashigaru, and moving on.

How about this initial vote?

[] Go with the Ashigaru. Wake up the other three sleeping.
-[] Inform them than you have Yasuki-sama's permittion to bring two of them to assist you in dealing with a group of ronin, in order to retrieve some stolen object. Try to not give a lot on details, if posible, as it you would risk even more the permanence of the kitsune in the mortal world.
--[] If is absolutely neccesary, inform them that you have Yasuki-sama's trust in your word as well.
[] Let them a moment to prepare themselves, and to decide who will come with you. In the meanwhile, aproach the kitsune.
-[] Inform her that you got the approvation of your lord, and he even provided you with some assist.
-[] "Once we're ready, please lead us."

Now I really think we should have interacted with the Ashigaru before. Not that it matters anymore, but still...

This is a bit derpy vote in my opinion, specially on the part of trying to not give a lot of details. I really want to not risk the kitsune's permanence.

Hence the reason I'm not putting the "x" yet, awaiting for its proper butchering.

It has just occurred to me to wonder if we were perhaps a monk in a past life.

There are so *many* possibilities for our Secret Love flaw, after all - and if that were what was going on, this fox spirit would certainly qualify for "desperately in love with you, and will do anything to have you".

Thinking, though... this is a kitsune. Even assuming that what she says is true, she is a trickster spirit, and also constrained in what she may say, and there are many things she has not said. It is *highly* likely that we're not getting the whole story. I think we'd be well-served to approach this (at least initially) as an investigation challenge, rather than a combat challenge.

Fortunately, we have some degree of authority with which to do that. We are a crab samurai, in Crab Clan lands, acting (at least to some degree) under the orders of a well-respected mid-range official in the clan. Additionally, the fox spirit was apparently working on behalf of the clan ("chasing off some interlopers from Gaki-do" generally qualifies as serving Crab Clan interests, at the very least under "harrying and denying succor to the foe"). Also, finding her den and making off with her stuff could very easily be taken as theft. Admittedly, this is all a bit on the thin side, but there are Crane and Scorpion who have made a career out of killing people in duels with less justification. It's at least enough to give us a reason to approach them, declare that we are investigating, and request answers. If their response to official inquiry is to attack or flee, we can give an appropriately vigorous response of our own without further concern. If it's anything else, we can find out more about the situation before acting.

[x] Approach the Ronin camp.
[x] Hail the guard, if there is any. If there is not, rouse one of the ronin (probably with our testubo - nudging rather than attacking). Inform them that we are Hiruma Sousuke, here on the business of the Crab Clan (for cultivating potential allies against Gaki-do *always* qualifies as the business of the Crab Clan) and that we wish to speak with their leader.
[x] Inform the leader that a Nemuranai (describe the necklace) has been stolen recently, that we and our men have been assigned to retrieve it, and that by speaking with the spirits, we have determined that it lies somewhere within the bounds of the camp. Ask that the ronin leader please provide the nemuranai, as we would not wish to have to charge them with possession of stolen goods.

Worth noting that every word of the above is true. (the bit where we state that it's a nemuranai is a reasonable assumption, based on the fact that it's made of jade and the fox spirit stated she could use it to find her lost love on reincarnation) There is no reason to sully our lips with lies.

It also implies that we've been assigned this as a mission by crab clan higher-ups, that we either are a shugenja or had shugenja support for it, and that by extension whoever it was stolen from is Pretty Darn Important Indeed. If they challenge us based on where they find the thing, we can reveal that, yes, it was indeed stolen from a Kitsune, and ask if they have a point to make. If they challenge us on anything else... well, then they are telling us to our face that we are lying... and in Rokugan, when your social inferiors tell you to your face that you are lying, you have all *sorts* of appropriate responses. They're unlikely to do that unless they want a fight to the death.

edit: looks like you could actually concatenate @EtchedSteel's vote and mine. That's cool.

I will note that the kitsune specifically said that there wasn't anything in the rules against two humans talking about their interactions with her. We can pretty much tell the ashigaru whatever we want, and have it be okay.

-reasoning and vote-

Hence why I wanted to do some preparations, before actually going into the ronin camp directly. Maybe Sosuke (and we) would learn something on the way, about the fox's true intentions. Tricky spirits they are, but for now we don't have many IC reasons to actually distrust her.

Still, I agree with you, if it doesn't puts the fox in risk, then I will modify my (vote?, still hasn't put the "x" as I'm writing this) in a while.

[x] Go with the Ashigaru. Wake up the other three sleeping.
-[x] "A spirit ally of the Crab has had something precious to them stolen, and has requested our aid. I intend to go retrieve it from the pack of ronin currently guarding it. Yasuki-sama has given me leave to take two of you to assist me in this matter. Hopefully I can bluff them a bit, and get it without bloodshed, but if the swords come out, I will need you to watch my back."
[x] Let them a moment to prepare themselves, and to decide who will come with you. In the meanwhile, aproach the kitsune.
-[x] Inform her that you got the approvation of your lord, and he even provided you with some assist.
-[x] "Once we're ready, please lead us."
[x] While en route, ask the ashigaru for a quick description of their capabilities. Make small adjustments to strategy as appropriate.
[x] Approach the Ronin camp.
[x] Hail the guard, if there is any. If there is not, rouse one of the ronin (probably with our testubo - nudging rather than attacking). EDIT: Changed part of the briefing, adapting it to Sirrocco's wording.

EDIT2: Added that one missing line for the "Plan Combo", I like that name, thanks Sirrocco.
