Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

On the subject of skills, I have an announcement to make. I'm not going to allow you to spend your skills during a period of conflict. For example, if you find yourself getting stomped socially, I'll not let you spend points to suddenly become awesome with your words. This wouldn't be an issue if we were going in a session by session format, but we're not so this is the way I'm handling things. When Sosuke is not currently using his skills in some form I will allow you to spend his points. But again, I'll not allow you to reflexively spend experience to handle problems in the moment.

Also, there is something called an Honor Roll. This is where you can, once per session, re-roll any dice roll with dice equivalent to your Honor Rank. But again, we're not working on a session by session basis. As such, I will allow you to make an Honor Roll once per week in game time. If Sosuke has failed a roll on something important, I'll inform you in the thread and you can vote on whether or not to use your Honor Roll to re-roll it. Do note, however, that you must take the second roll even if it is worse than the first. So be sure to carefully consider matters before making a decision.

You could always reward us with X number of honor rolls once we finish an arc. Probably with some sort of cap to keep us form getting too many. From there we just use them as necessary.

If we use a tetsubo in a duel, then we lose regardless because we spat on the traditions of the Empire.

Dragons can be frustrating true, but as long as we stick with the Mirumoto and Kitsuki we should be good.
I would point out that if they challenge you, you can choose the weapon you fight with, and as a wise man once said, never ever under any circumstance whatsoever agree to duel a Crane on their terms. Ever. No matter how smugly enraging they are, the dishonor you bring onto yourself by getting cut up like a chicken by someone who practices the fine art of cutting people with one really fast strike and thus failing your lord is greater than the dishonor you bring onto yourself by ignoring their jeers and taunts.

And if you can get them to challenge you, you can challenge them to a proper Crabby fight, i.e. heavy armor and tetsubo.

(Shouting Matsu is full of wisdom, even if it's poncy good for nothing but war and slitting your belly open Lion wisdom.)

While Jade is useful, we will need much more than just jade to win this war. An army marches on its stomach after all. As such if we are successful we get a much larger reward from Crane lands than Dragon. More risk? yes. But lets see what happens.

For the clan overall? Yes... but as noted, both sets of courtiers are going out already anyway. The question as far as service to the clan isn't "which mission is more critical", it's "which mission is best served by having us as one of the bodyguard bushi?" I would say that perhaps, just perhaps, the mission to the lands that are filled with duelists who want you to challenge them so that they can dishonor and kill you would *not* be best served by the addition of a brash samurai.

Brash isnt just for regular combat Sirrocco, it applies for social situations too.
Brash means that we have a big red button pasted on us, and anyone who pushes it will force a will check. If we fail the will check, we *must* attack them. Yes, thankfully we have enough Etiquette that we can attack verbally rather than physically, but in the courts, it's still a painfully exploitable vulnerability in the hands of those that might wish to dishonor us. It's really not all that hard to think of ways they might maneuver us into situations where us attacking in response to provocation would reflect poorly on ourselves, on the delegation, and on our clan.

I agree with Sirrocco, better to not risk our necks for not being able to control ourselves.

Also: Adding awareness vote. This will be useful.

Added in the awareness to later vote, and wanted to keep votes consolidated.

We may want to look into buying that Disadvantage off at some point, if we can justify doing so via in-character actions.

Is no one else going to join me on buying that point of awareness? We're headed straight into a social-heavy situation, we have the points for it, and the fact that we thought it wouldn't be all that useful is the reason why we were veering off buying reflexes.

Didn't the GM say we can't do that though?

I said you can't spend experience "In the moment." If you're in the middle of using skills, and find yourself getting hammered, I won't let you spend experience to suddenly buff yourself. I will only allow experience to be spent during periods of relative downtime.

@Winged Knight, a question: to what extent, if any, would we be able to substitute Perception for Awareness in social situations? Because while we do want to buff our social skills a tad before this next bit of the campaign kicks off, I can't help but feel that character-wise Perception is a better fit for us than Awareness. Not just in the "Water Ring is better for us than Air Ring" sense, but also in the "we have far more of an Earth and Water mentality than a Fire and Air one" sense.

There's a fundamental difference between the two, I'm afraid. Awareness taking in the entirety of a person at once so you can read them and respond accordingly. Perception, meanwhile, is bringing your senses down to a minute focus as you attempt to spot anything out of the ordinary.

Also, I'm reluctant to start shifting what goes under certain attributes around willy-nilly. As much as I always prefer fluff over crunch, there's gotta be some mechanical balance in there somewhere. I'll consider the matter, but I've got reservations about it.

Damn.

Ah well, I guess it'll just be a bit longer before we boost a Ring then.

[x] Spend XP to buy a level in Awareness. Maybe justify in fluff by our having additional dealings with the Nezumi over the past year and a half, and thus needing to develop the ability to move closer to their pace.

Also, if possible:

[x] Go into XP debt by one point to pick up a level of Lore: Nezumi.
Edited on account of impossibility.

Sorry, but experience debt is not going to be a thing in this Quest. You either have the points, or you don't. Worry not, though. You'll be getting experience much more frequently. In smaller amounts, sure, but it won't be at the end of arcs or anything like that.
