Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

Hi everyone! I apologize for my recent silence, but I've got a treat for all of you to hopefully make up for it. Straight from the pen of the incredible @TheOneMoiderah, I present an amazing rendition of the confrontation with Kohsa no Oni!

I would say its beautiful but I'm on a severely messed up monitor resolution atm and Shiroe is so stretched I thought he was a troll.
I'll comment when I can see it as it should look.

[x] Assure Hosaru that we will speak to our superior on this matter and express our hope that we can work with the Scorpion and Daidoji to arrange matters to benefit all concerned. If he cares to give us the names of relevant individuals that Yasuki-sama may wish to contact for further communication on this issue, and where to find them, we will pass that along as well.
-[x] Move away from serious political conversations for the remainder of the meal; perhaps Hosaru can recommend some sights to see in the city where we are unlikely to be bothered, or would care to hear a description of one of the locations we have been fortunate enough to visit, told purely to entertain, or one of our other companions has a matter they would wish to speak about.

The vote isn't closed yet, just so you all know. I just wanted an idea of where things were leaning.

Fortune is smiling upon you. True, this does not ensure that your Clan will have assistance from the Crane in advancing negotiations. Even still, it seems to you steady progress toward achieving the overall goals of the Crab. If arrangements can be made then your Clan's armies will have all the food they'll need for both the war and the recovery after.

Now you merely have to prove that the Scorpion have been acting in the Crab's benefit and have no ill will toward the Crane in doing so. It isn't an impossible task, but it isn't an easy one by any measure. How, then, can you go about proving the good intentions of the Scorpion's recent cooperation with the Crab?

And then a thought strikes you.

"If you don't mind, I could speak of my time in the Scorpion realms," you say. "A lot happened there that can explain their current actions."

Daidoji Hosaru gives you a wry grin. "Really now?"

"Yes indeed," you reply. "I can tell you the story, if you wish, of how we stood alongside brave Scorpion Bushi against the vile depredations of the Lost." You lean forward, resting your elbows on the table. "I would say it all began when a young Scorpion Samurai by the name of Bayushi Mataru joined us as we watched a play during a festival-"

"Please forgive me, Hiruma-sama, but that won't be necessary," the Crane Samurai cuts in. "I've no doubt you will do the story justice in the telling, but there is no need at this time."

"Oh," you say, taken off guard. "That is of course your prerogative, Daidoji-sama, but would you mind if I asked why?"

"It's no trouble at all, Hiruma-sama," Daidoji Hosaru says as he picks up his sake cup and pours himself another drink. "It's just that we've already heard this same story from Bayushi Mataru-san himself. Your confirmation of meeting him, and confronting a Lost, in Scorpion lands gives more weight to his claims and that of his Clan."

"I see…" you say, not certain how to respond now that your momentum has died. "And will that be enough to ease the concerns of your superiors?"

"Not by itself, but it's a good start," Hosaru replies before standing up. He bows to you all, and you return the courtesy after rising to your feet. "I shall be in touch with you and your Lord, Hiruma-sama."

"I look forward to further discussions, Daidoji-sama," you say back. "I wish for nothing but good fortune for us both."

"A sentiment I'm sure many can get behind," he says. The older man takes a step back, and then pauses. He remains that way for a few heartbeats more before continuing. "I also would not mind, if you are willing, to simply talk about our various experiences over tea." His expression turns stoic, all trace of his usual geniality vanished. "I have spent eight tours of duty on the Great Carpenter Wall, and I feel it might be… nice, to converse with someone who understands such things."

"That sounds perfectly fine, Daidoji-sama," you say with a nod. "I would be amenable to that, should we both have time."

"Excellent!" Hosaru says, a smile once more gracing his face. "Until that time, then, I wish you a good day."

"And to you, Daidoji-sama."

And with that Daidoji Hosaru makes his way toward the door and exits the inn, his sake cup still in hand. You stare after him for a few moments, trying your best to understand the puzzle the man presents. This new acquaintance of yours is one of many layers, and you have the distinct feeling that you've only uncovered the uppermost portions.

However, is that truly unexpected? Daidoji he may be, but he is still of the Crane Clan. Nothing is ever simple with Doji-no-Kami's people, even among her most forthright. It is merely something you will have to live with while you remain in their lands. To waste breath complaining about it is as useful as cursing the tide for dragging you away from the shore.

"I do not care for that man very much," Hanabi mutters, idly mixing what is left of her food with her chopsticks. "He's part of some deeper game here, and I am not sure it is to our benefit to involve ourselves in it."

"It is simply their way," Shirou replies, setting down his now empty teacup. "The Crane fly upon graceful wings through the courts and politics of the Empire. To do otherwise would be against their nature."

"There is truth in that," Himawari says, nodding. "I would find it more surprising if Daidoji-sama didn't have some agenda he hoped we might help with."

"Bah, dealing with these people is a waste of time and energy," Hanabi mumbled, turning her attention back to her food. "I'll be glad when our business is done and we can leave this city."

You sit back down, mulling over what has occurred. Everything seems to have gone very well, but you also know that despite the skills you've gained you are still an amateur in these matters of subtlety. You know enough to realize just how much you do not know, and the last thing you wish is to ruin an opportunity here in your ignorance.

Even still, you have options. Your good friend Bayushi Mataru is apparently within the city. This is not a great surprise considering he said he was being assigned to help your Clan in negotiations all those weeks ago. Getting in contact with him might help with coordinating your efforts.

On the other hand, Yasuki Goro is going to need to be informed of what has happened here. The problem is that you will have to wait until he has finished his discussions with the port authority, and you've little idea how long that will take. You cannot imagine it will be too soon, however.

There are decisions to be made, you muse as you sip on now lukewarm tea. Best make them soon.

Welp. Hope we get that void point back or that was a wasted venture.

Though in hindsight it makes sense that he would've already heard the story, especially if he involves himself in the Clan politics and why Scorpion is acting as it is.

[X] Find a way to contact Bayushi Mataru

We may wish to keep Hanabi away from him though, as we may have punched him in the face for insulting the Crab while our parents were in negotiation over us marrying his sister. At least that is the impression I got from his "that seems familiar' comment and behaviour when we first met (i.e, he remembered rather better than us and wanted to see how we have changed)

@ seventeen: why? Doesn't timeskipping every time just mean less experience once we reach the endgame and therefore a rather gory death for us?

We don't get experience for every dead update where nothing of import happens, so no, that's not the case.

No offense meant to @Winged Knight, because he does a good job of keeping most updates interesting even when nothing's really happening, but the majority of the sort of update that has a timeskip option will produce nothing important anyway, so why not avoid wasting time and skip ahead?

You weigh your options. As it stands, you could wait for however long it shall take Yasuki Goro to be finished with his dealings and inform him of what has happened. However, that uses up valuable time that might be better spent easing the way for your Lord. After all, the plan isn't for your group to remain long in Crane Lands.

With that in mind, seeking out Bayushi Mataru seems the best course of action. The Scorpion delegation seems to have already been laying groundwork to overcoming this diplomatic hurdle with Doji Noboru. If you could arrange contact with them before Yasuki Goro finishes with the port authority then it will help expedite matters dramatically.

You set aside your plate, pleasantly sated with tempura and fried vegetables, and nod to yourself. Perhaps you are being presumptuous, but it is with the best of intentions. This is all to limit the inconvenience to your superior. Surely there cannot be anything wrong with that.

"I believe it's time to seek out our friend Bayushi Mataru, Shirou-san," you say, turning to face the monk. "He has likely been in the city for weeks now, and it would be good to coordinate how we may prove our good intentions to the Daidoji."

"That seems a wise course of action, Sosuke-sama," Shirou replies, still holding his empty cup. He drums his fingers on it in thought. "I am unsure how we might begin our search, however. Mura Sabishii Toshi is not a large city, but it isn't a small one either. We could spend hours walking these streets before we locate them."

A frown graces your lips at Shirou's words, but cannot deny your friend's wisdom. Yasuki Goro will be in discussions for some time yet, but you cannot spend the entire day searching for Bayushi Mataru and the other Scorpion Samurai. Your duty is, first and foremost, to be his Yojimbo and assistant. Your Lord has given you a great deal of leeway, but you doubt it extends so far as to wander about aimlessly until the sun goes down.

"I believe that is easy enough to resolve," Himawari says, smiling. She raises her hand, beckoning the serving woman from before. The woman approaches, giving a bow Himawari returns with a nod. "I have a question. Have any Scorpion Samurai dined here in the last few weeks?"

The woman, eyes downcast as is proper for a peasant, nods. "Yes, Samurai-sama. Just four days ago they came in for lunch."

"And would you, perhaps, know where they came from?" Himawari asks. "We have important matters to discuss with them."

"It is not my place to inquire into the business of Samurai, honored Lord," the woman replies, her posture growing tense. A quick glance reveals her knuckles growing white as she clutches her apron. "It would be improper of me to speak of such things."

"It is all right, good woman," Himawari says, her voice soft. "As I said, we have business with these Scorpion Samurai. You won't be doing anything wrong by helping us."

"As you say, Samurai-sama," the woman replies, unclenching her hands. She still seems nervous, but has at the very least calmed down somewhat. "They mentioned in conversation they were staying at The Golden Fan. It is an… Inn, near the docks."

"I see," you interject, your eyes narrowing. "And you simply overheard this?"

"All I can say is that they spoke loudly, Samurai-sama," the peasant woman replies. "They made no attempt at hiding their conversation from the room."

"That should suffice, thank you," Himawari says, nodding toward the woman again. "Your help is appreciated."

"My thanks, Samurai-sama," the woman says, bowing and taking her leave with obvious relief.

"I suppose we have a destination now," Shirou says, drawing everyone's eyes to him. "Should we head that way?"

"Yes," you say, standing up. "I would meet with Mataru-san again to discuss important matters, and it would be good just to see him again."

"I would enjoy that as well," Shirou replies, smiling broadly. "I remember him as a respectable Samurai and a fine warrior. I'm curious as to how he's managed this last month."

You make your way from Hayaku's Walk and back the way you came, for the most part. Directions to The Golden Fan are easy enough to find, though people give your party strange looks as you ask. There is no time to ask as to why, however, as the people you query quickly move on after giving you the answer you seek.

It quickly becomes apparent that 'near the docks' is a relative description. The path you take is certainly in the same direction as the harbor, but it does not lead directly there or to the storage areas located near it. You can guess it would not be a long walk between the two areas, however, but where you head now is definitely separated from the port.

After all, it is doubtful there would be the sound of music on the wind among the docks, after all, or at least none so fine as what you hear now. Nor would there be so many fine perfumes, overwhelming even among the fragrances of this city…

As you spot the red lanterns hanging from storefronts, you begin to understand just why the people you asked directions from were giving you such queer looks. It certainly explains why they moved on as swiftly as possible afterward.

"This is a geisha house," Hanabi says with narrowed eyes, lips drawn tight as you all stand before your destination. "Sosuke-san, your friend has taken lodging within a geisha house."

"That does appear to be the case," Himawari mutters, frowning. "They seem to have rooms for people to stay, but it's certainly… bold, of them."

The Golden Fan is a sizable compound surrounded by a low wall that reaches up just above your head, ensuring privacy and showing off a fair degree of wealth. Above those walls you can see the tops of trees, their branches laden with flowers. No doubt there's a small garden inside, along with several other amenities. These places are supposed to be relaxing, though you only know this from hearsay as you've never been to one.

Now you only need to decide just how you're going to proceed. The direct approach could be useful, but you'll likely need to inform the Oka-san that you're not here to… relax. It might save you and everyone else a great deal of embarrassment to just have a letter delivered.

[] Walk right inside the geisha house, asking for Mataru.
[] Have a letter delivered inside, asking Mataru to meet you elsewhere.
