Courtier Roll: 5k3=24
"I am certain there is no need to force such a matter, Mirumoto-san," you say quickly before either Hanabi or the Kakita can continue. "Given that Kakita-sama here has given me every courtesy that I have given him."
"But Sosuke-san," Hanabi replies, her voice but a whisper. "He's mocking you!"
"I spoke improperly first, after all," you go on, your own voice at its normal volume as you address the Crane Samurai properly. Hanabi remains silent, though you can tell she isn't pleased. "It is as she says, Kakita-sama. I am the Yojimbo of the honorable Yasuki Goro-sama, who has recently arrived to the city on Clan business and seek lodgings for my Lord, several traveling companions and myself. Could you recommend such?"
The Kakita is frowning again, this time his lips bordering on turning into a proper scowl. This only confirms your earlier suspicions that the man had been attempting to entrap you. His companions, likewise, have ceased their merriment to observe you closely. Perhaps this should be of no surprise, considering the usual reactions members of your Clan have to these sorts of tricks.
And indeed, you do want to let this fop know exactly what you think of him and his implications. However, if you did so then you'd be playing directly into his hands. Though you are still young, you are not the quick-tempered child who dashes toward every insult anymore. You serve greater causes than appeasing your own pride.
That cause will not be served by getting drawn into a conflict here. It is just the opposite, in fact. So you maintain a cordial expression, give the Crane no chance to grasp any advantage he might twist in order to drag out this farce.
"I'm sure someone as obviously cultured as yourself would have no trouble suggesting a suitably appropriate place for us rest," Himawari says, the barest hint of a smile on her lips. "Please, would you enlighten us on these matters, Kakita-sama? We travel with esteemed diplomats, and they require appropriate accommodations."
The Kakita flushes at Himawari's words, noting the subtle jab as she turns his earlier talk about culture back on him. And in connecting this to the mention of diplomats she's further solidified that you are acting under orders. It is with some effort you keep your smile from shifting into a grin. The man is rather neatly trapped.
"You could go to Doji's Song if you wanted the best accommodations within the city," the Kakita says with obvious strain in his voice. He's not speaking through clenched teeth, but it is close. "They will surely-"
"Oh come on now," calls a voice from across the street. "At this point you're just being petty."
An older man walks out from a sake house opposite, clad in armor painted light blue. His short white hair is tinged with grey at the temples, but this sign of age does not take away from a powerful whipcord build. He gives the impression of tightly coiled rope, thin but strong, and with a jovial grin he raises a cup of sake to you in salute.
"Daidoji Hosaru-sama," the Kakita says, surprise and irritation warring on his face. "I'm sure I don't understand what you mean."
"Of course you don't," Hosaru says before taking a sip of his drink. At his belt you see a jug, the sweet scent of plums briefly overcoming the flower smell of the city. "You're just going to send Hiruma-sama here to an inn well known to be favored by your Lord, Doji Noboru-sama?" He gives the younger man a wry look. "You should stick to being a Yojimbo, Kakita Ryoichi-san. These sorts of plans are obviously not your strong suit."
Ryoichi's eyes go wide. "Just what are you implying?"
"That you decided it would be best to help your superior by starting a duel with a visiting Crab Samurai in the hopes of stymying their Clan's negotiations here," Hosaru says bluntly, pausing a moment to pour himself more sake. "And being damned obvious about it."
"I have no idea what you are talking about," Ryoichi snaps back, glaring at the older man. "I can assure you there was no plan or anything of that nature. We were merely having a conversation."
"Spur of the moment, then? That's better, if still not wise," Hosaru says before turning to face you. "If you want an inn where you can reasonably expect some privacy, go to Hayaku's Walk." He grins. "They'll treat you right over there, Hiruma-sama."
