It is as she says, Kakita-sama - I am the yojimbo of the honorable Yasuki Goro-sama, who has recently arrived to the city on Clan business, and seek lodgings for myself, my master, and several traveling companions. Could you recommend such?"

It's a matter of techniques; Mirumoto only get to add their Kenjutsu skill rank to all Iaijutsu rolls at R2, whereas Kakita add 1k1+School Rank at R1 and only need to beat their opponent's rolls by increments of 3 instead of 5 at R3.

Still, if anybody's going to beat a Kakita from an in-universe perspective, it'll be a Mirumoto.

Indeed. I mean, you occasionally get flukes of luck and have a Bayushi Courtier beat a Kakita Duelist in Iaijutsu (*shakes fist at exploding dice*), but in general, the Kakita have a significant advantage over the Mirumoto, and indeed, anyone else.

Especially in a duel to first blood, which this would be if it happens at all (plz, Mirumoto-yandere-san, don't say anything that pushes it to a lethal duel). In lethal duels, low-level Kakita especially can have problems against opponents who can tank their first strike and then hit back, whether in a duel or a skirmish.

[X] Tell Hanabi to take him down. Give her encouragement during the fight in order to spend two void to give her an extra void.

Hypetrain!

Courtier Roll: 5k3=24

"I am certain there is no need to force such a matter, Mirumoto-san," you say quickly before either Hanabi or the Kakita can continue. "Given that Kakita-sama here has given me every courtesy that I have given him."

"But Sosuke-san," Hanabi replies, her voice but a whisper. "He's mocking you!"

"I spoke improperly first, after all," you go on, your own voice at its normal volume as you address the Crane Samurai properly. Hanabi remains silent, though you can tell she isn't pleased. "It is as she says, Kakita-sama. I am the Yojimbo of the honorable Yasuki Goro-sama, who has recently arrived to the city on Clan business and seek lodgings for my Lord, several traveling companions and myself. Could you recommend such?"

The Kakita is frowning again, this time his lips bordering on turning into a proper scowl. This only confirms your earlier suspicions that the man had been attempting to entrap you. His companions, likewise, have ceased their merriment to observe you closely. Perhaps this should be of no surprise, considering the usual reactions members of your Clan have to these sorts of tricks.

And indeed, you do want to let this fop know exactly what you think of him and his implications. However, if you did so then you'd be playing directly into his hands. Though you are still young, you are not the quick-tempered child who dashes toward every insult anymore. You serve greater causes than appeasing your own pride.

That cause will not be served by getting drawn into a conflict here. It is just the opposite, in fact. So you maintain a cordial expression, give the Crane no chance to grasp any advantage he might twist in order to drag out this farce.

"I'm sure someone as obviously cultured as yourself would have no trouble suggesting a suitably appropriate place for us rest," Himawari says, the barest hint of a smile on her lips. "Please, would you enlighten us on these matters, Kakita-sama? We travel with esteemed diplomats, and they require appropriate accommodations."

The Kakita flushes at Himawari's words, noting the subtle jab as she turns his earlier talk about culture back on him. And in connecting this to the mention of diplomats she's further solidified that you are acting under orders. It is with some effort you keep your smile from shifting into a grin. The man is rather neatly trapped.

"You could go to Doji's Song if you wanted the best accommodations within the city," the Kakita says with obvious strain in his voice. He's not speaking through clenched teeth, but it is close. "They will surely-"

"Oh come on now," calls a voice from across the street. "At this point you're just being petty."

An older man walks out from a sake house opposite, clad in armor painted light blue. His short white hair is tinged with grey at the temples, but this sign of age does not take away from a powerful whipcord build. He gives the impression of tightly coiled rope, thin but strong, and with a jovial grin he raises a cup of sake to you in salute.

"Daidoji Hosaru-sama," the Kakita says, surprise and irritation warring on his face. "I'm sure I don't understand what you mean."

"Of course you don't," Hosaru says before taking a sip of his drink. At his belt you see a jug, the sweet scent of plums briefly overcoming the flower smell of the city. "You're just going to send Hiruma-sama here to an inn well known to be favored by your Lord, Doji Noboru-sama?" He gives the younger man a wry look. "You should stick to being a Yojimbo, Kakita Ryoichi-san. These sorts of plans are obviously not your strong suit."

Ryoichi's eyes go wide. "Just what are you implying?"

"That you decided it would be best to help your superior by starting a duel with a visiting Crab Samurai in the hopes of stymying their Clan's negotiations here," Hosaru says bluntly, pausing a moment to pour himself more sake. "And being damned obvious about it."

"I have no idea what you are talking about," Ryoichi snaps back, glaring at the older man. "I can assure you there was no plan or anything of that nature. We were merely having a conversation."

"Spur of the moment, then? That's better, if still not wise," Hosaru says before turning to face you. "If you want an inn where you can reasonably expect some privacy, go to Hayaku's Walk." He grins. "They'll treat you right over there, Hiruma-sama."

You know, I'm pretty sure that the Daidoji is doing the same thing to us as the Kakita was in regards to which inn to go to, considering that Doji Hayaku was the founder of the Daidoji family.

well hosaru seems fairly awesome, though he's crane so I give even odds he's hostile but using ryoichis's fuckup to endear himself to us. Huh, I think I just understood why some people hate the crane, even when you find one you can get along with you can't be sure it's not a ploy. At lest the scorpion clan owns up to being manipulative schemers.

Probably, but no need to be rude, to anyone involved. Thank the esteemed Samurais who took the time to help us and say that we'll check their suggestions out, peace out and look for shit on our own.

Get reckt Ryouchi

Still while we can't fully trust Hosaru. At worst we'll be back where we started if we go where he suggested.

Sooooo....

[x] "Thank you Daidoji-sama, and Kakita-sama for your advice. I will certainly seek both those places out and see what can be one about gaining accommodation there. No doubt if they're both recommend by fine Samurai, they'll be quite busy; which means alas that I must take my leave. It was an honour to meet you." Bow, and exit stage right.

Well, the issue here is that the Crab and Crane have been hostile since basically forever- honestly, the Crab probably started off the whole thing with their outright dismissal of a great deal of the Empire's culture, which is a pretty big insult to the Clan that has upholding said culture as a huge part of their duties. And frankly, stealing a Family of the Crane's to act as courtiers for the Crab didn't help matters. :V

That said, the Crane do not respect the Crab or the importance of their duty far too often, and I'm speaking as a Crane fan and player of a Kakita here. The fact that he's Daidoji is a point in his favour, though- a fair few Daidoji serve on the wall themselves, and they're the only Family out of the Crane that really gets along with the Crab to any real degree. Personally, I don't think he's trying to screw us over here.

Actually curious, but what would if happen if you killed someone in a first-blood iajutsu duel? Could you pretend it was an accident successfully, and even if you did would you lose Glory/Honour?

Depends.

IIRC, as long as you were obviously not striking to deliberately kill, it could be written off as an unlucky accident. They happen sometimes, y'know?

If it was paired with another issue- like, say, striking second after blood was already drawn- you'd probably be expected to commit seppuku.
