[X] "Shinichiro acted and fought with honor during the battle. Were it not for him the day could have been lost. In the end he did his duty as an defender of the Empire. I merely thought that honorable conduct should at least be repaid with an honorable end, Kitsuki-Sama."
You carefully maintain your expression, keeping your eyes from widening or your lips from parting in surprise. It is a near thing, and likely a pointless gesture. No doubt Kitsuki Ryojiro has myriad ways of reading your temperament, and what knowledge you have gained won't suffice to properly guard your emotions from his eyes.
Even still, you do your best. It's just the principal of the matter.
What can you say to this? How are you supposed to respond when a man as powerful as the Kitsuki Family Daimyo inquires into your motivations? Though now that you think about it, you've repeatedly found yourself in situations where people far above your station have questions of you. That in itself might be stranger than all the things you've fought on this journey. Battle, at least, is part of your duties.
Though Kitsuki Ryojiro hasn't even truly asked you a question… He's revealed a measure of his impressive perception, but not actually asked a question. But that is merely semantics. Very likely he already had an inkling of your reasons when you spoke during Shinichiro's judgement, and if he disapproved he would have made it known then.
Which means he wants to hear it from your own lips. Would that make this a test, or perhaps genuine curiosity? It could very likely be both, but that doesn't change what you need to do. Kitsuki Ryojiro desires an answer from you, and you will have to give it.
"Shinichiro acted and fought with honor during the battle," you say. There's no reason to lie, so you give him the truth. "Were it not for him the day could have been lost. In the end he did his duty as a defender of the Empire. I merely thought that honorable conduct should at least be repaid with an honorable end, Kitsuki-Sama."
"I suppose that is true," the Dragon Daimyo says softly, turning to look back ahead. You can see the towers of Shiro Kitsuki in the distance. "He was a man begging for a chance at redemption… But I couldn't see it. Not until I had a moment to breathe."
"Kitsuki-sama?" you inquire, brow furrowing as you turned to look at him. "I'm no sure I understand."
"I'm speaking about regret, Hiruma-san," Kitsuki Ryojiro replies. "And how it can so easily lead to rage. It can take a man to anger so hot it could put to shame the fires boiling beneath the earth itself."
There's really nothing you can say to that… And really, you're not sure Kitsuki Ryojiro would
want you to say anything. The man is sharing something personal with you, revealing a weakness in his person. You are drastically below his station, and of another Clan on top of that. It is incredibly strange that he would do this.
Though perhaps that is the very reason he speaks now. It might be that he shows you this part of himself
because you are not one of his subordinates. Does that mean he is honoring you in this exchange, or shaming himself?
You don't know. And that, perhaps more than anything, is the most uncomfortable aspect of this conversation.
"I wanted to execute him, to let this seeming of Moto Shinichiro die the dishonorable death I felt he deserved," he goes on. "And then Asako-sama spoke, and you spoke… And then Shinichiro spoke, and revealed he never expected to live through this even as he rendered aid." He sighs. "In the face of that, even my anger could not hold."
You both walk in silence for a time, among the army yet still separate from it. Shiro Kitsuki draws ever closer,
"I have spoken with Yasuki-san about the Jade we have mined," Kitsuki Ryojiro says, breaking the silence. "And he has made a good case for the Crab's need of it. What I have experienced these past days helps to reinforce the point. However, Doji Kumiko-san has made it known that the Crane would provide very favorable trade in exchange for the Jade. That is something my Clan needs."
"I see," you respond not entirely certain what to say. "Kitsuki-sama, please forgive me but I'm not certain what I might add to this conversation. I am unlearned in the intricacies of trade."
"I am merely setting proper context," he replies. "I cannot promise you all the Jade we have or will mine, for we require it to aid our Clan in our recovery." He pauses a moment, letting his words sink in. "But I have been empowered, and am willing, to give your Clan three times what is mandated by the Emperor's decree."
Your eyes widen and your mouth drops as all semblance of decorum leaves you. That is… Well, honestly you hadn't given much thought to just how much Jade your Lord might convince the Dragon to part with. By Imperial Decree, all the clans must give one cartload in ten of all Jade mined to the Crab to aid in your eternal war with the Shadowlands. To give three times that amount?
That much Jade will protect hundreds of warriors, and provide powder for as many weapons. It wouldn't be enough or the entirety of the Crab armies, but it would stretch your Clan's stockpile of Jade that much further. It is an incredible advantage, and might ensure the tide turns in your favor during the war to come.
"I… Thank you, Kitsuki-sama," you say, bowing as best you can as you walk. Mostly, you just lower your head and shoulders so that you don't fall over. "I cannot express the fullness of my gratitude for what you have given my Clan."
"It won't be entirely without recompense, of course," Kitsuki Ryojiro says. "But we can accept this arrangement in exchange for both tea as well as craftsmen to help us with… What in the world?"
You rise and turn to see what the Daimyo is looking at. A rider is approaching the army quickly on horseback from Shiro Kitsuki. Several Mirumoto Bushi move to intercept him before he can get too close to Kitsuki Ryojiro, but then back away as he comes into view.
As he approaches, you can see why. The sashimono on the rider's back reveals the mon of the Miya Imperial Family, a filled circle within a hollow one surrounded by seven half moons. It creates a distinctive star shape, and one recognizable to any Samurai. After all, it would not do for the Imperial Heralds to not be recognized as they perform their duties.
"Kitsuki-sama, it is good that you have returned!" the Miya says, dismounting and going to one knee before the Daimyo. His clothes are dusty from hard riding, as is the man's face. He must have just arrived this day. "I have arrived today bearing grave tidings from the south."
"Please speak, Miya-san," Kitsuki Ryojiro says, glancing at you out of the corner of his eye. "I would hear your news now."
"There has been a massive assault on the Kaiu Wall, Kitsuki-sama," the Miya says, head still bowed. "A force of over ten thousand Lost led by almost five hundred Oni. The Crab hold the line with the aid of the Emerald Champion Kakita Zhuge-sama, and are gathering their armies to fully repel this attack." He looks up. "As of three weeks ago, the Crab are at open war with the Shadowlands."
*************
And with that, we conclude this arc of Glory of the Emerald Empire! wow, but this has been a long one. Intense, too, with a number of twists here and there. I hope it's been as much of a ride for you all as it's been for me. Thank you all for being so patient as I've gone about writing this. I know my update schedule has decreased quite a bit, which is a combination of shifts at my workplace leaving me tired and the fact that I've been getting a little burned out. I'm going to take two weeks off so that I'll hopefully come back fresh and ready to keep going.
For now, goodies!
Sosuke has acted as any Samurai should, with honor and integrity. This is not deserving of any special praise, for all Samurai are expected to perform their duties as best they can. However, he was partially responsible for the allowance of a penitent man to cleanse his shame. By speaking on Shinichiro's behalf, however indirectly, when it could easily have sparked reprisal he has earned 2 points of Honor.
It is at the end of the journey that we stop and look back in reflection on what has passed. Sosuke has reached a milestone in his life, and learned a great deal. The knowledge he holds now dwarfs that from even a handful of months ago, and though this has often caused him pain he has also matured. As such, he has gained 12 points of experience.
Victories in battle are one of the surest ways to gain renown, even when the enemy is without honor. For vanquishing a terrible foe that would have no doubt laid waste to the countryside before it was stopped, and in so spectacular a fashion, Sosuke has gained 15 points of Glory.
Once again, thank you all for participating in this Quest! It means a great deal to me that so many of you enjoy this work of mine, and I hope to see you again for the next arc! Be prepared, for soon enough you shall bear witness to
The Rising Tempest.
