Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

Nope! He spoke perfectly regular accented Rokugani from his terrible Tainted traitor lips.
Thanks for the clarification! In that case, we might as well trust this guy. He was holding some sort of sanctified weapon, so it's at the very least unlikely that he's some kind of shadow-thing.

[X] Hit the Great Traitor with your tetsubo before he can get up again.
-[X] Focus on dealing damage!

I would encourage against dealing damage - we already know that we can't hurt him.

[X] Hit the Great Traitor with your tetsubo before he can get up again. Beat him into the ground.

This is an opposed Strength roll, and our Strength is only 2. There's a good chance that we won't be able to do anything.

If we want to mess with Shadow Shinichiro, we should go for a Disarm check.

If we want another defender, we should rescue Shinjo Wanli, and talk very quickly to convince her not to gank Untainted Shinichiro.

Switched then

Disarm still requires a Strength Check.

Crud. I'm away from my books at the moment, and @EtchedSteel 's post didn't mention one.

Sorry, I only took a quick look at the book.

But indeed, both disarm and knockdown requires to win a contested STR roll in addition to hit.

Do please note that Shinichiro's ATN increases by 5 for each called raise. If we don't meet the TN, it will count as a complete miss for getting too greedy here.

Our magic beads should provide us with raises which is why I'm suggesting maneuvers at all.

I've described tactics rather than just a single action so we don't have to vote every round.

-[x] target the right wrist with a golf drive to smash his weapon from his grasp.
-[x] If there is enough raise left over then removing the support might make him faceplant but the disarm is primary.
-[x] keep on striking at limbs to move them as he tries to put weight on them. We can't match him for strength or cripple him but we might have enough power to keep dropping him with reaps and sweeps.
-[x] if he looks our way then bat to the eyes - one point of damage won't make him need to blink and flinch but he probably will at least the first time.
[x] Akio can make up his own mind.

Welp, that looks like encouraging him to take the hand & a knockdown attempt to me.

Hopefully Shadow Shinichiro's TNs are high enough from injuries that we get lucky despite our low strength.

Attack Roll: 7k3=39
Damage Roll: 7k3=4
Strength Roll: 2k2=25

Whatever Asako Akio's decision turns out to be, you don't stay to see it. Instead, you raise your tetsubo high and charge the shadow-touched abomination before it can stand up again. You have to take advantage of this opportunity while the enemy is weak. Any other quandary or concern is secondary to this fact. This monster has to die!

The creature glares as you approach, still snarling like a wild animal. Skin is slowly forming back over the burned wreckage of his face, but it still resembles a skull more than anything else. Shinichiro tries to get up before you can reach him, but within a few steps you're practically on top of him.

There is a loud thwack of steel clashing with armor as you slam your tetsubo into his back and drop him a few inches closer to the ground. Shinichiro grunts as you crack through armor as black as tar, sending more shadowy mist to join the pall hanging around the battlefield. The sound brings a smile to your face. It seems that strike did a bit more than the last one.

"Boy," Shinichiro growls, his body shifting beneath your weapon. "You're becoming a nuisance!"

Ash flies up into the air as the monster's tetsubo slides across the ground and smashes into your leg. Pain shoots up your limb even through the protective cushion of your armor, burning like a fire upon your flesh. You instinctively brace against the blow, trying to maintain your balance. You last for almost a second before you are sent tumbling to the ground.

Shinichiro looms over you as he rises to his full height, grinning through what remains of his lips. For a moment you marvel at his durability, still able to fight even with such terrible wounds. Then his clawed hand stretches down impossibly long toward you, oozing cold and shadow, and a spike of fear rams its way down your spine.

Not again! you scream in your mind, scrambling to get away. I can't let him touch me again!

Shinichiro's hand keeps up with you easily, however, coming ever closer. He's almost gotten you…

Which is when a flash of green hits him right in the face.

Shinichiro roars in pain and stumbles back, one hand clutching at his skull as the Jade Strike burns at the Taint seeped into his body. You blink at the sight, suddenly aware that you won't be taken back to that terrible cold that almost took you before. The sudden wave of relief is palpable, and you almost don't see Himawari as she steps up next to you with an outstretched hand.

"We heard your call, Hiruma-san!" she says with wide eyes. Her clothes are burned and torn, as well as stained with blood, but otherwise she seems fine. "Are you hurt?"

"Somewhat," you grunt as you accept the offered hand, letting Himawari pull you to your feet. "I got overconfident."

"Such things happen to the best of us, Sosuke-sama," Shirou says as he approaches, one shoulder helping Shinjo Wanli stand. Hanabi comes up on his other side, swords held ready and her eyes wild with concentration and anger. "But with these trials comes wisdom!"

You turn back to the battered, shadow clouded form of Shinichiro as he shrugs off the last of the Jade Strike. He shakes his head and shudders, then looks upon your gathered band among the melee still going on. He places both hands on the hilt of his tetsubo and shifts his feet.

"Ah," Shinichiro mutters, a wry grin on what's left of his lips. "Well, that's certainly not good for me, now is it?"

[] Charge forward and destroy him!
[] Surround him and attack as one!
[] Write in.

Sosuke has taken 17 wounds, with 57 remaining. He is in the Nicked Bracket and will take +3 on all TNs until he is healed. However, you have 2 Void Points remaining so you may negate 10 of the damage should you desire.

Shit this stinks of party wipe.

[x]Surround him.
[x] Caution your companions, especially Shinjo Wanli, of the unattural strenght and resilience of the aboimination.
[x] Engage him first, keep his attention and try to give your companions a chance for a free attack.
[x] Spend void point to negate damage.
[x] Call out to the Elemental Master and whoever the Ronin is. HELP!

Void to negate damage or to buff our next attack? I think adding an extra 1k1 to our hit roll (does it buff damage too?) should more than make up for the hit penalty we'd suffer due to our wounds, not counting whatever extra bonus we could get from P'an Ku's present.

It only buffs damage for katana and wakizashi, unless you have an ability that allows otherwise.

Either way, negate damage is best out of these options. It means we'll take longer getting into the really nasty brackets.

[X] Surround him and attack as one!
-[X] Spend Void to reduce damage

Aha. I'd just assumed that Void could buff any roll. Didn't know it was weapon limited. Are there any other limitations to its use?
